Former Manchester United defender, Patrice Evra visited the popular Oshodi underbridge in Lagos State on Saturday.

Evra’s visited Oshodi as part of the Chess in Slums initiative by founder, Tunde Onakoya.

On Thursday, Onakoya had announced on Twitter that a Manchester United legend would be visiting the Oshodi underbridge to play chess with less fortunate kids, asking his followers to guess who it was.

He wrote, “A Manchester United legend/former captain and a UEFA Champions League winner will be coming to play Chess against some of the kids in our academy at Oshodi underbridge. Can you guess who it is?”

There were many guesses as to who it would be until Friday evening when Evra, referring to the nickname Nigerian football fans gave him, revealed in a video that he would be visiting Lagos, Nigeria.

“Breaking news! Evra bus stop will stop in Nigeria for the first time ever,” Evra announced.

In a video posted on his Twitter handle, Evra was seen playing chess with some of the kids in the Oshodi underbridge.

About 4,500 aggrieved investors have lashed the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Chinmark Group, Marksman Ijiomah, over unpaid funds invested in the company despite many deadlines given for refund.

Caught in the web also include a social media influencer and brand ambassador for the “investment company”, Amanda Chisom; as well as another social media promoter of Chinmark, Harrison Gwamnishu.

The outraged investors, for days, have launched trials on social media, dragging Chinmark, Ijiomah, Chisom, Gwamnishu and all those who promoted the company on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and other social media platforms.

The pained investors lamented losing their hard-earned money to Chinmark while alleging that the group was fraudulent.

The PUNCH learnt that the investors were promised mouthwatering return on investment to commit their funds running into billions of naira in Chinmark said to be into real estate, logistics, hospitality, and food businesses.

500 investors paid, 4,466 will be settled —Chinmark CEO
In a statement on his verified Facebook page, Chinmark CEO (Ijiomah) confirmed that his group received funds from “4,966 partners”, noting that “500 partners” have been paid so far but he had yet to publish the names of those that had received payment.

While he did not reveal the total amount received from all the investors, a receipt of a refund to an investor he posted on Facebook read N1.3m.

The Enugu-based businessman also pleaded with the remaining 4,466 investors to remain calm, saying that the operational bank accounts of his company were frozen by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

He also noted that Chinmark has received “lots of petitions from government agencies by aggrieved partners”.

Ijiomah wrote, “From the proceeds of our business (Hospitality, Transportation, Food and Logistics) despite our operational bank accounts being frozen by Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) on December 21, 2021 till date, we resumed payment to our partners on March 16, 2022; so far, out of 4966 partners, we have been able to pay 500 partners following an arithmetic order from our backlogs.

“In a bid to show transparency in our dealings as always, full names of paid partners ought to have been published today but several calls/messages/emails from our distinguished partners have further restricted us from doing this.

“Let me reassure you that your money is safe with us and we remain committed to repaying all partners soonest, update on partnership repayment will be provided always and your managers will call to follow up; until then, I would humbly request you to kindly bear with us.”

Chinmark operations illegal —SEC
In a December 25, 2021 press statement on its official website, SEC described Chinmark as an “illegal operator”.

“The Commission hereby notifies the investing public that neither FinAfrica Investment Limited nor Chimark Group is registered by the SEC and the Investment Scheme promoted by these entities are also not authorized by the SEC.

“In view of the above, the general public is hereby warned that any person dealing with the within named Company in any capital market-related business is doing so at his/her own risk,” the statement partly read.

Efforts by The PUNCH to confirm from SEC Head of Corporate Communications, Efe Ebelo, whether the Commission froze the bank accounts of Chinmark or not were unsuccessful as of press time.

When contacted on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, Daniel Ndukwe, said, “The police is not a debt recovery agency.”

Also, spokesman for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Wilson Uwujaren, told our correspondent that he was not aware of any petition written by the aggrieved investors of Chinmark Group.

I still don't know why Nigerians always settle for less. We don't need prophets to tell us that Nigeria’s education system is in life support. Ask yourself why our leaders like the President, Vice President, Governors, Lawmakers, and others send their children abroad to study. You may not be far from the answer, our system has collapsed.

Infrastructure wise, public universities are nothing to write home about. I remembered a popular Senator saying that public universities especially the new ones are glorified secondary schools. He may be right. Some secondary schools in other African countries have better basic infrastructure, such as laboratory, library, electricity and learning environment than some public universities in Nigeria. With this, do you expect our leaders to allow their children to school in Nigeria? They know that the education system in Nigeria has collapsed.

Public primary and secondary schools especially the state-owned schools are in deplorable conditions and do not receive sufficient attention from the government. Most buildings are dilapidated and in dire need of renovation. it will take a strong union like ASUU to revive them. Our Universities would have been in that condition if not for ASUU.

ASUU demand of 1 trillion naira to revitalize the 48 Federal Universities in Nigeria is too small when compared to what other universities in Africa get as Budget.

The Federal university with the highest budgetary allocation in 2022 is the University of Nigeria (UNN) and it is less than 25 billion naira and its 2021 Internal generated revenue (IGR) gotten from fees paid by students, money from alumni and donations to the university is less than 3 billion naira. The University of Cape Town and University of Ghana budgetary allocation from government and IGR is over 100 billion naira and 60 billion naira respectively. This clearly shows that Nigeria universities are grossly underfunded. The average budget allocation for Federal Universities is less than 13 billion naira and 90% goes to recurrent expenditure and 10% to Capital.

We all need to support ASUU in this fight for the sake of our children's future and to also put an end to education tourism estimated to be 1 trillion naira annually.

If Nigeria want to compete globally, then she must do what others are doing.

Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Lagos State Council Chairman, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (aka MC Oluomo) by the national body of the union, Akinsanya and all members of the union have withdraw their membership from the national body.

Rising from a meeting at the state secretariat, Agege, Akinsanya said all attempts to have an amicable resolution to the crisis with the national body have failed.

In fact, he said, members have protested to the Lagos State Government about the state of affairs in the union.

“Being a law abiding and responsible citizens, we have decided to explore all avenues for peace in the interest of all, we will not support any action that can threaten the peace that we cherish so much in Lagos State.

“Therefore, I, Comrade Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, on behalf of the State Administrative Council (SAC), State Executive Council (SEC) members and the entire union rank and file members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Council with over 200 Branches and Zones hereby resolve to immediate withdraw of our membership and operation from the National body of NURTW for peace to reign in Lagos State and to write the Lagos State Governor, Lagos State Ministry of Transportation (MOT) and other relevant agencies about our decision,” he said.

Akinsanya called on Lagos State Government to take over the running of the affairs of the union with the constitution of a park Management Committee for motor garages and parks in the state, thereby ensuring peace and tranquility, pending the determination of the matter in the interest of the good people of Lagos State.

He urged union members to go about their activities without or molestation pending when the state government will make announcement on their request.

“If you see policemen in your parks, do not be afraid. They’re on ground to protect us,” he said.

President Muhamadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Arc Sunday S.T. Echono as the new Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

Echono, the immediate past Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Education, takes over from Prof. Sulaiman Elias Bogoro, whose five year tenure will end on March 18, 2022.
