IKARE, in Akoko North East area of Ondo State, was turned into a war arena on Tuesday, when a -25-member armed robbery gang invaded it, killing no fewer than 21 persons including eight policemen, one undergraduate, two secondary school pupils and five bankers.

Residents of the town cried uncontrollably as they raced to the scenes of tragedy to know the identities of those killed.

The robbers target was the bullion van of one of the old generation banks conveying N25m to the branch of the bank in Ikare.

But they also had plan B, that is, rob four other banks. First, they decided to go on shooting spree killing people indiscriminately to create fear in the town.

In a commando style, the robbers, said to have been dressed in MOPOL uniform, on arrival in the town at about 3pm on the ill-fated day, headed straight to a police station along Ikare/Owo Road, killed four policemen on duty and wounded four others.

The manner of their operation showed that they did their home work properly and knew when to strike.

A police source said: “The robbers used general purpose machine guns, improvised explosive devices and other sophisticated weapons and came in large number and syndicated themselves.”

Sunday Vanguard gathered that the robbers ended up robbing five different banks located along Banking Road in Jubilee area of Ikare.

Their dressing reportedly deceived security men at the entrance of the banks.

The security men, according to sources, thought they were in the bank to transact business only to later discover that they were robbers.

For over one hour, the robbers operated unhindered. Infact, the entire town was held hostage.

Two middle aged men, said to be graduates operating commercial motorcycle, popularly known as Okada, were shot dead in front of the police station where they had gone to ‘bail’ their motorcycles earlier seized by some policemen at a check point.

Some of those feared killed were transacting business inside the banking hall and the ATM of one of the attacked banks while majority of others killed had no connection with any of the banks but were killed for the fun of it because the robbers failed to rob the bullion van with N25m.

An unspecified amount of money were reportedly carted away by the robbers in the five banks which they bombed with dynamite and rocket launchers to gain entry.

An unconfirmed source said a prophet in one of the white garment churches, who was conducting a spiritual bath for a female member, was killed by the bullets of the robbers.

Gory sight of those killed littered the streets of the town.

A report said a man, who lost his wife during child birth, was shot dead with his son while they were coming from the child’s school.

Worried by the nature of the robbery, Governor Olusegun Mimiko drafted all the security chiefs in the state to Ikare to assess the situation.

Mimiko expressed concern about the sophistication of the weapons used by the robbers.

Also, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon Gbenga Elegbeleye, who is from the area, said the town was mourning.

Elegbeleye put the figure of those killed at 21.

At the weekend, commercial and business activities remained completely paralysed in the ancient town.

All the banks in Ikare shut their doors to customers.

When Sunday Vanguard visited the town at the weekend, the police station attacked by the robbers was riddled with bullets while many of the shops located around the banks affected had bullet holes on the walls and the iron doors.

One eyewitness, Kayode Ajala, said that the robbers operated as if they were on war front.

According to him, the robbers must have done their home work before the operation as all the major roads were strategically manned by them to ward off any security intervention that may halt their operation.

Guns, he claimed, were booming from the four corners of the town indicating that they were strategically positioned.

Sunday Vanguard learnt that the robbers came in two Volkswagen Golf vehicles and a bus wearing MOPOL uniform.

Those reportedly killed included school children heading home after school as they were caught in the sporadic shooting of the robbers.

Sunday Vanguard learnt that after the robbery, the robbers escaped through Iboropa Road to Edo State.

Corpses of the policemen and other victims which littered the streets were packed into pick up vans and deposited at the General Hospital, Ikare.

Meanwhile, tension mounted in the town at the weekend as a result of the killings.

The robbery incident is the second within two years.

The first was in 2013 when a robbery was carried out at night by a gang of armed robbers.

The robbery that year resulted in the closure of banks in Ikare for several months.

Infact the bank building that was robbed then was abandoned by the management of the bank and a new one built.

Ironically, the same bank was one of the five attacked by robbers on Tuesday.

The havoc caused by the robbers shook Ondo State Police Command to its foundation, but has vowed to smoke the robbers from their hiding places.

According to Punch, Oyedokun made a challenging claim January 10 while speaking in Yoruba at the launch of campaign by the PDP candidate in Osun Central Senatorial District.

According to the official, Buhari, who is running on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), did not deserve the votes of Nigerians, especially those residing in the South-West.

Which was reasoned by the human rights records of the former military Head of State.

He warned young Nigerian against picking Buhari, based on the historical data.

“Even if they want to pick somebody from the North, it shouldn’t be Buhari. Most of you who are below 40 years may not really know how he dealt with Nigerians when he was the Head of State.

