Unfortunately those discounts are not legal. That’s what a lot of people don’t know or are not aware of they charge it back to the government. It’s tax payers money and that’s crux of the problem. It’s aid coined as self pay discount .
Pls help us demystify the illegality. Because it remains a mystery to some of us. Even people schooling in the US get discounted amounts based on payment structure. Its obvious when you see the itemized bill. Is that one charged back too? Even when you attend global conferences and training and get an Early bird discounted fee is that one also illegal?

Let's not think Nigerians living in Nigeria are daft. We might be paying this discounts back because we really just want what we want and are resilient but it's not enough to think that we are foolish.

Sometimes I wonder why the hospitals include all the plenty discounted amounts in the itemized bill in the first place? You can keep that for your internal accounting just give us the breakdown of what we paid for.... but then again I think they keep doing it cus they know are not doing anything wrong so they clearly show everything for their own record keeping and all.

Plus if this were really fraud, the Departmemt of Justice (DoJ) would have come for these hospitals by now. Monitors like PwC, Deloitte and the rest would have been placed in their organisations and every transaction would have been scrutinised for a minimum of 3 years while they are paying fines.

Some of us here are Fraud Examiners by Profession and while we know Health Insurance Fraud exists, this one doesn't qualify.

So please be fact based when declaring something a fraud not just because someone referred to it in a seemingly intelligent way without evidence.

Enough said!

I also raised it in my post, how come this hospital discount issue is a US Embassy in Nigeria thing? Abi is it only the medical discount given to Nigerians that are illegalhuh The world is now a real global village that people keep in touch with people round the world and know how things are done elsewhere.

My thought is, the US Embassy in Nigeria looked at different trival issues they can use to deny Nigerians visas enmasse, this so called discount was the strongest thing they could hold on to and the thing is working for them to the point Nigerians are even paying back discounts they got legally (To me this is donation to the hospitals. How do they reconcile their accounting books since the transactions have long been closed and patients deemed to have fully paid their Bills). I bet the US Embassy people laugh at how they have been able to push Nigerians to the wall and squeeze out hard earned money from them in the name or paying back discounts just to get US Visas. The joke is on Nigerians!
Exactly. It's so obvious that this appears targeted at Nigerians living in Nigeria.

We are not iliterates, the self pay option is always clearly explained as discount given because you paid cash upfront. If the hospitals were perpetruating fraud as the US Embassy claims then why would hospitals still have these packages clearly stated on their websites. Why would they gladly and willing give you a zero balance with a letter to submit anywhere you like stating that the discounted amount is not and will not be charged back. You cant tell me that all these hospitals are so brazen to keep breaking the law without the fear of having their licenses revoked. Rule of law is properly upheld in the US and the system works, you cannot brazenly be commiting fraud like you no send without having the Govt come after you. It's been how many years why have they not done anything to these hospitals? The joke has really been on Nigerians living in Nigeria. Imagine having to pay the hospital that has closed your account.

If the US Embassy or Govt knows for certain that its illegal, why are they then allowing the hospitals cash out with double payments? Since the discounted amount has purportedly been gotten back from the insurance companies or government why ask us to pay that amount to the same hospital again? Shouldn't they ask us to pay the Government since it's the Govt that has been ripped off according to them. Infact some hospitals have tried to reach them to explain yet they dont respond to emails or calls etc. So what then is this about if not just hogwash?

Na condition dey make crayfish bend. Our desire for better for our children is what is being used against us.

Anyways it's well, very soon this same rejected stone Nigeria will become the corner stone IN JESUS NAME;AMEN.

Nobody should dare quote me with rubbish about then stay in your country and give birth... You know yourselves!

Doctorsperati hospital(s) also gives discount. So just ensure you let them know you don't need any discount. My friend got denied twice for discount she didnt ask for. She used Doctorsperati in 2017.
I also suggest you sort out the discount in your itemized bill with the former hospital. Not saying pay back 82k neither am I saying 82k bill is impossible as it depends on the circumstances during the birth. However, just be sure they didnt make a mistake. All the best.

Miriam88:
i have already used the hospital with my first baby in 2018, and paid 10k but in the itemized bill i have a discount showing almost 82k dollar which i did not know cos the assured me it not a discount but its showing in my itemized bill so thats why i dont want to use the hospital again.this is my 2nd baby and my visa is still valid so i want to get a hospital with out the discount.cos i know i have to explain the first one when renewing my visa.

Majemitee:
Hello everyone! I had my son in Emory in 2018. With all the stories of getting rejected because of low Bills and filling B1/B2 instead of B2 when filling forms, I was so worried about my interview. I'm pleased to say we had a successful application in Abuja. Here is the transcript.

VO: Good morning, may I have your passports please.
(I hand them over)
VO: Have you two ever travelled together before?
DH: Yes
VO: Where?

VO: Was he born in the US? (Points at my toddler)
DH: Yes
VO: Do you plan on having another baby in the US
DH: Yes, in the future.
VO: Are you pregnant right now?
Me: Nods
Types for a while
VO: What do you do?
Me: Bleep
VO: And you?
DH: Bleep
VO: When are you travelling?
DH: In April
VO: For how long?
DH: 2 weeks (dh has an academic trip so we will go together and he will be back after 2 weeks while I stay back)
VO: Where is your other child?
DH: he's in boarding school, we didn't want to disrupt his schooling
VO: will he be making this trip too?
DH: Yes, the whole family
VO: Do you have any relatives in the US?
Dh: no we don't
VO: How much did you spend for the last birth?
Me: A total of about 7,100 (doc, epidural, hospital, tests, paediatrician)
VO: Where was this?
Me: Atlanta

Very short and straightforward. I've been so excited! Thanking God for favour.

Now I can ask. Please I need accommodation in Atlanta, any ideas?

See below

Day done still break for you again @123JohnF!

@all; I had to get the below image from a very dear friend to illustrate an example to you. In the form you can see there's space for MOTHER'S RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS and another for MOTHER'S MAILING ADDRESS, there's a huge difference, never forget to fill your Nigeria address as your residential address while using your US address as your mailing address. It's an innocent mistake that some really do get punished for at renewal, by all means avoid it please!

During registration and all other times, once you sight "RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS" or anything that looks like it on any form, please use your Naija Address....

TravelRe: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 6 by MumJ2:
[quote author=baldman post=81530620]The idea that people provide foreign address in other to claim cheaper bill is not correct and as the poster is trying to explain, they are different processes entirely. The forms you fill to process birth certificate is administered independently ( at least in my experience) and does not give any basis for you as a foreigner to be able to prove that you are resident in the US. The finance department will require that you provide a US Address so that the bills can be sent there and indeed a sort of Guarantor as they fully understand that we are non-resident.

I insisted that I wanted to use my Nigerian Address for the birth certificate and I was told that it has to be a US Address as the birth certificate will not be dispatched to an address outside of the US. I hope the US embassy can conduct independent inquiries into this and verify the truth, unless they are just looking for any excuse to deny us.

There is no hospital that will deal with you without you providing an address within state where bills will be sent to. It is this address that the finance department ( the billing people) work with, they do not have any thing to do with the birth certificate which is handled by social services department who merely acts as the handler of the forms as they have the duty to report births.
