@ femmmy,

I watched a documentary video organized by Multi feed, that is what multi feed use----- very mighty cages, more than 20ft deep and radius. But fully automated...feeding, harvest, processing, packaging. Everything is fully automated.

Ahh! Oyibo pass us oo

6000-8000, indeed u wont bother about some of d things u mentioned, but u have to bother that their growth rate shouldnt be of large variation or you have some feeding big on d ones not catching up

I think its cost effective compared to concrete ponds.

It cost me about N700k to build a 3 units concrete ponds of a total capacity of 5,000 to table size. This floating cage system is a better and cheaper option. For fear of cannibalism stock at melange stage and feed regularly. We need to move fish farming back to the river, its far more cost effective.

My only fear is since its floating I hope those boys will not paddle it away at midnight. And in case of oil spill you may lose all your stock!

not to bother yourselves much,to enjoy fish farming use materials u can manage effectively & check cost also.that floating cages u see cost 1Million naira only

The floating cage of N1m, how many table size fishes can it take?

If one can have that you won't bother about changing water, pollution, nepa bill, neighbour's wahala etc. You focus on feed and security.

the floating cage

Thanks for the pix. Though the image is not clear enough to know how the cage really look like

I like the concept of floating cage in a river. You may stock at melange stage to avoid sorting, cannibalism etc but my fear is that when your fish might have attained 1.5 - 2kg and you are ready to sell, you get to your farm and see nothing!

I means since its floating and in water, its proned to outright theft! Local fishermen can come at midnight when you are already snoring and paddle the entire farm away.

From what I see in that pix, if you are not a typical fisherman that can stand/stay at the centre of water ----large water you may have to reconsider it. This one nor be tapauline, concrete or even earthen pond. .......did you see the massive water? Am already shivering.....

one more thing, he is giving me more 100 juvenile, he said the usual practice is customers get 50 fish per 1000 so you get 1050 instead of 1000, now he will give me 2100 juvenile fish instead of 2000.

is that it? does other hatcheries give more than this?

For juveniles, some give 20 only

you are sharp. 1.)I made a little research and got to know that most of the ingredients are more nutritious when boiled in water compared to when roasted and pelleted, the only problem is that you need a good binding agent that very little quantity of it is enough to bind a larger quantity of the proteins involved.
and another thing about fishmeal is that most of it is gotten from fish dirt and its so expensive why not buy a cartorn of raw fish 20kg for 5750 than buying same 20kg of fishmeal for 14k. 5 minute parboiling and cutting to tiny pieces is all you need.

Good research and thanks for sharing it.

But note that the peleting machine boils the feed before bringing them out in shapes (mm) . Try feel one during production, it will nearly burn your palm. Same with extruders - that one cooks the feed. If you are used to feed mills the fine aroma you get is better than fast foods.

bro I don't understand ur point here for 50 pieces I don't get it as in 50 pieces of table size sold for #400 abi hmmmmm.pls expansiate on d selling more Thks.

In Benin City, market women don't buy on flat rate per kg. 1kg fish is about N400 and non of them is ready to buy N1 higher. I've been monitoring price since October and its been the same.

Is this same in other region of the country?

Pls share the selling price in your region

Poultry business is not gambling it's only when you don't know anything about poultry, then it becomes gambling. Go for practical training on poultry, see things for yourself and participate in them, ask questions. then you know poultry is business and not gambling

On point. Best advise so far

Thank you

Hello guys,

Pls what is the selling price of fish in Benin now? I got this chart from somewhere:

50 pieces =N400
40 pieces = N450
30 pieces = N500

Meaning an average of 1kg fish is N400..............so unfortunate

Chairman, you sound like a seasoned fish farmer and doing well at it . . . Why not expand in the fish farming for now and grow big enough there before moving into a poultry? Just a suggestion.

My Oga, well said. I wanted to expand oo but couldn't get a fish farm to rent. Buying land and construction is quite expensive and I can't afford that for now. Am operating at full capacity at my present location hence need to expand. I even have reservation on birds........plenty vaccines and medications, marketing etc. The medications you give birds can cure HIV

I would have prefered fish anyway

Hello guys, I need advise from experienced farmers

I've been in fish now for about 3 yrs, every corner of my house is pond except space for my 2 cars. I want to rent a farm but what is available now is poultry farms. I am thinking of divesting into poultry, I've already negotiated somewhere for rent, I need all necessary info on poultry online or otherwise.

I am wondering why there are poultry farms available while fish farms are not. PLEASE I need contributions from (poultry) farmers.

You can post your response here or moses_eke@yahoo.com

Links are welcome.

Thanks

Great buy it seems but not really.....
7500kg fish per month means roughly 1.5m Naira a month profit
ROI Should be 20 year consider maintenance. ... on a second though 20 years return is too much for a goos investment. .... if 8 years, might be considerable.

On the contrary.......

If truely the farm can guarantee a montly turnover of 7,500 kg per month, this is about 1.5m profit monthly.
25,000,000 / 1,500,000 = 17 months (apprx).

This means you recover your investment within 2 yrs.

Meanwhile, this is also subject to being able to stock, maintain and operate at full capacity. Don't use your last card to buy while you can't stock and feed.

