PoliticsFFK Damands N6b & Apology For Defamation Of Character From Daily Trust by MRLfoods(op): 5:50pm On Sep 01, 2020
A Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has demanded that the management of Media Trust Limited – publishers of Daily Trust and other publications – enter into a negotiation with him for possible settlement of N6bn for defamation of character.

Fani-Kayode said this in a letter addressed to the Managing Director of Daily Trust, dated August 31, 2020 and titled, ‘Defamation of the character of Chief Femi Fani-Kayode by Iliyasu Gadu.’

The letter, which was signed by the former minister’s lawyer, Adeola Adesipe, was in response to an article titled, ‘FFK, the Drug Addled Thug in Designer Wears’ dated August 30, 2020 and published by the medium.

In the article, which was published in the newspaper, the writer lambasted Fani-Kayode for his conduct during a Press conference in which he described a Daily Trust reporter in Calabar, Eyo Charles, as ‘stupid’ after the journalist asked question about the identity of persons “bankrolling” his current tour of southern states.

Gadu, the writer of the article, claimed that Fani-Kayode, who attended Cambridge University, was once “a drug addict” and had sought rehabilitation in Ghana, but “till today has not been cured of the habit.”

In his pre-litigation letter, however, Fani-Kayode described the article as libelous and demanded an apology from the newspaper, which must be published in other national dailies.

The former minister also demanded that negotiation be entered into for possible payment of N6bn due to the irreparable loss the article had caused him.

It reads in part, “Be aware that our client has not only suffered immeasurable loss of goodwill, he is currently confronted with unbearable opprobrium by his fans, followers and colleagues across the globe.

“Our client is alive to his rights both in law and equity but is disposed to an opportunity to undo the evil you have done by retracting the said insalubrious remarks on the same platform it was published and apologising to him in two other national dailies.

“You are also advised to enter into negotiations with us for the sum of N6bn being a token amount for penitence as opposed to the magnitude of infraction caused to our client’s nobility.”

The newspaper was given 14 days to comply or face legal action.

Fani-Kayode also wrote a similar letter to Gadu, who authored the article.

The former minister drew the ire of several Nigerians recently after a viral video showed him talking down at a journalist, an incident he has apologised for.

However, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, as well as many other civil organisations, have continued to criticise Fani-Kayode, while many reporters have boycotted his ongoing tour of the southern states.

PoliticsHas The Hunter Truly Become The Hunted? - Sanya Anjorin by MRLfoods(op): 4:17pm On Aug 12, 2020
In Nigeria, the Economic and Financial Crime Commission is the agency responsible for thundering through economic crimes perpetrators and hunting down money launderers like a deer. The economic crimes detail includes investigation of cases involving money laundering, checking forgery, checking washing, counterfeit checks, non-sufficient fund checks, counterfeit credit cards, fraudulent use of credit cards, fraudulently possession of credit cards and such likes.

The agency was established in 2003 in some measure, the pressure from the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering which mentioned Nigeria as one of the 23 countries which hampered the international community’s efforts to fight money laundering. It was one of the most commendable agencies created by the former President Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

Since then, the EFCC has fought corruption and partners several agencies like the FBI, Metropolitan Police, German Police, Canadian Police, USAID, DFID, the World Bank, among others. The cooperation of bilateral partners and foreign donors such as the European Union also aided the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

Corruption has turned a healthy economy into a pale one as public office holders milked the system to deny millions of Nigerians access to the most basic health and education services.

It is worrisome that the fight against crimes in Nigeria has turned to a cyclical pattern of great and poor performance; when it seems she’s making progress in the fight against corruption, the demon practically fights back and dents the image of the nation like a punched car.

On President Muhammadu Buhari fighting corruption, Professor Lumumba, a former director of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, said, ‘No matter how good your idea is, it must be sold to others and they must buy into it. That is how you institutionalise the idea. You cannot be a lone warrior in this matter because the children of darkness hunt like a pack of wolves and they will devour you if you are alone.”

The twinkling in the sun danced on the surface of the water forming a ripple in the people’s eyes. In other words, they were speechless when they learnt the suspended acting EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu, was being investigated for alleged financial misconduct

“When people have power in their hands, they feel that they are lords into themselves and wield power arbitrarily but when the table turns against them, they feel that the hunter has become the hunted,” an anonymous photographer and Public Relations expert in Ikeja, Lagos observed.

But a question remains: has the hunter become the hunted truly?

The Sun was setting yet the sky to the west was streaked with red and orange, that Monday, July 6, 2020 when Magu was detained to answer various cases of official misconduct and financial irregularities levelled against him.

Allegations were made by the Attorney General of the federation and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, who demanded the removal of the erstwhile acting Chairman of the EFCC in a memo to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). One of the allegations was to account for the sum of N700 million meant for training of the commission’s operatives. The training, it was gathered, was not held. Also, springs of information further revealed that 332 seized properties worth billions of naira were internationally concealed by planners to cover up more findings.

PoliticsEdo Guber 2020: Tinubu Behind EDHA Crisis - Dan Orbih by MRLfoods(op): 5:25pm On Aug 08, 2020
The National Vice Chairman, South-South, of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dan Orbih, says All Progressives Congress chieftain, Bola Tinubu, is behind the political instability rocking the Edo State House of Assembly.

