Webtop and the dock were optional components that did nothing to detract from the overall appeal of the standalone phone. The Atrix scored consistently high reviews.

Android sales can be baffling sometimes. Despite the CES and MWC hype, analysts say the Xoom tablet may have sold just 100k units compared to the nearly 3 million iPad 2s sold already.

Nothing is really baffling about Android's sales, d oems are d albatross on android's neck,
imagine the ridiculous Motorola having xoom priced so high!
It's higher than the 64GB iPad2! Even
if the two tablets were equal in
specs, same amount of memory,
same power, same size, etc, the xoom may be able to compete.
Yet it has less memory (32GB)
and is priced $100 more than the
64GB iPad2. U wonder whether their executives actually went to a business school!
Not only is the Xoom thicker and less appealing
in design, it is seems Motorola is not facing reality, they ought to have crashed the price immediately ipad 2
came out!

Foreign Affairs / Pentagon Is Giving Libyan Rebels Close Air Support! by na2day1: 10:42pm On Mar 29, 2011
In case you had any doubts about where the war in Libya is going, the Pentagon has admitted today that two new weapons are now part of the coalition forces: The A-10 Warthog and the AC-130 Spectre.

Vice Admiral "Shortney" Gortney admitted today that Warthogs and Spectres "have been employed" according to the United Nations' resolution 1973. He stressed that they are not being used "in direct support of the opposition." However, that's exactly the purpose of those planes: To provide close support to ground forces.

What do these war planes do?

The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II aka Warthog is a twin-engine jet designed to provide close air support for ground forces. It eats tanks and any armored vehicles for breakfast, lunch and dinner thanks to its GAU-8 Avenger heavy automatic cannon. These beasts can take an entire Libyan armored column and blow it to smithereens in a few passes.

The Lockheed AC-130 Spectre is a gigantic flying gunship that vomits hell down to the ground in the form of 20mm, 40mm and 105mm cannon projectiles, some of them of the delicious depleted uranium kind. The main use of the AC-130 is close air support, force protection, and bombing raids.

What's really going on?

If, according to the Pentagon, these aircraft are "not being used in direct support of the opposition" forces, did they just sent them there on target practice? No. The Pentagon may pretend that these airplanes are not providing close air support to the rebel forces but the fact is that, when you take one of Gaddafi's tank out of the way, you are directly supporting the opposition. Perhaps not in a coordinated way, but in a definitive way nonetheless.

And while the rebels aren't necessarily calling coalition planes in when they need support, I think it's safe to assume that recon units—either drones and/or special operations units on the ground—are guiding these attacks to the places and battles where they are needed the most. In fact, you need to have recon units for these planes to operate correctly and kill the bad guys, not your friends.

Providing this kind of aerial support to rebel forces is not a bad thing, but certainly not strictly in line with resolution 1973. Knowing what these planes do, it certainly feels like the war is a-changin'. We will have to wait to see if it's for the worst or for the best.

Some combinations are as natural as peanut butter and jelly – Avatar & 3D, Apple & dictatorship, and G.EJ & Dame Patience. But do the BlackBerry PlayBook and the Android Market belong among those matches? If you ask RIM, the answer is a firm, definitive "yes."

The BlackBerry maker just confirmed the age-old rumors – it’s announced that the upcoming QNX-based PlayBook tablet will support Android apps. There are, however, certain limitations – while the process doesn’t sound overly complicated, developers of existing Android apps will need to put some work in to porting their software over.

Google Squashes Another Potentially Serious Bug

Google has responded to the alarm raised by an Android security expert of a bug related to the Android Market that could have raised a lot of trouble. The security hole was related to the recent implementation of the Android Web Market, and would have given hackers the ability to install malicious software fairly easily.

Co-founder and chief technology officer at Duo Security Jon Oberheide discovered the flaw last month and notified Google, who fixed it within "the last week or so." Users would have merely had to click on a malicious link on either their phones or on their desktops to activate the unwanted installation of rogue software. Oberheide said he was surprised nobody had discovered the flaw before (which he called "low hanging fruit"wink.

