Politics / Is The President-elect Truly Sick! by MrFairplay4ume(m): 7:14pm On May 22, 2015 |
I'm a good fan of The general, but it seems to me he "might" have health issues with the news that he "secretly" travelled to London and according to Saharareporters his "close aides" were not aware of the trip. As much as possible we should prevent the Yar Adua's imbroglio. Note: I'm not praying for any bad thing but just scared of any unforseen circumstances. Nigeria is bigger than any body. Wishing the President-elect good health and strength to steer the turbulent ocean of Nigerian politics. Caveat: NO ill feelings!!!!!! 1 Like |

Politics / Jonathan A "Serial Lie" BY BAYO OLUWASANMI by MrFairplay4ume(m): 7:40pm On May 18, 2015 |
Since he (Jonathan) assumed office in 2011, corruption has gripped and crippled all sectors: oil industry, pension commission, the police, the military, aviation, civil service, mint and printing company, name it. The monies involved run into millions and billions if not trillions. He promotes corruption by his actions and inaction. He surrounds himself with felons and proven thieves and thugs such as Femi Fani-Kayode, Ayodele Fayose, Doyin Okupe, Kashamu Buruji, Bode George, Iyiola Omisore, and other illustrious criminals. He pardoned his former boss the poster child of corruption, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha. Our foreign reserve account, which was $62 billion in 2008, is down to $38 Billion while the excess crude oil account, which in 2009 was $20 billion is down to zero. The domestic gas project aimed at generating power has gulped $12 billion by December 2014 and nothing to show for it. Jonathan remains silent till now on N155 billion oil scandal involving government officials, Shell, Subsidiaries in Nigeria. The money was paid on the order of Jonathan to Malibu Oil and gas, a company owned by Dan Etete, a former oil minister under late General Sani Abacha. Ten billion Naira was expended on chartered jets by the oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke. On top of the $20 Billion missing from NNPC accounts, Alison-Madueke was involved on royalties and signature bonuses and was ordered by PriceWaterhouseCoopers auditing firm to refund $ 1.48 billion to the public coffers. Stella Oduah former aviation minister, with taxpayers' money purchased N225 million BMW armored cars for her personal use. Alison-Madueke on behalf of Jonathan bankrolled AIT $10 billion bribe to produce and air negative documentaries on leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) – Muhammadu Buhari, Ahmed Tinubu, and Yemi Osinbajo. Under Jonathan, the federal government's debt has risen by $18.40 billion (N3trillion) in the last four years. Jonathan paid N7 billion bribe to Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the group to campaign against Buhari. The cost of Jonathan's campaign for the March 28 elections was a staggering one trillion Naira. In fact, by the first week of March, Jonathan had spent about N1.05 trillion. A writer once described Jonathan as a “serial liar.” Each opportunity he has to address the problems of the nation, he oozes out a bagful of lies. Samples: Jonathan vows to end Boko Haram menace (AFP April 19, 2012). Jonathan vows 'Major changes' for Nigeria (Dailymotion, April 20, 2011). Nigerian President vows to Return nation to Order (Vanguard Apil 21, 201). Nigerian President vows to Strengthen Democratic Rule (Voice of America, May 30, 2011). Jonathan vows to “crush terrorists” (Reuters, Dec. 31, 2011). Jonathan vows not to shield any corrupt person from investigation or prosecution by anti-graft agencies in the country (NewsDiary, May 4, 2012). Corruption: No more sacred cows, Jonathan vows (vanguard July 26, 2011). I've fulfilled my promises to Nigerians – Jonathan (Premium Times November 11, 2014). |
Politics / Why Buhari Need To Meet Poor People Who Voted For Him! by MrFairplay4ume(m): 6:10pm On May 17, 2015 |
Ever since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared General Muhammadu Buhari the winner of the 2015 President Election, 500 or more dignitaries have either visited him at his country home or his temporary residence in Abuja. The photographs are there for all to see: dignitaries from around the country and around the world. That’s good, very good! But it is time we see pictures of students, market women, okada-drivers, the disabled, farmers and fishermen and everyday Nigerians visit the in-coming president. Considering the number of highly-placed visitors the President-elect has received, I suggest that he find time and space to host 50 or more everyday Nigerians. It is a democratic tradition that when you win an election, you invite representatives of your foot soldiers for a “Thank You” chat; or you go visit them to say thank you. In other words, after you win, you meet with your supporters to say “thanks” and there are usually photo-ops, too. Image and perception matters! You want to show that you are grateful. You want to show that you will never forget them. You want to show that you are on their side. You want them to believe that you will fight for their interest. You want them to have a sense of belonging and ownership. So, four years hence, the same group of people will not only join your army, they will recruit others to join. And so I ask: where are the representatives of the youths who spent countless days and nights and resources contributing to General Muhammadu Buhari’s historic victory. Where are the people who walked the walk, talked the talk and went to the polling stations to get things done? We want to see the President-elect meet with their “representatives.” He should go to them, or invite them! I repeat: there is nothing wrong with the President-elect meeting with bigwigs. Absolutely nothing! They have a role to play in the growth and development of our country. However, the everyday Nigerians have a greater stake in our collective destiny, in nation-building. When dignitaries begin to throw tantrum because their demands are not met, it is the people – everyday people – that the President would turn to for support and understanding and sacrifice. In the last couple of days and weeks, we’ve seen and read about how some bigwigs have been positioning and repositioning themselves. What did they contribute to this epoch-making era? But now they are joining the victory lap. Frankly, many of the pictures in the public domain elicit concern. Even so, I have trust in the ability of the President- elect (and his inner circle) to distance many of these new-found friends and supporters from the corridors of power. Nigerians sent several messages to the President- elect. But one is clearer than every other message. And that is that we cannot go back to the old ways of doing things. Buhari He talked about change. He invoked the spirit of change. And the people believed him; they bought into his idea. All I am suggesting is for the President-elect to meet with a cross section of everyday Nigerians. That’s all! Sabidde@yahoo.com |

