TOKUGAWA: Bros don't try it o!i once tried it in 2009,it was a total disaster, those Fishwomen would offer you ridiculous prices believing you've run into problems and need to sell off your fishes fast. Its better you go to the market and sit down with the women and sell to consumers directly,or you supply hotels and joints directly.

Thanks for the advise.

I actually intend seling directly to restaurants and hotels.
My inquiry is if picanto or rio is strong enough for that inter city runs.

Pls who has used a picanto or rio.

Hello guys,

First am happy Chelsea won Swansea City.

Now back to biz: I intend to buy a car for hawking my fresh and smoked fish not more than 50 to 100kg at once. Which kind of car would you recommend? I am thinking of a small car like Rio or Picanto.

What do you think will be ideal.

TOKUGAWA: the results has been tremendous, they get an average of 1kg plus.My dad is also using it. Another thing is the popular Egusi we eat,it can be mixed with Bambara, Egusi has 24% protein. Mixed with Bambara .Fish oil can only be added for flavour purposes. My 2 months old fish will be starting 4mm local tororrow. Hence,I will be milling their feed tomorrow as well. I intend to use the following formula. Soya 20kg,,bambara 50kg,,GNC 20kg,,egusi 20kg,indomie 25kg,,Gala 20,local fish 20kg,broiler starter 25kg. 1 ltr of livtovit and a sachet of Aquapro. That's for 180kg.

A satchet of Aquapro for 180kg is not enough. It is recommended to use a satchet for 50kg, so your 180kg should be about 4 satchets approx.

eazeefix: Hello everyone I have been following this wonderful thread for long I believe it is one of the best thread on NL. The data loss was unfortunate but we still have tonnes of valuable info here, kudos to all the gurus, potential gurus and all contributors. I am interested in fish processing (smoking) but I haven't been able to locate any deep discussions on its market potentials and buyers. I am presenting a proposal to an investor next week and the marketing part is lacking in the proposal. I am based in Ijebu ode. Wouldn't mind public or private discussion with practicing catfish smokers. Whatsapp 08023116432 email; eazeefixng@gmail.com. Thanks. Once again kudos to everyone.

Please if you have anything on smoking fish, kindly let me know too 08033843462, moses_eke@yahoo.com or 2279AA70

Tnx

Unfortunately went bad, gives naija bad name, I would rather not go into partnership, but a loan(if reasonable) is better option, so before any man go into d biz, have d insight, start small/reasonably & grow your farm, dont go borrowing, raise funds from close people rather, create an exit plan i.e if u plan to raise to 1kg, if funds run out at 400g, sell or smoke & package your fishes, dont kill yourself on looking for cash

I told somebody that in fish farming you hardly lose as long as your fish get up to 300g; cos at that weight even if you can't smoke, you can sell as melange and still make profit.

Its not do or die if you run out of cash.

retin01: my Oga inthe house the kiln and d aerator is ready but I will b going to somebody farm by next week to test d aerator in d vat. D kiln uses gas and charcoal ,and electricity to power d turbine. With time I will go 4double door kiln. NB Catfish smoking business is a booming industry recently but must of them are not properly processed. Majority of the smoke catfish in the local market are processed using ovens with firewood or sawdust which exposes the fish to a lot of smoke containing carcinogenic material called Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). These substances can cause cancer in the long run for whoever is eating food materials exposed to them. This is one major reason why most of the smoked catfish produced locally can not be allowed to pass the US and UK border when one is doing a formal exportation ( watch-out for the next post to read about formal and information exportation) Apart from the fact that one can not export any fish containing high PAH, it is also very stressful and unhealthy for the person processing the fish. Considering the fact a lot of educated people are going into farming business and many of them that are fish farmers prefers to add value to their harvest rather than sell it to the market woman that end up pricing your harvest below cost of production. One of the few ways of adding value and making more profit from catfish harvest is by smoking and smoking should be done in the proper way using ovens that exposes the fish to zero or minimum PAH. This can only be achieve by smoking your fish with charcoal, gas or electricity.
Both gas and electricity expose your fish to almost zero PAHs why charcoal exposes the fish to minimum and neglige-able PAHs

Good job bro!

I was in Osaretin's lab before NL crashed/data loss but have reserved my comment until now. The guy is simply amazing. He does so many things apart from kiln and aerator.

He is based in Benin City, Edo state. I indulge every farmer in this forum and farmers around Edo/Delta statees to patronize him. Meanwhile I will take the lead as I'm in dire need of one immediately

Retin, this is an opportunity for you to explode.

Feed fish with chicken?

You nkor? Which one will you prefer?

excelsiorfarm: whether constructive or otherwise, my bro from your writeup, u had being using/had use this system before, from your experience, u will be able to assess if that system suits u or your target sir, that times a man's doing might not meet up your goal, some straight local, some mixed with maggot, even dead animals, some straight foreign, i would have suggested that original coppen replace durante(almost and at times same price), for d fishes to accept your local feed well & at any stage, try to make your feed have a reasonable fish meal % in it(your formulation), God bless

Well said. I practise the above system and get about an average of 1 to 1.5kg in 5 months from fingerlings using concrete ponds.
With the formular below:

Maize 26
Sbm. 20
Gnc. 28
Ffs. 10
Fm 72. 15
Lysn. 1
Salt. .5
F prx. .3
Aquapro. .1
Enzyme. .1
Oil. 2
Dcp. .2

I think the result is not good enough. Kindly review again and respond. Ikg in 5months when people are posting 2 to 2.5kg in 6 months.

