For starters 5speed Automatic gear transmission was not available to most passenger vehicles during the year of manufacture of your Mazda 6 xedos. That said, what your car is having difficulty in selecting is 3 and 4 gear ratio. My advice do not use the vehicle until you have done the 80 - 20 oil change. See link below of the recommended oil grade for available models of mazda 6 xedos. Misterpaul:App link has already been posted Park the vehicle on a flat ground and allow transmission oil to cool, the mechanic should then drain the oil from the gear box. Once all the oil has been collected, what you see collected in the pan is but 80% of the whole oil that was in your automatic transmission. If you have been using the manufacturers recommended transmission oil, then you will not need to follow the procedure for oil change stated on the previous page. All you need do is pour in the recommended amount of liters specified by vehicle manufacturers. NOTE: Always use manufacturer recommended oil grade for your vehicles oil change Dottore:Well Said... the axle design is what makes the difference between a transmission that is modified to tow and that which is not modified to tow. |

With the above in mind You the need to pay more attention to your vehicle via preventive maintenance to avoid huge future expenses. As far as Automatic Transmission Goes the following should be done: 1. Have an app that would alert you on upcoming oil change 2. If it is a Nigerian Used vehicle assume that the wrong transmission has been used to top the gear box oil over time or do an oil change and start afresh with an oil that has appreciable shelve life and meets manufacturers standard. 3. Follow the 20 – 80 rule in transmission oil change. Which means 20% of old Oil remains while just 80% is drained out. So in the case of correcting the wrong transmission, you do the first change with the right oil after draining all the old oil. Ensure its gauges, drive the car for a short while say 2days and have the oil drained then do a second change and take note of the milage of the vehicle when the second change was done N/B Allow gear box oil to cool before total oil change 4. If your Automatic transmission shifts with a jeck feel discontinue use of the car until you have changed to the right oil, also if your transmission can not shift into Drive, you probably would need to have it checked by a PROFESSIONAL before considering gearbox change. 5. NEVER tow a vehicle with an auto transmission N/B When in doubt verify from vehicle manual if your vehicles Automatic transmission is designed to tow as most front wheel drive sedans are not. 6. When attempting to drive out of a mud or low traction ground shit to D1 or L on your transmission. For newer vehicles that have just PRND use the semi automatic and shift to First Gear to get your vehicle out of the mud. DO NOT stress the vehicle while its in Drive hoping to harder you accelerate would get the vehicle out. 7. Ensure your cooling system has ONLY coolant (which are of two kinds premix and concentrated) and not just water (as is the practice in Nigeria). Reason been that newer automatic transmissions run the ATF through the radiator of the vehicle to via Heat transfer cool the transmission oil. High temperature is generated in the gear box and this is the MAIN REASON why the right transmission oil grade with which the gear box was designed be used. 8. Feel your car when driving…if you want to do a quick get a way or over take DO NOT just floor the gas pedal rather take your feet off the pedal engage the gear from D to D3 then gas it mid way to give you a thrust when clear of the vehicle you just over took, take your feet off the pedal and return to D. Or in newer automatic transmission before the over take switch to semi automatic and engage the 3rd Gear and MOVE! 9. When you go through off road tarrain (like most nigerian highways are) be mindful that your gear box case is aluminum and if you hit a ditch/pot hole you could crack the gear box bottom plate and have oil sip through. 10. Use an app that would notify you to check you gear oil every week and do an oil change within the recommended mileage or oil age which ever comes first. updated 22.02.2016 16 Likes 4 Shares |

Acknowledge the following 1. that you are now in possession of a USED VEHICLE which probably may have passed the dealers warranty. 2. Previous owner (in this case Onyibo)may or may not have done all that is needed to keep the vehicle in top shape 3. The Chairman who drove the car via the bush to beat customs or robbers may have driven the vehicle like it was stolen – HARD AND FAST 4. In most cases the Car may have been parked for a long time since it was last used by the Onyibo owner and as its typical with mechanical parts long period of idleness is bad for mechanical systems. 1 Like |

