A two-year-old Nigerian boy who was found emaciated and riddled with worms after his family left him for dead has made an incredible recovery. A picture of the starving toddler being given a sip of water by an aid worker broke hearts around the world when it was published last month. The boy, now called Hope, was abandoned by his family because they thought he was a witch and was found in the streets by Anja Ringgren Loven, a Danish woman living in Africa, on January 31. And now Ms Loven has shared a series of photographs showing Hope’s miraculous recovery in just eight short weeks, and says he ‘is really enjoying life now’. Back in January, Ms Loven found the boy after he had spent eight months fending for himself and living off scraps. She bent down and gently began feeding him and giving him water from a bottle. She then wrapped up the disorientated toddler in a blanket and took him to the nearest hospital for treatment. When Hope reached the hospital, he was given medication to remove the worms from his belly and daily blood transfusions to incorporate more red blood cells into his body, Ms Loven said. And two days after Ms Loven asked for the community’s help with Hope’s costly medical bills, she received $1million in donations from around the world. Just eight weeks later, Hope is unrecognisable. He has gained weight and has been pictured smiling and playing with other children. Ms Loven is the founder of African Children’s Aid Education and Development Foundation, which she created three years ago to help children who have been labelled witches and therefore neglected or even killed by the members of their community. ‘Thousands of children are being accused of being witches and we’ve both seen torture of children, dead children and frightened children,’ she wrote on Facebook, accompanying images of her feeding the young boy and appealing for donations to help pay for his medical bills. ‘With all the money, we can, besides giving Hope the very best treatment, now also build a doctor clinic on the new land and save many more children out of torture!’ she said. Ms Loven runs an children’s center where the children she saves live and received medical care, food and schooling. She and her husband, David Emmanuel Umem, began building their own orphanage in late January. The Niger delta Avengers a militant group in the Niger delta region of Nigeria who have claimed responsibility of various pipeline attacks in the oil rich Niger delta have declared its readiness to embrace any collective/negotiation team emerging from the Chief (Dr.) Papa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark Niger Delta elders and genuine stakeholders conference to engage with the federal government of Nigeria, representatives from the home countries of all multinational Oil Corporations and neutral international mediators that will be focused on achieving the short, medium and long term frameworks and objectives to de-escalating conflicts in the Niger Delta. The group stated this on their website, claiming the struggle has always being a Pan-Niger Delta one, and it is aware of the anti Niger Delta elements using some disorganized characters from the region to scuttle all effort to restore the essence of Humanity, resources control and self-determination. It said most of their frameworks and objectives are clearly stated in various reports, declarations and recommendations of the likes of the Sir.Henry Willinks minority rights reports of pre-independence Nigeria (1957- 8 ), The Kaiama Declaration document, The General Alexander Ogomudia report, The Leedum Mittee headed, Niger Delta Technical Committee report and restructuring to fiscal federalism. It further stated that : We have resolved to reject any idea of the peace of our times; we want the peace with honor this time around! Our advice to our Niger Delta elders and genuine stakeholders is that, whenever this inhuman project called Nigeria and her government is ready for dialogue/negotiations with them, this mandate should be treated with that care as driving a vehicle like that of a truck laden with fire. We are going to continue the observation of our unannounced cessation of hostilities in the Niger Delta against all interest of the Multinational oil Corporations, but we will continuously adopt our asymmetric warfare during this period if, the Nigerian government and the ruling political APC continues to use security agencies/agents, formations and politicians to arrest, intimidate, invade and harass innocent citizens, suspected NDA members and invade especially Ijaw communities. We promise to fight more for the Niger Delta, if this opportunity fails. Therefore, we will give our Niger Delta elders and genuine stakeholders that tacit support to the dialogue table with the government and the Multinational oil Corporations whenever the enabling environment prevails. We also use this medium to warn those using rogue platforms like the defunct so-called MEND, RNDA- Cynthia Whyte especially Charles Okah who is franchising these internet based banditry from his prison cell, through Victor Ebikabowei Ben (Boyloaf), Timipre Silva, Selekaye Ebikabowei, Ayirimi Emani, Michael Johnny, Governor Adams Oshiomole to please inform those their paymasters that the days of doom are here. That those