PoliticsAngry Youths Attack UCCDA Team Over Demolition Of Structures In Uyo by mysidechick(op): 7:25am On Jun 27, 2019
Angry youths of Mbiaobong Anyaya village in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State on Wednesday allegedly attacked the team from the Uyo Capital City Development Authority (UCCDA) for demolishing illegal structures erected at the Mbiabong junction.

Eyewitness said the youths on sighting the state government bulldozer on Wednesday demolishing some structures came out and started hurling stones at the demolition team.

It was also gathered that there was no resistance from the villagers at the beginning of the demolition of the illegal structures the previous day being Tuesday.

Sources had it that the UCCDA team demolished no fewer than 5 containers and many kiosks illegally erected along the main road the first day.

According to a resident, who spoke to newsmen on condition of anonymity, “The UCCDA team came here on Tuesday and demolished people’s kiosks and containers. But the youths did not resist them on the first day.

“Surprisingly, this morning about 11, when the team started to pull down a bungalow that was attached beside a storey building, the youths started throwing stones and bottles at the team.

“In fact, vehicles and commercial vehicles that ply the route decided to divert to alternative streets. It was like the youths having observed the demolition on Tuesday decided to wait and attack the team today. If not for the police that started shooting in the air and scared them away, nobody knows how the situation would have ended.”

Meanwhile, a reliable source from the UCCDA, who is not authorized to speak to journalists, said some youths had resorted to stopping government from removing illegal shanties and the illegal mini market at the Mbiabong junction that were erected very close to the main Road and causing fatal accidents.

His words, “Government observed that those ramshackle, makeshift stores and kiosks erected on pedestrian walkways, under high tension wires, and the illegal market set up at the junction are not just illegal but dangerous.

“That is why accidents occur around the junction regularly (Mbiabong junction). Those illegal structures obstruct free flow of traffic and also cause fatal accident on that Road. So that is why government is saying, that should not continue. So those are the things government is demolishing and not buildings.”

PoliticsOgun Guber: Again, Gov. Abiodun Wins In Court by mysidechick(op): 7:18am On Jun 27, 2019
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has struck out another case seeking the disqualification of Prince Dapo Abiodun as the Ogun governorship candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 2019 general election.

Mrs. Iyabo Anisulowo, in the preelection suit, had approached the court to challenge the eligibility of Prince Abiodun as a candidate at the election over his alleged failure to participate in the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Scheme.

But the counsel to the Ogun State Governor, Mr Wale Abeeb Ajayi, had prayed the court to dismiss the case against his client arguing that participation in the NYSC scheme was never a disqualification factor in elections.

Delivering his judgment, Justice M A Mohammed on Wednesday noted that the plaintiff failed to establish that Dapo Abiodun presented false academic claims to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

He held that a candidate cannot be disqualified over failure to participate in the NYSC scheme, saying that a candidate can only be disqualified under Section 177 of the Constitution.

Consequently, the suit was dismissed.

This case is the final of the series of pre-election matters filed against the governor as other cases have been similarly dismissed.

Recall that the Supreme Court had dismissed a similar case brought by one Abdulrafiu Baruwa challenging the qualification of Abiodun to contest in the last governorship election of Ogun State on the ground of failure to disclose all his academic qualifications.

CrimeWoman Who Posed As Sanwo-olu’s Aide To Get Visas Arrested In Lagos by mysidechick(op): 7:44am On Jun 25, 2019
A woman has been arrested for posing as a staff Lagos State Governor’s Office at Italian Embassy in a bid to secure visas for some persons.

She was arrested at the weekend following an intelligence on the usage of the Governor’s Office for unauthorised purpose.

A statement Monday night by Gboyega Akosile, Deputy Chief Press Secretary to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, advised members of the public not to deal with anybody on consular affairs.

It read: “The suspect (name withheld), via an e-mail sent to the Embassy of Italy in Lagos allegedly posed as an official of Lagos State government and sought the country’s visas for some unsuspecting Nigerians.

“The embassy however wrote to the Governor’s office to authenticate the claims, which were later found to be false.

“The letter from the Italian embassy led to further investigation and her subsequent arrest and interrogation.

“Although, she denied the allegation claiming that her email was hacked, the Lagos State Governor’s office has sent the matter to the appropriate security agencies for appropriate action.

“In the meantime, the office has warned members of the public not to deal with any persons who parade themselves as government representatives in consular matters.”

PoliticsNigeria Election: Buhari Reacts To Rejection Of Atiku, Pdp’s Request To Inspect by mysidechick(op): 7:34am On Jun 25, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has welcomed ruling by the Presidential Election Tribunal rejecting request by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to inspect the contentious server of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

His spokesman, Garba Shehu, in a statement Monday night, said the opposition’s attempt to overreach judicial process was overwhelmingly rejected by a unanimous decision.

He said: “An attempt to cause the determination of an issue that constitutes the fulcrum of contention between the parties, at an interlocutory stage, has again been rejected by the tribunal.

“What this means is that Justice and fair hearing through due contest by the parties of a major issue for determination remains sacrosanct and remains considerable by the tribunal upon according parties just and fair hearing and not the other way round.

“The election petitions tribunal unanimously rejected the PDP’s request to inspect a server which existence is being disputed.

“The existence of a purported server is being contested and if a purported inspection had been allowed at this stage, it would have amounted to the determination that it indeed existed even when its existence is being contested.

“The electoral law prescribes manual transmission of results only and this was what the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did, in obedience to the law as witnessed by real electoral observers.

“YIAGA Africa deployed 3906 real individuals to run a parallel tabulation which returned the same results the INEC announced.

“Last week, the final reports of the International Republican Institute and National Democratic Institute (IRI/NDI) electoral observer mission made clear that the results of the election reflected the votes cast.

“President Muhammadu Buhari won with a majority of four million votes and because only real votes matter, INEC announced him as the winner of the 2019 presidential election”.

Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar has vowed to challenge, at the Supreme Court, the dismissal of their application in the substantive petition that is challenging President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election.
