South Korea and the United States on Thursday completed the deployment of a US missile defence system to counter North Korean threats, sparking demonstrations by residents and a diplomatic protest from Beijing.

A convoy of US military trucks carrying four launchers for the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system made their way through an activists’ blockade at a former golf course in the southern county of Seongju.

Some 8,000 riot police were mobilised to help the convoy get through the 400 protestors staging a sit-in. Many of the demonstrators had locked themselves into place with chains, while others had used tractors and pickup trucks as barriers.

Police shattered windows to break into the vehicles and tow them away, Yonhap news agency said. About 20 people were injured in subsequent scuffles, it added.

The system’s powerful radar and two launchers had already been deployed, infuriating Beijing, which fears it could compromise its own missile capabilities. It has previously retaliated against Seoul with unofficial economic sanctions.

The installation of the rest of the battery was delayed, ostensibly on environmental grounds, by South Korea’s new liberal President Moon Jae-In.

But Prime Minister Lee Nak-Yon said Thursday the THAAD deployment was a “difficult yet inevitable decision” Seoul had to make because of North Korea’s growing nuclear and missile threats.

North Korea on Thursday pledged to take “powerful counter measures” to respond to U.S. pressure or any new sanctions against it over its missile programme, accusing Washington of wanting war.

Pyongyang’s pledge, made in a statement by its delegation to an economic forum in Russia’s Far East, came after the U.S. said it wanted the UN Security Council to impose an oil embargo on North Korea.

The same statement also accused South Korea and Japan of using the Russian forum to play “dirty politics,’’ saying the event was meant to be about discussing economic cooperation in the region and not about criticising its missile programme.

Russian President Vladimir Putin told the same forum on Thursday he thought the North Korea crisis would not escalate into a large-scale conflict involving nuclear weapons, predicting that common sense would prevail.

The Police Command in Enugu State said it had commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the alleged drowning of three children in a well at Ezeama.

Ezeama is a village in Ohodo community in Igboetiti Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, in a statement on Thursday in Enugu, gave the names of the victims as Chibenyi Ugwuda, Chinedu Ugwuda and Chukwunora Ugwuda.

Amaraizu said that the children, who were less than three years, got drowned during the weekend.

The PPRO said, “The command’s operatives have commenced full-scale investigations with a view to finding out how their death was brought about and circumstances surrounding it.

“It was, however, gathered that the children had allegedly fallen into a well at Ezeama village of Ohodo community in Igboetiti Local Government Area, and died”.

The Abia State House of Assembly Speaker,  Chikwendu Kalu, on Saturday, allegedly ordered some policemen in the state to shoot officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps on patrol.

“The driver reversed the vehicle and it was discovered that a woman in the passenger seat in front, is an officer of the Department of State Services attached to the governor’s wife.
“The DSS officer ran towards the officer who stopped the vehicle, held him by uniform and dragged him to the ground, accusing him of hitting their vehicle. a reliable source said.

The source added that the speaker’s wife allegedly joined the policemen to beat the official.

“One of them called the speaker whose village is nearby. He then came with some policemen. He ordered them to shoot the armless officers who were sitting inside the patrol vehicle and mercilessly beat up the team leader.

“The policemen also forcefully opened the patrol vehicle and went away with the battery. They left the team leader and the other officials that were shot on the road. Other road users helped them to the hospital,” said the source.

The FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, confirmed the incident. He said the case had been “reported to the commissioner of police in the state for further investigations and that it won’t deter the FRSC from saving lives on the highways.”

When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to the speaker Mr. Okey Chikwendu promised to confirm the incident and get back to our correspondent. He had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.

Hospital cleaner steals placenta, eats it for shiny skin.

A hospital cleaner has stolen the placenta of a newly-born child, cooked and ate it, in a bid to improve her skin tone.

The parents of the newborn had asked the hospital authorities to keep the placenta because they wanted to be the ones to dispose it.

However, the hospital did not seem to understand their request and alleged to have treated the placenta as a medical waste a day after the baby was born.

The doctors told the worried parents that one of the hospital cleaners picked the placenta from the trash bin and took it home.

When the cleaner was confronted, the cleaner admitted that she took home the placenta and made a soup of it, and ate it afterwards

The baby’s father said he and his wife wanted to bury the placenta in their home town in line with their village’s culture.

But the cleaner has frustrated all that.

The hospital had instructed the couple to come back for the placenta later, as it would have to be sent for inspection.

The new parents visited the hospital two days later and were shocked to find that the placenta had disappeared.

“The doctor says we took it and obviously we didn’t. Then we asked who they gave it to and the doctor replied saying a cleaner took it away,” said the baby’s dad.

When the cleaner was confronted by the baby’s mother. She admitted to me she had already made soup with it and eaten it.”

The family were furious and shouted at members of staff at the hospital.

The Medical Director explained that they did not understand that the couple wanted to take home the placenta.

The MD however agreed that the incident had revealed a faulty system in the safe-keeping of placentas.

“There is a lack of education with hospital staff on medical values,” he admitted.

When the police were called in, the parties agreed to settle the issue amicably.

Human placentas is said to have high nutritious value, and it is believed in some cultures to stop post-natal depression.

It is also claimed to cure premature ejaculation for men.