After last week’s scare with the DroidDream malware installed from Market apps (unrelated to this news today), Google is likely very relieved to have nipped this one in the bud before any damage was done. However, are we beginning to see the downside of Android’s openness? What if this well-meaning security expert hadn’t brought it up? While I hardly see this as cause for panic, perhaps the search king would be wise to amp up its detection and response to these kinds of threats (particularly if this latest bug was as easily detectable as the Duo chief claims it was).

Android Is Less Secure Than iOS, Says AV Maker Trend Micro

As Android’s market share continues to grow, it is inevitable that it will become a target for viruses and other malware. Indeed Steve Chang, the chairman of Trend Micro, a provider of security software, cautioned that Android is far more susceptible to malware attacks than iOS.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Chang claimed that Android’s open source infrastructure allowed hackers to better understand the underlying architecture and source code. In contrast, Chang gave Apple credit because he believed that they were very careful about malware and that it was "impossible for certain types of viruses to operate on the iPhone." He explained that Apple uses a "sandbox concept" which isolates the platform, preventing viruses from replicating themselves or decomposing and recomposing to avoid virus scanners.

Nevertheless, Chang accepted that iOS is not completely immune to security threats as the user is still vulnerable to social engineering attacks, whereby he or she is tricked into installing an infected app or visiting a malware ridden website.

It seems unlikely that merely having an open environment enables hackers to create more destructive malware. In fact, security by obscurity, which is a security principle that uses secrecy of certain components to achieve security (not to be confused with security through minority), is often criticized by security experts for providing false sense of confidence. The fact that iOS is not open-source and Android is may create an initial bump for iOS hackers, but in the end, a closed system is just as vulnerable as an open one, if not more. An open system like Android benefits from thousands of eyes of security experts all over the world that may examine the source and alert Google of potential vulnerabilities, thus making it more secure overall. No such crowd-sourcing effort is possible with a closed-source project, such as iOS.

It may be Google’s lack of a formal app approval process that allows viruses masquerading as legitimate apps to pepper the Android Market, misleading the unsuspecting user into installing them. For example, one of the early viruses on the Android OS appeared to be a media player app that, unbeknownst to the user, would start sending premium-rate messages from the user’s phone, leaving the creator of the virus with a healthy revenue stream generated by those messages.

Google acknowledges that Android users must necessarily entrust some of their information to the developer of the application they are using; however, Android ensures that the user can view permissions granted to a particular app and make a relatively informed decision about installing it. On the other hand, Apple’s rigid, often draconian app approval policies do have the benefit of filtering out most potential malware.

It is unsurprising Chang has warned users of smartphones to be wary of malware, since Trend Micro offers antivirus suites for both Android and iOS.

Would you take $1 billion to stay away from Android, apparently Nokia will

Earlier this year it was big new that Nokia had announced a partnership with Microsoft to start making WP7 phones. Reportedly the company did not move to Android because it would “feel like giving up”. And now according to Bloomberg, there’s a second reason. Microsoft offered Nokia a cool billion to sweeten the deal.

The agreement for the more than billion-dollar payment was part of a campaign by Microsoft to keep Nokia from choosing Google’s Android operating system, one of the people said. Nokia also opted for Microsoft because Windows Phone software, which is newer than Android and has a smaller number of handsets for sale, gives Nokia a better chance to stand out, one of the people said.

Nokia will still end up paying Microsoft for each license of WP7, but in the short term, they offset their software development costs. While Android doesn’t have licensing fees, it would still cost Nokia untold amounts of money for software engineers to make it work with Nokia’s hardware.

The second part of the reasoning only makes half sense. Yes, Nokia does stand a better chance of standing out with Windows Phone 7, as there are only a handful of manufacturers in the game right now. But on the other hand, they can’t do much in terms of customizing the software (like a lot of companies love to do with Android). How are they going to stand out with WP7 when there’s very little differences between the few phones available?

