Ogoni leader threatens secession of group from Nigeria

A factional leader of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), Dr Goodluck Diigbo, has threatened the eventual secession of the Ogoni nation from Nigeria in the event of another civil war.

Diigbo, who stated this in a press release signed by the MOSOP’s media editor, Tambari Deekor, further said the Ogoni people would only agree to continue to stay in Nigeria for the price of autonomy.

Diigbo, who had continued to be in a running battle with the mainstream of MOSOP from the time of Ledum Mitee, also said his MOSOP had set May 7 to June 6, as “Ogoni Freedom-Remembrance-Month,” in memory of the 30,000 Ogoni refugees of the Nigerian Civil War between 1967-1970.

He said the Ogoni people, across their communities and towns would make all needed materials and activities available for the success of the memorial month.

“MOSOP president/spokesman, Dr Goodluck Diigbo, said Ogoni will embark on a journey to regain its sovereign independence violated by the British Empire in 1901; this will be non-negotiable; if by any mistake, there is another civil war aiming at Ogoni.

“Diigbo recalled that Nigeria-Biafra Civil War was fought to decide who should control natural wealth, especially petroleum resources in Ogoni. He said he was alerting the world that in the event of another similar civil war, the Ogoni people will promptly declare an end to their relationship with Nigeria. Dr Diigbo said the Ogonis are monitoring the heart-beat of Nigeria and warned that the right to autonomy or self-determination remains a pre-condition now, for Ogoni to remain a part of Nigeria,’’ the statement read.

“Diigbo stated this on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 after the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) resolved and declared that 7th of May to the 6th of June, 2012 be observed as the Ogoni Freedom-Remembrance-Month,” the statement read.

“MOSOP dedicated the Month to Ogoni 30,000 refugees, most of them conscripts sent to battle fronts and were killed during the 1967-1970 Nigeria-Biafra Civil War. Diigbo said already another 10 percent of the civil war Ogoni casualties, numbering over 3,000 have been murdered by the Nigerian armed forces since 1993 in an attempt to intimidate MOSOP.

“Diigbo said all Ogoni children, men and women who died gave their lives for freedom behind the May 7 to 6th of June activities. The beginning of the Month coincides with the start of the annual United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues holding in New York”, the statement said.

you see gbenga daniel build opic house with the money of ogun state. this is not how it is done over here. instead of Oyo state or lagos state or ondo state using their money to build it. it is done through the private sector. which is possible to do in nigeria using USA or canadian companies.. this is how they build them over here.

And since nigeria has a bad name, we break up nigeria.. and everybody carry its father name. if igbos are the one who destroy the name of nigeria, they will end up destroying the name of biafra.. if it is the yoruba, they too. but we have to start from somewhere.

I think the people who have been saying Nigeria should continue, are not good people. when you look at the level of violent in Nigeria.

Look it is not possible to continue with the nation of Nigeria. But some people because of their own selfishness want the country to continue even while they know millions may die. It is an issue of people selfishness , that they are more important than the people.

You cant force people to live together. and I believe any southern christain living in the north should relocate. the govt can not protect them. Now on the issue of some northenener been christain. Majority of Northerners are muslim. the far north for example have more than 95% of its citizen been muslim. And I believe they should break up Nigeria to protect the people.

Even while you have some little muslim in the south. Their form of islam is different from the one in the north. There are different type of Islamic believe. that what I understand. just like you have different churches.. Their believe is different too.


Ethnicity play a major role in this crisis in the north.... which people are not talking about. I am a believer in the break up of nigeria to protect the life of the people. I dont think I want thousand of people I know to die because of adenuga money .. Even Adenuga is not going to leave inheritance for any yoruba person. So why should the yorubas die for Adenuga money that he will leave for his own children.. Adenuga and his children should worry about their inheritance and nobody I believe should risk his family for Adenuga children hesitancy.
