Religion / World's Most Glamorous Public Holiday: What Made Xmas So Thick? by naijaparrots(m): 4:16pm On Dec 23, 2012
It is no doubt that xmas is world's most glamorous public holiday. This is attested true even among those who do not believe in the significance of Dec. 25th - moslems and many christians who do not see the date as the true historical date of Jesus' birth.

Many christians know for truth that Jesus was not born and could not have been born on Dec. 25th but many, the world over, celebrate the day like no other.

What really makes christmas thick?

Celebrities / It Is "False": Don Jazzy Dismisses Rumoured Reconciliatory Moves With D'banj by naijaparrots(m): 3:31pm On Aug 20, 2012
Following rumours making the rounds that there are moves by Kanye West to reconcile him with D'Banj, Don Jazzy has dispelled the rumour dismissing it as "False".

Don Jazzy took to his twitter handle @DonJazzy while responding to a follower's enquiry if the story was true or not.

City People magazine had reported the story in its cover page alleging that Kanye West is unhappy with the split between the duo and is reported to have told D'Banj point-blank to make amends with Don Jazzy or risk being dropped from the G-O-O-D Music label.

NYSC / Ordeals Of National Youth Service Corps Members In Sokoto Camp by naijaparrots(m): 1:56am On Jul 12, 2012
am presently doing the compulsory NYSC orientation in Sokoto state at Government Technical College, Farfaru camp.

The state of the camp is a travesty of a camp befitting of a nigerian graduate. There are no basic facilities: no water, no light in the rooms, we bathe outside, no toilets - the corpers do what is now popularly known as 'shotput'.

The accomodation is nothing to write home about. We sleep on the ground with matresses weaker than d common mats we know. In short we are suffering here & no one seems to be doing anything about it.

We have been told there's a permanent camp which has been undergoing construction for ages now.

Please the authorities should do something about this. The national assembly should see that nigerian graduates are camped in conducive environment because Sokoto camp is inhabitable even to prisoners.

Celebrities / Who Is Nigeria's Richest Artiste(s)? D'banj, 2face Or Psquare? by naijaparrots(m): 5:55pm On Jun 01, 2012
Since the duo of PSquare acquired a private jet I have been thinking who could be said to be Nigeria's richest artiste(s)
You will agree with me that the contest is strictly between D'Banj, 2Face and the duo of PSquare.

I discussed this with a friend, and he said he would want me to add Femi Kuti to the list. The only issue with Femi Kuti is that his wealth is shrouded in secrecy. The guy does not make noise about his wealth and as such might not be easily estimated. Hence, I have not included his name here.

PSquare
Just last week, the duo of PSquare acquired a private jet. Before then, I did not know that the guys could afford such a luxury. Infact, not long ago the guys were said to be having problems with their landlord who was said to have given them a quit notice. Of course, they have since built a mansion they call "Square Ville". They have now entered into a distribution deal with Universal Music Group for the distribution of the CD's, DVD's globally. No doubt, they are set to CHOP more money.

2Face
2Face or 2Baba has been the most consistent Nigerian artiste. Indeed, he is the last man standing among his peers. A few months back, the rumour mills had it that he paid the sum of N10m each to Pero and Sunbo - his other baby mamas - as settlement before going ahead to marry Annie Macaulay. He has since opened a multi-million naira supermarket for Annie.

D'Banj
The co-founder and 'bread winner' of the defunct Mo'Hits Records is no doubt wealthy. In one of the leaked mails during the feud between him and Don Jazzy, he described how he was virtually the one responsible for buying expensive vehicles for all the Mo'Hits' crew, including Don Jazzy who he said he bought a bentley for. Also in a particular track - "Mogbono felifeli" - he made mention of being paid N10m a week. He was probably referring to a deal with the mobile phone company - globacom. He has since moved on in the international scene with his Oliver Twist's video occupying, at the last time I checked, the #9 position in the UK national chart.

Now, the question - who is the richest among these three?

The poll has already started, and D'banj is occupying the top position, closely followed by 2Face with PSquare coming a distant last position.

Education / Much Ado About A President's Broadcast: Clueless Leaders Clueless Followers by naijaparrots(m): 7:57pm On May 29, 2012
“In a democracy, the people get the government they deserve” - Alexis de Tocqueville

The presidential broadcast marking 2012 Democracy Day has come and gone however, as it has become the norm that any time the President speaks, there MUST be angry reactions this is no exception.

The President’s Democracy Day Broadcast has 71 paragraphs with each majorly treating separate issues. The renaming of the hitherto University of Lagos (UNILAG) as Moshood Abiola University (MAU) which was contained in the very last paragraph (71st) paragraph is the bone of contention this time.

So controversial it is that many Nigerians who did not listen “LIVE” to the President’s Broadcast would believe, thanks to the unnecessary noise, that all the President said during the one-hour Broadcast was the announcement of the renaming of UNILAG.

