Video: Window Seat Erykah Badu, went nude for her 2010 soul ballad “Window Seat .” In the video the neo-soul singer is seen walking down the street while disrobing in Dealey Plaza in Texas, the site of president John F. Kennedy’s assassination. At the end of the video Badu is apparently shot in the head by an unknown shooter just after removing her underwear, possibly attempting to mirror Kennedy’s killing. As her body lay on the ground blue paint spills from her head, forming the word “Groupthink” as the singer narrates a poetic voiceover. The video was inevitably subject to much controversy and Badu was charged with disorderly conduct for public nudity, was forced to pay a $500 fine, and served 6 months of probation.

Video: What’s My Age Again? Punk band Blink-182 took to the streets of LA in the video for their 1999 single “What’s My Age Again?” only… without clothes. The entirety of the video depicts the band streaking through the city, much to the shock and humor of most of the neighborhood. In reality, they were actually wearing skin colored underwear for the majority of the video but the shock value is pretty much still there, regardless.

Video: So What The always-edgy Pink sought to make a statement in the video for her 2008 hit “So What .” The song is inspired by the breakdown of her marriage to Carey Hart and the video features a drunk and angry Pink acting out in various situations. In the middle of the video, she strips down to her birthday suit on the red carpet in front of the paparazzi and starts doing playful choreography. Censor bars present, of course.

Video: Womanizer With her first No.1 hit since 1999’s “Baby One More Time,” Britney Spears blazed through the charts with her hot single “Womanizer” in 2008. Things got pretty hot in the video too, as an unclothed Spears can be seen lying down in a sauna throughout the video, using her hands and legs to cover her lady parts. She eventually stripped down again in 2011 for the music video for her single “Criminal.”
|
Video: Bad Romance At this point, Lady Gaga’s provocative antics aren’t really shocking. Nudity in particular shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. Gaga first went nude for her 2009 music video for “Bad Romance .” Then she did again for “LoveGame” that same year… and again for “Telephone” in 2010, and “Marry the Night” a year later.. and… you get the point.
|
Video: Down for Whatever Kelly Rowland stripped down to nothing but a pair of shoes for her 2011 song electro-pop tune “Down For Whatever .” At various points of the video she’s standing on a platform in heels and nothing else, but thanks to clever lighting and camera effects, you can’t see the full monty.
|
Video: Stay Rihanna, while no stranger to being raunchy in her performances and videos, surprisingly took a much more tasteful route when she decided to bare it all in the video for her 2013 ballad “Stay,” featuring Mikky Ekko . The singer is shown lying in a bathtub full of water throughout the entire piece, obviously unclothed but not in a provocative manner. The video is poignant and dramatic, a refreshing departure for the typically hyper-sexualized star. She also went bare for her colossal number one hit “Umbrella” in 2007, but her body was coated in silver paint and cleverly positioned to cover herself.
|
Video: California Gurls Colorful pop sensation Katy Perry decided to take a trip to Candyland for her 2010 chart-topping hit “California Gurls,” but this isn’t the Candyland from your childhood. A carefree Katy is seen in the video lying on her stomach sans clothes atop a cloud of cotton candy with nothing but a bit of pink fluff covering her bare bottom and chest.

Miley Cyrus sparked a firestorm of controversy when she appeared nude while riding an oversized wrecking ball in the video for her single “Wrecking Ball,” but many forget that artists stripping down for their music videos isn’t a new occurrence. Many have come before young Miley and many will come after… not that we’re condoning such actions. We’re just amazed at the level of confidence these folks have with their bodies. That’s gotta stand for something, right? Miley’s been living the wild life lately, particularly after her twerk-filled performance at the 2013 VMAs. Shortly after the controversial on-stage romp, the soon-to-be 21-year-old decided to strip down for the music video to her single “Wrecking Ball” released in September . During the video she’s seen swinging around unclothed riding on well…a wrecking ball while singing. It wasn’t the first time she was seen in shocking attire (or lack thereof), and likely won’t be the last.

Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, on Wednesday alleged that the Boko Haram insurgency plaguing the nation was a creation of friends of former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu. He claimed that those friends had vowed to make Nigeria ungovernable for President Goodluck Jonathan. Obanikoro, who was reacting via his twitter handle to a statement credited to Tinubu accusing him (Obanikoro) of concentrating more on politics than insecurity, stressed that such allegation against him was rather unfortunate. Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressves Congress (APC), had alleged in the statement that Obanikoro had spent more time in Ekiti than Chibok, where over 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped by Boko Haram insurgents in April. According to Tinubu, the action of Obanikoro not only amounted to irresponsible democratic governance, but also a hoax. But Obanikoro reacted angrily to Tinubu’s allegation, saying it was evident that Tinubu was only attacking him for political reasons and not on democratic ideals. “The Boko Haram mess we are dealing with was created by Tinubu’s friends who promised to make Nigeria ungovernable for this government. “Tinubu and politicians like him should devote their time and efforts towards supporting the government in fighting Boko Haram. “I hope Tinubu knows that attacking Obanikoro over Ekiti is crying over spilt milk. We have bigger issues to deal with as a nation,” Obanikoro stated. The minister added that “the government was battling with the security mess created by Tinubu’s friends”, warning that Tinubu and his friends should rather support the government in fighting Boko Haram or hold their peace. |
Nigeria’s Ministry of Defence said more than 100 Islamist militants were killed in raids on two camps following a bomb attack that claimed the lives of 21 people at a shopping center in Abuja, the capital. Security forces raided a camp near the Niger border and another in the northeastern state of Borno, killing 50 militants in each location, the ministry said in an e-mailed statement late yesterday. Two members of the Multinational Joint Task Force, which includes troops from Nigeria and neighboring Niger and Chad, were killed, it said. The June 25 blast in Abuja injured 52 people, the National Emergency Management Agency said. It was the third bombing this year in the capital of Africa’s biggest oil producer. While no group has claimed responsibility, the Islamist group Boko Haram killed at least 75 people in an explosion in an Abuja suburb on April 14. The same day the militants kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls in Borno state. “The recent attacks, together with the kidnapping of over 200 schoolgirls, have raised Boko Haram for ordinary Nigerians from a distant, contained threat to something more tangible, politically relevant and potentially threatening,” Philippe de Pontet, Africa director at New York-based Eurasia Group, said in e- mailed comments yesterday. Suspect Shot The Ministry of Defence said yesterday that more explosives were found in a bag dropped by one of the attackers, who was shot dead while fleeing. The bombing occurred in Abuja’s Wuse 2 district, popular with wealthy Nigerians and foreigners. A week before the bombing, government spokesman Mike Omeri said intelligence reports indicated militants planned to hijack gasoline trucks and use them to carry improvised explosives to the capital. Boko Haram, which means “western education is a sin” in the Hausa language, has focused its five-year insurgency on the north and the capital, hundreds of miles from the coastal oil and gas fields and the southern commercial capital, Lagos. Nigeria attracted a record $21.3 billion in foreign direct investment last year, according to the national statistics agency. The militants drew international outrage when they kidnapped the schoolgirls from the town of Chibok in Borno state. Most of the girls are still missing, and countries including the U.S. and U.K. are aiding the search and rescue effort. Election Campaign Nigeria, a country of 170 million people with Africa’s biggest economy, is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominately Christian south. President Goodluck Jonathan has said Boko Haram is part of al-Qaeda and poses a threat to countries throughout the region. Jonathan cut short his visit to Equatorial Guinea for an African Union meeting to return to Abuja yesterday, his spokesman Reuben Abati said in a text message. His administration has enforced emergency rule in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, the three states where Boko Haram is most active, since May 2013. Jonathan hasn’t said if he will seek re-election in February. “The Jonathan administration will scale up security spending to counter Boko Haram, and spread military patronage,” said Eurasia’s de Pontet. “National security is now the dominant campaign issue, with corruption and power now secondary matters.” |

