akwa ibom and calabar has their to brag over too as well. And rest of the south south zone
Akwa Ibom has Uyo, Ikotekpene, Abak, etc all fast developing cities.

Owerri dudes brag everyday about Old Owerri, New Owerri but Okigwe and Orlu in the same Imo state were made by Owerri to return to pre-war status.
TravelRe: Christmas In Owerri Is Always The Best by Nadio2019: 1:53pm On Dec 26, 2024
Why do Owerri people derive so much joy in seeing that Owerri is the only developing area in Imo state?
Their joy is in observing that the seeds they sowed for arrested development in Okigwe and Orlu areas have borne fruits. The seeds of denying government institutions and services for Orlu and Okigwe. The seeds sowed before 1999.

I might be tempted to agree with you.

What makes Owerri so beautiful is the ability to choose between having cash and free mind

You may have lacked cash and free mindedness to enjoy Nature's gift to mankind
The primitive greed of Owerri people who literally seized all institutions of government for Imo state and located them all in Owerri zone, without any thought of what can be located in the other two old cities in Imo State; that's the ugly thing about Owerri.
Why can't Owerri people see Anambra or Abia state where many cities thrive in one state because institutions of government are distributed in all the zones of the state?

Apart from that, Owerri fights any Imo gov who tried development outside Owerri zone. See how they set fire on road building machines in Orlu after four years of bombing down the little govt establishments there.
When Orlu and Okigwe ask for new state, Owerri people refuse but lobby for Anioma state proposal.

THE ANCIENT CITY ON THE HILLSIDE - OKIGWE.

Okigwe is the third largest city in Imo state in Nigeria after Owerri and Orlu. Okigwe is located in the Okigwe Local Government Area of Nigeria. The city lies between the Port Harcourt-Enugu-Maiduguri rail line, being the nearest city to the biggest cattle market in Nigeria located in the Umu Nneochi Area of Abia state. Thus, the city has grown into a major cattle transit town for the southeast and south subregions of Nigeria. Okigwe has a population of 132,237 (2005 census). Most of the population is made up of immigrant workers from other states. Okigwe city was the primary host site of the old Imo State University (now Abia State University)

And the road work got abandoned for five years. Ask: if the Federal Ministry of Works has no record of its roads and their conditions at any time, why don't the legislature bring the conditions of every federal road to the attention of the Ministry of Works? This is Owerri-Orlu Awka road literally completed in 1983 by the Federal Ministry of Works, but never used because a little bridge was not built. How did the Federal Ministry of Works "forget" its own road since then?

At best: why not regionalise construction and reconstruction of roads?

PoliticsRe: FG Halts South-East Road Projects, Initiates Contract Review by Nadio2019: 11:56am On Sep 08, 2023
This is Awka-Orlu-Owerri federal road completed in 1983 except a bridge at Orashi river not built when Buhari military government took over govt. The road still remains non navigable between Ekwulobia and Orlu. Locals living on both sides of the road after Ekwulobia and Orlu have seen shege since then. Hopefully, the road shall be completed now.

I read comments here by my people.

But one certainty: outsiders increasingly associating Imo state with prostitution is sickening.
People from all over Nigeria jam Owerri on frolicking holidays. Sleep with young students is why they come.
Young students are in large quantum, nearing a quarter, or even half of a million, in Owerri, owing to jamming together Fed Unitech, Imo university, Alvan Ikoku, Fed Poly, Fed College of Land Resource Technology in Owerri and nearby Imo state Poly.
But no tertiary education institution in the vast lands of Orlu and Okigwe zones.
The mistake has been made in the past.
Remedial step is: take Imo state university out of Owerri since it has no permanent site yet, and there is little or no university structures built on its site in Owerri.
Why would we watch the university built by Okorocha government in his hometown waste, instead of taking most part of Imo state university to Okorocha’s hometown, as recommended by the last government committee?
Not doing this is condoning the prostitution tag which outsiders hang on the necks of all of us in Imo state.
PoliticsRe: Few Pics From Imo State by Nadio2019: 12:50am On Dec 03, 2020
Owerri urban renewal of Ohakim and Okorocha - endless song.

For only one person in Orlu who the three governors of Imo state from Orlu and Okigwe zones see as political enemy in Orlu Municipal Lga, they have been sinking all the urban development funds of Imo state into Owerri soil since 2007.

One builds in Owerri, the other demolishes. They made urban development of Ekeonumwa and environs to become urban development of Imo state.

Just because of one enemy in Orlu, they punish hundreds of thousands of residents in Orlu.