“Buhari jailed (the late Chief) Bola Ige, he jailed Chief Bisi Akande, he jailed the late Adekunle Ajasin and others who did nothing wrong. Although, I have not seen Akande at his rally.

“Some died in detention while being detained by Buhari and he did not allow their children to bury them. Is this the kind of person Nigerians want to vote in as their president? He will be more brutal if he ever gets back into power and that is why we must not vote for him.”

Jonathan, unlike his opponent, has demonstrated respect to democratic values while in the office and therefore deserves a second term, said Oyedokun.

“President Goodluck Jonathan is a civil and humane leader who has been performing despite the challenges before him. You cannot compare the two of them, President Jonathan is far better than Buhari. This Buhari will do worse than he did then, if he is voted into power.”

Supporting his colleague, the chairman of the PDP in the state, Alhaji Gani Olaoluwa, expressed confidence that Jonathan, familiar with the problems of the nation, should remain the country leader.
A month before the major voting, which will determine the President for the next 4 years, the war of words between Jonathan and Buhari sides is getting more and more intense.

The APC candidate said Saturday that choosing Jonathan would be a mistake that would land Nigeria in trouble.

On many official occasions the opposition party claimed that the country needs change and vowed to bring ones if elected.

Your Excellency,
Please forgive me for writing you through this medium. I can imagine how busy you must be, especially at this time that the elections are by the corner. With the many gatekeepers you have, if I posted the letter, the chance of your ever reading it can be imagined. I don’t even know if NIPOST is still working. Do you know, sir? Since I am not a governor, a party chairman, an oba, a minister, a man of God, etc, I reckon that your gate keepers will be infuriated that I even had the effrontery to address a letter to you.


I can imagine one of them reacting in anger: Who this Tony Okoroji think him be sef? Who told him that he can send a letter to the C-in C, the president of the largest black nation on earth?’ They would have torn my letter into a thousand shreds and thrown the shreds into a trash can. Please believe me; I could not control the desperate urge to reach you and express myself, dear leader. Honestly, I have become worried that your gatekeepers are behaving like they own you; they are the only ones who love you and that you should listen to them only. It is a lie! The truth is that there are millions of us in this country who genuinely think that you are an ok guy and wish you well.

I hope sir that you will be kind enough to tell those guys of yours not to call the security people to teach me a hot lesson for this my foolishness. You know that you rule over a large country, in fact the most populous in Africa. In this very large country, we are made up of all kinds; the brilliant, prophets, seers, 419ers, magicians, the foolish, etc. If by any chance, you do not like anything I have written in this letter, for the sake of my children, forgive me and just say to yourself, ‘he is just one of those foolish Nigerians that I rule.’

I am really scared of your guys. They might even say to you that just like in Fr. Mbaka’s case, Ngige has given me N800 million to write this letter. Sorry sir, with oil price dancing sekem-sekem, is there still that kind of money left in Nigeria? If Ngige has that kind of cash to throw around, then things can’t be that bad. My boss, if you want, you can investigate this: I have never met Mbaka. I do not know Ngige. I have no business with Buhari or Osinbajo or Tinubu or Amaechi or even OBJ or any of the rascals who keep heaping insults on you. My president, you are the only one I know. I swear, nobody has given meshishi.

Before I go any further, let me join others to express my condolence on the recent passing on of your dear sister. May the Almighty receive her soul and give you the fortitude to bear the loss.

Your excellency, my dear president, I love my country with all my heart but I am also a very proud Igbo man. People say that Igbos do not support their own. That is not quite true. The truth is that Igbos don’t like to be made a fool of. You can bear witness to the fact that four years ago, when your handlers reminded everyone that your full name is Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan and you put on the red cap for which we are known, Igbos came out in droves to support you. You were considered their brother. Our people voted for you en masse.

Your gatekeepers might not tell you but the joke around town is that once the election was over, Azikiwe disappeared from your name, the red cap disappeared from your wardrobe and the black bowler hat returned. You came back to being a 100 percent Ijaw man and Igbos were left alone to continue to bear their many burdens.

A few days to the last Christmas, I was stuck in a bad traffic jam on the Niger bridge between Asaba and Onitsha, the same bridge built about 50 years ago by the government led by a Muslim man, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. Many times we have been promised a second Niger bridge to reduce our pain. Mr. President sir, I am not an ethnic jingoist but just put yourself in our shoes. How do you think we feel? For six years, an Azikiwe has been in charge at Aso Rock and the more we look, the less we see the second Niger bridge or anything else of real value!

