Politics / Obaseki Commissions New Hotel, As Edo Hots Up For Arts Festival by Montracine: 5:31pm On Oct 12, 2019
NAFEST: Obaseki commissions new hotel, as Edo hots up for arts festival

…more flight options for guests, tourists
With barely two weeks to the National Festival for Arts and Culture (NAFEST) holding in the state, Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has commissioned De Bliss Gold Hotel and Suites, swelling the ranks of hospitality options for guests and tourists coming into the state for the festival.

The governor also urged politicians to invest in viable businesses outside politics so as to empower people to contribute meaningfully to societal development.
Obaseki, who said this while commissioning the Hotel located along Sapele Road in Benin City, called on politicians to commit to investment concerns that can guarantee them sustainable livelihoods.

The state is hosting the NAFEST from October 19 to 26, which is expected to pull tourist traffic to the state. The growing list of airlines with flight operations in the state has also ensured flexible travel options for those visiting the state.
He noted, “You can't be a successful politician if you don't have something else doing aside politics. Politics is like the stock market where stocks sometimes go up and at other times, they go down. As such, it becomes necessary to have other businesses rather than politics alone.
“When you are not in office, you have other things to sustain you and when you are in office as a politician your business will be to work for the people.”

He said Edo State has transformed into a major economic hub with policies put in place by his administration to attract investors to the state, adding, “We will commence the construction of the Benin Industrial Park within the next six months. If we continue with our policies in Edo State, businesses which are located in the state will thrive and create more employment opportunities for Edo people and residents.”
The Manager, De Bliss Gold Hotel and Suites, Mr. Anthony Ilems, thanked the governor for creating an enabling environment to nurture businesses, which has created opportunities for youths in the state to be gainfully engaged.

He noted, “The governor is doing well in the state. I urge all Edo people to join hands with the governor to move Edo State to the next level.”
Other guests at the occasion include the state’s Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu; Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), Rt. Hon. Frank Okiye; Chairman, Edo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barr. Anselm Ojezua; Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Diaspora Affairs, Hon. Osazee Osewinmgie-Ero, and Commissioner for Agriculture and National Resources, Hon. Richard Edebiri, among others.

Politics / No Insecurity In South-east, No Need For Operation Python Dance 4 —IPOB by Montracine: 4:08pm On Oct 12, 2019
The Indigenous People of Biafra , on Saturday, said there was no insecurity in the South- East geopolitical zone , to warrant the launch of the ongoing Operation Python Dance 4 , in the region , by the army .

The group alleged that what appeared like insecurity situation in the zone , had been caused by “ land grabbers ” who were reportedly working with leaders in the region .

The group ’ s Media and Publicity Director , Emma Powerful , stated this in a statement made available to journalists , on Saturday.
IPOB maintained that the Nigerian Army should focus on the northeastern part of the country, that had almost been ravaged by the activities of Boko Haram and other forms of insurgency , rather than in the South- East zone , where it’ s men were allegedly “ harassing defenceless innocent Nigerians . ”

The group said , “ There is no insecurity in Biafraland save for those introduced by land grabbers .
“ There is peace except for where terror herdsmen are wreaking havoc in some parts in South - East . It is therefore unacceptable that Nigerian army should be running around in armoured vehicles and tormenting innocent civilians when they should be combating insecurity in core North . ”

Celebrities / North May Keep Presidency For 100 Years – Prof Ango Abdullahi by Montracine: 9:42am On Oct 12, 2019
North may keep presidency for 100 years – Prof Ango Abdullahi

The Chairman of Northern Elders Forum, Prof. Ango Abdullahi has warned that the North will only support candidates from the region in the race for 2023 presidency.

He condemned outspoken Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo for blaming Hausa/Fulani as being responsible for Nigeria’s problems saying it is an illusion to create a new Nigeria without the Hausa/Fulani.

He emphasized that zoning or power shift, which many southern leaders are agitating for is unconstitutional and would not be supported by the North. He spoke further on these and more in this interview by ABDULLAHI HASSAN in Zaria.

Northern elders have been silent on national issues for quite some time. What happened?

It is true that for quite some time especially in the month preceding the 2019 elections, the Northern Elders Forum had found a common platform with the southern leadership to the extent that a number of meetings if you like summits were organized by these elders, I think three or four times. At that time, the elders were discussing on what will be the fate of the country particularly if the elections of 2019 were not conducted fairly or with honesty or if Nigerians themselves failed to realize that there are challenges facing the country and there is need for Nigerians to have a leadership that will tackle these serious challenges. This was the platform that formed the basis in which Northern Elders Forum worked closely with the southern elders groups, up to the last summit. The Northern Elders clearly came out with a communiqué which recommended the election of a candidate provided by PDP, Atiku Abubakar against the re-election of Muhammadu Buhari on the platform of APC for the simple reason that in the last four years by our honest assessment, he did not perform to a level that he should be re-elected. That was our last recommendation before the elections. So, we waited for the outcome of the elections and every Nigerian today knows the result. Obviously, I commented on the outcome of the elections and other forums from south recommended that Atiku should challenge the result at the Tribunal and the Court especially because of the fact that it was quite apparent that the election was not free and fair or credible election. We support Atiku’s legal action with the hope that the issue could be redeemed. Again on this ground, Northern Elders Forum was at the forefront with counterparts in the South to support any group that challenge the 2019 elections. In fact, we have not seen the end of the Court process yet because there are appeals before the Supreme Court. We are now waiting for the final verdict of the Supreme Court on the 2019 elections. The important thing here is the working together by the same the major socio-cultural groups namely, Afenifere, Ohaneze, Northern Elders and Niger Delta groups. Of course, other debates are going on not necessarily on the election itself but on other issues and challenges, which the country is facing. So for me, I feel there is a need for Nigerians at different levels to always look at events in the country and see whether these events are positive or negative to the interest of Nigerians. That is why Northern elders require careful study and examination before making any comment on any particular issue.

So, what has become of the alliance between southern and northern leaders after the 2019 elections?

