This is a phenomena prevalent in the Southern parts of Nigeria as opposed to the Northern parts of Nigeria.

The preferance for fair skinned women is minimal in the North as a large population of them are indeed darker skinned.

The Southern parts of Nigeria however historically have had ladies of a lighter hue, take the Igbo for example who have been known to produce both males and females of this tone and who's culture has adopted this fascination with the differences in skin tone with a preference for fairer skin maidens.
