“There is a Riot in Rivers state polytechnic Bori this morning as students prostested against the maltreatment of a final year Elect/elect student, Nsikak Effiong . It started when the 2013/2014 National Association of Akwa Ibom state students Election was about to be conducted, and everyone was asked to leave the hall (Except the eleco members) in order to start the election. The guy involved was one of the eleco members but was asked to go out also which he refused, according to him, he said he wanted to ensure dat the election was not rigged… A member of the eleco body then decided to invite the school security who on arrival started beating up the guy without asking questions, the guy got angry because of that and started fighting them. The security team then invited the C.S.O who then came with about 5 police men, when they arrived they started beating up the guy using rods, planks n gun… But the guy stood his ground, that he is not going anywhere… By that time he was already soaked with blood. But still he resisted them. The C.S.O had to call some ugly looking SARS guys, when they arrived, they talked to the guy n he decided to follow them. The insidence took place for about 4hrs before they finally took the guy. Rumour started spreading this morning that the guy died in police cell because they refused to treat him so students started protested. when they got to school, they started destroying properties and when the C.S.O came out, the students pounced on him and beat the hell out of him while his security boys ran away… They dragged him with blood all over his body to Police station to confirm weda the guy was dead, when they got close to the station, police men started shooting teargas to scare the students away.. The D.P.O came out and told the students that the guy was still alive and took some students to go and see him inside cell. when the students came back, they then matched back to school and started destroying properties and villagers joined them and started looting computer systems, flat screen tvs, generators and other electronics inside the school I.C.T lab.” |

President Goodluck Jonathan has applauded the attention his administration is giving the Igbos whom he said are well represented in his government and are being appointed to positions which no previous administrations ever gave them. The President also said the Igbos had also benefited from many projects completed by his government in the South-East. He said these during this year’s World Igbo Congress Day in Houston, Texas, United States. The event had held on Saturday, but a copy of the President’s speech at the ceremony was only made available to journalists by the presidential spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, on Thursday. President Jonathan, who said his administration’s appointments were based on competence, equity and fairness, said he would leave it to historians to determine whose administration had done more for the Igbos in terms of federal appointments. He said, “In the pursuit of productivity and excellence, we have appointed competent and capable men and women to positions of high authority and strategic responsibility in all fields of national endeavour. “In our dogged determination to develop our country, the Igbos are well represented and in some of these appointments, the Igbos are having them for the first time. “Some have said that this government has done more in appointments than any other in our history for the Igbos, but that is a matter for the pundits and historians. Let me state that appointments by this administration, across the country, will continue to be based on equity, fairness and competence. “Even when some utilise politics to undermine our commitment to fairness and justice, we will deploy the principle of Federal Character to progressively correct it. No part of Nigeria under my leadership will be shortchanged.” He added that in terms of projects and policies, the Igbos had benefited from his administration’s commitment Accordingly, the President said his administration had completed many federal roads which were left in bad state by previous administrations. He said, “Similarly in projects and policies, we have continued to do our best. Throughout the South-East, we inherited federal roads in very poor conditions. “In spite of the highly competitive demand and constraints on funding, we have taken on most of the major roads, realising the impact that their improvement will have on business and life in our country. “The Owerri-Onitsha Road, which was under construction at the outset of my administration, has been virtually completed. Three other very important roads, the Enugu-Onitsha expressway, the Enugu–Port Harcourt road and the Nguju-Edda- Nporo-Ohafia road which cuts across Ebonyi and Abia States, are steadily progressing. Our hope is that improved budget and Sure-P funding will see quicker action in the months ahead. “The Obiziora-Iziagu road and Enugu-Abakaliki road are some of those that have progressed to good standard. Further attention will be focused on the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene road which is already being addressed remedially by