Two weeks after the Academic Staff Union of Universities suspended its strike, lecturers in the Colleges of Education are set to begin a nationwide strike on Tuesday. This was stated in a letter served on the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike and a copy obtained by our correspondent in Abuja. The letter was delivered by the General Secretary of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, Mr. Nuhu Ogirima, who lamented that the Federal Government had failed to address issues raised by the union. The union’s complaints are infrastructural decay, poor funding, non-implementation of the 2010 FG-COEASU Agreement, poor conditions of service, brain drain and illegal imposition of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System. In the letter signed by the COEASU National President, Asagha Nkoro and Ogirima, the union accused the government of directing the National Commission for Colleges of Education to impose the IPPIS on colleges without recourse to earlier meetings by parties. It said, “While government held series of talks with the union leadership between September and December 2013, evidence abound that government does not wish to keep her side of the bargain in meeting the understanding reached at such meetings. “This, without equivocation, is unacceptable to our union given the peculiar high nuisance and volatile nature of the colleges of education sector. “More so, but for the constitution and inauguration of the Needs Assessment Committee, government merely paid lip services to all other issues, highlighted in our earlier correspondences”. COEASU complained about discrimination against lecturers in colleges of education which includes refusal to fund the Peculiar and Responsibility Allowances as obtainable in Earned Allowances of the universities; refusal to implement the migration of lower cadres as obtainable in polytechnics; and non-accreditation of programmes of the colleges of education among others. In compliance with the resolution of its Expanded National Executive Council Meeting, COEASU said its members had been directed to resume a full scale strike action suspended earlier this year, “unless and until government meets the demands”. In an interview with our correspondent, Ogirima said the union embarked on the strike due to the attitude of the government. He said, “You would recall that we observed a week warning strike earlier this year and the Federal Government called us for talks. Sadly, but for the NEEDS Assessment Committee which government inaugurated, all other issues remain unattended in spite of the over six (6) months of dialogue. “We, therefore, have no alternative but to embark on the strike action since this appears to be the only language gov’t understands.” When contacted, Wike’s Special Assistant (Media), Simeon Nwakaudu promised to address the issues raised by the lecturers today. :-XTwo weeks after the Academic Staff Union of Universities suspended its strike, lecturers in the Colleges of Education are set to begin a nationwide strike on Tuesday. The Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, has vowed to report vice-chancellors of universities running illegal and non accredited courses to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission for prosecution. He said this on Monday at a press briefing in Abuja. Besides, he noted that intellectual decay had set into the university system due to politics of appointment of heads of departments and the effect of the just-suspended strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, which made lecturers to stay off duty for almost six months. He said, “We (NUC) are amazed about the number of vice-chancellors that visit ICPC everyday. “All these unapproved courses that some universities are running, the vice-chancellors are in trouble because ICPC and NUC are not going to take it. We have to address the issue – including misapplication of fund for projects.” Describing the situation as “academic corruption”, Okojie said the commission had started sensitising universities on what constitutes violation of law with a pilot study already ongoing in a few universities. “ There is what we call academic corruption. If you employ students that are not supposed to be in the system, it is corruption,” he added. Okojie said NUC would provide information on universities running illegal courses to the ICPC. The NUC boss recalled that seven Nigerian universities were among the 15 that won the regional competition for African Centres of Excellence. He said an additional three had been included in the list of winners to increase it to 10 from Nigeria that will get $8 million grant each. |
The best graduating student of Crawford University, Igbesa, Ogun State, Oluwatimilehin Sotubo, speaks to SAMUEL AWOYINFA on his road to success The best graduating student of the Crawford University in the 2012/2013 convocation, Oluwatimilehin Sotubo, did not initially set out to study Economics. In fact, he had done two years as a medical student at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye, before he took another Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, and secured admission to study Economics at Crawford. Sotubo says he got fascinated to medicine because his father, Olukunle (now late), and elder brother, Tomiwa, were doctors. But after two years, he found out that he had no passion for it. He says, “I was admitted in 2007 to study Medicine, but we resumed in 2008. I enrolled as a medical student because my dad and elder brother were doctors. I did very well in all my courses, but along the line, I discovered that I really did not have passion for Medicine. “After a close monitoring of my dad’s schedule, I realised that the profession was too demanding. So I quit in 2009. I had to sit the UTME and applied to read Economics