Orji Kalu, a Nigerian senator who was jailed for allegedly stealing public funds, has been released from custody, PREMIUM TIMES has learned.

Mr. Kalu, a former Abia State governor, was freed from the Nigerian correctional facility in Kuje, Abuja, on Friday morning, two sources familiar with the development said.

He has now moved to his residence off Queen Amina Street within the perimeter of Aso Rock Presidential Villa, sources said. The sources spoke under anonymity because they were close to Mr Orji and did not get immediate permission from him to disclose his release to the press.

Mr Kalu’s release came moments after the Supreme Court voided his conviction in December 2019 in a multi-billion naira corruption trial.

Mr Kalu had been accused of pilfering and mismanaging funds belonging to Abia State during his days as governor between 1999 and 2007. He pleaded not guilty and appealed his conviction by the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court.

On Friday morning, the Supreme Court deemed Mr. Kalu’s conviction inappropriate and ordered a retrial of the case, according to multiple media reports out of the court.

A seven-member panel of the apex court, in a unanimous verdict delivered by Justice Ejembi Eko, declared that the conviction null and void, Channels TV reported Friday.

According to the report, Justice Eko declared that Justice Mohammed Idris, who convicted Mr Kalu, was already a justice of the Court of Appeal, when he ruled and sentenced Mr Kalu and his co-defendant.

He held that a Justice of the Court of Appeal cannot operate as a judge of the Federal High Court, and ordered the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court to reassign the case for trial, the report said.

Following reports that senator, Dino Melaye, and actress, Iyabo Ojo will be getting married soon, the actress has in a new video rained heavy curses on people she termed ‘ingrates’.

Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, a human rights activist, former Minister of Aviation, and a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has attacked the Group Managing Director of Access Bank, Herbert Wigwe, for planned sack of over 75% his workers.

In a leaked digital room virtual town meeting, the bank had announced plans to sack its workers as a result of the negative impact of the Coronavirus outbreak.

Herbert Wigwe had said that apart from the mass sacking, which would affect about 75 per cent of the bank’s workforce, he would take the lead in having the largest pay cut of 40 per cent.

“I will be the first to take the hit and I’m gonna take the largest pay cut, which would be as much as 40 per cent,” he said.

It was gathered that many of the bank’s staff received their sack letters via email on Thursday.

Reacting on Sunday in a post on his Twitter page, Fani-Kayode accused the Bank GMD of betraying his workers to appease President Muhammadu Buhari .

He recalled that Access Bank had donated N1 Billion to help the Federal Government combat Coronavirus (COVID-19) .

Chief Fani-Kayode wrote: “You gave 1 Billion Naira to the FG to fight Covid 19 & the next day you sacked hundreds of your loyal staff. Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's chief of staff has died after contracting the novel coronavirus, the presidency said on Saturday.

Buhari's office announced in a statement that it "regrets to announce the passage" of Abba Kyari, who acted as a gatekeeper to the president of Africa's most populous nation.
"The deceased had tested positive to the ravaging COVID-19 and had been receiving treatment. But he died on Friday, April 17, 2020," the statement said.

Kyari, in his 70s, was the highest-profile COVID-19 death in the West African country, which has 493 confirmed cases and 17 deaths, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

Influential technocrat
The influential technocrat, who was reported to have suffered from underlying health issues, was seen as one of the dominant figures in the tight-knit group of advisers around Buhari.

He reportedly controlled access to the president, a 77-year old former military ruler now in his second term as a democratically elected leader, overseeing key meetings and granting audiences.

Kyari tested positive for coronavirus in late March after visiting Germany, forcing a string of top Nigerian officials who had been in contact with him to self-quarantine.

In a statement released on March 29, Kyari said he had been transferred to Lagos, Nigeria's biggest city, for private medical treatment and hoped "to be back at my desk very soon".

There has been no official confirmation on whether Buhari has taken a test, but the president has since made repeated televised speeches imposing restrictions to curb the spread of the virus.

The central government has imposed a lockdown on Nigeria's economic hub Lagos and capital Abuja, while state governors have ordered a number of measures in other regions.

Economic consequences
The extension of the lockdown is expected to add to the hardship of millions of Nigerians living hand-to-mouth, often on less than one dollar a day.

Buhari said on Monday he was "fully aware of the great difficulties experienced especially by those who earn a daily wage".

"But despite these realities, we must not change the restrictions," he added.

The government has pledged a series of support measures to ease the financial pain for the most vulnerable, but there have been widespread complaints that not enough is being done for those facing hunger.

"The vast majority of Nigerians depend on daily wages, they have to go out to get money and buy food to put it on the table for their families," Al Jazeera's Ahmed Idris, reporting from the capital, Abuja, said.

"For the next two weeks, they are going to stay at home with no work and no chance of getting money."

Experts say the country of 200 million is highly vulnerable to the spread of the disease given its weak healthcare system and high population density.

The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Saturday that Africa has now more than 1,000 deaths from COVID-19

A total of 52 of the continent’s 54 countries have reported the coronavirus, with the overall number of cases more than 19,800.

The World Health Organization on Friday noted a 51% increase in cases in Africa and a 60% jump in deaths in the past week. But the WHO chief warned that because of a shortage of testing “it’s likely the real numbers are higher than reported.”

The Africa CDC has said more than 1 million test kits will be rolled out starting next week.

Nigerian actor, Zubby Michael has swung a heavy jab at his fellow actor, Yul Edochie, after the latter proposed a suggestion to the Federal Government as regards the COVID-19 crisis in the country.

Shortly after the President declared a total lockdown to be observed starting from Monday, 11:00 pm in the three states with the top cases, actor, Yul Edochie took to his page to suggest that the President provides economic relief package for Nigerians.



His suggestion was seconded by some of his colleagues but one who didn’t stand with him is actor, Zubby Michael who says he should practice what he preaches “because charity begins at home”.



The actor who seems to somewhat know Yul Edochie’s character revealed that he’s quite a wicked and stingy being and as such shouldn’t be the one to give such suggestions since it’s not in his character.

A househelp met her waterloo after stealing from a Lagos family that employed her two weeks ago.

Her boss who confronted the househelp as seen in videos she shared, identified her as Esther USEN Achiebong from Cross River State.

Tracynither Nicolas Ohiri revealed that Esther had only worked for her for 13 days before stealing her children’s piggy bank which had N64,000, clothes and household items. Upon being confronted after the security guard confessed to knowing about the theft, the househelp reportedly ran into the guest toilet with a knife.

When this same President, as a military Head of State, came in 1984, December 31, and said our hospitals had been reduced to consulting clinics; it was a confirmation of the struggle of the Nigerian doctors. If you can go abroad for treatment, you must fix our hospitals to international standards, so that every Nigerian can have quality health care.”

“We had paid $200m and there was a penalty that if the contract was cancelled, Nigeria would pay colossally. We were dragged to arbitration, I don’t remember the figure now, but we were fined. So, metro line, we don’t have; money we have lost and inconvenience has continued since then.

“So, we also have a right, if we are organised in a civilised manner, to demand from the Abuja people, ‘You must pay back the cost of that metro line that you cancelled; so that we can restore it.”