Cruelty: after rebuilding urban roads demolished and rebuilt by Okorocha in Owerri, it’s now demolish and build traffic circles.
This one cannot even rebuild ONE CENTIMETER of road in Orlu since January 14.

Tufiakwa. Politicians shooting themselves on their feet because of one perceived political enemy.

You are getting it all mixed up. It is not about the people of owerri agreeing. It is about the type of governors imo state have been producing. Once a governor sets out his mind to do something, he will. They stopped okada at post udewenwa- pre ohakim era, and people threatened fire and brim stone. But they achieved it. Ohakim stopped street trading. Rochas stopped Keke(which looked impossible) and introduced bus Imo.
So it's not about owerri people to agree to a regional system. Owerri is just one out of many LGA's in imo state
Bros, you might not have been around when people of Owerri zone fought former governor Okorocha to near comatose because Okorocha said his government was locating Imo state university out from Owerri to Ideato area?
Owerri did same to Udenwa and Ohakim.

Alas, Owerri natives profit from house rents of the nearly 300,000 students of all tertiary education institutions in Imo state located in Owerri. The people don’t give a damn about others they share Imo state with - that’s the worst. If they do, they would be asking those governors to look beyond Owerri urban development.

But many of us not from Owerri hate to receive this insult that Owerri, our Imo state capital, is home of prostitution. Owerri allowed the prostitution as its people clutch tight to the too many tertiary education institutions in Owerri where these hundreds of thousands of students are.

You don't know the power a governor in Nigeria wields.
They are not just serious about it. The people won't do 'jack'. After all there are so many unimaginable things that have been done to the citizens and it all ended in beer palours
But in this situation where Imo has been having governors since 2007 till today who see one enemy in Orlu, thus because of one enemy, they deny hundreds of thousands of residents in Orlu what the town deserves from government; and Owerri celebrating the situation - it’s hard to see any redistribution of institutions and amenities concentrated in Owerri to other towns in Imo state. These governors can’t even initiate new institutions and amenities outside Owerri area.

Don't generalize by saying the last thing owerri people will want is a regional at enugu.

It may interest you to know that an average imo man would love to have the type of governors enugu produce than theirs. (From 1999 till date)
But Owerri people have been enjoying the fun with governors like Ohakim, Okorocha and Uzodinma who think that urban development in Imo state is all about state capital.

Imo may never get governors like Enugu because the foundation for the type of governance in Imo state has been deeply established - governance of state capital; Owerri people celebrate, sell a plot of land for millions of Naira, train as many kids as possible in the many universities and polytechnics scattered every corner of Owerri zone. So how can Owerri man agree to return to Enugu as regional headquarters?

You are not totally right.
State Government will not do all the development for you considering the realities on ground. But what we are saying is this; that they should create opportunities for development to thrive. Such opportunities include..
- Relocating some state institutions to those regions
- there is also nothing wrong if he sets up a governors office (anex) in okigwe. It is doable. Infact the state legislators can resolve that ceremonial duties be done in okigwe then office duties in owerri or vice versa. There is no how it won't develop

That's same reason I advocate for more federal presence in this part of the country, because we have the human resources to develop anywhere without the government. What we need is just opportunities
Any day any Imo state governor talks about removing one or two tertiary education institutions from Owerri to Orlu as you suggested, the people of Owerri senatorial district may prepare to set Imo state ablaze that day.

There are rotting university facilities in Orlu, but a School for the Mentally and Physically handicapped is all that’s allowed in Orlu since Adam.

Even the teaching hospital in Orlu has been sabotaged to death bed by people who believe that all govt development institutions must be in Owerri state capital.

Why won’t Owerri believe in Nigeria? Any town which consumed the development funds meant for development of 3 to 4 urban centers of the state must believe in one Nigeria.

Nigeria buttered the bread of Owerri and Owerri people.

In 1976 when Imo state was created, there were little differences in the levels of urban development between Owerri, Orlu and Okigwe.

Owerri lobbied or watched all 6 government universities and polytechnics in Imo state located in Owerri - no consideration for Orlu and Okigwe.

We seriously need a regional system of Government where each region manage their resources. Imagine a functional international airport in this region with resource control(favourable economic policies).

Now we know politicians are the same in every region. But don't you think each region can be more United on their own to protest a bad leadership of their own, rather than the leadership at the center?. Yes we can't rule out corruption which is not just a Nigerian thing but to an extent, favourable economic policies can go a long way.
The last thing Owerri people will agree to is return to regional government system with headquarters at Enugu.

Owerri people enjoy Imo state reduced by confidence men governors to become only Owerri capital territory.
