FAQ’S pertaining to Zakaat (Part 1)

Q. Upon whom is Zakaat compulsory?
A. Zakat is compulsory on every sane, mature Muslim who is the owner of Zakaatable assets (this generally refers to money whether cash or savings, trading stock, gold and silver in any form, and non-property investments) equivalent to the Nisaab and holds the same for one lunar year.

Q. What is Nisaab?
A. The Nisaab is a monetary threshold. One who gains Zakaatable assets equivalent to the Nisaab amount after deducting liabilities, will be regarded as a Nisaab holder. The payment of Zakaat (for first time Zakaat payers) will be due exactly one lunar year later if the person still possesses the Nisaab amount or more.

Q: What is the value of Nisaab?
A. The Nisaab is the value of 612.36 grams of silver.

Q. How much will I have to pay?
A. One will have to give 2.5% of one’s net Zakaatable assets.

Q. What if one’s wealth fluctuates during the year?
A. Fluctuation of wealth during the year does not affect the payment of Zakaat. Zakaat will still be applicable on its due date on the amount held at the time on condition it is equal to or above the Zakaat Nisaab. Only if a person becomes insolvent or his finances fall into a negative balance does the calculation of Zakaat end. When the person gains wealth again, a new cycle of Zakaat calculation will begin.

Q. Who can I give Zakaat to?
A. Zakaat may only be given to needy Muslims who do not own in excess of their personal needs, surplus assets equal to the value of Nisaab. Muslim debtors whose liabilities exceed their Zakaatable and surplus assets also fall within the Zakaat-eligible category.

A person may not give their Zakaat to their parents and grandparents (including great-grandparents), children or grandchildren (including great-grandchildren) or spouse. It is permissible to give Zakaat to all other relatives including siblings if they are Zakaat eligible.

N.B. Zakaat cannot be given for construction projects (like building a Masjid or digging a borehole), nor to the rich or non-Muslims.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best

The Day of Eid

Thanksgiving and Expressing Gratitude

Eid Al-Fitr is a day that marks the successful completion of the sacred month of Ramadan. It is a festival that signifies the completion of an act of duty and devotion. It teaches us that real happiness results from performing one's duty and making sacrifices for a noble objective.

We should thank and praise Almighty Allah, for He guided us to fasting in Ramadan, performing the Taraweeh, and the various Ibaadah we have performed.

Allah says in the Qur'an, And (He desires) that you should complete the prescribed period (of fasting) and that you should glorify Allah for having guided you and that you may give thanks. (Al-Baqarah 2:185)

Joy and Rejoice

In celebrating Eid Al-Fitr, we should enjoy our time by sticking to what is permissible.

Eid is our joy; it is our feast. The month of Ramadan is a test from Almighty Allah. At the end of the month, we experience a great sense of achievement and closeness to Allah. It is the joy of spiritual fulfilment.

The day of Eid Al-Fitr is time for celebration. It is a day of decent happiness and joy.

Almighty Allah says, "Say, "In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy — therein let them rejoice. It is better than what they hoard." (Yunus 10:58)

Great Reward

The Day of Eid Al-Fitr is a blessed day for those who have observed their duty toward Allah during their fast in Ramadan. In the heavens, Eid Al-Fitr is called the day of reward.

It is reported in a Hadith that, on the day of Eid Al-Fitr, the angels stand on both sides of the roads and proclaim, “O believers, walk toward your Rabb, Who is the Most Generous. He favours you with goodness and gives you great reward. He commanded you to pray during the night and fast during the day. Now that you have obeyed Him, come and receive your rewards.”

As the believers finish the Eid Prayer, the angels say, “Allah has forgiven you. Return to your homes with the best of good and glad tidings. This is the day of reward. This day is called the day of reward in heaven as well.” (At-Tabarani)

As-Salaamu walaikum!

Today the world has become a global village that links different people, different faiths and different communities around common values that sustain humanity. It is thus incumbent upon us to learn to know one another and to live with one another, through communicating with one another. The human struggles in our country and province that have bound us together against oppression, discrimination and exclusion continue to glue our communities despite the differences that we have among and between. These struggles in this day and age against the current social ills like drug and substance abuse, crime, gender-based violence, HIV and AIDS, teenage pregnancies need both religious leaders and government to concert their efforts in consistently and continuously working together to eliminate these social problems to make our communities safe havens for our children and their children’s children.
It is therefore against this backdrop and spirit of strategic collaboration between religious communities and the provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal that the Premier wishes all Muslim leaders and faith communities in the province a happy and blessings-filled end of the month of Ramadaan. I congratulate our Muslim brothers and sisters for another time of spiritual renewal and recharge that will hopefully sustain your faith in Allah and prepare you for the coming year. May the end of this Ramadan bring the utmost peace and prosperity to you

akinsadeez:
This is terrible. Why will boko haram kill their fellow Muslims in the act of praying to the same God they believe in? Shekau claims in every video that they are doing the will of allah but can Allah support the slaughtering of his own his own adherents while offering praise and supplication into him. Is it western education that is being taught in the mosque?
This shows the boko haram people as pretenders and cowards. All they want is an excuse to kill people without remorse and they will all come to a sad end.