You see, there is a difference between alliance and understanding. I think at the level of leadership of the country I don’t think there is any common alliance since the election is over. What we have in the country is the search for future political partnership, which only time shall tell. But on our part, the socio-cultural organizations, there was only common interest on the 2019 election from the beginning to the end, in fact, even after. Our common expectation that time was a change of leadership but to most Nigerians, we did not have a free and fair election.

Do you think there is an unwritten agreement among northern leaders to oppose the return of the presidency to the south in 2023?

Well, you see the question of where power goes, has multi-dimensional bases. If you go back to the period, from 1990, there has been politics that made it possible for power to go to where Nigerians have generally agreed to go.

This is regardless of the relative definition of democracy which says on the basis of one man one vote, power resides with the majority while the minority will always have their say. But victory remains with the majority. From my personal experience, I can count three occasions where the issue of power shift was determined by the plurality of the voters, I could start with my personal friend, General Obasanjo.

He was elected mainly by the North. Obasanjo’s first term was entirely determined by the North.

He did not get any vote from the southwest. Chief Olu Falae won the western part of the country while south-east and south-south voted against Obasanjo’s candidature. In the second term, few things began to emerge which shows whether the northern support was enough or worth it to determine his continuous support. Obasanjo’s success was determined by northern votes.

My understanding of this issue has gone beyond party formation rather social; some of it historical. Obasanjo was former military officer, former head of state as a military officer, he made his own friends and enemies while he was serving in the military. But by and large, when this discussion settled down, the next civilian president after General Abubakar Abdusalami should come from the South. That was a general understanding within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which I was there, and I took part in designing the manifestoes and the party’s constitution at the time.

The party agreed that power from time to time should rotate between the North and the South. Though not all agreed, my friend late Abubakar Rimi objected and insisted that he would contest the election and I think Senator Gemade also objected and quite a number of others.

But it was their constitutional right to contest and of course, the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria supersedes the party’s constitution. We left the South to determine whom to choose. Later, south-west, southeast and south-south produced General Obasanjo and Dr Alex Ekwueme, while Obasanjo ultimately emerged as candidate and president in 1999. So if you are looking at that, you can say yes.

The rotation was a practice in Nigerian democracy. After the tenure of Obasanjo in 2007, based on the principle and understanding built on his own election, the party started shopping for who will take over from the North. Despite all rumours of third term, the power later shifted back to the north and late Umaru Yar’Adua became the president. So on that basis, one could see that if this had continued, perhaps the definition of democracy in Nigeria would have been slightly different from the universal definition.

This rotation was modified democracy to suit the circumstances and challenges facing the Nigerian state particularly our diversity. So Umaru Yar’adua died after three years, now the question would arise; has the north finished its term? No, the north was supposed to finish its eight years, which Obasanjo had.

So north should continue keeping power for another four years after Jonathan must have completed the remaining one year of Yar’adua’s tenure as provided in the constitution of Nigeria. We expected the PDP to say that the next president would come from the north. But it never happened which marked the beginning of the breakdown of the spirit of power shift. The south largely insisted that with the support of the Northern governors, Jonathan should continue which means that the north has been shortchanged in terms of the period agreed for power to rotate between the north and the south.

You can see that it was the PDP itself that first truncated the sprit of zoning or power shift especially on the basis of time. It was the beginning of the crisis. That was the time when we in the Northern Elders Forum and others fought Jonathan’s re-election in 2011, though we did not succeed because the north supported him.

Again, he wanted to continue in 2015, that would have been a serious violation of the constitution, we insisted no. The spirit of power shift or zoning under the platform of PDP had been broken down.

I think the reason for the breakdown was influenced by the position taken by President Jonathan because he challenged that there were no documents to show the agreement of power shift or zoning. We rejected his position and insisted that it was a violation of the agreement in principles. Eventually, he contested but failed and Buhari won.

It is also important to remind ourselves whenever you are talking about power shift between the South and the North that, it was only PDP that had a power shift agreement; it is not in the Constitution of the country. However, the issue of zoning was part of the recommendations of the 1999 constitutional conference but the then military head of state said no; it is difficult to change constitution of the country therefore that arrangement should not be included in the constitution instead it should be left with parties to use it for the purpose of getting party’s spread around the country.

That is why it was not put in our constitution. So, zoning has no place or ground in the Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria. It was a political party affair based on willingness and agreement of members. No party has that arrangement except PDP.

81% of Buhari votes in 2015 and 2019 came from the North. Though I am not a card-carrying member of any political party, I am not sure whether APC has any arrangement like this.

Hence, they don’t have the issue of power shift and zoning does not arise. It could be right or wrong to adopt it, yet the decision is left to the party. I think it’s something that we have to be careful about. I think there is nothing wrong at all if the north keeps power for century because democracy is all about numbers and we have it.

You see, the North is the most liberal voting block in Nigerian political history. For instance, Abiola defeated Bashir Tofa in Kano and other parts of the North in the 1993 presidential elections.

This liberal attitude of northerners in the political environment made it possible to prepare the ground for a democratic system to have a foundation and solidify. I don’t think there is any public debate as to whether the north will vote in one direction or party.

In fact, we are yet to have political party accepted by northerners in 2023 talk less of a candidate presented to the North to vote for. Maybe in the near future, we shall unveil our plan to Nigerians. The beginning of our resistance to Jonathan was not for him in person but to some people around him and PDP, which betrayed our agreement to hand over to North. With respect to personal integrity and honour of President Jonathan, if he had come out to say that yes, it is not my turn but I need your support to continue, that would have been a different thing but he did not do that, instead, he kept challenging. I wrote an open letter to Chief Edwin Clark during the controversy, reminding him on agreement we reached between myself, late Olusola Saraki and himself on the need to keep the relationship together on the nomination of candidate where if the north presents a presidential candidate, the deputy should come from south-south, this arrangement we worked for eventually produced Umaru Musa Yar’adua and Jonathan Goodluck as Vice President. You see with the support of the North they succeeded and in 2015 the south-south wanted to cheat the north again. This is a clear indication that some people did not care about the right of others in the north. That was why we in the Northern Elders Forum fought against it. I kept saying since and will repeat it that any party that gives us a candidate of northern extraction will be supported in 2023.