Politics / Fayose ‘salutes’ Buhari, Accepts Poll Results by MrFairplay4ume(m): 4:51pm On Mar 31, 2015 |
Ayo Fayose, governor of Ekiti state and one of the arrowheads of President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential campaign, has saluted Muhammadu Buhari, describing the outcome of the presidential election as the will of God. Fayose famously raised health concerns over Buhari and engaged in an acrimonious media campaign against the retired general. With results of the election showing Buhari taking an unassailable lead on Tuesday afternoon, Fayose issued a statement, saying “the election result is the will of God and Nigerians , and all lovers of peace, progress and development of Nigeria must accept it”. The governor said the election results should not been seen as victory or loss for any political party, adding: “To me, Nigerians and democracy won.” Fayose said: “I salute Nigerians, especially the great people of Ekiti state. “I salute President Jonathan for laying the most solid foundation for democracy in Nigeria. And I salute Major General Buhari for being a resilient and dogged fighter. “I urge Nigerians, irrespective of their ethnic, religious and political affiliation to respect the outcome of the election in the interest of peace, progress and development of the country. “Nigeria as a country is greater than any individual or group and it is my plea that no one should do anything to rock the boat of peace in the country.” Follow us on twitter @thecableng |

Politics / Why Jonathan Should Go Home Azubuike Ishiekwene by MrFairplay4ume(m): 10:37am On Mar 27, 2015 |
It gets to this moment, the moment when lies run their full course and ugly twisted tales are laid bare. It’s the moment of truth. Four years and 10 months after Goodluck Jonathan assumed office as president, it’s time for reckoning. In Jonathan’s early days in office, I remember a conversation I had with someone very close to him, someone who had known him since his days as deputy governor in Bayelsa and who became very close to him when, as vice president, he had oversight of the Bureau for Public Enterprises which oversaw the privatisation process, including the independent power projects. After one of his numerous meetings with Jonathan in those early days in 2010 following the death of President Umaru Yar’Adua, I teased my acquaintance that he had become part of an inner circle preparing Jonathan to stand election in 2011. He said he was sure Jonathan would run, but added that “the man vowed that even if he did – and he’ll do so very reluctantly – he will not stand again for election if the power situation in the country did not improve.” On that, he said, the man was categorical. On September 28, 2010, when Jonathan formally declared his intention to stand election, his second promise from a long list was: “We will fight for all Nigerians to have access to power.” It’s been five years since. You must ask yourself today if Jonathan has kept his word. I’m not talking about a privatisation framework that completely ignored the gas master plan and shared public assets largely among cronies, with little regard for due diligence. I’m not talking about the fraudulent commissioning and re-commissioning of power plants that had been commissioned by former President Olusegun Obasanjo years ago. I’m not talking about lies in newspaper adverts that power generation has reached 5,500MW when, in fact, it is less than 3,700MW as you read this piece. I’m not talking about TAN adverts, which some estimate to have cost over N5billion in dodgy funds. Nor am I talking about a recent memo by Vice President Namadi Sambo to Jonathan asking for at least N42billion to buy meters for consumers, only for the money to be diverted and shared for PDP campaign. I’m just saying you should ask yourself a straightforward question: after five years and billions of naira, do you have more electricity in your home today than you had in 2010? In that same speech by Jonathan, which is available online at http:// www.vanguardngr.com/2010/09/100003/), he said, “We will fight corruption.” In words and in deed, no government has embraced and fed on corruption as generously as has Jonathan’s government. Sometimes, I think he does it without meaning harm. He just does not know how to run a government differently. That’s why even though the Nuhu Ribadu committee found that N2trillion had been stolen in the subsidy scam, Jonathan ended up using the report to prop his armchair. That’s why, twice in public interviews, he has made a distinction between stealing and corruption. That’s why even though serving ministers in his government collected N120billion in backdoor payments for Malabu Oil, he has not lifted a finger. And that’s why his government cannot account for N150billion stolen by thieving pension officials who still enjoy presidential protection. The theft list is formidable and pervasive, but I promise you that not a single one in this column is false or mentioned maliciously. I have, in fact, left out the famous $20billion flagged by Sanusi Lamido Sanusi. That figure will get worse if you tear yourself off Diezani Alison-Madueke’s skirt for a moment and ask what the government has done with $81.3billion received from the sale of 445,000bpd of crude oil allocated to NNPC for almost five years when the price was not less than $100 per barrel. Part of the waste trail has been out there for everyone to see in the last six weeks – in the vile political campaigns and bribes in place of honest effort that should have been invested to govern in the past five years. In 2011, under this same Jonathan who promised to “fight corruption,” 450MHz, a premium spectrum valued at $50million, was sold to an incompetent licensee for $6million and a waiver of N1billion granted by ministers Omobola Johnson and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in a transaction in which the NCC boss had a vested interest. The first leg of the 800MHz was sold for 13million euros in Nigeria – an asset which Germany sold for 1.53billion euros around the same time. If Jonathan was really interested in fighting corruption, he would have had the back of Bashir Gwandu, who not only opposed the NCC bazaar, but blew the whistle on the fraud. But Gwandu was shafted and removed, only for a competent court to overturn his illegal and unjustified removal. And Jonathan wants to come back? This is the moment of truth. In his own words, he promised to “fight to create jobs for all Nigerians.” In his recent campaign promises, he has