Foreign Affairs / New York Is Suing Google, Instagram, Snapchat, Etc For "Addicting" Kids by NaijaphiliaBlog: 8:24pm On Feb 21 |
The City of New York in the USA has become the latest government to legally pursue big tech companies for purportedly getting children addicted to their platforms. On Monday 12 February 2024, several New York City agencies, including the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Department of Education, raised a lawsuit against Google, Instagram, Snapchat, Meta, and TikTok, accusing them of “fueling the nationwide youth mental health crisis.” The city consequently charged them with public nuisance and negligence. New York City says that these platforms’ have design features – inclusive of recommendation algorithms and likes – which addict children to their services and as a result manipulate them into spending more and more time online. The lawsuit now joins a growing surge of legal proceedings from state and local governments taking aim at tech platforms for allegedly addictive attributes which are deceptive and harmful to children. Many state governments also sued Meta last autumn, for allegedly misleading the public about the detriment its services could cause to children. Politics / Re: Why Do Nations Borrow When They Can Easily Print Money? by NaijaphiliaBlog: 1:43am On Feb 15 |
Kaycee9242: Actually, alphaNomega is technically correct. The USA can print money (and has actually done so) with minimal to zero inflationary damage to their economy. The question then is WHY? The reason is simple: The US dollar has been internationalized as a medium of exchange. Just think about all the millions of Africans, Asians, Europeans etc who are saving, investing and even spending US dollars - without having ever stepped on USA soil. In essence, the inflationary consequences of the USA printing money are exported to other countries! 1 Like 1 Share |

Education / Re: Why Do Nigeria Borrow Money Whereby They Can Prints More Money. by NaijaphiliaBlog: 11:00pm On Feb 12 |
Idamond: PRINTING VS BORROWING: WHY NOT? Afterall, currency na just pieces of paper! This is the reason that ordinary citizens, during times of crisis, always wonder why government doesn't simply print more currency. Economists, however, have always warned against the impulse to print more money. If government creates too much money, people suddenly end up with a lot more in their hands; Consumers then suddenly demand more goods/ services, whereas supply would be unable to meet the sudden sharp rise in demand. This sudden higher demand thus pushes prices up, which (in the worst-case scenario) results in hyperinflation. FOR INSTANCE: In Zimbabwe in year 2008 alone, inflation increased to 231,000,000% because the government attempted to solve the country's crisis by printing paper money. A sweet which previously cost 1 Zimbabwean dollar became 231 million Zimbabwean dollars a year later! By April 2009, Zimbabwe had to stop printing its currency and started using currencies from other countries. ILLUSTRATIONS A. The first photo below shows Zimbabwean banknotes ranging from 10 dollars to 100 billion dollars that were printed within a one-year period (the magnitude of the currency scalars indicates the extent of the hyperinflation). B. The chart below the photo shows Zimbabwe's year 2007 inflation of almost 25,000%.
