Recently i reacted 2 a thread on this forum and the reaction has been overwhelming.i want 2 say thank u 2 all that called n sent sms.
A particular Nairalander called and i had 2 visit his fish farm,alas, i was devastated when i got 2 a farm where he claimed 2 have invested over N3m, there was nothing 2 show 4 it.All that was on ground were 4 open concrete tanks and 2 over-sized earthen ponds. I listened 2 him as he spoke passiomately about is love 4 fish farming and his investment,when he was done i was able 2 point out some his errors 2 him,which include d following
1. Assuming because somebody's farm is doing well,urs must do well too
2.assuming u dont need any form of training, all u need is 2 read book n consult d internet
3.assuming u dont need d assistance of professionals
4.wrong pond design n construction
5.poor water management
6.poor feed management

One major problem we have is the 2 weeks fish farm training and 1-day seminars where they misinform people that they can become millionaires over night through fish farming. It takes time, patience and experience to make millions from fish farming,which many people dont understand.

Here are some of the mistakes a lot of people make in starting a fish farm.
1. Failure to involve a fish farm expert right from the beginning if you are not one yourself.This will save you a lot of money and inconvenience later on as the farm progresses
2. Failure to carry out water analysis on the water to be used, thinking that any water can be used for fish farming.
3. Failure to investigate the history of the site to be used for the farm.
4. Failure to acquire training on fish farming before venturing into the business.A lot of people assumes they can always go into fish farming because a neighbor is successfully into it
5. Hoping to raise money as the fish are being raised. Every fish farmer should set capital aside his/her for the venture before starting the farm.
6. Feeding fish with dead animals picked on the street, hoping to reduce the cost of feeding by doing so.
7. Indiscriminate dumping of unwashed maggots into the fish pond.
8. Siting your farm too close to a river, thinking that it will ensure all-year round water supply