even promised to create two million jobs every year! Since we can only judge him by his record, figures from the NBS show that his best has been 2.2million jobs in three years. If you believe that a man who could not create more than roughly 730,000 jobs a year will create two million yearly at a time when civil servants are going without salaries because the government is broke, that’s fine. But you cannot claim tomorrow that his promise was counterfeit. I’ve read about the dubious promises of thousands of kilometres of roads and the claims of better education, healthcare and fast trains. These promises were made five years ago and they are being repeated for our enjoyment in colourful newspaper adverts. How can you forget that the longest teachers’ strike in years – five months and three weeks by university teachers – has been under Jonathan? As for healthcare, his own man and secretary of the Centenary committee charity ball, Kingsley Esegbue, said in October 2013 that Nigerians spend N250billion on medical tourism. So where did they spend the money on healthcare? And the fast trains? It’s a lie that has no second part. Security has been a nightmare, with extraordinary incompetence that led to the kidnap of the 279 Chibok girls and the killing of over 12,000 persons including the brutal murder of young school children, before this government outsourced security, its basic function, to mercenaries and neighbouring countries. If Nigeria were a company, the shareholders would have fired Jonathan long ago. But if after nearly five years of incredible incompetence and failed promises you sincerely believe that you must vote him as reward for his poor performance, that’s fine. The die is cast. They are out there as you read hthis piece, sharing bribes amassed from NNPC and deploying force where their bribes cannot reach. I know we have an incredible capacity to quibble and move on, but let this be clear: we cannot escape the consequences of the choice we make tomorrow for another four year. Leadership 1 Like |

Politics / Mu'azu Calls PDP Campaigners To Order Over Hate Speeches by MrFairplay4ume(m): 8:24am On Mar 24, 2015 |
National chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Adamu Mu'azu has assured that he would call "small boys" in his party who have engaged in hate campaigns with the opposition to order ahead of the Saturday's Presidential elections. Mu'azu gave the assurance Monday at the PDP national secretariat, Abuja, when National Peace Committee for 2015 Elections led by retired Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe paid him a courtesy visit. He said with the show of exemplary commitment of the committee, nothing would go wrong before, during and after elections, stressing that all political parties need the committee which he described as the "watch dog" to do what is absolutely required for a very credible, peaceful and transparent election. "I want to assure you, the PDP will be running a very fair campaign led by me. If you watch my utterances personally, you find that there is nothing I do than to be a good resource man or what I should be for my party and for Mr. President; to make people love him and vote for him. "Unfortunately, when the opposition go haywire, some of our small boys in our own party shout back and that is why you have this. But believe me, I give them very serious signal that we don't expect that. That is why it is even the way it is; it would have gone even much worse, because it is absolutely unnecessary to call somebody's product by-product, it is better for you to sell your product and show how better your own is than the other. "We don't have any doubt that President Jonathan has all that we need to sell, therefore we do not need to speak ill about others. But I only want to assure you that we will continue to improve and increase in our caution in the use of our words and negative campaigns in the next few days untill the election day," Mu'azu said. He added: "I assure you that we will sit down with all the gentlemen and ladies that we need to talk to, further, immediately so that there will be no further injuries from our own side" stressing that the PDP campaigns had been issue-based. Earlier, Ebitu Ukiwe who led the committee members on the visit said the visit was to advise PDP to keep to the terms and conditions of the peace accord signed by all the presidential candidates of various political parties in January, adding that the committee members would visit the leadership of all political parties. He advised all parties to ensure that their campaigns are issue-based, stressing that some of the utterances coming up during campaigns do not fit into the peace treaty. Former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar was absent, but Ukiwe explained that some committee members were absent due to various reasons including flight problems. Daily Trust |
Politics / Nigeria 2015: We Have Not Endorsed Jonathan- Miyyetti Allah by MrFairplay4ume(m): 9:37pm On Mar 22, 2015 |
The Miyyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria on Sunday disassociated itself from what it called “a purported endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan”. The National Youth Leader of the group, Adamu Mohammed, reacted to the recent endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan by a group called Miyyetti Allah Kautal Hore led by Abdullahi Bodejo. In a press release issued after an emergency meeting of the cattle breeders association, Mr. Mohammed said the group that endorsed the president was different from theirs. “The Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore led by one Alhaji Abdullahi Bello Bodejo is a cultural organization which exists in only one state of the federation and therefore cannot speak on our behalf on any national issues because they are not representing all Fulani’s in the country. “Therefore, we want to disassociate the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria from the statement credited to the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore that they have endorsed certain political candidates in the forthcoming elections. “MACBAN is not part of the endorsement since we are not a political association, but an organized group whose aim and objectives was to protect the interest of Fulani’s all over the country and beyond. He said the group’s membership includes the Sultan of Sokoto as Grand Patron, as well as the Emir of Kano, Emir of Zazzau, Lamido of Adamawa and Emir of Katsina as members of the Board of Trustees. The official advised all its members to vote on election day in an orderly manner. Premium Times |

Politics / $200 Million Bribe Tears Mua’azu, Deputy Apart by MrFairplay4ume(m): 10:02pm On Mar 16, 2015 |
