EducationASUU STRIKE -zero Hope For Nigerian Students As FG Fails To Redeem N1.3trillion by myjohnandrew(op): 9:27am On Apr 08, 2022
The hopes of the Nigerian students in public universities is hanging on a thread as the Federal Government of Nigeria remains adamant not to honor a 2009 agreement requiring the government to pay the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) a sum amounting to over N1.3 trillion. ASUU who are well known for embarking on an unending strike has called out the government for not honouring their agreements and also imposing a payment system which was described as "Anti-University" on all academic staff in the country.
The union who has been equivocal in their conclusion that the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) implemented by the Federal Government cannot be applicable to universities. They stated that it is not in alignment with the operations of the university system and should be discarded for the overall interest of tertiary education in the country. According to the the Coordinator of ASUU-Calabar Zone, Aniekan Brown, who spoke on Thursday, ASUU is committed to resistance for the life and preservation of the quality of public university education in Nigeria.
He stressed that though ASUU's struggles are misunderstood, there is no going back on the outstanding issues in 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement. Brown called on Nigerians and the general public to support ASUU'S stance on IPPIS and other outstanding issues on the FGN/ASUU 2009 Agreement as it is the only way to end its incessant strikes. Aside the dissagreement on IPPIS, one of the important reasons for the incessant ASUU strikes is the non payment of university revitalisation funds, which amounts to about N1.3 trillion.
But the Federal Government has over and over said it doesn't have the money to pay such an amount, citing low oil prices during the Muhammadu Buhari administration. According to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, who spoke in an interview last month, the the N1.3 trillion revitalisation fund was a promise made to ASUU by the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan when the country's finances were stable.

ASUU STRIKE: ASUU May Extend Strike By 4 Months (16 weeks), Says FG Has Zero Feelings For Students, Parents

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said that its ongoing warning strike may be extended for 16 weeks due to failure of the Federal Government to meet the union’s demands.

ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, told THE WHISTLER in a phone interview at the weekend that if at the end of its two months strike the government has not made any concrete steps to address their demands, the Union would meet and decide if they should commence a 16-week roll-over strike.

The ongoing strike which began on February 14 is now in its seventh week.

Osodeke said, “At the end of these two months, we will meet, evaluate the situation and if the government has not done anything, my congress will also advise that we should roll over the strike again. Maybe for 16 weeks.”

According to him, the government does not care about the plight of the Nigerian students or their parents because people in the government don’t send their children to schools in the country.

“This is what we’ve been saying since the beginning. These people don’t have any feelings for the Nigerian students or their parents, and they have no feelings for the system just because their children are not here.

“If their children were students here, they would’ve taken action long ago, solved the problem, and then schools resume. They have just made it clear now that they don’t care about these children,” he explained.

The ASUU President stressed that the Federal Government has made no attempt to meet with them to negotiate terms on how to end the ongoing strike.

“There has been no meeting to resolve the issue between ASUU and the FG. They’ve not reached out, we are still waiting for them.

He added, “The government is not really interested in education. If they were interested, they wouldn’t allow the strike to last more than 1 week but this is the 7th week and they’ve not made any comment.”

Asked what he thinks about the protests by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) over the strike, Osodeke said the students have a right to protest seeing as the system is not working for them.

“As Nigerians, they have a right to protest if the system is not working because we have given our own reason why we are on strike.

“It is in the interest of the students and the whole community so as students they have the right to protest,” he said.

ASUU had commenced a warning strike on February 14, 2022, to intensify its demands which include the renegotiation of its 2009 agreement with the government and deployment of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) to replace the Federal Government’s Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

On March 14th, the Union extended the strike by two months, until May 14th, indicating that the strike is not a fresh one but rather a continuation of the 10-month strike which began in March 2020 and was suspended on December 23, 2020.

Other demands by ASUU include payment of earned academic allowances, funds for the revitalization of public universities, promotion arrears, and poor funding of state universities.

ASUU has also insisted on the release of the reports of the government’s visitation panels to federal universities and regular payment of salary to lecturers.

EducationASUU Strike: UNICAL Orders Students Out Of Hostels by myjohnandrew(op): 10:33pm On Mar 30, 2022
The management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) has ordered students of the institution out of their hostels with immediate effect due to the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

A statement released on Tuesday by the Registrar Gabriel Egbe said following the industrial action embarked upon by ASUU, the school can no longer provide essential services in the hostels.

“The strike has adversely affected the provision of essential services in the halls of residence and on the campus, generally making it difficult to meet up with the management of these essential services.

“Consequently, the acting Chief Security Officer of the institution has been advised to lock up all the hostels as well as deploy security men to man all the halls of residence.

“Management wishes all students journey mercies, as they travel to meet their parents/guardians,” the statement said.

The management, however, urged students to take advantage of the strike period to engage in activities that would add value to their lives.

The ASUU strike, which has been going on for a longtime, has forced public universities in the country to shut down academic activities.

EducationASUU EXTENDS STRIKE FOR 2 MONTHS by myjohnandrew(op):
A meeting of the National Executive Committee of the Academic Staff Union of Universities was held in Abuja Sunday to decide whether to declare an indefinite strike as its one-month warning strike ends today.

