You biological people can't think outside the basis of sex. Gender identity is how you want the world to see you regardless of your sexual orientation, you can transition and still be attracted to whom you are attracted to. For example, there are trans men who are still attracted to men even before or after transitioning hence why they refer to themselves as gay men.
