Politics › Naira Devaluation: Importers Abandon Cargoes At Ports by mrofficial(op): 11:20am On Mar 12, 2015 |

Lagos—CONGESTION at the ports is beginning to gather momentum as importers have abandoned their cargoes following the continuous slide of the Naira against the American dollar which currently stands at N250 to $1.
Besides, there has also been a steady increase in number of abandoned containers particularly at the Tin Can Island port. Stakeholders confirmed to Vanguard that the worsening exchange rate situation has prompted the Tin Can Island Customs Command to increase its official transaction rate from N165 to all-time high N199 to a dollar.
Confirming the development, the Customs Area Controller in charge of the Tin Can Island Customs, Mr. Zakari Jibrin said recently that the Auto Policy of the Federal Government and the upcoming 2015 election has caused importers to abandon their cargoes at the port.
In an interview, Vice Chairman of the Tin Can Chapter of the Association of Nigeria Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) Mrs Ada Akpunonu said that the instability in the exchange rate has caused importers to stay away from importation and that imported cargoes have been abandoned at the port.
According to her, commercial banks have equally stopped lending money to potential businessmen.
Speaking on the imminent port congestion, Akpunonu said, “many goods are trapped at the port, there is bound to be congestion, most of the importers borrowed money from the banks, before they collect their Bill of Lading they must make the payment, but what is happening now is that, with the exchange rate, they are finding it difficult to get the balance and pay back in order to collect the papers and clear their goods”
“Many importers with Bill of Lading are finding it difficult to pay duties. There is no cargo that does not go into demurrage in Nigeria and shipping companies start collecting money immediately the cargo lands at the port” she said.
Akpononu confirmed that customs is currently implementing an official transaction rate of N199 to US$1 for transactions. Source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/03/naira-devaluation-importers-abandon-cargoes-at-ports/ |
Politics › Only God Can Help PDP Win Poll Now — Gbagi by mrofficial(op): 11:07am On Mar 12, 2015 |
By Henry Umoru
ABUJA—AHEAD of the presidential and general elections fixed for March 28 and April 11 respectively, former Minister of State for Education, Kenneth Gbagi yesterday accused the ministers, heads of Parastatals and aides of President Goodluck Jonathan of leaving the campaigns for the President alone to handle, even as he said that only God would help the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP to win the election. He said, “What I am saying is that God is a God of miracle, He can do miracle.”
Speaking with Vanguard yesterday at his Asokoro residence, Gbagi also alleged that governors of the PDP that cut across the country were not working in tandem with President Jonathan, just as he urged the ruling party to desist from personal attack on the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari, retd and face issue-based campaigns if the PDP must win the polls.
He said, “The governors as it were are not with Mr President, I repeat, the supposed governors are not with Mr President. You read a scoop two days ago that seven governors defecting. Even if they don’t physically defect, their body language and instructions to their followers are different from what we are seeing in the media. We need to move drastically and quickly so that we do not have a situation where we are seated and we are captured. Governors across Nigeria are not with the President.”
The 2014 Delta State governorship aspirant, who asked those attacking the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega to stop that, stressed that fighting the INEC boss was not necessary and justifiable, but those who worked to win would be declared the winners and those who did not, would be declared the loser of the election.
Gbagi, who accused the PDP of not doing enough in the area of selling the party, and the achievements of the present administration to Nigerians when it had the opportunity to do that, warned against over heating the polity, adding that if PDP members, leaders, stakeholders had put in their resources, energy and time to campaign the way the President did , it would have been a game sealed for PDP.
He said, “I am taken aback largely. You are here with us when we did the election in 2011 and we were at the forefront. I am disappointed that the entire campaign situation has been left alone to the President largely.
I have sojourned the nook and crannies of Abuja and the north in the last few days and my conclusion is that; where are the ministers, where are the DGs, where are the Permanent Secretaries, where are the agencies of government. As it were, all have been left in the hands of Mr President to do his job all by himself.
“I personally sat and held Buhari spellbound in 2011 election and we made slide successes. I don’t see anybody, let all the ministers come out and begin to pubic individually what they have done in their ministry with what they were given and how they spent the money and leave accusing Buhari as a person but tackle the issue of politics.”

Politics › Nigerian Troops Dislodge Boko Haram Militants From Lame/burra Forest In Bauchi by mrofficial(op): 10:08am On Mar 12, 2015 |
Nigerian troops at the 33 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, today concluded the dislodgment and clearing of Boko Haram terrorists from Lame/Burra forest, which traverse Ningi and Torro Local Government Areas of Bauchi State. A statement released by Nigeria Army spokesman, Colonel Usman Sani, disclosed that all the camps in the forest have been destroyed.
According to him, "During the operation that started since last weekend, quite a number of terrorists were killed, their weapons and equipment destroyed. Similarly, a sizable number of arms, ammunitions, food stuffs, Hilux vehicles, motorcycles and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were recovered by the troops. "The recovery include 3 Hilux vehicles, 12 motorcycles, 4 AK-47 rifles, 1 Fabrique Nationale rifle, 1 Small Machine Gun (SMG), 1 Police Teargas pistol, 36 Primed IEDs, 56 rifles magazines, over 500 rounds of 7.62 milimetre ammunition, 6 jerrycans of groundnut and palm oil and several IEDmaking materials amongst others. "It will be recalled that the forest has been notorious hideout of the BHT from where they organize raids, kidnappings and attacks on hapless and innocent citizens and security forces. With this the surrounding communities would enjoy increased peace and security in their respective areas." stated Col. Sanni.
The clearing of Lame /Burra forest follows rumors since yesterday that troops have retaken Bama township in Borno state, but Col. Sanni has yet to confirm that development. Source: http://saharareporters.com/2015/03/11/nigerian-troops-dislodge-boko-haram-militants-lameburra-forest-bauchi

