You really don’t want Davido‘s life.
Google his name now and what you see is a lot of news stories about friends of his dying, police inviting him to make a statement about his involvement and lack thereof, his first baby mama wishing him well and a thousand other truths, half-truths, and outright falsehoods. Not to mention the Lagos State Commissioner of Police reading out Davido’s home address in front of a few cameras that parlayed into a billion eyeballs around the world. Nice job Sherlock.

The easy (and to be fair, uncharitable) thought to fans and nonfans alike would be the Donald Trump way: he knew what he signed up for. Yet when JAY-Z delivered the above line on his Kingdom Come album, he was 37 years old- ten years removed from his first album and at least twenty away from his drug-dealing life. With half a billion dollars to his name at the time, he described the fame his career had attracted as worse than a heroin addiction. Imagine what it would feel like to a 24-year-old Nigerian artiste who has seen and experienced everything life has to offer in only six short years. Again for context: the almighty JAY-Z who is arguably the most powerful hip-hop artiste in the world, did not release his first album until he was 26 years old.

In the light of his recent travails-three of his friends passing away in one week- it is convenient, like several people have done, to point fingers at him and say he had it coming. Afterall, the man lives better than 90% of Nigerians do. He already has more money than many of us would see in a lifetime- and he’s not apologetic for it at all. On the contrary, he’s in-your-face: always flaunting his cars and jewellery and rockstar lifestyle. It’s hard to be sympathetic when he’s always shouting about the 30 billion naira his father allegedly has. The schadenfreude that followed is a normal reaction of a people oppressed and (rightly or wrongly) see wealthy people as ‘the enemy’.

There’s a Nigerian phrase for that: onpe! Na God catch am

A few years ago, precisely in 2015, Veteran Yoruba Actress, Idowu Philips popularly known as IyaRainbow left the movie scenes to relocate to London after one of her daughters died of ulcer.

Since then, the talented woman of substance has not been featuring in movie apart from Oku Aye produced by Tamilore Ojo Martins 2 years ago when she was in London.

Philips returned to Nigeria early this year to guard and featuring in a documentary that her UK based son, Femi Philip shot on Mose Orimolade, the Founder of Cherubim and Seraphim. 2 weeks ago, she celebrated her 75th birthday in grand style.

However, information reaching us has claimed that the septuagenarian actress has fully returned into acting as she will be storming location on 2nd November 2017 to play a lead role in a movie titled Okan Mi.

The film, which will be directed by Okiki Afolayan we learnt, will also feature the likes of Dele Odule, Femi Adebayo.

Best known for her roles in Nollywood blockbusters such as Fifty, The Meeting and Phone Swap, Nse Ikpe-Etim's talents are about to be exposed to an even wider international audience.

She is set to star alongside Oscar nominee, Eric Roberts and other popular actors in upcoming political drama Lone Star Deception.

Directed by Don Okolo and produced by Nkem DenChukwu, the movie tells the story of a politician, Stuart Sagle (Eric Roberts) who is leading in the race for Governor of Texas. A fling he had with a prostitute threatens to derail his campaign, which puts a second candidate, Tim Bayh (Anthony Ray Parker) into play, and Tim finds himself as the first black gubernatorial candidate in Texas' history.

It is not typical to have Nollywood actors in Hollywood movies, and following Genevieve Nnaji's role in Farming alongside Kate Beckinsale, this is another big win for Nollywood. We hope that this pushes the entire film industry to strive for even more growth.

The movie is set to be released in the US by August 2018. We don't know if or when it will show in Nigeria but we will keep our ears to the ground.