National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Adamu Mu’azu, popularly called “Game Changer” and his Deputy, Chief Uche Secondus are currently at loggerhead over $200 Million (Two Hundred Million Dollars) bribe from several aspirants seeking the party’s ticket. Mu’azu, the former Governor of Bauchi State, who took over the helms of affairs of the PDP from Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, allegedly collected $200 Million from several aspirants seeking the Party’s ticket and did not share with his Deputy. It was gathered from some aggrieved Aspirants who did not clinch the PDP tickets that Governorship and National Assembly Aspirants paid as much as $10 Million to the Chairman as fees to facilitate the picking of preferred Delegates and electoral officers. The National Chairman allegedly failed to deliver on his promises after pocketing the huge sums. Ndudi Eleumelu, a Governorship Aspirant in Delta State paid a whooping N750 Million and the case ended up with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Sources told Pointblanknews.com that the issue came to the fore when some of the PDP aspirants complained to President Goodluck Jonathan about how they were defrauded having paid huge sums for the PDP ticket and yet could not secure the party’s flag. Irked by the revelations from the Aspirants who recently met with him, the President had summoned the PDP hierarchy. A source told Pointblanknews.com that the President was particularly miffed after he had received a complain from General T.Y Danjuma who had complained that few days before the Governorship Primaries in Taraba State, he had received words that after paying huge sums for his candidate, the National Chairman was making clandestine moves to deny his candidate the ticket. It is not immediately known how much the retired General dolled out for his candidate. But sources told Pointblanknews.com that the amount was huge and that the former Defence Minister had threatened to go to the press. However, at the meeting with the President, sources confirmed that Party officials were shocked that the National Chairman had collected such huge sums without their knowledge. Deputy National Chairman, Chief Secondus was particularly angered that he has severally suffered short-change from the National Chairman and vowed to take a pound of flesh. At the end of the meeting, sources told Pointblanknews.com that the President immediately directed that anyone who had collected money from any aspirants should as a matter of urgency return same. A candidate from Delta State confirmed to Pointblanknews.com that he has since been refunded almost N1Billion he dolled out to the Party hierarchy. It is not known yet if all the Aspirants who paid for tickets have been refunded. Up till the time of going to press, the National Chairman and his Deputy do not speak to each other. According to a source at the Party National Headquarters in Abuja, “It is hard to reconcile both leaders now because of the campaigns now. Perhaps after the campaign, the leadership of the party will meet and reconcile them,” a source privy to the development told Pointblanknews.com. The source added, “that is what has been happening here since 1999. Aspirants always pay. Mu’azu is not the first even if he is removed today; any other person who takes over will do the same. They all collect money. Even Secondus who is complaining today has been collecting.” Efforts to reach both men were not successful as their phones were both. http://pointblanknews.com/pbn/exclusive/200-million-bribe-tears-muaazu-deputy-apart/ |

Muhammadu Buhari on March 28 with their massive votes. Kwankwaso spoke at the Lagos residence of APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu during a meeting with the Lagos Arewa community. The governor reviewed the hate campaign by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), especially by Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose and the dollar sharing in the Southwest by President Goodluck Jonathan to woo voters. Tinubu urged the Hausa community not to be deterred saying “the Arewa community is part of the government in Lagos.” He added: “The Arewa community has come to the reality that we must work for the peace of this country. We are one. We must work together. No Dollar can break us, no Euro can divide us. We had enough of 16 years of lies. They packed our children inside the stadium without food. They made them buy the uniform extorting from them, taking from the poor, we cannot continue that way. “We are ready, at this time, we need change in leadership; we need change in vision. There is no permanent tenant in Aso rock. A villa is a house and any president is a tenant. God has blessed and granted him six years. We have bought him plenty shoes, many jackets. So we cannot give him our vote.” Tinubu charged them to keep their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to vote the APC and benefit more from government. Kwankwaso said Governor Fayose had become a national embarrassment. The governor who lamented the insults to Gen. Buhari’s person wondered what is left of values in the country. He added: “the North will reply them on March 28 in the presidential polls.” Recalling his youth service years in Ogun State in the southwest, Kwankwaso said he had always believed that Yoruba land paraded an array of well- cultured, respectful people like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Ernest Shonekan, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Bashorun MKO Abiola Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, among others, “but anytime I listen to this young man, the governor of Ekiti State, I feel terribly embarrassed as a governor and I feel bad for Yoruba people . This young man, I don’t know what went wrong, I used to know him even though I was not very close to him, of course, when I was first governor, he was not governor . “He became governor after I left the Goverment House in 2003, but these days, when I look at him, I think many things are wrong with his words and even his mouth. “When you see Fayose, tell him he should learn how to respect elders. Even those of us who are governors at this time are his seniors. In this business of politics and in any other business, I think seniority should be respected. “He has been talking about the age of Buhari, I am not a medical doctor but I observed Buhari before the primaries. He went round all the states of the federation and after the primary elections he went to 35 out of 36 states and Kano four times and I am sure he came to Lagos more than once within this short period of time, what I believe is that Buhari is healthier than Jonathan.” Tinubu said he was surprised that the ruling party is afraid of elections. Tinubu who said Kwankwaso is a trusted man added that the Arewa people are part of the Lagos government. He said: “Jonathan is afraid of conducting election. Source:The Nation 1 Like 1 Share |
