You know Nigerians don't like reading what is true.

They prefer hearing lies that they are in a democracy and they are the ones that will decide who their leaders will be if only they unite and come out to vote.

Please stop telling them the truth and allow them to exercise the democratic rights that their colonial master set-up for them to have before granting them the so called independence.

6. Roads extremely bad, frequent power cuts, corruption and a lack of jobs for young people.

7. Successor inheriting a country facing attacks by Boko Haram militants in the north.

8. Deep economic frustration among young people.

9. Access to quality healthcare out of reach for many. Access to medical healthcare abroad, which the ordinary citizens cannot access due to poverty.public services at home struggle.

10. Anytime they have a cold, they run overseas and are taken care of, but others die because of lack of care.

A president who is rarely seen

Biya is Cameroon’s second president since independence in 1960 and one of the world’s longest-serving leaders.

He has spent extended periods abroad during his presidency. But his latest absence has revived questions about his health and who is running the country while he is away.

Rumors about Biya’s health and whereabouts have long been part of public life in Cameroon, where he is rarely seen in public. His office has repeatedly had to push back against speculation that he was seriously ill or had died. In 2024, the government banned media discussions about his health, calling them a national security matter.

Biya’s long rule also reflects a wider contrast across Africa. The continent has the world’s youngest population, but several countries are still led by aging leaders whose political careers began decades ago, including former liberation figures now governing in a different era.

For millions of Cameroonians, Biya is the only president they have ever known.

After more than four decades under the same president, questions about his leadership have only grown.

Despite being away, Biya has continued to make key decisions from abroad, including a major military reshuffle announced earlier this month. Yet questions about his prolonged stay overseas have left officials publicly assuring Cameroonians that their president is still alive.

Government spokesman Sadi dismissed concerns about a power vacuum, telling RFI that “President Paul Biya is alive” and “will soon return.”

From hope to frustration

Few imagined that the man they saw as a new beginning would remain in power for decades. For his critics, the disappointment is not just about how long Biya has stayed in office, but what they see as his failure to improve the lives of ordinary Cameroonians.

Political analyst Collins Molua Ikome, a Cameroonian based in Germany, said he saw some of the country’s problems firsthand when he visited Cameroon in April.

“Roads in Cameroon are extremely bad. I even witnessed a fatal accident,” he told CNN.

Ikome also pointed to frequent power cuts, corruption and a lack of jobs for young people.

Wilson Tamfuh, a public and international law professor at the University of Dschang in West Cameroon, said the country has institutions that can keep the government running when the president delegates responsibilities. Key duties, he said, can be handled by the prime minister, the secretary-general at the presidency and ministers.

But the bigger question, Tamfuh said, is whether the government is solving the country’s longstanding problems.

“People want the Anglophone crisis resolved, standards of living ameliorated, more good roads, fewer people on the streets with degrees, and more,” he told CNN, referring to the years-long separatist conflict in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions.

Whenever Biya eventually leaves office, his successor will inherit a country also facing attacks by Boko Haram militants in the north and deep economic frustration among young people.

Healthcare is another concern. Ikome said access to quality healthcare remains out of reach for many Cameroonians.

“Life expectancy in the country is below 70 years. However, Biya has far outlived that due to access to medical healthcare abroad, which the ordinary Cameroonian cannot access due to poverty,” Ikome said.

The divide is not unique to Cameroon. Across Africa, political elites have often sought healthcare or maintained homes abroad, even as public services at home struggle.

“Anytime they have a cold, they run overseas and are taken care of, but the other Cameroonians are dying because of lack of care,” he said.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 67-year-old Nigerian-British grandma following the discovery of 13kg of cocaine in her luggage at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, on Sunday. in Abuja.

The anti-drug agency said the drugs were concealed in peels of plantain, which appeared as real plantains and were packed among other food items.

Mr Babafemi said the suspect, who works as a caregiver in the UK, was arrested at the departure hall of Terminal 2 of the Lagos Airport while attempting to board a Virgin Atlantic airline flight to London on Sunday, 28 June.

He said that a thorough search of her bags resulted in the discovery of 31 big wraps of cocaine, which were packaged to appear like plantain hands, weighing a total of 13 kilograms.

“In her statement, the elderly woman admitted full ownership of the recovered cocaine exhibits,” he said.

In another development, he said, a sting operation in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monday, 29 June, has resulted in the arrest of a 45-year-old PhD student at the University of Putra, Malaysia, over the seizure of 5.80kg of cocaine.

Mr Babafemi said the drugs were concealed in the walls of nine cartons of Orijin bitters, a consignment that was part of a consolidated cargo heading to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

He said the arrest of the suspect in Anambra followed the interception of 36 parcels of cocaine, with a gross weight of 5.80kg, concealed within the walls of the herbal drink cartons.

Four suspects were initially arrested in parts of Lagos during the investigation, including a driver who delivered the consignment to the cargo agent.

“Also, a trader at ASPANDA market, Trade Fair Complex, Lagos, handed over the consignment to the driver for delivery to the cargo agent.

“There was also an accomplice who supplied the cartons of Origin bitters used in concealing the cocaine.

“The efforts eventually paid off, leading to the unmasking of the main suspect hiding in his village, Aziora, Ozubulu, Anambra, as the leader of the syndicate,” he said.

In another development, in Taraba, NDLEA operatives, acting on credible intelligence, on Saturday, 4 July, arrested a suspect with 43,980 capsules of Tramadol.

Mr Babafemi said the drugs were concealed inside two vehicle fuel tanks along Zaki-biam roa,d Wukari Local Government Area of the state, while coming from Onitsha, Anambra state.

“Two suspects were arrested in possession of 1.7 kilograms of methamphetamine by NDLEA officers on Thursday, July 2, during a raid operation at Gwantu, Gwantu LGA, Kaduna state.

“A 65-year-old suspect was nabbed with 231.7kg skunk at Ikwo, Ebonyi state, on Saturday,” he said.

Similarly, a 75-year-old grandpa was arrested in possession of 15kg of skunk at Kurgwi, Qua’anpan Local Government Area (LGA), Plateau State, on Friday, 3 July.

Additionally, in Gombe State, NDLEA operatives acting on credible intelligence on Wednesday, arrested two suspects at Kuri village, Yamaltu- Deba LGA, where they were found with 587 blocks of cannabis sativa, weighing 556kg.

With the same level of dedication, Mr Babafemi said that commands and formations of the agency across the country have continued the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation activities.

The campaigns, he said, were carried out in schools, worship centres, workplaces and communities, among other places, over the past week.

The NDLEA, he added, took the campaign to students and staff of Girls Secondary School, Abagana, Anambra, and Government Technical College, Obe, Enugu.

Others include Adeola Odutola College, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, and FCE Staff Demonstration School, Kabuga, Kano State.

The NDLEA Chairman, Buba Marwa, commended the officers and men of the MMIA, Taraba, Kaduna, Ebonyi, Plateau, and Gombe Commands for the arrests and seizures.

He tasked officers to continue to raise the operational bar.

...Which leaves them no choice but to make sure that the facilities available to students in the country are befitting of their own children.That is how a country develops an actual elite.