Politics › Governor Fayose Faces Backlash Within PDP For Rabid Rhetoric by mrofficial(op): 6:20pm On Mar 11, 2015 |
SaharaReporters has learned that several governors and top officials of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are beginning to distance themselves from what one of them characterized as rabid vituperation from Governor Ayo Fayose, who has become notorious for predicting the imminent death of Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Several PDP sources told our correspondent that Mr. Fayose’s intemperate statements were now generating negative reactions even among the fold of the party’s governors.
PDP Governor's Forum in Lagos... Evidence of other governors’ disquiet emerged on Tuesday at the end of a forum convened by the PDP governors in Lagos. Some of Mr. Fayose’s colleagues, including Governors Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom and Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo, reflected on the outcome of their meeting, but unavoidably commented on Mr. Fayose’s venomous comments and incessant castigation of Mr. Buhari during he (Fayose’s) turn to speak at the event which took place at Eko Hotel in Lagos. Some of the PDP governors remarked that, rather than marketing President Goodluck Jonathan, who is their party’s candidate, Mr. Fayose’s statement at the forum merely attacked Mr. Buhari’s person, eliciting repulsion from their audience.
Originally, the PDP governors’ forum was convened to woo civil society groups into backing Mr. Jonathan for a second term. But the agenda seemed a tough sell to many groups that participated.
A source familiar with the organization of the forum told SaharaReporters that the governors aimed to “sell Jonathan” to the civil society while also using the live televised coverage of the event to market the incumbent president to a larger audience. However, some of Mr. Fayose’s colleagues admitted in private and publicly that his incendiary and uncouth remarks became a total gaffe. One governor told our correspondent that the Ekiti governor’s comments unfortunately defined the event and became the highest turn-off factor for their audience.
In his speech, Mr. Fayose disclosed that his own mother uses sanitary diapers due to old age, and said he wished to extend diapers to Mr. Buhari, adding that the APC candidate’s age demanded that he be on diapers as the governor’s own mother. The comment misfired, with members of the chuckling uncomfortably at Mr. Fayose’s disclosure of what should be a private matter concerning his mother.
Although the forum was designed as an opportunity to “interact” with civil society, and later adjusted to include the media, some participants grumbled that there was little or interaction allowed.
“It came out as their own [PDP governors’] talk show where they just asked us to give President Jonathan the benefit of the doubt for a second term,” one social activist who took part said. He added, “They just spoke and spoke, abused Buhari and Tinubu, took about three questions and said we should go for lunch.” Another participant pointed to Mr. Fayose’s statements. “Governor Fayose shocked many of us with his intemperate and childish remarks. He even insulted his own mother without realizing it,” she said.
A former chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Ikeja, Monday Ubani, was among a few outside participants allowed to make brief comments before lunch and the closure of the forum. Mr. Ubani praised the initiative to convene a meeting with the civil society to get feedbacks on government programs, but regretted that the meeting seemed to have been narrowly shaped by the forthcoming elections.
He advocated that the forum be required to happen on a regular basis to keep citizens informed and to generate grassroots responses to government policies.

He said the commission received between 170,000 and 190,000 PVCs, and noted that remaining ones would be brought before Friday this week.
He said, “The PVCs just arrived from Abuja. We have them in cartons, we have like 74 cartons that have just come.

“We can not tell the exact number that are in a carton, unless we count them. But in rough estimation, all should be less than 200,000. It is above 150,000 and less than 200,000. It is between 170,000 and 190,000.”

Politics › Enugu Prison Houses 1,754 Inmates Against 600 Capacity by mrofficial(op): 11:15pm On Mar 09, 2015 |
By Austin Ogwuda
Enugu — A total of 1,754 inmates are currently being housed at Enugu maximum prison, while 160 condemned prisoners have been on the death roll for years awaiting the hangman’s noose.
This startling revelation came from a one-day strategy meeting of stakeholders in the justice and prisoners welfare sector organised by the Catholic Institute for Development Justice and Peace, CIDJAP, in Enugu, weekend.
In attendance at the forum were the host, the Director of CIDJAP, Monsignor Ike Obiora, Anthony Ikechukwu Ani, SAN, the Attorney General and the Commissioner for Justice Enugu State, Sir Alloy Uchenwa, the Comptroller of Prisons, Enugu Prison, the Commissioner of Police, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. O. A. Oyekunle, representatives of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, and the Director of Public Prosecution, DPP, among others.
The forum noted: “It is worrisome to discover that Enugu State maximum prison was established in 1915 with a capacity for 600 inmates, but is currently housing 1,754 inmates.
‘’Nsukka Prison was built in 1926, Oji Prison in 1992 and Ibite Olo Farm Centre in 1976. All these prisons are housing more than their capacities and the inmates are sleeping in turns in the cells that are meant for two but taking eight persons per cell.”