Politics / Former Speaker Na’abba Quits PDP, Says It Has Lost Soul by MrFairplay4ume(m): 3:59pm On Mar 16, 2015 |
Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Alhaji Ghali Umar Na’Abba has dumped the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), saying the party has lost its soul. He becomes the fifth speaker to dump the PDP. The current Speaker, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal defected to the opposition APC in October. Others before him that dumped the PDP are Aminu Bello Masari, Patricia Etteh, Dimeji Bankole. Na’Abba announced his resignation in a letter dated March 15, entitled “Notification of Resignation from PDP, Its Organs and Committees”, addressed to his ward chairman, Sharada ward Kano Municipal local government area. The letter was also copied to the party’s Chairman Kano Municipal; Chairman Kano State; Vice Chairman North West Zone; National Chairman and the Chairman Board of Trustees (BOT). In his resignation letter, Na’Abba said no administration in the history of Nigeria had used religion and ethnicity to divide Nigerians more than the current administration under Mr. Jonathan. He said: “You will agree with me that such pervasive political behaviour should under no circumstances be tolerated by all who subscribe to decent and conscionable political practice. Nigeria, PDP leadership cabalised He added: “The Country’s and the Party’s leadership have become cabalised to the extent that while Nigerians are aware that they have a President in the person of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, they are at the same time at a loss as to who governs their country. “Both Nigeria and the PDP are left to drift,” he said. “It has left us with the conventional wisdom that people cannot succeed in life unless they are ruthless and unprincipled.” According to him, “It is obvious to me that PDP is both self-destruct and irredeemable.” For Nigerians to secure a new lease of life, he said, they should “get out this inept leadership that has neither allure nor inspiration.” He added: “In its place, Nigerians deserve not just a good President, good governors, and other political office holders, but true and exemplary leaders.” Na’Abba said such leaders must have competence and capacity to govern and a clear vision for the future. The PDP, he noted, “has become characterized by corruption and impunity in the way and manner candidates for elective positions are being selected to the extent that in almost twenty states, crisis has engulfed the Party over the gubernatorial primaries and the manner other candidates for other elective positions emerged.” Na’Abba contended that the PDP and the country’s leadership had failed to consolidate democratic gains for sister African Countries and other transition countries to follow. “Under the current leadership, Nigeria is suffering from loss of esteem, as we are now most often consigned to the back seat of international relations. “Most worrisome is the current anxiety of most Nigerians as the regime wobbles and tumbles toward the oncoming election. “It has today become incontrovertible that cartels and shady characters are becoming visible, important and indispensable factors in Nigeria’s governance. Patriots not respected “It appears those at the helm of affairs are more comfortable with such characters of easy virtue than with patriotic and altruistic Nigerians.” Na’Abba who was speaker between 1999 and 2003 expressed concerns that in Nigeria today the quality of governance was going down by the day even as he said critical National Institutions that unified and wielded Nigerians together had been dragged into politics, contrary to wise counsel and political correctness. “I have relentlessly pushed for reform of the internal policies of the PDP individually and collectively, without success. In fact it is common knowledge that all critical members of the Party have been made irrelevant.” He noted that members of the party who are pliant and who lack principle and who stand for nothing are always more trusted by the leadership to carry out party assignments because they are said to be “loyal.” “Such loyalty,” he said, “is nothing but a euphemism for people who stand for nothing.” Why founding fathers are leaving the PDP He said it pains most of them that majority of the founding fathers that had died like Chief S.M. Afolabi, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar Rimi, Chief Solomon Lar, Professor Osammor, Chief S. B. Awoniyi etc all died as a result of their frustration by and with the Party,” he lamented. However, according to him, even those founding fathers who are still living like Dr. Alex Ekwueme, Malam Adamu Chiroma, Dr Shettima Mustapha, Alhaji Asheikh Jarma Dr, Victor Odili, Mr. Isaac Shaahu and many others “are equally living with such frustration. While others like Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Alhaji Isyaku Ibrahim, Alhaji Musa Gwadabe, two former National Chairmen, Chief Audu Ogbe and Chief Barnabas Gemade etc had since left the Party. The Party and theadministration clearly possess neither compassion nor empathy. “I pray that your mind and those of other Patriots would also be illuminated with truth so that you may also act wisely and accordingly.” Speaking with Daily Trust after releasing his resination later, Ghali said it was necessary for him to leave the PDP because it had lost its soul and the deterioration in the party had become “irredeemable.” The former Speaker said by resigning few weeks to the election, he is sending “signal’ to his supporters and followers all over the country not to cast their votes for the PDP. I may join another party On whether he would join the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), which has been making gains from the gale of defections in the PDP, Na’Abba said “I may join another party in the next few days and I may decide to do so after the election.” He alleged that the PDP had been distributing money to aggrieved party members not to defect to other political parties but that “I was not approached because they know that I can’t be bought over.” The former Speaker said the PDP “has been losing its sons and daughters including so many of its founding fathers and members by the day adding, “I will not stay for the house to fall me.” back to |
Politics / Nigeria Will Waste Another Four Years Whoeverbecomes President, Okey Ndibe Says by MrFairplay4ume(m): 5:35pm On Mar 15, 2015 |