What do you make of the recent calls for Nigeria’s break up especially from southern leaders allegedly over the refusal of the north to agree to a full-scale restructuring of the country? What is your position on this?

Well, my recollection as per what I read in Saturday Sun newspaper of September 29, 2019, our respected elder statesman that made that statement on break-up is Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a chieftain of Afenifere, a group that Northern elders had worked with especially before 2019 elections. When I read details of the interview, I saw his reason behind his angry comment that the north, in fact, he did not the say north alone but he said Northern Muslims. He used the word Northern Muslims. This is really less expected from someone who has been part of the Nigerian history like him at the age of almost 90 years. Specifically, he said Northern Muslims are responsible for the crises that Nigeria found itself in today. The question to ask him is that how does he expect the Northern Muslims referred to as responsible for problems in Nigeria today come to work with him or anybody he represents because these are his words, not mine. If he doubts this, he should go and check his words in the interview, to the extent that he was suggesting that South -west, South- east, South-South and what he described as progressive Middle Belt should work together to solve the problem of Nigeria. So that has an implication, yes, his definition of Northern Muslims and the area they live should be excluded from future Nigerian state of his dream. Now obviously, it was his suggestion that if Northern Muslims did not change their ways, which I don’t know which ways he is referring to, we shall be excluded from Nigeria. He has not spelt out what the Northern Muslims have done or have not done that led to crises of Nigeria today. So if that is the thesis, then, of course, Adebanjo has to find a solution. How the rest of the country could come together and exclude the Muslim North out of present Nigeria; that is maybe to nurture a baby and see whether it will survive. He was emphatic on Muslims North, which perhaps means Hausa/Fulani. If we were not going to do their bidding which he did not make it known, then we shall be excluded from this nation. So, that made him to say that the country can break-up. Well, first and foremost, he has to work hard to see that he galvanize these areas that he prefers to work with, and see whether it is possible or feasible or workable. From all indications, I can assure him or whoever holds the same illusion that is not possible. Not even to the level of breaking up the country into the units. If he is saying the present federating structure of Nigeria is not working enough, or efficient, then he can call for a summit so that all the units would agree and restructure. Because I agree that some arrangements of our states are not working enough. Look at some states who claim because they are producing oil are taking a lot of money from revenue derivation against other parts of the country. If he is looking at the restructuring on the basis of viability of the various units that constitute the federating units, then we will be partners in that discussion but if the discussion is already on prejudice against a tribe or ethnic group then it is already dead on arrival. Northern Elders believe so much in the unity of this country but not at the expense of any part of the country. If Adebanjo and any other person with the same view are serious about a break-up, the North is not afraid and is ready.

The Vice President Prof. Osinbajo seems to be facing some challenges, do you think this is normal or there is more to it especially 2023 permutation?

No, no I have not read it anywhere that the vice president is quarrelling with his boss. I have not seen or heard it from any strong source. But if there are controversies, and if I want to avoid commenting on this, I will just say that it was an in- house, family affairs thing in the presidency. Osinbajo has been very active; viable vice president the failure of the president includes him. If they have an internal problem they should settle it in a smooth manner. Unfortunately, the controversy looks like the usual Nigerian issue, that whenever one of their own is involved in a disagreement with any other, they quickly rally round and back their own, they protect him, back him and fight back.

I know I have been part of the three constitutional conferences if you look at the constitution of this country; the only position where the vice president has been mentioned in the various structure of government is the national economic council where he presides as chairman. The national economic council is made up of governors and some captains of agencies and by function; it is just an advisory body to the government. That is the only constitutional role assigned to vice president. I could remember, maybe Obasanjo did much where he engaged his vice president in governmental activities and functions. From what I have seen for four years, Prof Osinbajo, a very intelligent person has been very helpful to the activities of the presidency by representing Mr President at so many fora and making sound pronouncements on policies. I don’t think Osinbajo would be making pronouncement without clearance from his boss. So what I guess is happening is that apart from Osinbajo as vice president and ministers responsible for looking after government departments, there is a strong indication that there are other people who commonly referred to as cabals who are faceless and some are known that are perhaps trying to get into government much more than required. In other words, there could be a controversy between those recognized by law and those not recognized by law. I can assure you that I am among Nigerians that are keenly watching events from that direction. Cabals or whoever they may be I believe there are many people doing things without being recognized by law.

Politics / Lagos Assembly Threatens To Arrest Ambode, Four Ex-commissioners by Montracine: 7:50pm On Oct 10, 2019
Lagos Assembly Threatens To Arrest Ambode, Four Ex-Commissioners

The Lagos State House of Assembly has threatened to issue a warrant of arrest on the former governor of the state, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, and four others who served in his administration as commissioners.

This decision followed two preliminary reports presented on Thursday by two ad-hoc committees set up by the House to investigate the 820 buses purchased by Mr Ambode and to appraise the 2019 mid-year budget.

The former commissioners involved are Mr Kazeem Adeniji (Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice), Olusegun Banjo (Commissioner for Budget), Akinyemi Ashade (Commissioner for Finance), and Wale Oluwo (Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources).

Presenting the preliminary report of a nine-man ad-hoc committee to probe the purchase of the 820 buses, the committee chairman, Fatai Mojeed, said that it was discovered that due process was not followed.

He added that the former governor used the refund of the Paris Club for the purchase of the busses without the approval of the House.

He (Ambode) did not inform the House before commencing the purchase of the buses. Over N48 billion was spent on the purchase of the busses and N22 Billion was spent on import duties.

“520 of the buses are still at the seaport,” Mojeed told his colleagues during plenary.

He said the Accountant General of the State told the committee that she depended on the approval of Mr Ambode for the purchase of the busses and no payment voucher was made available to the committee.

The lawmaker also explained that they demanded the budget instrument used for the purchase, but there was no budgetary provision for it.

He added, “They could not produce any newspaper where the purchase of the buses was advertised.

“The committee invited 20 stakeholders, 16 of them complied while four of them refused against the constitutional provision.”

The ad-hoc committee chairman on mid-year budget review, Gbolahan Yishawu, alleged that the former commissioners were invited by his committee but refused to appear without giving any excuses for their absence.