sold and bought up interests from around the corridors of power cannot arm-twist the NDA with bandits, drug addicts, illegal bunkerers, bank robbers and disorganized characters to derail the Niger Delta struggle. ABA—Soldiers have launched a manhunt for publishers of pro Biafra newspapers in Aba, Abia state. A vendor who spoke on the condition of anonymity told Radio Niger delta that a group of soldiers accosted him and some of his colleagues demanding them to disclose the identity of the publishers of the Biafra newspapers circulating in the city. Radio Niger delta gathered that one of the vendors identified as Emeka is suspected to have been arrested by soldiers. Recall that soldiers attached to the 144 Battalion Asa, Ukwa West Council area, had on March 14, 2016, confiscated unsold and new editions of pro- Biafra newspapers; New Republic, Vesym, Freedom Journal, including copies of Authority newspapers in Aba. Some of the vendors have devised strategies to conceal and sell the pro Biafra newspapers and magazines which are in hot demand in the city. Pro Biafra newspapers sell more than national newspapers in Aba. A publisher, who declined to be named for fear of reprisal, in an interview with Radio Niger delta, condemned the action of the military, and denied that pro Biafra newspapers incite hatred among the people, stressing that they only publish Biafra stories as some national dailies do. “We are publishing only reports about Biafra like other national dailies do. Let the military go and close down all the media houses because they are carrying Biafra stories, after all, we are not the only people publishing stories on Biafra.” As at the time of filing this report, efforts to get the reaction of the Army Public Relations Officer, 14 Brigade Ohafia, Major Sidney Mbaneme, proved abortive as his mobile number was unavailable. source: www.radionigerdelta.com.ng/2016/08/army-launches-manhunt-for-pro-biafra.html?m=1

ENUGU—Enugu State government has taken another giant stride to ensure quality and affordable education through the provision of one free meal daily for its pupils in primary one to three. Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of the state who inaugurated a steering committee to drive this free meal project yesterday stated that his administration was not only committed to move education to the next level but that it would make the development projects in the sector sustainable. Prof. Uche Eze who is the state commissioner for education heads the steering committee and explained during the inauguration that the introduction of the single free meal daily for pupils in primary one to three would stimulate sustained attention by the pupils as well as encourage school farming since the feeding is home-grown based. Governor Ugwuanyi who was represented by his deputy, Mrs. Cecilia Ezeilo while inaugurating two separate committees–Science, vocational and Technical education and the free meal steering committee- at Government House, Enugu noted that his government had made human capital development its priority: “It’s a surest way of sustaining the future of the people,” he told the gathering at the Executive Council Chambers. Local government workers in the State were owed between five and seven months’ salary arrears despite the fact that the Bayelsa State government obtained federal government bailout funds meant to offset salaries in States owing workers. Thugs believed to be sympathetic to the Bayelsa State government attacked a peaceful protest in Yenagoa on Tuesday led by the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and the Medical and Health Workers Union (MHWUN), demanding salary arrears and alleging diversion of the federal government's bailout funds in Bayelsa State. The thugs resorted to violence as they manhandled the protesting workers, including journalists who covered the protest. Local government workers in the State were owed between five and seven months’ salary arrears despite the fact that the Bayelsa State government obtained federal government bailout funds meant to offset salaries in States owing workers. According to a statement issued after the protest by the Joint Council of NULGE and MHWUN, the protest was in line in the struggle to improve the welfare of workers in the State. The statement was signed by Mr. Tonye Jaja, NULGE, and Mr. Arafat Nwibani of MHWUN. "We are demanding that the affected Chairmen of Councils and the Commissioner for Local Government should immediately pay from the bailout funds workers of the affected councils to avoid unpleasant consequences and sustain the peaceful industrial atmosphere in the system. "We unequivocally demand for the full payment of the salary of March; we demand the release of LGAs’ allocations to the councils immediately," the statement stated. Journalists were beaten up by the thugs with some sustaining injuries and losing their valuables, including cash and gadgets. One of the victims, Mr. John Odhe, a reporter with the State-owned newspaper, Newwave, said his experience was a horrible one. "It was like a movie as the thugs descended on us and started manhandling us with planks and stones,” Mr. Odhe said. “Thankfully, I managed to escape.” www.radionigerdelta.com.ng/2016/08/thugs-attack-and-disperse-protesting.html?m=1