at the Crawford University and I passed.” Beaming with smile, slim-built Sotubo adds that he has no regret for a change of course of study and university. “No regret whatsoever. I believe as an economist, I can still save lives, through sound economic policies that will lead to creation of employment and development of the country,” he says. For him to earn the best graduating student status, he notes that prayer, hard work and focus were three ingredients that led to his recording the feat. He adds, “First, I did not joke with my studies. Again, I prayed before and after writing any of the examinations. “I believe in the power of focus and hardwork. These attributes really helped me in becoming the best graduating student.” For Sotubo, who beat 287 other students, scoring a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.91 out of 5 CGPA, it was no surprise that he was the cynosure of all eyes during the school’s fifth convocation last Wednesday. Indeed, the 21-year-old received eight of the academic prizes rolled out by the university. They include the Chief Ernest Shonekan’s Prize for the most Outstanding Behaviour; Prof. Peter Okebukola’s Prize for the Best overall Graduating Student; Remi Olowude’s Prize for the Best Overall Result in Economics, and the Ngozi Osueke’s Prize for the Best Behaved Graduating Male Student. Other prizes the lad won are the Vice- Chancellor’s Prize for the Best Student in Business and Social Sciences, University’s Prize for the Best Student in Economics, Parent Forum’s Prize for the Best Student in Business and Social Sciences and Parent Forum’s Prize for the Best Student. For him to have earned this, does it mean that he had no time for extra-curricular activities on campus? Not quite, he responded quickly, adding that fate had a hand in all of this. According to him, he had a girlfriend while he was at 100-level, but the relationship crashed as quickly as it started. The youngster, who attended Mayflower School, Ikenne, Ogun State adds, “Yes, I had a girlfriend while I was in 100-level, but we discovered that our views and ideas were different. We had to discontinue the relationship, and that was where I ended everything that had to do with romance on campus.” On his role model, he notes, “I will consider anyone who is affecting the lives of the people positively anywhere he or she finds himself or herself as my role model.” Sotubo’s mother, Adebukola, who offers an idea of her son’s next agenda, notes, “After his one- year compulsory National Youth Service Corps scheme, he will be going for his master’s programme.” The mother of three, who works with an international agency, however, will not reveal whether he will do the programme in the country or overseas. Meanwhile, of the 288 graduands, 17 of them made first class grade, while 62 others obtained second class upper division. In his convocation lecture entitled: Higher education and The Nigerian 20-2020 dream, former Vice-Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Prof. Michael Faborode, examines the nation’s higher education and submits that a lot still needs to be done in the sector. He notes that the task of rescuing and refocusing the nation’s higher education is becoming more daunting by the day. According to him, policy inconsistency and recurrent somersault is a major complication. Faborode, who is the Secretary-General, Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, explains that the governments of emerging economies support, fund and promote institutions of higher technical learning, as well as academies of engineering and technological sciences, among others. Also, the former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission and Crawford University Council Chairman, Prof. Peter Okebukola, notes that for the public universities to get optimal result in infrastructure development, the Federal Government’s N1.3tn revitalisation funds needed to be judiciously spent. Pointing to a 2012 study conducted by the Global University Network for Innovation, Africa, he says though funding plays major role in improving quality, there is still need for quality university leadership, staff and students. He adds, “With inept, inefficient and corrupt management, the huge injection of funds will have minimal impact. Second, if the students come poorly prepared from the secondary school level, with poor study habits and are morally bankrupt as a consequence of poor home training, the effect of huge buildings and fat salaries of staff brought about by the huge injection of funds will not go far. “Third, if the quality of staff in terms of potential to deliver quality education and moral upbringing is low, we will be climbing a greasy pole in trying to improve quality of the system through funds injection only.” The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samson Ayanlaja, notes that the university’s vision is to produce a new generation of skillful, knowledgeable and honest workforce and leaders. He says, “We have continued to excel in the teaching and learning and acquisition of knowledge which, as we know, is the present global intangible currency that translates to skill, competence, knowhow and consequently economic development and national technical advancement. “The university is addressing the scourge of unemployment headlong by attempting to bridge the skill gap and exposing students to hands-on entrepreneurial skills.” |