In an exclusive interview with SaharaReporters Okey Ndibe discusses the 2015 presidential elections in Nigeria, and the failure of both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) parties. Professor Ndibe argued that “the APC and PDP represent a kind of Siamese twins, in that they are two parties obsessed with the same idea of dispossessing Nigerian people and looting as being the essence of governance.” He added that, “Nigerian politics and governance arranged around the idea of empowering a few individuals to steal the resources from the rest of us.” If Buhari were to win, Professor Ndibe suspects that Nigerians “are going to realize very quickly that we were sold a dud. I think that Buhari is going to bring with him a legacy of personal restraint, and an absence of interest in obscene material accumulation,” but that his self-restraint would not sanitize the behavior of the APC. Professor Ndibe expressed disappointment that “the progressive elements in Nigeria were unable to coalesce around the idea of finding a viable third [party] alternative, and chose the least attractive parties in Nigeria” to assume leadership roles in the country. “Nigerians know what to expect with Jonathan. They know to expect he is a president that doesn’t give a damn; they know he is a president whose commitment to a transformational agenda is simply lip deep. Jonathan as a president is in over his head and does not understand the principals of good governance,” he told SaharaReporters. He forecasted that “whichever of the two major candidates there will, I suspect, be a great deal of violence…if Buhari wins there will be unsettlement of the Niger Delta, and if Jonathan wins there will be an intensification of violence in the north which may spread.” Professor Ndibe also told SaharaReporters that very little in Nigeria will change fundamentally from the election, citing how Nigerians should “take a hard look” at candidates from other parties. “I think we will waste another four years in which Nigerians are going to return to the same questions of disillusionment and disenchantment with the political process.” He emphasized that, “what Nigeria needs is not a great man, or a man of great moral example, but fundamental restructuring” of its political, economic, and management systems. |
Politics / What Was President Jonathan Thinking? By Sabella Ogbobode Abidde by MrFairplay4ume(m): 7:25pm On Mar 14, 2015 |
From the moment President Goodluck Jonathan knew and or decided he was going to contest the 2015 Presidential Election, he should not have picked a fight with Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and a few other persons and powerhouses. Thinking about it now, I am sure that he regrets it. More than anybody else, Governor Amaechi pulled the roof on the President’s head and in the process preempted the president’s planned victory parade. But really, what was the president and his wife thinking when they picked on a man whose support they needed? Hubris, maybe? Second, what impelled or compelled the president to enter the race this time around? You look and or listen to him and you get the feeling that he is exhausted, frustrated, uninterested and angry. He was a deputy governor, a governor, a vice president and then acting president before becoming the president in his own right. That should have been enough for him. Or for anyone else in his position. Really, it should have been. After all, 1999-2015 is a long time to shoulder the weight of a people. Damn, what was he thinking? Insatiable greed, perhaps? Even so, if President Jonathan had done what he was supposed to do, he wouldn’t be in the shape and corner he is right now – gasping for oxygen and for electoral survival. But look at him now, he is everywhere begging, begging and begging and in the process have become the nation’s laughing stock. He was in Jerusalem. He was in Oyedepo's Winners' Chapel. He was in Adeboye's Redeemed Church. He was in Lazarus' Charismatic Church. He has also consorted with TB Joshua. He has been in so many Churches and other places of religious and spiritual significance many of us have lost count. In his desperation, he is bowing and kneeling before everybody and everything! And then he shows up at the Ooni palace (in Ile Ife) looking subdued and as if in a trance. What is he looking for? Power? Power at all cost; power no matter what it takes? Some voices in the social media have begun linking him with the Ogboni society. This is sad, so very sad and pitiful! In the last couple of years, we’ve seen many sickening and un-presidential pictures. What are we going to see next? Are we going to see pictures of initiations? A president pledging his kidney, pledging his liver, pledging his soul -- just so he could remain in office beyond 2015? There is a limit – there has to be a limit to what a man can and should do in search of power. Does he have loved one? He should be called to order. One of the saddest and most unfortunate things about President Jonathan is that he doesn’t hold anyone or institution responsible for willful transgressions. Clearly, he seems incapable of penalizing anybody. His aides, it seems, have come to realize this fact and so they commit offenses knowing they can and will get away with it. Take the most recent embarrassing situation for instance: someone or a group of people at the foreign affairs ministry or so made him look small, very small before the Moroccans and the international community. Yet, the President has only promised to “look into it.” Oh no! When you embarrass your president (at this level), heads must roll. At the very least, get the foreign affairs minister to cane and can the offenders. There should be accountability: people should be held accountable for their actions and inactions (especially when such egregiousness diminishes the prestige and reputation of the President and or his office). If you have a basic understanding of politics, one of the things you never want to do is surround yourself with mediocre minds and mediocre intellects. But more than that, you never want to surround yourself with people who are (a) afraid to tell you the truth: (b) afraid to disagree with you; and (c) afraid to walk away if and when their advices are constantly discounted. But on the other hand, we don’t always give our best effort or best advice simply because we don’t want to be jobless; don’t want to give up the perks and trappings of the office; or because we came into office insincere about our intentions. In essence, we are there, not for the good of the collective or the nation, but for the good of ourselves. This Jonathan should have known. A leader may be a danger unto himself if he cannot sift the grains from the sands; if he cannot tell the difference between praise-singers and honest critics. He does himself no good if he allows superficial noises to cloud his mind and his sense of self and understanding of people and ideas. This is a problem