B737 Air Peace plane crash landed at the Murtala Mohammed airport, Lagos, after losing one of its tyres, this afternoon. The aircraft was conveying passengers from Port Harcourt, Rivers state. No casualties recorded.

The Ghana Navy has rescued 8 crewmen on board Turkish vessel, Paskoy-1 after they were attacked and abandoned on sea by pirates in Nigerian territorial waters.

The vessel was en route La Cote D'Ivoire from Cameroon when the pirates kidnapped 10 crewmen of the total 18, including the captain of the vessel. The pirates were believed to undertaken have done so for ransom, for the release of the captives.

The rescued 8, have been brought to the Tema Port, where the Ambassador of Turkey has been contacted to arrange for their safe travel back to Turkey and other necessary arrangements.

The Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, Ozlem Ergun Uluren, who confirmed that the rescued 8 are in good health, expressed appreciation to the Ghana Navy and allied security authorities for bringing the troubled Turkish crewmen and vessel to safety in Ghanaian waters.

Commodore James Kontoh, Flag Officer in Charge of the Eastern Naval Command, bemoaned the threat the Gulf of Guinea is posing on travelers but affirmed the Ghana Navy's resolve to ensure Ghana's territorial waters remain safe.

“The Gulf of Guinea area has become very notorious, in terms piracy and kidnapping, but our resolve is to make sure our territorial waters are safe. We have been carrying out vigorous patrol, to make sure that they do not come here.”

South Sudan 's President Salva Kiir has banned anyone from singing the national anthem unless he is present, according to a government minister.

Information Minister Michael Makuei told AFP news on Monday that different leaders and institutions were playing the anthem at whim, which was an abuse of the national tune, written shortly before independence in 2011.

"For the information of everybody the national anthem is only meant for the president, in a function only attended by the president, not for everybody," Makuei said.

"We are seeing now even a minister, undersecretary, even governor or state minister, whenever there is a function, the national anthem is sung."

He said Kiir's order was passed during a cabinet meeting on Friday.

Makuei said that with the exception of South Sudan's embassies, which represented the president, and schools where children are taught the anthem, no one was allowed to sing the song in Kiir's absence.

The minister said that military leaders had also been banned from addressing the public when in uniform.
He did not give details on what the punishment would be if the orders were not followed.

"These are orders and of course when you disobey the orders of the president then you carry your cross," Makuei said.

Benue State tribal leaders, weekend described as reprehensible the directive by the National Secretary of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, MAKH, Alhaji Saleh Alhassan, that herdsmen should defend themselves in any part of the county, warning that it was an open declaration of war on Nigerians.

The leaders urged the federal government to treat the issue with all the seriousness and attention it deserved by inviting the leadership of MAKH, for questioning.

Alhaji Alhassan was reported to have said: “We are Nigerians and we have a history. Anybody that thinks he can wake up and take on the Fulani pastoralists is making a grievous mistake. We are well prepared to defend our fundamental human rights of movement in this country. They (herdsmen) are Nigerians, so they are entitled to stay where they are. They should remain where they are and defend themselves against ethnic militia and assert their citizenship in this country.

“The only thing we would say is that we will hold all the governors of those states responsible for their (herdsmen) safety and security, but if any ethnic militia, by any name, attacks our members, they should defend themselves in a manner that nobody would try such again.”

But Benue tribal leaders in their reaction yesterday through their Chairman, Chief Ujege said “the order by Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore was an open declaration of war on Nigerians because they are already prepared for that.

“Rumours have it that they enjoy the support and get manpower from outside. So the call by their leadership is just a ploy to deceive the people and the world that they are the victims when they are actually the aggressors. This is actually a warning signal. This was how the Benue pogrom started and it entails that the government must act fast to reposition and overhaul the security apparatus in the country in case of any eventualities and also ensure it is proactive enough to protect the people.

“In the past, this same group issued several threats on Benue state claiming ownership of the Benue valley, after which attacks were launched on Benue communities leading to the death of thousands of innocent people.

”Unfortunately, we made several calls for the arrest of the leadership of MAKH but not one single person has been arrested till date despite all the bloodshed in Benue, it is sad. Well, this fresh threat is basically their own another way of calling for war because they are already prepared and are attacking, maybe they want to do it on a bigger scale now.”

A member of Nigeria's air force has returned a parcel to its owner that contained 37,000 euros ($41,500; £33,300) in cash, the air force says.



Bashir Umar is a member of the force's Mobile Air Defence Team that is deployed to Kano airport, northern Nigeria, for security duties.

The air force in a statement said he was on routine patrol with his colleagues when he found a parcel containing the lost money at the Hajj Camp Market in Kano on Tuesday.

Instead of keeping it, the air force says the serviceman found a telephone number on the parcel which turned out to be the contact for the money's owner.

Mr Umar will now be rewarded "so as to encourage other personnel of the service", the air force says. Exactly how he will be rewarded is not clear.

This isn't the first time honest staff have returned forgotten valuables at Nigeria's airports.

Last August, the airport authorities in Lagos honoured two security guards for returning a "sum of money and expensive items", and in September, a cleaner was commended for returning "lost valuable" of a passenger.

Sierra Leone has won the 2019 Jollof Competition in held in Washington, District of Columbia (DC).

The West African country beat off stiff competition from neighbouring nations Nigeria, Liberia and Ghana.

Nigeria came third, behind Liberia while Ghana managed to vlinch the fourth position.

Sierra Leone was represented in the Jollof Competition by Carol Mabinty Khanu, a 26-year-old chef.

“I mean I couldn’t be more proud to win this competition, especially being in the DC metropolitan area, the African diaspora is very diverse here so it was an honour to have won and represented Sierra Leone and have us win the best Jollof amongst all these wonderful countries that competed,” Sge said.

The competition was hosted at the Pupils Heart at the College of the District of Columbia (UDC) on July 6.
The festival was organised by Afrooilitan Insights, which is founded by one Ishmael Osekre.



“We are incredibly joyful for Carol and we desire her and all other winners and individuals the greatest on their individual journeys, they all immensely contributed to the achievements tale that this festival has developed into given that we began in 2017,“ Mr. Osekre told TheAfricanDream.net.

The first-ever Jollof competition held in Washington DC was in 2017 and was eventually won by Nigeria.

Jollof rice remains one of the most common dishes in Western Africa, consumed throughout the regions of Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Togo, Liberia, Niger, Mali, Ivory Coast and Cameroon.

In recent years, there has been constant debates between Ghanaians and Nigerians over which country served the best Jollof.