Yishawu also claimed that the former governor gave some directives on spending without the approval of the lawmakers.

In their reactions, some members of the House suggested that since the former governor and those officials who worked with him had been invited by the two committees and refused to show up, warrant of arrest should be issued on them.

The lawmaker representing Alimosho Constituency I, Bisi Yusuf, told his colleagues that the House was empowered by the Constitution to issue a warrant of arrest on concerned individuals for their refusal to appear before the committees.

However, another lawmaker representing Badagry Constituency I, Ibrahim Layode, expressed a contrary view and urged his colleagues to tread with caution.

He advised that the concerned individuals should be invited through newspaper advertisements, stating that the former commissioners were likely to come across the publications.

On his part, the Majority Leader of the House, Sanai Agunbiade, said, “I want to observe that if they have been invited and refused to show up, we should summon them and if they still refuse, then a warrant of arrest can be issued.

“Now they’ve been invited, we should summon them by using the dailies before going to the extent of issuing an arrest warrant.”

Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, in his remarks noted that the matter was beyond the issue of an arrest warrant.

“When this House invites people and they refused to show up, it is like setting a bad precedent for others coming behind.

“The clerk should write them, including the ex-governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, and if they refused, we will do newspaper publications and after that, we will issue a warrant of arrest,” the speaker concluded.

Politics / Fulani Herdsmen:Despite Being Northern State,Benue A Bad Brother,Neighbour To Us by Montracine: 7:34am On Oct 10, 2019
Despite Benue state being a northern state, it has been a very bad brother and neighbour of the Fulani herdsmen."

The National Chairman of Gan Allah Fulani Development Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Sale Bayari, has slammed Benue State for being a bad 'brother' and 'neighbour' to Fulani herdsmen while commending Oyo State people for accommodating them.

Bayari stated this during a public presentation of views, observation of the proposed grazing regulations bill 2019 by the Oyo State House of Assembly.
The presentation was held at the house of chiefs, Agodi, Ibadan.

Bayari said, “From our calculations, one cow will eat grass, drink water, drugs and other maintenance costs to the tune of N1,500 a day.
“Despite Benue state being a northern state, it has been a very bad brother and neighbour of the Fulani herdsmen.

Ironically, it is Oyo state among Yoruba states that have been and remained our home truly as Nigerians due to the wonderful warm and receptive nature of the great descendants of Oduduwa that the Fulani herdsmen have come to see and accept as their beloved great grandfather too due to their accommodating spirit, nature and character of the people of the Southwest.

“We shall continue to be law-abiding citizens of this state and here undertake to ensure that we fish out all the bad elements among us that are distorting the peace and tranquillity of Oyo state.”
The parliament had proposed the bill as a way of finding a lasting solution to violent clashes between farmers and herders in the state.

The speaker of the house, Adebo Ogundoyin, noted: “There is a need for us to continue to live in peace and harmony, Fulani and the farmers have been living together for a long time ago and nobody ousted his or her boundary or herders grazing their cattle in a way that will destroy farm input."

Queen Theresa onuora is a proud Daughter of Unubi in Nnewi south LGA of Anambra state.
She is popularly Known as the Queen of Egedege!..
Her songs Rocked the 80s and 90s are still evergreen!. .
Her Album IJELE ELUBEGO was the pride of Igbo music!..
Our Parents and elders must be familiar with this line: "Ijele elubego, mu na onye ga agba egwu o?!".
If you are counting igbo music legends, Theresa Onuora must be on the list..

Her Egedege Dance is one of the most renowned traditional dance outfits and an Igbo traditional Royal-styled cultural dance in the whole of South Eastern Nigeria . Founded in 1985, it is a reincarnation of an old version originally performed by the ancestors of the present-day Unubi. In those days, it was a moonlight dance, performed by youths. It has however been remodeled to fit modern trends. Their performance is a combination of songs, dance, Instrumentation and colorful traditional outfits. Their performance is introduced by elaborate fluting which is the entrance cue that heralds the group, led by the queen. The singing only begins when the queen reaches the stage and takes the microphone. She arrives under a big umbrella, carried by one man, with another fanning her from behind. She sings but sometimes dance to the rhythm of the instrument. Egedege dance was made popular by Her (Mrs Theresa Onuorah) in unubi Town. She is happily married and lives in unubi till date. The name Egedege stems from a local slang for richness and bravery which explains why the dance is considered Cultural classics and are only played in a royal homes or rich families.

Queen Theresa Onuora is still much healthy and alive.. We gathered it is near impossible to get her perform at functions as her Daughter has perfectly taken over from her though she was spotted sometimes last month in flesh and blood performing At Rev.Fr Prof. Bona umeogu'' Inaugural Lecture at Awka,Anambra state..

Jonathan, Others Manipulated 2014 Confab Report — Junaid Mohammed

Junaid Mohammed, a Second Republic federal lawmaker, on Tuesday said the 2014 national conference convened by former President Goodluck Jonathan was a fraud which was allegedly manipulated by the former president and some other people in order not to favour the North.

Jonathan, who lost the 2015 presidential election handed over the report to President Muhammadu Buhari. However, Buhari has refused to implement it saying it will be kept in the archives.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Daily Independent on calls by some Nigerians that the report of the conference be implemented, Junaid, who was also a delegate to the conference, said many of the issues that were rejected during the conference were smuggled into the final report of the conference.
“Those saying that the report should be implemented have they read the report? Has anyone of us who attended the conference told Nigerians what aspect we want to be implemented?

“I was at the 2014 national conference. I represented Kano State which is one of the two biggest states in the country. I had been involved in several conferences in the past and even after the 2014 conference, we also had another one here in Kano concerning the state.

“As far as I am concerned, that 2014 confab is a fraud. What they are purporting to be the report is a fraud. Most of the issues that we discussed which were rejected was brought back into the final report through the backdoor. They did that with the full cooperation of the then President Goodluck Jonathan.

“But we defeated every issue they brought even though we are in the minority. If you want to have a constitutional conference, one, it must be representative of the whole country. People don’t feel unnecessarily marginalised”, he said.
Junaid said it was absurd that the Northern region, which he said has the highest population and has always been in the majority even before 1914 amalgamation was treated as a minority at the conference.