The chairman, Edo Campaign Council, who was a former PDP chairman in the state, said the people of the state would resist any interference from the former Lagos State governor.

Orbih said this at a Press conference on Saturday in response to allegations made by Tinubu against the PDP candidate in the September 19 election, Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The governorship election is about five weeks away, but the political climate in the state is heating up, with the players engaging in verbal attacks.

Obaseki, who is seeking reelection, will face APC candidate, Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

Ize-Iyamu also has the backings of the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and Tinubu.

In a statement on Friday, Tinubu said Obaseki committed an impeachable offence by ordering the renovation of the Edo State House of Assembly at such a time as this.

“Although Governor Obaseki’s conduct in the past year is, undoubtedly impeachable, these legislators have made no threat to impeach the governor.

“Their only desire is to peacefully perform the duties asked of them by the constituents who elected them,” Tinubu’s statement partly read.

But Orbih warned Tinubu to desist from interfering in Edo politics.

During the live address on Saturday afternoon monitored by our Correspondent via the PDP social media handles, Orbih accused Tinubu of being a dictator, saying, “I also want to state here that his style of politics in the South-West is not attractive to Edo people.

“It doesn’t make any sense for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to sit down in the comfort of his home, drawing up grounds for impeachment for the elected governor of Edo State.

“Reading through his statement, I have come to the conclusion that certainly, he is not aware of the issues concerning the unfortunate incident at the state House of Assembly.

“I should expect, as a former governor of Lagos State, he should know better.

“You will recall that at some point during the tenure of Adams Oshiomhole when he was carrying out renovation at the state House of Assembly Complex, the House, after a resolution, relocated to the Old Legislative building at the Government House.

“Of course, if you go round the state, you will observe that the governor has been carrying out renovation works in most of the abandoned buildings.

“In the judiciary, he has done same. Some of the courts were relocated to temporary sites. He has also done same in several other government institutions.

“We can see the external interest in what is going on in Edo State.

“Asiwaju Bola Tinubu did not condemn Adams Oshiomhole when he renovated the state Assembly just as Godwin Obaseki has done now. But he is quick to jump at telling Edo people that what the governor has done amounts to impeachable offences.

“But let me make it clear here that it is now obvious to Edo people that what is going on at the state House of Assembly is influenced by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

“I want to also say here that Edo State is not Lagos. We’ve been informed that he has since drawn up a list of commissioners that has been handed over to their APC candidate made up of those who are not even from Edo State because that is his style. He has done it in Lagos, he has done it in several other South-Western states.

“Asiwaju cannot draw the political terrain of Edo State with the influence of Adams Oshiomhole and his preferred candidate. Edo people should be allowed to decide their own political destiny.

“We will resist any attempt by those whose style of politics is to influence what happens in states that they don’t come from, influence appointments there and they influence who gets anything in those states.

“Certainly, Edo is not Lagos and we will not allow anybody to dictate to us.”

BusinessZuckerberg $100B Worth: Staffs To Get $1,000 Each For Home-office Needs by MRLfoods(op): 5:07pm On Aug 07, 2020
Mark Zuckerberg has seen his personal wealth hit $100 billion (£76 billion), 16 years after he co-founded Facebook from his university dorm room.

He joins Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Microsoft’s Bill Gates in the “Centibillionaire Club”.

The latest boost to Zuckerberg’s wealth came after Facebook launched a new short-form video feature on Wednesday, SkyNews reports.

Instagram Reels is a rival to Chinese app TikTok and it prompted Facebook shares to jump more than 6 per cent on Thursday, having risen by almost 30 per cent this year.

Mr Zuckerberg owns 13 per cent of Facebook and the social media platform owns Instagram.

The 36-year-old’s personal wealth has gained about $22bn (£16.8 billion) this year, while Mr Bezos’s has grown by more than $75bn (£57 billion), according to Bloomberg.

The news comes after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning US transactions with ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns the video-sharing app TikTok.

The order, which will come into effect in 45 days, comes after his administration warned it was stepping up efforts to purge “untrusted” Chinese apps.

Tencent, which owns the WeChat app, is being targeted with similar measures.

Meanwhile, Facebook told employees on Thursday that they could work from home until July next year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

They will also be given $1,000 (£764) for home office needs.

Twitter and Google have made similar promises to employees in recent weeks.

PoliticsJust In: Women Leads Protest At Edo Assembly Over Okiye's Removal by MRLfoods(op): 3:34pm On Aug 07, 2020
Several protesters in the women’s wing of the Peoples Democratic Party on Friday embarked on a solidarity march to the Edo State House of Assembly in Benin City.

The women, who walked from the Government House along Osadebey Avenue to the Anthony Enahoro Complex, along Ring Road, said they were in solidarity with the embattled Speaker of the House, Mr Frank Okiye.

Okiye was reportedly impeached on Thursday by 17 out of the 24 lawmakers at a private residence in Benin, and in his stead, a new Speaker, Mr Victor Edoror, was elected.

A section of the women, who claimed to be spiritualists, laid curses at the Assembly gate.

They condemned the reported impeachment of Okiye by the 17 lawmakers.
