On March 10, 2000, Lagos State witnessed one of its most devastating road tragedies when a Dangote Group trailer loaded with cement lost control at Alapere Bus Stop, Ketu. The incident claimed the lives of at least 13 people and left about 40 others injured, most of them students waiting to board vehicles to school.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the trailer suddenly veered off the road at high speed, plowing into commuters at the busy bus stop. Another victim, Remilekun Ibrahim, also a student, survived with serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The horror of the accident quickly turned into anger. Witnesses reported that an enraged crowd attempted to lynch the truck driver, though his fate remained unclear. Some accounts claimed that he fled the scene, while others alleged he was rescued by security personnel. In retaliation, residents set the Dangote trailer ablaze, venting their grief and frustration over recurring fatal accidents in Lagos involving heavy-duty trucks.

Aftermath and Public Reaction

The Alapere tragedy sparked renewed public debate about road safety, traffic regulation, and the operations of heavy trucks in Lagos, especially in densely populated areas. Families of the victims were left grieving, and the community demanded greater accountability from transport companies and government agencies responsible for traffic enforcement.

Historical Significance

This accident remains one of the most widely reported fatal crashes in Lagos in the early 2000s.