According to him, despite being accorded the minority status, the North defeated others in most of the issues discussed at the conference.

“The North has been in the majority of Nigerian population even before 1914. You cannot have a constitutional conference in which the North has been reduced to a minority and you say you are holding a national conference. How is that possible? In spite of this fraud, we still defeated them.

“It was one of the gimmicks employed by former President Goodluck Jonathan and we know that. In fact, the idea in the North was that we should boycott the confab.

“But we thought that may affect the unity of the country and we don’t want to be held responsible historically for that. So, that was why we went, we saw and we defeated them”, Junaid said.
However, responding to Junaid’s claim, Afenifere, pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, challenged him to mention some of the rejected issues discussed at the conference that was smuggled into the report through the backdoor.
Yinka Odumakin, the group’s National Publicity Secretary, said Junaid displayed brazen disregard for the truth, character and integrity through his utterances.

“Can Junaid mention such items? One is amazed at how some of our compatriots display brazen disregard for the truth, character and integrity when they push sectional and parochial agenda no matter the level of facade they wear.
“I put it to Dr. Mohammed that he is not a witness of truth until he points out those items”, he said.

Politics / Igbos Should Go To Hell, They Have Lost The War And Defeated-junaid Mohammed by Montracine: 3:01pm On Oct 08, 2019
Nobody Will Beg Igbos Not To Secede If Denied Presidency In 2023–Junaid Mohammed

- Elder statesman and Second Republic lawmaker, Junaid Mohammed, on Tuesday said the Igbos are free to carry out their threats of secession if denied the Presidency in 2023.

He admonished politicians from the South-Eastern part of the country who are nursing the idea of becoming President in 2023 to perish the thought.

Speaking in a chat with Daily Independent, Junaid said currently the South -East has not put forward a credible person who is qualified to lead Nigeria.

” I challenge Igbos to secede if they are denied Presidency in 2023. If they don’t secede, let them go to hell. They have tried secession before but they were defeated and failed and they lost over one million people”.

“If they want to secede again because of 2023 politics, they are more than welcome. You think anybody will beg them not to secede?” he asked .

Politics / How I Escaped IPOB Attack In Germany - Ohanaeze Ndigbo President by Montracine: 11:23am On Oct 08, 2019
President-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, John Nwodo, has condemned the attack on Ike Ekweremadu in Germany
- Some members of IPOB had in August attacked Ekweremadu during his visit to Nuremberg, Germany

- According to the Ohaneze leader, it is a sacrilege in Igbo land for a young man to attack somebody who is old enough to be his father
Barely seven weeks after the former deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, was attacked in Nuremberg, Germany, the president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, John Nwodo, has revealed how he escaped assault by members of Independent People of Biafra (IPOB).

Speaking on Channels TV on Monday, October, the Igbo leader said he would have also been with Ekweremadu in Germany but his visa was delayed.

He said: " I was supposed to be there with Ekweremadu, but my visa came late. And I persuaded him to go because all the disparate Igbo communities in Germany were coming together."

Legit.ng reports that he described the attack as
“un-Igbo, uncivilised," adding that the earlier those tendencies are stopped, the better for the people of the southeast.

Nwodo further explained that it is sacrilegious for a young man to attack somebody who is old enough to be his father in Igbo culture.

"What does the Ekweremadu attack portray? First, it shows 'we are people who do not respect our culture'," he said.

The Igbo leader, however, noted that it would be wrong to categorise all the members of IPOB as terrorists because of a single action.
"It cannot be said that all of IPOB are terrorists because they did this in Nurnberg but the encouragement by their leadership gives a vicarious liability for such a senseless act," he added.

Politics / Four gang leaders "terrorising" Rivers arrested - Army by Montracine: 8:35am On Oct 08, 2019
Four gang leaders "terrorising" Rivers arrested - Army

Four suspected gang leaders previously wanted for “terrorising” communities in Rivers State have been apprehended following raids of their hideouts by the army, an official said.

The media coordinator for army operations, Aminu Iliyasu, who just left as the spokesperson for Army 6 Division in Port Harcourt, said this on Monday.

He said the operations leading to the arrests were carried out simultaneously and that all the targets were involved in kidnappings.

“Troops on Operation MESA raided the criminal hide-outs of some identified kidnap kingpins in Rivers State,” said Mr Iliyasu, a Colonel, in his statement. “The suspected kidnappers who have been terrorising innocent citizens met their waterloo when troops of 29 Battalion simultaneously raided their criminal hideouts in Obio/Akpor, Tai and Gokana LGAs of Rivers State on 2nd October 2019.”

He added: “The raid led to the arrest of 4 high profile criminals who have been on the Security Agencies’ wanted list. Those arrested include Dumbari Bro from B-Dere, Victor Dokara from K-Dere, Gbaraco Kaviloba from Lewe, and Confidence Friday from Bodo community.”

All the four communities where the suspects are reportedly from are parts of Ogoniland in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Residents in the oil-rich state commonly express fears about activities of cultists and gangs, most of them young persons. They sometimes engage in gun battles and kidnap people, including travellers for ransom.

Many of them also engage in violence during elections.

Meanwhile, the four kingpins arrested by the army would “soon” be handed over to the “appropriate security agency for prosecution” after military investigation, said Mr Iliyasu.

Politics / Nigeria Will Not Break Up, Yoruba Will Get 2023 Presidency’ by Montracine: 4:51pm On Oct 06, 2019
An Abeokuta based cleric, Dr Olayiwola Samson Mercy says it’s the turn of Southwest to produce President in 2023 despite the power struggle from other geo – political zones.
Olayiwola, however, told Yoruba leaders that it requires a fierce battle to achieve power shift, saying the north “is ready to cling to the power beyond 2023.”

The Clergyman who is the General Overseer of the Christ Divine Churches International spoke in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Sunday during the church’s anniversary.