that’s peculiar to many Africa rulers. In Jonathan, it is prominent. And he rarely acts like a leader. When the presidential election (slated for February 14, 2015) was postponed, he didn’t think it necessary to address the nation, to explain why the election had to be postponed. But instead, he kept shifting blame and responsibility to others even though he is the nation’s chief executive officer. In essence, he failed to provide leadership. He was silent for a number of days – forgetting that he is the leader of our republic. There is something comforting about showing leadership, direction, taking responsibility and allaying the people’s fear and doubt. In times of moral, political, economic or social crisis, leaders step up to the podium. They take charge. They lead. This singular act engenders and promotes trust and confidence and respect. Jonathan didn’t seem to know or understand this singularity. Or, maybe he just didn’t care! One of the many tragedies of the Goodluck Jonathan narrative is that too many of his friends and advisers are/were not sincere. They lied to him. They betrayed him. They used him. And now, like a broke piece of tumbler, they are about to toss him away. He is being betrayed left, right and center. Another tragedy is this: the vast majority of those who drank from his cup and ate from his palm, shied away from defending him. They shied away from going to bat for him. And many of those who defend him do so because of inducements -- and not because of love, respect or loyalty. History has shown that electoral outcomes can be unpredictable. Very unpredictable! Two weeks is a long time when it comes to elections. And that’s long enough for Jonathan to close the gap and come up with a Hail Mary. But I doubt it. Experts at reading tea leaves tell me that the majority of voters will vote for Change – as opposed to Continuity. I am happy with that. Politics / Leadership And Faith For Unity, Not Division, Bygeneral Muhammadu Buhari by MrFairplay4ume(m): 8:34pm On Mar 13, 2015 |
I greet you all with gladness and delight to be amongst you in this engagement; there is no doubt in our hearts that this gathering is a good one to help us re-establish the goodness in being in each others’ company. It is also not a secret, especially due to the forthcoming elections, that some groups are being tagged as religiously intolerant of the other; I hope that this gathering will help quell such unfair sentiments. As our nation approaches, perhaps, the most crucial election in our history, all true patriots are called to deeper reflection of the basic ingredients that bind the nation together — these being our common freedom, peace and unity. This reflection is even more relevant in the face of the illegal postponement of the general elections — a feat achieved through various sinister ploys and with the sole aim of avoiding the will and verdict of the people. In all these, I feel the urge to communicate my personal vision and thoughts to the people of our great nation, especially on the question of religion, a sensitive matter for many citizens that has become the most frequently used tool by the ruling party. I must add that no one is exempted from overzealousness where faith is concerned – just as the Christians believe so much in their cause, so also do the Muslims, as well as other religions in our country. However, those who deliberately disseminate divisive disinformation and attempt to stoke primordial sentiments using religion or ethnicity and create fear in the minds of people fail the standard of patriotism that this nation demands of them and deserves from them. There are talks today about the fear of Islamisation or Christianisation of the Nigerian state by my running mate and I, or by our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), which is absolutely impossible considering that the Nigerian Constitution is clearly against elevating any religion to a state religion. That said, our religion or faith is expected to guide us, such that the good that we do transcend into good living conditions and to make life more abundant in our communities, states and the country at large. It seems though, that the exact tenets of our beliefs have been abandoned, but often revisited only for self-gratification. I would like to solemnly declare that in spite of what our detractors say, I am not a religious fanatic of any sort and I have never been. In all my life I have never supported extremism of any kind, and nowhere in my record of service to our nation can this false toga, which political traducers have tried so hard to put on me, be substantiated. Indeed, it is very unfortunate and I feel extremely sad that I have to give this type of assurance at this time in our national life. Let me reiterate that I, Muhammadu Buhari, have come as an individual to serve and not to dictate, and that as a President – if given the opportunity – I nurture no ambition to Islamise the country, neither is my running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo nursing any ulterior agenda to Christianise the country. Please be clear that no member of our team puts one religion above the other or one interest above another. My background is in the army, and there is no doubt that the military is one of the most integrated pan-Nigerian institutions. And even today, the military is one of the few national institutions that represent the pride of our nation’s possibilities in unity. Soldiers from every nook and cranny of this country come together, work and live together, entrust their lives to each other and integrate their families. It is a military where many of my dearest friends, from all faiths and parts of the country, lost their lives defending the unity of our nation. That was the military I served in, and in the Nigeria military that I know and can speak of, it was impossible to be a bigot. Just as it will be considered favouritism when someone is favoured based on his affiliations even when he is less worthy of the favour, so also is the graveness of favouritism when religious sentiments is brought into a democracy or into a highly sensitive issue as choosing the leader of an entire country. In our Qur’an and Bible, we were never told that leaders were chosen because they were Jewish or Israelites, but because they have what it takes to liberate the people of God; because they have what it takes to make the people realise the intended goods and potentials for the growth and benefit of the society. In most sincerity of heart, I urge you all to have a discerning mind; double check any individual who speaks about another person in ways derogatory to the dignity of a human being — surely, our faiths preach against back-biters and gossips. I enjoin all of us to exhibit the virtue of tolerance; tolerance