the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency. “The Igbos, being a very mobile people, have also benefitted from works in other leading roads nationwide. The Ore-Benin road long known as a deathtrap has been totally transformed and now provides a safer and more reliable ride. The Lagos- Ibadan road is similarly being reconstructed and the Benin-Lokoja-Abuja road is now being dualised as we are doing in other roads in the far North.” The president also applauded the Igbos for their achievements and contributions to the development of Nigeria. “All through our history, the Igbos have cut a distinguishing niche in all aspects of our national life in the areas of education, sports, politics, science and technology, literary excellence, enterprise, diplomacy, among others,” he said. Among whom, dead and living, the President mentioned as starling reflection of Igbos’ achievements and donation to the entire country included, late Biafra warlord, Ikemba Chief (Dim) Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, his father, Chief Louis Ojukwu. They also included Sir Onyechere Anyiam Osigwe, who the President said was the first Nigerian to own an ocean-going crude oil conveying tanker and engage in the crude oil export trade, Dr. Oliver De Coque, Onyeka Onwenu, Chinua Achebe stands tall, supported by Cyprian Ekwensi, Chris Okigbo, Flora Nwakpa, Chimamanda Adichie and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe. Others are Sam Mbakwe, Akanu Ibiam, Michael Okpara, Jaja Nwachukwu, and Nwankwo Kanu. |

Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samson Parker, has given an insight to how the dreaded Ebola virus crept into the state and claimed its first victim, Dr. Iyke Samuel Enemuo, a medical doctor. Giving an update on the ebola virus disease in the state Friday, Parker said the late Enemuo treated a Nigerian diplomat attached to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Oluibukun Koye, who had evaded the surveillance team in Lagos to travel to Port Harcourt. He declared that Enemuo was aware that Koye had the ebola virus disease (EVD) before treating him at a mushroom hotel in Port Harcourt. Parker said: “He (Koye) had received the late Dr. Patrick Sawyer in Lagos. Upon developing the symptom, he confided in a female colleague, called Lillian, who contacted the late Dr. Enemuo. It was after contact was established with Dr. Enemuo that Oluibukun Koye flew to Port Harcourt to see Dr. Enemuo”. "To conceal his movement, Koye, who had been under surveillance with other people for having primary contact with the late Dr. Sawyer, the Liberian-American who transmuted the Ebola virus into Nigeria, sneaked out of the isolation unit where he was being observed and took a flight to Port Harcourt and switched off his phone so that he cannot be reached or traced should he answer a call." The Health Commissioner also disclosed that the number of persons under surveillance in the state has increased from 100 to 160. "Our contact tracing team is working seriously to make sure we contain the spread of the Ebola virus in Rivers State," he said. It was also disclosed that Enemuo’s wife who gave birth only three months ago, is ill, She was said to have developed symptoms of the disease and currently under quarantine. She was said to have requested to be taken to Lagos and kept in an isolation unit for treatment and observation. “She is also a doctor. Her three-month-old baby is alive and well. The result of the test conducted on her (for Ebola) is not yet out,” Parker said. |
Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa on Friday appointed former President Olusegun Obasanjo as the pioneer Chancellor of the newly established Jigawa State University in Kafin Hausa. The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Haruna Wakili, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Dutse. Wakili said the State Government had sent a delegation to present the appointment letter to the former President at his country home in Abeokuta. He explained that the appointment was based on Section 8 of the Jigawa State University Law, 2013. Wakil said that Section 2 of the Second Schedule of the law also supported the appointment. The two sections, he said, vested on the Visitor of the University the powers to appoint Chancellor for the institution. He added that extensive consultation was made before reaching the decision to appoint Obasanjo as the pioneer chancellor of the university. “The government arrived at the decision after due consideration of his immense contributions to the making of modern Nigeria; as former military head of state and two terms democratically elected President. “Obasanjo is an internationally recognised and respected elder statesman and indeed an eminent personality of proven integrity who served his country to the peak, diligently, selflessly and sincerely,” he said. The commissioner stated that he was part of the delegation that presented the letter to the former president. “I am therefore glad to inform you that the former President had accepted the appointment and assured the governor and people of Jigawa of his readiness to serve. “He also promised to do all that was possible to take the university to a greater height.