Nokia is already well known world-wide for their hardware. With the addition of the explosive growth of Android, it should have been a no-brainer to get a piece of the pie. But instead that pie will go to mostly HTC, Motorola and Samsung. Standing out by itself doesn’t guarantee success in the smartphone industry, having a good product brings you success. And as in most businesses, the more competition out there, the better the product becomes through innovation and the consumer wins.

No telling if Nokia’s strategy will work or not, but the Nokia-Microsoft deal is reportedly for five years. If Nokia doesn’t turn around profits in that time, they will go under before they can turn to Android for help.

Saab announces IQon, Android-based in-car infotainment system

Today Saab announced they will begin using Android as a base for their new car infotainment systems, dubbed IQon. Controlled via an 8 inch touchscreen, the IQon system will allow drivers to access music, navigation, car info and other information systems. Saab will be providing an API for developers to create applications that can access over 500 different parameters, from speed and direction of travel, to the steering wheel angle and the position of the sun. Sadly you won’t be able to access the Android Market from your Saab dashboard, but instead Saab’s own IQon Store, where they will provide high quality, relevant apps available to download on the go via the built in wireless modem. “Today’s customers want to be as well connected inside the car as they are at all other times,” said Johan Formgren, Head of Saab Aftersales and commercial project leader for IQon, “IQon will give them the convenient, seamless connectivity they enjoy with smartphones, while adding new car-specific programs and services.”

The service is currently being tested in a fleet of beta cars and Saab is showcasing the IQon system in their PhoeniX concept car a the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

Politics / Thank God Jonathan Didn’t Call Us Dimwits by na2day1: 10:30pm On Mar 01, 2011
For the legion of commentators who felt (and was therefore angered) that Jonathan went overboard in his reference (at Mapo Hall) to the South West as the ancestral home of rascals; what if I told you that your feelings were grossly misplaced. What if I had the temerity of also telling you that your emotional outpourings and other evaporative actions so far were akin to infantile radicalism- an action borne out of impulse rather than by matured, deep and introspective reasoning? This is because rather than get angry with Jonathan; I think we should be thankful to him for not calling us dimwits or irredeemable fools. Because that’s exactly what we have been acting like all along, regardless of being under the oppressive jackboots of the PDP for so long. Otherwise how can Jonathan’s PDP, like a bully, have persistently, repeatedly and continually treated us like bondsmen and women-BIG TIME SLAVES, and just when they merely called us rascals, we wanted to start another civil war.

It’s like someone- let’s call him a vagabond- who is not even half as smart, intelligent or physical as you, suddenly comes along and grabs and despoils your mother right before your presence. Not done with that, he sets upon your sister and virgin under-aged daughter; and goes right ahead to violently attack your wards and aides, maiming and clobbering and clawing and drawing red-hot blood in the process. Thereafter he goes on to plunder your inheritance, and proceeds to sentence you, your family and unborn children to a lifetime (60 years- longer than average life expectancy in Nigeria) of drudgery and servitude. And for all these atrocious acts you are never provoked to defiance or anger enough to as much as grumble openly or in silence, let alone pushed to commit murder or suicide. But you keep taking it in slowly, soaking it all up, suppressing the pain, and turning the other cheek; offering him another human blood sacrifice, another fresh womanliness, another precious ornament- so he can do as he pleases- just so he can leave you alone, but he still won’t let go. And meanwhile within you and your household is locked up all that it will ever take to snuff the living daylight out of this bully- this beast- this vagabond- this ingrate- this despoiler- and redeem yourself and family. But you choose to do NOTHING. And on the day he as much as merely calls you a rascal, you start complaining, blowing hot and cold, waxing philosophical and hysterical about how that you are not a rascal. So what are you- what are we, folks?