because where your strength gives way is where the strength of the other person begins — that strength is what you both need to forge ahead and it is the collective strength that we need as a people to build our nation. Tolerance because the supporters of Shari’a are protecting their customs as the Shari’a law is synonymous with customary laws, covering customs of marriage, divorce and inheritance which cannot be forced on people who do not subscribe to it, but expecting understanding from them in appreciation of their customs. This tolerance should guide us because even in the south of Nigeria where there are no laws like the Shari’a, we still experience some level of lawlessness and jungle justice and in-human treatments. So it is not about the law; it is simply that we have lost the sense of dignity that should be accrued to the human person; we now only see religion, tribe, place of origin and so on when we look at our neighbours. If we know the sacredness of the positions of leadership, we would wish only those after our hearts to assume such positions; those who have won hearts because of the genuineness of their intentions and deeds; those who will be quick to rise to your defence rather than deny the attack or ask for proof of attack. I expect leaders to treat this position like a religion; knowing that they have been put there in trust that they will manage affairs well and make sure that no member of any community is neglected. Truth be told, any leader who continues to show signs of increased wealth while the people cry of hunger, has not been true to his faith. Nations around the world are envious of our diversity. They covet the strength in our diversity, we should focus on having a leader who stands as a rallying point around whom people can gather; one who will mend fences and build bridges, so that when called to give account of stewardship, he can boldly say, “not one of the people you have given me have I lost in the course of our journey.” Leadership is not a one-man show, so we have to work together; we must come together, putting religious sentiments aside and rising above the vicious lies of the propagandists; seeing those negative comments as nothing but wicked minds trying to incite same wickedness in the generality of people. I daresay that the prospects of elections are heated in themselves all over the world, so we do a great injustice to ourselves if we begin to insult the things that we hold dear and believe in. I believe I am speaking the minds of most if I say that Nigeria and Nigerians are tired of the hopeless state and the hopelessness our country has been plunged into. We want to have faith in our leaders; as we do in our religion, a faith that will help us recognise the strength in our diversity and in the long run, unite us as a nation. God bless Nigeria as we struggle again to build a united Nigeria in faith, service and good works. Thank you. General Muhammadu Buahri, GCFR, delivered this address at an inter-faith engagement at Hamdala Hotel, Kaduna on Wednesday 10th March, 2015ij |

Almajiri Writes Letter to First Lady Patience Jonathan D ear Madam First Lady: I Lack The Patience To Wait For Good Luck! I am almajiri because I am from the North and one of the products of the Polygamous family, if you “hate” me, you don’t have to wait to a moment that your husband needs my vote before you come with your pretense. I knew long ago that the killings in my region were allowed to be because, you don’t like my face. So, hold it, you don’t have to tell anyone to “stone” me because of my political party affiliation, you can use the soldiers to continue to kill me when they come to polling units, on the basis that “Nigeria’s economy is in your pocket”. You are intoxicated not from the amount of beer your husband drinks, but for the power that you are enjoying. Painfully, for all your utterances recently, you have killed your husband politically. Politics / No Leader Can Islamize Or Christianize Nigeria, Buhari Tells Mbeki by MrFairplay4ume(m): 8:34pm On Mar 10, 2015 |
A n inside source has told SaharaReporters that religion was one of the key issues touched on in a closed-door meeting between the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari, and former South African president, Thabo Mbeki. The two met today in Kaduna, but the subject of their meeting and its outcome were not officially disclosed. But a source told SaharaReporters that Mr. Buhari assured the visiting South African leader of his commitment to peace and issue-based campaigns, and stated that no Nigerian president can Islamize or Christianize the country. “Buhari told Thabo Mbeki that those playing the religious card were engaged in mischievous propaganda to blind Nigerians from demanding for credible leadership,” said our source. The source added that the APC presidential candidate told Mr. Mbeki that the manipulation of religion was dangerous, adding that it limited some citizens’ ability to understand the need to salvage Nigeria. “He also told Mbeki that religious manipulation helps corruption to continue to thrive with impunity,” said our source. “Buhari described the issue of corruption and playing propaganda with religion as some of the greatest threats to Nigeria's future and survival as a united country,” the source added. Nigeria’s last military Head of State, Abdulsalam Abubakar, attended the Buhari-Mbeki meeting. Our source added that Mr. Abubakar, a retired army general, had facilitated Mr. Mbeki’s visit to Nigeria. The former South African president also held a closed-door meeting yesterday with President Goodluck Jonathan and Mr. Abubakar. “Buhari made it clear that there is no president that can Islamize or Christianize Nigeria,” our source continued. “He told Mbeki that there was intense manipulation of religion to present him in a bad light, but he declared the plan a failure. He argued that those behind the plan are determined to retard Nigeria’s progress and sense of unity.” According to the source, the APC candidate also assured Mr. Mbeki that, as a military officer who fought Nigeria’s civil war to preserve the country, he would dedicate himself to the peace and political stability of the country. “He also told Mbeki that his ambition is to ensure that Nigerians, irrespective of their religion, ethnicity or state of origin, find a meaningful life and receive maximum protection from government against any kinds of terror bedeviling the country. The source said that Mr. Buhari told Mr. Mbeki that he would continue to ignore personal attacks on his person and his family, that he would eschew political mudslinging, and focus instead on the issues confronting all Nigerians. saharareporters.com/2015/03/10/no-leader-can-islamize-or-christianize-nigeria-buhari-tells-mbeki |