A senior NEC member of the union, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the ASUU might declare an indefinite strike as there was no breakthrough in the negotiations with the Federal Government on the union’s demands.

The demands include the revitalisation of public universities, earned academic allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) promotion arrears, renegotiation of 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement and alleged inconsistencies in Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system (IPPIS) payments.

The ASUU’s NEC meeting was still ongoing ad of the time of filing this report.

The ASUU official, who attended the meeting, told us that there were no concrete offers from the government to convince the union to call off the strike.

’We are holding this NEC meeting to decide whether to declare an indefinite strike after the end of our one-month warning strike.

“But most likely, we may embark on an indefinite strike,’’ the official said.

CrimeASUU Decides Next Action As Warning Strike Ends Tomorrow by myjohnandrew(op): 6:10pm On Mar 13, 2022
The National Executive Council, NEC, of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will hold its meeting on Sunday in Abuja to decide the next line of action as its four-week warning strike comes to an end on Monday.

Speaking in a chat with Sunday Vanguard, yesterday, the National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said it is the NEC that would decide what next to do.He stated this while answering question on what next the union would do as its warning strike comes to an end.

“I cannot say this is what we are going to do next. It is the NEC that is going to decide that and we are having our NEC meeting on Sunday. We are an organised union and the majority opinion carries the day. Whatever the meeting decides will be communicated to all, thank you,” he said.

However, it was gathered that the meeting will hold in Abuja, unlike the previous one that took place in Lagos.Recall that at the last meeting held at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, the union decided to embark on a month warning strike to press home its demands from the government.

Since the strike started, no tangible progress has been made in the meetings held by the union with the government team, rather things seem to be getting worse.

Crime“my Mission Is To Give It Back To Other, 115men Down,” Female Graduate With HIV by myjohnandrew(op): 7:55pm On Mar 09, 2022
The Nigerian female graduate identified on Twitter as @the_afroPolite revealed how she was infected with Human Immune Virus (HIV), and she made it a mission to give it to other innocent people.

Social media users have been left in shock after a Nigerian lady took to Twitter to reveal the number of people she has infected with HIV after contracting it in 2016.

The disclosure was made in a tweet where another Twitter user revealed how she turned out, 3 years after being infected with the virus.

The first tweet by @NellyNesh19 had disclosed that she was infected with HIV at the age of 21 and is doing fine now she’s 24.

”Got infected with HIV at the age of 21 am 24 years now and am doing fine,” she tweeted.

The Nigerian female Twitter @the_afropolite revealed that she was infected with the virus by her brother’s best friend in 2016 when she was just 18.

She added that since 2017 when she tested positive, she “has made it a mission to give to others what was given to her without ac*ndom”.

She added that she has infected about 115 guys and 19 girls now, and is still counting.

He tweet reads:

”I got infected by my brother’s best man in 2016 when I was just 18. He was the first & only guy I had s3x wit till I turned 20. Since Dec 2017 I tested positive, I made it my mission to give to others what was given to me, without c*ndom. About 115 guys & 19 girls now & counting.

“Till then. I don’t mind dying today today. What’s my life worth if, although a graduate, I cannot get a job because I’m HIV positive? What’s my life worth if I’ve to depend on men for every penny I make? What’s my life worth, if I have to take ARV drugs regularly for life?

“You think you’ve the right to call me cruel? If you had known Ifeanyi, my brother’s wicked friend, you would have known what cruel looks like. Since no Nigerian bank wants to give me, a qualified banker, a job simply because I’m positive, then I must continue sharing it to others.

“If a guy, girl or so-called lesbian cannot control her sexual urges, I don’t mind giving it to her hundred times over. Easy money for me, pleasure and then a sharing of my pains to others.

EducationASUU Strike Continue - Demands Will Be Looked Into Within Six Weeks, Says FG by myjohnandrew(op): 12:44am On Mar 06, 2022
Our panel will use 6 weeks to look into the demands placed by ASUU,” says Labour Minister.

Clearly, ASUU will be on strike throughout the month of March until late April.

The minister said within six weeks, the committee set up at the education ministry will wrap up everything and send its recommendations.

He said: “A new team has been set up because they needed to have a second look at the Professor Munzali’s committee’s report which concluded the renegotiation agreement, and make sure, with ASUU’s contribution, that some of the allowances are not against the national salaries and wages commissions’s fixed salaries and allowances.

“If that is not done and we simply propose it to the government, it will not be accepted. So, it is important that they work well. So that whatever they present can be approved by the federal executive council.”

ASUU Strike: We’ll Block All Roads Linking To Abuja If The Strike Is Not Called Off – NANS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to block all roads to Abuja if the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)’s strike is not called off.

The association said that it will also match the Abuja streets on Monday to protest against the strike action by ASUU.

Speaking to BBC Hausa on Tuesday, the vice president of the union, Yazid Tanko Muhammad, said the protest had become necessary in order to rescue the educational system of the country from incessant strike actions.

He said: “The reason we choose to embark on a protest is that it is the only language that can be understood and it is the only way we can show the world our situations and feelings towards the strike.

“So, it is a protest which if we start, will not stop until the issues are resolved and the lecturers resume work.

“So we will block the roads linking Abuja from Kogi, Abuja from Kaduna and Abuja from Nasarawa states.