[size=13pt]1. Have a budget 2. Get more than one referral to the particular dealer you want to buy the vehicle from or buy a vehicle from the owner who is PERSONALLY known to you. 3. Have proper documents with valid registration of both parties 4. Check inside of the Engine oil Cap, if it shows signs of smudge that is an indication that the owner has poor oil change intervals. 5. Finger Test – With you index finger rub from inside to outside of the exhaust outlet at the rear of the Car if thick deposit of sooth is there, this is an indication that the Car’s emission is bad. What to look out for is a fine film of sooth and not heavy deposit of sooth. 6. Cooling system test. i. Your mechanic would tell you use water. This is not what the manufacturer requires of you. Your engine block and radiator a made from corrodeable materials, and water is an agent of corrosion and that is why Engine coolants have been formulated by various companys to minimize corrorsion in the Engine Block, Radiator Fines and Transmission Pipes. Yes the gear box of modern transmission vehicles from 2002 to date have a pipe that pass the Coolant through the gearbox as the gear box generates a lot of heat so the coolant would help transfer this heat away from the gear box while the right transmission oil does the rest. ii. Open the Radiator Cap and ask the dealer or owner to start the Car. If the water flows in the radiator, that is an indication that the water pump is work. IMMEDIATELY TURN OFF engine and have the Radiator cap properly replaced. N/B : If your radiator coolant shorts after 1week then you have a leak, have a professional check your cooling system. Coolant should be changed 1ce a year to get rid of free radicals as well as have the rotary parts in your cooling system in good condition. 7. Christmas Light test – If all sorts of light show up on the dash board that is an indication that a lot of error codes and diagnosis need to be done on the Car. The following lights should be paid attention to i. Air Bag Light – If this light remains on, its an indication that something is wrong with the particular Air Bag. Failure to have it checked by a professional and you could risk it deploying at anytime or not deploying at all ii. Check Engine light – If this remains on then ‘check engine’. iii. Pump Light – If this remains on then find out from the Nigerian Car owner at what point the light started coming on. iv. ABS – If this remains on then it should be scanned and checked for what error code N/B a. There should be NO LIGHT what so ever on your vehicle’s instrument panel while the Car is in motion. Any light that comes on should be queried, the mechanic myth ‘ Oga the light no mean anything, you can drive the car like that’. The learned Car owner should be the wiser. b. Not every mechanic who has an OBD device knows how to use it, or has updated He’s and most of all be sure that the OBD device used can scan codes of you Vehicle Make/Model and Year. 8. Gear Box Test – AUTO TRANSMISSION: a. Locate the Auto gear box dip stick and colour of transmission oil on the gauge if its brownish red and not clear red, that is an indication the Car is due for a transmission change (will update on how this should be done, the myth of ‘DO NOT CHANGE TRANSMISSION OIL’ is what it is – a myth) b. Ask if the Car has been moved from rest that day, better if the response is ‘NO’. If the Car is parked on a flat ground better. Start vehicle and engage gear in ‘D’. If the vehicle slams into Drive with a sound – CAUSTION. While driving pay attention to the Gear Change if its not smooth – CAUTION. And finally if when you slow down and you feel the Gear dropping gears – CAUTION. MANUAL TRANSMISSION a. Have a proffessional check the guage of your Manual gear box oil. If it is low, kindly use manuafacturer recommended Manual Gear Box oil grade 9. Wind Screen & Door Glass test. Look at the stamp on the windshield. If the Vehicle Make stamp is not on any particular Wind screen or Door Glass. That is an indication that it was replaced, find out if it was done properly in the case of windshield, so as to avoid cases of water leaks during the raining season 10. AC Test. i. If the AC is not working, find out why. Compressor change is not always the solution. ii. If AC works and engine goes off when driving in the afternoon heat, then check your vehicle cooling system as over heating is a possible culprit. iii. If AC does not cool properly it would need to be checked by a professional and ensure you have the right COOLANT in the compressor once the whole diagnosis is done. 11. Paint Job Check the thoroughly, ask if the paint was ever changed, if you suspect a colour change on the vehicle. CAUSTION If 3,4,5,7 and 8 do not check out that means the vehicle scores 5/11 Its up to you to know if that is a pass mark, but if 3,4,5,7 and 8 are the only areas the vehicle scored PASS, this implies that it scored 5/11 be advised that you bargain for a better prize for the vehicle in question. Check reviews online of the said vehicle so you are sure the car meets what you want from a vehicle 3. Run a VIN check on the vehicle to determine the following i. Maintenance history of vehicle ii. Status of the vehicle ie if flooded, salvaged, reported stolen and so on 4. soon as you have receipt of the vehicle PLEASE use OEM engine oils and transmission oils (that is the vehicle manufacturer requested grades of these oils not what the BRAND the mechanic says is ‘good’. ) 5. insideout: insideout:[size=13pt]Only an experienced eye (AC Technician can tell) can tell you, but there is a way of finding out. The side where your compressor is located, you turn the front tire away from the compressor so you can see the compressor pulley, watch the spining of the compressor pulley (ie disk on which the AC belt attached rotates) this pully should stop spining at a time while the belt will still be running. Now what the technician would look out for is the smoothness of that opperation, that way he would know if your clutch engages fine and if your compressor thermostate is in order. The soloution to your AC issues is a technician who knows what to look out for, from what you say the AC Unit to the best of your knowledge has not be worked on in Nigieria. Go online and begin the process by filling your details and that of the vehicle, NB: Ensure you have a vaild registration with the FRSC as that would be verified from the FRSC portal by the Police Officer incharge 2. Go to the Police HQ in your respective state and ask for the SIB office 3. At the SIB Office you indicate if you are doing a fresh application or revalidation 4. For Revalidation or Fresh application as the case may apply, tender the printout of your e-application 5. The officer after verifying your vehicles registration online would as for you to be captured 6. The officer would then ask for your phone number so as to contact you soon as approval has been granted your application The above was how my application went.
