Eight West African countries Saturday agreed to change the name of their common currency to Eco and severed the French-backed CFA franc's regional currency that dates back to the colonial era.

These countries are Benin, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger, Senegal and Togo. All are former French colonies with the exception of Guinea-Bissau.

The president of Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara, speaking at a joint news conference with the visiting president of France, Emmanuel Macron, said on Saturday that the bloc was changing the name of the C.F.A. franc, used in eight West African countries, and renaming it the Eco.

Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara, speaking at a joint news conference with the visiting president of France, Emmanuel Macron, announced the reform of the long-disputed CFA franc on Saturday, a currency that is used in eight nations in West Africa.

C.F.A. stood for the French Colonies of Africa when the then-colonial power introduced the currency in 1945, though it was changed after independence to the Financial Community of Africa. It is seen by many as a relic of “Françafrique,” the unofficial system under which France exerted influence over its former colonies in sub-Saharan Africa long after independence.

Most of the criticism of the C.F.A. has centered around the requirement that the countries that use it are required to keep 50 percent of their foreign currency reserves in the French treasury. Under the agreement between France and the eight countries, this requirement will be scrapped when it becomes the Eco, as will the stipulation that a French representative sit on the currency union’s board.

The agreement with France and the Monetary Union of West Africa (UEMOA), which is currently led by Ouattara, will advance the “eco.” The new currency replaces the CFA and broadens the possibility for the 15 members of ECOWAS – with some UEMOA nations overlapping – to adopt the currency as well.

“This is a historic day for West Africa,” Mr. Ouattara said in the Ivorian capital, Abidjan.

Macron hailed it as a "historic reform", adding: "The Eco will see the light of day in 2020."

Jesus College is set to return a controversial bronze cockerel that was looted from Benin, Nigeria in the 19th century, following a successful campaign from students to reject the “spoils of war”.

The sculpture, known as the Benin bronze, was stolen by Victorian explorers in 1897 and has resided in Cambridge:s Jesus College since 1905.

The bronze cockerel which was taken by British colonial forces in 1897 and donated to Jesus College Cambridge is to be returned to Nigeria in an unprecedented step that adds momentum to the growing repatriations movement.

The Okukor, described by the college as a “royal ancestral heirloom”, will be one of the first Benin bronzes to be returned to Nigeria by a major British institution since the punitive expedition in 1897 when thousands of bronzes were stolen from Benin City by British forces.

Sonita Alleyne, the master of Jesus College, said the decision was not taken to “erase history” but came after “diligent and careful” work that looked into the wider legacy of slavery at Jesus College. “We are an honest community, and after thorough investigation into the provenance of the Benin bronze … our job is to seek the best way forward,” she said.

"The Benin Bronzes were a collection of 3,000 pieces of art taken by British troops during reprisals for the killing of nine of their countrymen in a trade dispute between London and the Benin monarch.

No specific date for return has been released but the college stated that the bronze cockerel “belongs with the current Oba at the Court of Benin”.

Two Nigerian Innovators have recently been announced by the United Kingdom’s Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) as candidates for the Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2020.

The innovators, Aisha Raheem and Victor Boyle-Komolafe, were shortlisted alongside 14 engineers and entrepreneurs for developing solutions that address local challenges across sub-Saharan Africa.

The selected innovators will benefit from a unique package of support over the next eight months to help them accelerate their businesses.

Innovation: Farmz2U

Farmz2U is a software that helps farmers and families prevent food waste and enhance nutrition by using tech solutions.


2. Innovator: Victor Boyle-Komolafe
Innovation: Garbage In, Value Out (GIVO)

Garbage In Value Out (GIVO), automates and digitises the collection, processing and sale of recyclable materials.


According to the academy, the two Nigerians (Aisha Raheem and Victor Boyle-Komolafe) along with the 14 other selected innovators will benefit from a unique package of support over the next eight months to help them accelerate their businesses.

The innovators shortlisted from the award were selected from across six countries and six of them are women.

The winner of the pitch will be awarded £25,000 as the winner of the 2020 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation while the runners-up will each be awarded £10,000.

Currently, in its 6 year, the prize aims to stimulate, celebrate and reward innovative engineers from across the continent.

Attacks from herders killed more Nigerians in 2018, compared to the number of deaths caused by Boko Haram in the country, according to 2019 Global Terrorism Index (GTI).

The GTI report released on Wednesday ranked Nigeria, for the fifth consecutive time, since 2015, as the third country with the worst impact from terrorism, globally.

Afghanistan, meanwhile, has overtaken Iraq to become number one on the list, while the latter moved down to the second position.

Syria, Pakistan, Somalia, and India are ranked fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively in the GTI report, while Yemen, Philippines, and Democratic Republic of the Congo are eighth, ninth, and 10th.

The report said terror-related incidents in Nigeria increased by 37 per cent, from 411 in 2017 to 562 in 2018 and also deaths from terrorism in the country rose to 2,040 in 2018, a 33 per cent increase.

"The increase was due to a substantial escalation of violence by 'Fulani' extremists, whilst Boko Haram recorded a decline in deaths from terrorism," the report said.

Dispute over ownership and usage of land has remained the major cause of the violence conflict between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in Nigeria.

The deadliest terrorist incident in Nigeria in 2018, according to the report, occurred on May 5 when assailants attacked Gwaska, Kaduna.

The report said 58 people were killed in the attack, which it said was attributed to 'Fulani extremists'.

The GTI report attributed the decline in Boko Haram attacks to a multinational task force fighting the terrorist group.

Nominated in the same category with Burna Boy is Altin Gün (GECE), Bokanté & Metropole Orkest Conducted By Jules Buckley (WHAT HEAT), Nathalie Joachim With Spektral Quartet (FANM D’AYITI) and Angelique Kidjo (CELIA).

Burna Boy follows in the footsteps of Seun Kuti, Femi Kuti and King Sunny Ade in getting nominated in that category at the Grammy Awards.