He equally ruled out Nigeria’s breakup, saying the country would remain united despite the call for secession in some part of the country.
Olayiwola while urging the countrymen to always remain peaceful and united, said “Under President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria has been moving forward. And I can testify.”
Speaking on the struggle for Buhari’s successor, the clergyman said “In 2023, power will return to Southwest because it’s Yorubas’ turn. Like you know, an average northern wants to stay in power. And may I say this, in 2023, we have to force power out of the north because they are not ready to quit the stage for other zones.
“But, I want you to be rest assured that Nigeria will not break up. We will definitely have crises and we will resolve it. Do you think a politician who just emerged as governor in Imo State would be part of moves for Nigeria’s break up? If you hear some people calling for war or kidnapping everywhere, the political class are behind it and it’s all about 2023.”

Olayiwola also expressed confidence that Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo would survive his ongoing travails, believed to be part of power play ahead of 2023.

Politics / JUST IN: One Shot As Urhobo, Itsekiri Youths Clash by Montracine: 2:58pm On Oct 06, 2019
A yet -to- be identified man has been reportedly shot in a clash between youths of Okere-Urhobo kingdom and neighbouring Itsekiri extractions, at Okere Market in Warri South council area of Delta state.

The victim was said to have been admitted at an undisclosed hospital as a result of the incident, which occurred Sunday morning.
According to reports, youths of both groups shot randomly, forcing traders and buyers to flee the market during the attack.
It was gathered that hoodlums seized the opportunity to loot the abandoned shops.
It was also learnt there had been tension in the area since Saturday.

An order by the Okere-Urhobo party that all shops be locked in respect of the final rites of passage of their monarch, HRM (Prof.) Oghenero Okumagba, Idama ll, reportedly led to gun battle between them and their Itsekiri counterparts.
It was learnt that youths of Okere-Urhobo extraction had gone to Obahor, a predominantly Itsekiri area, as well as the market to enforce the order.

They were reportedly rebuffed by the other party, who stated that commercial shops cannot be shutdown in their domain, as there was no such order compelling people to do so during the burial ceremony of the late Olu of Warri, HRM Ogiame Atuwatse II.

This further culminated into an argument, which resulted in a fight with guns and other weapons.
The Delta State Police Command confirmed the development.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeyinka Adeleke, said: “It is one person that was shot and hospitalised, not six. Another person was shot and hospitalised yesterday (Saturday). They’re fighting because of the burial of the King.”

Foreign Affairs / Zimbabwe To Introduce New Currency In November by Montracine: 2:15pm On Oct 03, 2019
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe is to introduce a new currency in November , a member of the bank’ s Monetary Policy Committee, said on Thursday .

Eddie Cross , a renowned economist , who made this known in an interview with State broadcaster Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation , said that the new currency would be introduced in a move set to curb current cash shortages in the country.
“ He commended President ( Emmerson) Mnangagwa for taking a bold decision to freeze accounts of companies suspected of fueling the instability of exchange rates , saying what is needed now is to act on such economic saboteurs , ” the broadcaster reported .

Zimbabwe’ s last currency , the Zimbabwe dollar , became moribund in 2009 following a spell of hyperinflation and was replaced by a basket of multi - currencies which included the U. S . dollar , the British pound, South African rand , Botswana pula , Japanese yen , and the Chinese yuan .

The U. S . dollar remained the dominant currency but became scarce over time and pushed the central bank to introduce bond notes and bond coins in 2016 to plug the resultant cash gap .
The bond notes and coins were at par with the U. S. dollar at their introduction but have over the years continued to lose value and are currently trading at around 14 to 1 U. S . dollar at the inter - bank rate.

The government also re - introduced the Zimbabwe dollar in June , although in electronic form , to run at par with the bond notes and RTGS dollars.
The government also banned the use of foreign currency as units of trade.

Politics / Sugarcane Seller Arrested For Murder Of Colleague In Onitsha by Montracine: 6:32am On Oct 02, 2019
Sugarcane seller arrested for murder of colleague in Onitsha

The police in Anambra State have arrested a 20-year-old sugarcane seller for allegedly killing his colleague over a minor disagreement.
The suspect, Jubrin Mohammed, who hails from Jigawa State, was said to have stabbed and killed 25-year-old Hamisu Ibrahim, also a sugarcane seller from the same state, when both engaged in a disagreement on Monday.
A witness said both of them engaged in a hot disagreement, which led to a fight along the Onitsha-Enugu expressway, before the deceased was stabbed by Mohammed.
The witness, who pleaded anonymity, said all efforts by passersby to separate the fighters proved abortive as Mohammed, to their surprise of the onlookers, pulled a knife and wasted no time in stabbing Hamisu.

He further said that Hamisu was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but unfortunately gave up the ghost on the way and was confirmed dead by the doctor.
Confirming the incident yesterday, the state police public relations officer, Haruna Mohammed, said the matter was reported at the Awada Police Station and detectives attached to the Division visited the scene of crime and promptly arrested the suspect.
He said: “The victim was taken to the hospital where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor while relatives of the deceased declined autopsy on religious ground. However, photograph was taken and corpse released to relatives as requested for burial according to Islamic rites.”
Haruna said that the Commissioner of Police, John B. Abang, ordered the transfer of the case to the State CID for discreet investigation after which the suspect would face prosecution.

Politics / Chido Onumah: DSS Arrested Me For Wearing 'We Are All Biafrans' T-shirt (Photos) by Montracine: 6:18am On Sep 30, 2019
Real reason DSS arrested, released Chido Onumah

Sunday evening said he was told that his arrest was because he wore a shirt with the inscription: ‘We Are All Biafrans.’

The news of the Arrest Of Journalist , Chido Onumah, by men of the Department of State Service (DSS) on Sunday unsettled the media space and Vanguard can now confirm the real reason the author of the book, We Are All Biafrans was arrested and released after hours.

Upon arrival at Abuja airport 4pm on Sunday, Onumah spent sometime clearing his luggage and was expected to have dinner with a friend. He was waiting to confirm the venue of his appointment when a DSS official walked up to him, flashed his ID card and told him he was to be questioned in connection with a planned protest.

Onumah, who was wearing a T-shirt with the inscription, WE ARE ALL BIAFRANS, which happened to be the title of his new book, was led to the DSS office at Central Abuja.
During interrogation, he was asked why he was holding a Nigerian passport and he confidently replied that “I am Nigerian.”