I am deeply disturbed by the unnecessary hullabaloo that this issue has generated. For God’s sake, Mr. President talked for one hour and it is shameful that one thing that we could pick out from the whole speech is the issue of the nomenclature of an educational institution.

Before I go on, let me quickly say that I am not a fan of President Goodluck Jonathan. His one year in office is a huge disappointment. While many people believe it is too early to crucify him, a sentiment I partially share, the president has not done anything substantial to inspire in Nigerians any ounce of hope of better days ahead. A popular Yoruba adage has it that “if it takes you 20 years to prepare for madness, how long will it take you to enter a market Unclad?"

Additionally, the President has a great work to do to convince me that he is not a corrupt man. Many of his ministers have been manipulated in many corruption scandals but he has not asked any of them to step aside pending conclusion of investigations let alone sack them. That does not portray the action of a serious man who wants to fight corruption.

That said, and now back to the President’s Broadcast, the President concluded the Broadcast by announcing the change of nomenclature of UNILAG to MAU. Yes he changed the name of a federal institution. And so? What on earth is a big deal in that action? Is he the first President to do that?

Let me refresh our minds a bit. The present Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ife was formerly University of Ife, Osun State. The present Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Akwa was an offshoot of the defunct Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH). The present Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria was formerly known as the University of Northern Nigeria. These three are just a few of the many examples that abound in our society. I am therefore at a loss over the rationale or appropriateness of the noise this one has generated as if what the president has done is something out of the blues.

While I cannot fathom why the president should be hated this much by the very people he is governing (that is not my business anyway – his media people should work on that) I think we should not hate or oppose his actions just because we hate him. I am appalled that this issue of opposition to President Jonathan and his government is deteriorating to the stage that any action or decision taken by the President will be opposed without any efforts to study the pros and cons of the action.

We are not in an animal kingdom. God did not give us the power of reasoning for nothing. He did in order to... Click link to read full article

Religion / Scandals In The Holy City: Pope's Butler Arrested; Vatican's Bank President Sack by naijaparrots(m): 8:27am On May 27, 2012
ROME (AP) — As it turns out, the butler did it. At least that's who the papal police force believes is responsible for the recent leaks of personal papal correspondence that has shed unwanted light on power struggles and alleged corruption within the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church.
Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said Friday that the internal police had arrested a man who worked in the Vatican on suspicion of pilfering and leaking private documents belonging to Pope Benedict XVI. The unauthorized release of private papal documents is unprecedented, at least in recent memory, piercing the veil of legendary Vatican secrecy.

Italian news reports identified the suspect as Paolo Gabriele, a butler in the papal household who, as a personal servant of Pope Benedict, would have had direct access to his belongings.

Benedict said he was "saddened and struck" by the news of the arrest, according to news reports.
The arrest followed several months of revelations of letters to the pope and others, written by various figures, that indicate conflict among the factions within Vatican City's massive walls.

Documents that refer to alleged corruption and misuse of funds in Vatican City management, as well as divergent views on efforts to clean up the Vatican bank, were reproduced in a book published last week by journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, titled "Sua Santita: Le Carte Segrete di Benedetto XVI" ("His Holiness: The Secret Papers of Benedict XVI"wink.

Nuzzi, who first revealed the secret correspondence in January, would not say in a television interview Friday whether Gabriele was the person who passed him copies of the documents.

The arrest came a day after the president of the Vatican bank, the Institute of Religious Works, or IOR, was shown the door by its lay oversight committee.

The Vatican issued an unusually blunt statement Thursday saying that overseers unanimously agreed that Italian banker Ettore Gotti Tedeschi had not carried out "the primary functions of his office" and that deteriorating governance at the bank had generated "increasing worries."

Gotti Tedeschi told Italian news media that to defend himself he would be forced to say "ugly things" and that he would instead hold back because of his regard for Benedict.

The authenticity of the papal documents was essentially confirmed when officials strongly condemned the publication of confidential correspondence, prompting the formation of two commissions to find the culprit, including one composed of cardinals.

In many cases, the letters illustrate conflicts with the second-most-powerful man in the Vatican, Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.
They indicate that Bertone clashed with Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, who was assigned by Benedict to govern the Vatican city-state and clean it up but who was reassigned against his will last year to the top diplomatic post in Washington.

The letters also call attention to an alleged divergence of opinion between Bertone and Gotti Tedeschi on the IOR's path to greater transparency, undertaken in recent years after a massive scandal in the 1980s that tied the bank to the fraudulent bankruptcy of a large Italian bank and the associated intrigue, which included homicide, Mafia connections and secret accounts.

Gotti Tedeschi was called in nearly three years ago to guide the IOR in its efforts to get on the "white list" of financial institutions that adhere to strict international rules of transparency designed to combat the flow of laundered money to terrorists or drug traffickers.

A meeting between officials from the Vatican and Moneyval, a European body charged with assessing the transparency of banks, is scheduled for July.