Some say that the Igbos have no king. Maybe not in the same sense that other people believe that a certain child of God was born to rule over them. We believe in hard work and merit. We are certain that if there is fairness and a level playing field, the Igbo man will thrive anywhere. With the Igbos, you have to earn your kingship. The late Zik of Africa and Owelle of Onitsha, the great Nnamdi Azikiwe whose name you took, earned his kingship. Go around much of Igboland today, almost everyone seriously seeking office will not just put out a poster but one carrying his photograph and that of the late Ikemba Nnewi, Eze Igbo, Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu. Ojukwu was an Igbo King.

You may therefore understand my horror when it was announced last week that one Femi Fani Kayode has been appointed your campaign spokesman. I am usually a very tolerant guy but I instantly felt like vomiting. Femi Fani Kayode?! Is this not the same guy that gleefully went before the world to claim that he had slept with Her Excellency, Bianca Ojukwu, your ambassador and wife of the revered Igbo King, Eze Guburugburu, Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu? If your excellency does not know, what this guy did was to slap the face of every self-respecting Igbo man. It was sacrilege. I find it incredulous that in the whole of Nigeria, they could not find you a better person than this man who goes about boasting about the women he has gone to bed with. Mr. President sir, are you going to send this man to Igboland to speak on your behalf? Tufiakwa! Mbah! Whoever foisted that decision on you is not your friend. He does not want the Igbos or any other discerning Nigerian to vote for you.

I don’t care what anybody says, you are an inspiration to millions of poor people across Africa. For a guy who had no shoes to go on to get a BSc, MSc and PhD and swiftly move on to be a deputy governor, governor, vice president and president, the office over which many in Nigeria have lost their lives, is nothing but awesome. This is a country where there are hundreds of thousands of young people who can only dream about a university degree not because they are not smart but because their country is not smart.

Your excellency, you know that the last election was a cake walk. Please do not listen to any of these your many hangers on who tells you that the situation is still the same. Nigerians are in no mood for a phone call and ‘I love you’ this coming valentine day election. The love has soured. The mood has changed a lot. I am afraid. I don’t know how you are going to pull this iron out of the fire. Have I forgotten that your name is Goodluck? No sir! It is just that this time, you may need all the luck you were born with and more.

Mr. President, sir! How can I get so close to you and my life does not change? I am sure you will think I am not a true Nigerian if I close this this letter without asking the all-important question: Anything for the boys?

Okoroji’s letter has made it increasingly clear that Ndigbos are tired of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s government.

Prominent former militant and Founder of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF) Alhaji Asari Dokubo, today disclosed that he is no more a Nigerian citizen.

Dokubo, who was speaking on the popular Youth-inspired show on Channels Televison, Rubbin’ Minds said Nigeria has not provided him the atmosphere to flourish and bring his dreams and aspirations to life.

“I am a businessman. My business is mostly centred around education. I have about four schools.
“I have crèche , nursery and secondary school, King Amachree International School in Cotonou, Republic of Benin. I have King Amachree Automobile and ICT Academy and I have King Amachree Arts Academy and King Amachree Sports Academy.
“Its only education that I do. By March, King Amachree African University will come on board.
His opined that his passion for education, despite not completing his own university education, was because the quality of in Nigeria was very inadequate as he believes “it just prepares people to speak English, to write and to make noise.”

“Any student who graduates from my school is skilled,” he said.

When asked by the Host of the show, Ebuka Uchendu-Obi, why he has a university in the Republic of Benin rather than building it in Nigeria.

“I don’t see myself as a Nigerian and I cannot establish a school in an enemy territory,” he said.
“For over 30 years I’ve been at loggerheads with the Nigerian Government, first as a Student Union leader, then President of National Union of Rivers State Students participating in student unionism.
“I have been an enemy of the Nigerian state, so to say. Up till today, there’s a treason trial hanging on my head and you cannot just put your business in an environment where one person would get up and say ‘I close down this business’.
“I want somewhere where I can express myself and flourish and that’s what I’m doing. We started small but gradually we are becoming bigger and bigger.”
A former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, ‘Gen’ Reuben Wilson, recently denied the endorsement of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari in next month’s election.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, President Goodluck Jonathan’s younger sister, Mrs. Nancy Jonathan-Olei, is dead, the deceased died on Sunday at a hospital in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

She was said to have died during a brief illness.
The three-paragraphaph statement read,

“President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan announces with deep sorrow, the pa’s’sing away of his beloved junior sister, Mrs. Nancy Jonathan-Olei.“Mrs. Jonathan-Olei pa’s’sed away earlier today at a hospital in Yenagoa after a brief illness. She was 52 years old.

“Burial arrangements will be announced later by the family.”