The DSS officials queried why he was putting on the vest with the inscription, which he answered by telling them that was the titled of his new book. Onumah further told the DSS officials that he had more vests in his bag with the same inscription and won’t hesitate to wear either of them after leaving.

According to source, while at the DSS office, Onumah was reading a book while the officials ran a check on his profile. “That was when they discovered that he was more Nigerian as anyone can be.

“They (DSS) now told him (Onumah) that there was an intel they got about some people who were trying to cause unrest and he was picked because of the inscription on his shirt. They told him his shirt’s inscription could trigger an unrest and after much dilly daily, He Was Allowed To Take His Leave ,” the source said.

Politics / Murtala Snatched Ogbemudia From Ojukwu by Montracine: 8:42am On Sep 28, 2019
One young officer who understood his teacher well enough was Murtala Mohammed. As a cadet at the Regular Officers Special Training School [ROSTS] Teshie, Ghana, he emerged tops in Captain Emeka Ojukwu’s Tactics class.

Murtala left Teshie in 1959 for Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst and was commissioned Second Lieutenant in 1961. Ojukwu had joined the Army in 1957 from the ranks even with a post graduate degree from Oxford University.
Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia was at Teshie in 1957 before proceeding to Mons Officers Cadet School, Aldershot, where he was also commissioned Second Lieutenant in 1961.

The trio later served in the Congo as members of United Nations Peace Keeping Force. Ogbemudia was also in Tanzania with a Nigerian detachment under Col. Sam Ademulegun.
When Chukwuma Nzeogwu and his friends struck on January 15, 1966, Ogbemudia was not carried along. He was an Instructor at the Nigeria Military Training College [NMTC] Kaduna which was under the temporary command of the latter.
I listened to Ogbemudia stress this at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, Accra in 2002. He had to ask Nzeogwu what really was going on. Col. Ojukwu was commander, Fifth Battalion in Kano and kept Nzeogwu in check.
Murtala led the Counter coup of July 29, 1966. Ogbemudia was Brigade Major, One Brigade, Kaduna. Ojukwu stayed in Enugu as Military governor of the Eastern Region.
Ogbemudia narrowly escaped death after a hot pursuit by Lt. Bukar Dimka from Kaduna to the jungles of the Middle Belt. Ojukwu did not recognize Lt.Col Yakubu Gowon as Head of State following the assassination of Gen. Johnson Aguiyi Ironsi.

War was inevitable after a peace deal brokered in Aburi by Gen. Arthur Ankrah at Peduase Lodge, Aburi failed. Gowon created states, Ojukwu declared Biafra. Ogbemudia was floating in the Mid-West in what was called the Fourth Area Command.

A reliable source confided in me that Ojukwu and Ogbemudia were in talks. This was as the Biafrans occupied the Mid- West under Governor David Ejoor. Ejoor escaped but his Aide de Camp, Peter Adomokhai, was arrested. He ended the war at the Biafran School of Infantry as Instructor.
Lt.col Victor Banjo led the 101 Division that seized the Mid-West from Nigeria. He wanted to retain Ejoor as Military Administrator of an Independent Republic of Benin. The latter rejected the offer.
Banjo did not want to put an Igbo officer in that position. He was to approach Lt.col Rudolf Trimnell, seeing him as an Itsekiri. He did not know that Trimnell was from Ashaka in the Ndokwa area.

Ojukwu eventually settled for Major Albert Nwazu Okonkwo who had a brother in, Sule Kolo, of the Nigeria Foreign Service. Okonkwo belonged to the Medical corps of the Army.

Ogbemudia was seen as Bini by many. Ojukwu knew more than that. Major Ogbemudia was originally from Igbanke, an Igbo settlement formerly known as Igbo Akiri.
His mother was from Benin and had lost many children before Osaigbovo came. The name Samuel was significant. The boy had to leave for Benin to stay with a maternal uncle after spending some time in Igbanke.
While in the Congo, Ogbemudia was said to have walked into danger. It took the presidential intervention of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe to keep him in the Army.

Murtala also knew Ogbemudia so well. They shared similar background. The former grew up in Kano which was the home of his mother, Ramatu, a member of the Inua Wada family.
Murtala’s father was said to hail from Igbein, in the Auchi area of the Mid-West. Alhaji Usman Abuda, an Etsako blue blood, confirms that Murtala’s father had strong links with Auchi even if he was selling kola nuts in Agege, Lagos.
To stem the Biafran attack, Nigeria hurriedly assembled Two Division under Col. Murtala Mohammed. That gamble paid off as the tide turned. Benin was taken from the invaders and Murtala appointed Ogbemudia Administrator of Mid-West.

It was unusual. Ejoor was totally ignored after serving a sour tale of riding a bike to Lagos from Benin while many combatants knew he was in the house of a an Irish father in Benin City.
Gowon was not consulted before Ogbemudia’s appointment. However, the Head of State confirmed the change which left Ejoor, Service number N/17, without any command all through the war years.
Ojukwu’s loss was Murtala’s gain. Biafra eventually lost Benin and the Mid-West. Ogbemudia spent eight years as Military governor and was eventually sacked by Murtala in July 1975.

Strange enough, both officers were in London when Gowon was toppled. Murtala chose an Etsako man, Col. George Agbazika Innih, from Agenebode, as the new governor of Mid –Western State.

Murtala lived with his wife, Ajoke , a Yoruba, until he was killed in 1976. Ogbemudia had a wife, Yetunde Afolabi, from the South-West, when he passed on in 2017.
Ogbemudia also had another friend who was Head of State and was also killed, in 1979. Gen. Ignatius Kutu Acheampong was at Teshie same time as the Nigerian. Both were born in September. The former came in 1932 [September 17], the latter in 1931 [September 23].
In 2002, Ogbemudia told us a funny story at dinner in the Labadi area of Accra, not far from Teshie. Acheampong had thoroughly embarrassed the commandant of the military school.