You can even decide to rent out the 3 bedroom flat

Thanks dear. What type of pond did he construct? Did he leave the roof of the house or did he remove the roof?

Thanks one again.

He dug the floor and set blocks just like earthen pond. The roof is intact

Like I said earlier, I won't encourage you to do this.

Please pardon me if i have asked this question b4, can fish ponds be set up in block houses meant for human habitation? I ask this cos we have 2 flats empty in our compound.

Sumone in this thread set up hatchery in a room in his flat, plz do u have fish pond in that flat? is it possible?

The answer is yes.

The guy who introduced me into fish in herited his father's 6 rooms "face me I face you" house. He started by setting tiny ponds around the fence, graduated to creating pond at the only available space at the back yard. In January this year he evicted a tenant and converted the room to a pond (about 10 ft by 10ft). In July he evicted another tenant and constructed another pond in the room space. In September he evicted the 3rd tenant and did broilers. He occupies 2 rooms and have a tenant. Do you the that tenant will survive next year in that house?

His reasons:

His tenants pay N2,000 a month and its not regular
2000 *12 = 24,000.

He stocks 1000 table size and sells at about 2kg within 6 months makes about 150,000
150,000 * 2 cycles =N300,000.

According to him he makes about N300,000 for the same space.

I hope that answers your inquiry.

Warning: this is a live scenerio but I won't encourage you to evict your tenants for fish oo.

Merry Christmas all

Pple av used dem as ingredients with fantastic results. Palm oil is expensive and dats d reason why palm oil sludge is used. 10L in 100kg feed is ideal.

Oga Belexy thanks for the knowledge you've been sharing. I beg to disagree with the above quote, 10ltr of palm oil sludge or any liquid substance to 100kg feed will be too much. The feed will be too watery even for the peleting machine.

Thanks guys,
@ Fhemmmy these are from the concrete pond, i dont have earthen pond yet but like i said in my earlier post i am hoping to contruct a little one next year for the cultivation of broodstock

@ Belexy, i agree with you, but presently i dont know much about formulating local feeds and to be honest the comparative cost advantage will need to really be much for me to consider adding local, cos if i consider all the wahala of trying to source the various ingredient with constant fluntuation of price and scarcity of some of the ingredient it just sometimes discourage someone, and when you want to run a smooth operation with consistency the last thing you need is the unavailabilty of some key vital ingredient. even maggot that is almost free the wahala of that one sef no be small thing, how many fowl shiiiiit i go carry and store to become maggot for me to feed between 2000 to 5000 ( assuming thats someone stocking level) on a consistent basis agreed it could act as a supplement.

@ Komakan, thanks, i agree with you but anyone who is lying is only deceiving themselves, so far majority of the farmer here have been honest, posting but their success and failures, if you like go and take a photograph of a shark and put it here to say your fingerlings don grow reach shark size in 2 months, we will just be laughing at you lol but on a serious note its needless to falsify stuff cos no one know you face to face so its your business.
i for one i have spoken to a few people i have met on this thread and this website ie Robonski, Fhemmmy alias the novice and these guys are men of integrity.

On a final note, we are currently negotiating a supply deal with an eatery, they want us to be supplying them between 70 to 100kg every two weeks, the gurus in the house what will be the frequency of stocking to be able to cater for these kind demand and is it feasible, the price they are offering seems reasonable at 500 naira per kg. i will also ask this question in the question and answer section on agricnetwork.

i salute the house

Nice job Jites.

Given the price of fish NOW N500 per kg is not bad. But if its they are consistent I think you should have a fixed price and don't fluctuate like the market woman. I supply a few eateries in Benin and I sell at N600 per kg for about 2yrs now. I don't supply less than 2kg per fish(Just trying to create a standard)

Many thanks brother,I have said it all the other time when I posted all that is to be done. Let me say it again, you need to start production,a good smoking kiln, you need to be mindful of the king of smoke, electric is highly preferred than other because of too much of heavy metals, you need to carry out a test on your product yourself,NAFDAC is looking for the heavy metals,if its above the required amount by WHO,they will disqualify your product...once you are sure that this is less than the required standard...you prepare the kind of packaging you want to use, anytype should not allow water, you package it seal it and ready for the market...To learn this in details..you need to give me an invite to your desired place so that I will inspect and teach you all you have to do and how you will go about it...its something worth it if you need it.
That's all

You will have to follow some procedures when processing and it must be in an hygienic environment. You will have to do some biochemical tests as well......after which you will now invite them for inspection, they will take your product with them as well for test before they give you the nafdac number.

mail me for more details at drtitilade.olu@gmail.com

I will suggest you say the details on this forum instead of personalising it. We are here to learn and share information. Even if you are consulting for them this will be an opportunity for people seeking such info to contact you.

Pls let us know all you know about smoked fish and nafdac registration.

excelsiorfarm: d question also to ask is do your fishes go back to feed on d feed previously vomited, if yes, that means/possibly shows that d time of feeding isn't favorably, too cold or too hot, as mentioned earlier bad water can also cause it, constipation/abdominal pain as a result of contaminated feed, unpalatable feeds also can be a factor, stress also - in case u wonder how stress comes in, when your water is bad, polluted, d oxygen becomes low & your fishes are in stress, if they dont feed at all, they are sick or disease