Honestly, I just wished all that the PDP has done so far- since 1999 to date was merely call us RASCALS, and our mothers, sisters and daughters were not repeatedly gang violated, our nascent ‘democracy’ not corrupted and corruption democratized, our resources not mindlessly plundered, our country men, women and children not brutally slaughtered in endless and needless ethnic and religious conflicts, our land not left for ruins, and generations upon generations of Nigerians down to the unborn not sentenced to servitude. If all that the PDP has done so far was merely call us RASCALS, then we should of all people feel most fulfilled.

But if they have actually done worse things to us and we are truly, truly angry and pained in our hearts and challenged as a result, then GREAT NIGERIAN RASCALS, I figure we should know what to do as true rascals. This should be no time for insulting and abusing each other’s mother or father – tribe or religion, as we have always done in our discourses; or time for mere, empty talk, which as they say is cheap. This also should be no time for sectional politics, for are we not all-of-us fully represented in the South West of Nigeria- the Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Urhobo, Efik, Ijaw- Christians, Muslims, traditional worshippers, and therefore all-of-us RASCALS. This instead should be time for planning and strategizing on how to flush out these VIPs-‘vagabonds-in-power’.

Or how can we keep returning the PDP every election (or selection) year and keep wondering what is happening to us- keep wondering why we should be called RASCALS. Therefore, it’s either they are the problem or we are. It’s either they are the rascals or we are. It’s either together our DNA is inferior compared to them, or we are all born equal. It’s either they alone have a monopoly of good luck and mischief at the same time, or we can match them toe-to-toe. It’s either as the majority we have the power to make change happen, as did in Obama’s America and currently happening in Tunisia, Egypt and across the Arab world, or we are too feeble, too effeminate, too lily-livered, and too spineless to take on the less than 3% of this population- this cabal so-called, that for 12 years now has been oppressing and keeping us in bondage.

However, I can see that the opposition is perhaps even the greatest problem we have- worse than the PDP. Because an opposition that behaves worse than roadside love-peddlers can never expect to be taken seriously. An opposition that pretends to be on the side of the people while merely serving as leprous fingers of the ruling party is worse than charlatans. An opposition that tries once, twice, thrice and don’t succeed they straight defect to the ruling party is bereft of any form of principle or ideological bent. An opposition that believes or is deluded that either Ribadu or Shekarau or Buhari or Okotie or Utomi or Momodu, notwithstanding their noble intentions or perceived level of goodwill and popularity, can singlehandedly take on and defeat the octopus and monster that the PDP has so far become, is an opposition that is either lacking in native intelligence or gut instinct or political wisdom or maybe plain deceitful or power drunk or self-serving, no doubt unserious or dimwitted or all of the above. SIMPLICITA!

Therefore they owe it to us- each one of them- to forthwith shelve their individual differences, pride, ego and ambitions- bend backwards, do whatever it takes, yes- make a little more sacrifice- so they can forge a common bond or alliance for the purpose of upstaging and dislodging the PDP. Clearly, without an alternative, credible, broad-based and all inclusive platform outside the PDP for the teeming population of the oppressed people of Nigeria, what is the use for all the hullabaloo about the recently concluded registration exercise- what is the use for the ever strident clamor for one-man, one-vote, with every  in the street knowing that the PDP will ever be happier, richer, better off for the oppositions’ votes that will be so, so, so STUPIDLY divided in their favor. What is the use of casting that vote knowing that at the end of the day, even if the elections were adjudged ‘free, fair and credible’ (like the charade that happened the other day at the Eagle Square that produced our KING OF ALL RASCALS), opposition votes would have been spread so thin not to cause any ruffles within PDP’s ranks. Thus anything short of that merger or alliance therefore, will be like living in a fool’s paradise- or better still, handing another easy and effortless victory to the PDP. And when that happens because consciously and deliberately permitted by our collective free choice, we should all have ourselves to blame- NO LONGER THE PDP. On our part as the masses- a people in dire need of true, patriotic and selfless leadership, this (merger or alliance) should be our irreducible minimum demand from the opposition. No more, no less! Except perhaps that is asking for too much. God bless you all.