He said:” The Osagyefo himself, Kwame Nkrumah, visited and was interested in the welfare of the cadets. The commandant made it look as if all was well until Acheampong went right under his bed to bring out the meal he was served.”
The commandant did not forget that and paid back. Acheampong once wore traditional ‘kente’ dress to dinner while others put on jackets.
“Acheampong, why are you wearing pyjamas to dinner”, the boss barked. It was supposed to be an offence but the cadet was not intimidated.
Ogbemudia felt some Bini touch in the Gold Coast. The Ga people are said to have migrated from Benin during the years of Oba Udagbedo[ 1299-1334].

In 1966, the first coup in Ghana was codenamed, ‘Operation Guitar Boy’, after Victor Uwaifo’s famous track. Gen. Ankrah, the new leader, a Ga, was recalled from retirement.

A group based in Ondo state, Southwest Youth Congress (SYC) declared that all the attacks on the person of Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo are mere distractions and that nothing can stop him from becoming Nigeria’s president in 2023.
The group made this known on Thursday during a procession for Osinbajo’s candidacy in Akure, the state capital, according to reports by Legit Nigeria.
Bamise Akintomide, who led the state chapter of SYC, alleged that “desperate cabals” are responsible for the “campaign of calumny” against Osinbajo to stop the presidency from moving to the south-west.
“While we are confident that the perceived threat against Professor Osinbajo bears the imprints of a desperate cabal’s wicked strategy for relevance, sadly they have also enlisted the support of agents of calumny of an equally desperate opposition,” he said.
“It is our considered opinion that such a campaign of calumny against a decent character like the Vice-President will not hold water in the eyes of right-thinking Nigerians.
“We do know that the orchestrated allegations against Professor Osinbajo, especially the baseless accusation of misusing a non-existent 90 billion naira campaign fund, are all targeted at achieving the singular objective of dissuading the vice president from considering the idea of running for the presidency in 2023.
“While Mr Vice President has not told anyone that he will be running for office in 2023, the South West Youth Congress will like to emphasize that the leadership shown by Professor Osinbajo over the period he has worked alongside President Muhammadu Buhari to pilot the affairs of this country have proven his capacity for effective and result-driven governance, and it is our hope and desire that come 2023 he is on the ballot to run for the highest office in the land.

“If he decides to contest, it’s our belief that he is immensely qualified and therefore he has our support and deserves the support of all well-meaning Nigerians.
“While it’s true that there is no amount of gimmicks or lies that can stop Professor Osinbajo from becoming Nigeria’s president if God so wills.

A Nigerian woman identified by her Twitter handle as @Kessiedoll has shared her house hunting experience in Lagos, stating that it has been frustrating.
The young woman explained that she has met with only stiff reactions from landlords, especially the Yoruba ones, who immediately reject her when they know that she is Igbo.
Citing an example of when she had already paid for an apartment, @Kessiedoll said she was waiting for her landlord to sign the agreement, but asked her to come back for her money when he realised she was Igbo.

In another example, she said that a landlord accepted to rent out his apartment to her but his wife refused, stating that she doesn’t want her to ruin her marriage because she is her husband’s spec.
The Nigerian woman said that house hunting in Lagos has really been challenging and being a single, light-skinned Igbo girl, has not made it easy. She noted that the experiences used to make her cry but she developed a thick skin towards it

Politics / PDP: Buhari’s Off-the-point Answers At UNGA Confirm He Is Unqualified by Montracine: 5:49pm On Sep 26, 2019

Press Statement

Buhari’s Off-the-Point Answers At UNGA Confirm He Is Unqualified
…Berates Presidency For Insulting Nigerians

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says that President Muhammadu Buhari’s off-the-point answer to questions at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) interactive session is a further confirmation that he lacks the prerequisite education to hold office as President.

The party holds that President Buhari’s off-the-point speech on climate change, as response to direct and simple question on his plan for the youth, confirms Mr. President’s personal inability to understand and effectively communicate in English language as required by Section 318 (iii) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The PDP notes that President Buhari’s failure to comprehend the question put to him and respond accordingly trashes his claims of attending education to school certificate level and possessing a WAEC certificate, and further brings to light the reasons for his inability to attach any educational certificate as required in INEC form CF001.

The party states that it was obvious to all that because of President Buhari’s inability to understand and communicate in English language (as required by the constitution), he failed to distinguish the fact that the text already prepared for him by his handlers had no correlation with question put to him at the UN.

Nigerians can now see why the Buhari administration has remained miserably incompetent, lacking in tact and desired capacity to manage the affairs of a nation as complex, demanding and multifarious like Nigeria.

Moreover, it has also exposed why the Buhari Presidency overtly lacks the intellect and confidence to engage other world leaders, a situation that has led to the diminishing of the integrity of our nation in the international arena, in addition to the dearth in foreign direct investment under his watch.

The PDP therefore cautions the Presidency over its press statement in which it poured insults on Nigerians for commenting on President Buhari’s embarrassing outing at the UN.

Instead of insulting Nigerians, the Presidency should apologize to our citizens over the embarrassments constantly brought to our nation by President Buhari.

Politics / Anambra Earmarks N6bn For Cargo Airport by Montracine: 5:32pm On Sep 26, 2019
The Anambra State Government has earmarked N6 billion for the construction of the Anambra State International Cargo Airport at Umueri, near Awka, the state capital.

Governor Willie Obiano made the disclosure at the presentation of the state 2020 budget to the state’s assembly on Thursday in Awka.

He announced that a total of N22.2 billion was estimated for the construction of roads and bridges, while N6 .98 billion was set aside for implementation of strategic initiatives in the health sector.

Mr Obiano, who later hosted stakeholders at the Government Lodge in Amawbia, near Awka, said his administration decided to invest in the airport to actualise the promise he made during 2017 governorship campaign.

The governor said constructing an international airport in the state would boost economic development and increase the income base of the state.

He said critics of his administration would be shocked at the pace of work at the airport’s site after the rainy season.

Mr Obiano, who also spoke extensively on what his administration was doing in the health sector, urged residents of the state to embrace the state’s health insurance scheme.

“A lot of testimonies are being given on the state health insurance scheme, due to the effective nature of the scheme.

“I am appealing to the people of Anambra State and to non-natives residing in our state, to register with the scheme because of the immense benefits of the scheme,’’ he said.