Pls what should be done to achieve a better result?

Professional criticism wanted!

I use Durante from .7mm to 2mm, Ranaan/Aquamax/Vital from 3mm to 4mm. Local feed from 4mm to sale. But I usually feed with my local then augument it with floating after every feeding. I mean when I give local say 8kg,they also eat about 10kg floating. This continues till a month before sale. I am looking forward to making them accept my feed till sales without supplementing it with extruded feed.

Request:
Kindly advise if this practice is ok?
Kindly advise otherwise

Constructive criticism is welcome

Indomie/Flour/Biscuit are the same.
The only different is that flour bind the feeds very well more than indomie and biscuit.
Although, indomie and biscuit have nutritional value than flour
Thus, you can make use of any of the three above.

I like this guy. I like it when people talk with confidence. I appreciate you Ab1x

I will advice you first fumigate but i don't really know any chemical/substance to use, someone can assist on this. wash your vat thoroughly with detergent and rinse well with water. Test the P.H of your water to ascertain its level if you need to treat the water or not.

Thanks bro

excelsiorfarm: let me just come in briefly, before u even think of chemical to fumigate with, u have to know d purpose, u fumigate first, then wash your vat, though advisable to cover your vat, reason is if u use a strong chemical/solution, d residue might not be washed effectively, hence when water react with it, it will keep your fries, if your water is good, why treat it, ever heard of people dying from carbon monoxide i.e. Smoke from generator,if d outlet or space is small or not properly ventilated, this fumes can dissolve in d water of your ponds, react, produce carbon dioxide, which we all know doesnt support life,u know fries can be fragile

Thank you sir,

I guess I will just wash d vat and hatch but find alternative location for the yeye gen

Dear gurus in the house I have a question, I have not used my hatchery for three months now and the place is also used as generator house (6kva petrol gen). I intend to hatch say next week. questions :

1 do I need to go ahead wash the vats and hatch or fumigate first?
2. I've never fumigated before, if I have to fumigate, what chemical/substance do I use to?
3. Do I need to treat my water before spawning? If yes what chemical/solution is required? And how?

Thank you

Tukugawa you are da bomb! This is impressive! This is my first time of seeing images of real earthened pond. Am so used to and build concrete ponds. But I have some concerns: the pond seems to be located in a forest what is your source of water and when the water gets dirty or polluted how do you flush and replace? Second is security, how do you secure the farm from people stealing your fish. And what is the size of this pond?

Pls any experience earthen pond user can provide answers

Agriculture / Re: Hidden Truths About Catfish Business!!! by mozek24: 12:32pm On Dec 19, 2013
@ omode 24, a peleting machine is simply a machine that mould feed ingredients into shape and sizes (mm). When you gring and mix all your ingredients for local feed, you simply pour them into the peleting machine to produce the feed into different mm - 2, 4,6mm as the case may be.
They come in different capacity and costs. The one am using is about the smallest. - 50kg/hr costs about N220k depending on where you buy. I got mine from a coy in Ibadan.

Complement of the season guys,

I want to appreciate every contributor to this thread and even the readers too, you may not know what you have. This information is enough to make a book!

I am based in Benin Edo state and information on fish farming is hotcake, you pay for every little tip. Its very fraustrating and discouraging. Nobody tells you anything cos they want you to keep buying from them and they are full of fraud. No need saying how I paid for one useless feed formular, runt fingerlings etc until I was connected to one lolif farms in Lagos. May God bless him and his business. I call and ping him always, he calls regularly for follow ups, even when I offered to pay him he refused stating that am just a stater. And guess what? HE IS A MUSLIM, am so impressed. Though I don't disturb him again cos am gaining experience but I can never forget him. At a time he advisedme that I've grown beyond buying imported feed that I should buy a peleting maching and proccess my feed. And that's what we do now.

Am only trying to show appreciation here and encourage those that have something to give to do that (freely). Like in my case am looking for opportunity to repay this guy in a big way. Without boast or pride I am better that those guys who introduced me into this (for exploits), when you hoard information you don't learn. They now ask me how I do it and I teach them freely.

If you have any opportunity to add value do it (freely). We met it and we shall all leave it; so impact life.

Thank you lolif farm.

Food / Re: FG Bans Fish Importation by mozek24: 6:29am On Dec 12, 2013
Well, I know some people are very angry with govt probably due to so many failed policies and poor infrastructure but we also have to look at the positive side to every policy. If there is a ban, there is a ban; and nothing we say here can change it. Instead, we should take advantage of it. Some of us are well read and looking for a white collar job and when it does not come on time you are very angry and looking for every opportunity to throw blame. Apart from govt some even blame their parents for being poor. Or blame God for making them a Nigerian. WRONG!

What I like about this govt or this period is that it gives us the opportunity to think positively and be creative. Forget about certificate, think of how to add value with or without assistance from anyone be it family, friend or govt. Start something now no matter how small. An average person on Nairaland is educated/exposed. Whatever you do now you do it better than the ordinary man that didn't go to school.

Some of us are too proud to bend, change that orientation.

The ban on imported fish has created a very big market for the smart guys. Open your eyes and ears. You can choose to be among the smart ones.
