Education / ALUTA THINGZ: University Of Abuja ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike by NaijaphiliaBlog: 3:26pm On May 02
University of Abuja branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on an indefinite strike action, to draw attention to issues bothering the union.

The union announced this decision on Thursday 02 May 2024 at the end of its congress which was held at the Permanent Site of the institution.

Chairman of the University’s ASUU branch, Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh, says the union has resolved to embark on a total and indefinite strike with immediate effect, in order to draw government’s attention to issues in the university.

BACKSTORY

The union had in March 2024 rejected the advertisement placed in national dailies for the position of vice-chancellor by the management of the school.

Dr. Sylvanus Ugoh said at the time that the union would resist it “within the ambit of the law” and also warned “intending applicants to steer clear until due process is adhered to.”

Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah has been the vice-chancellor of the school since 01 July 2019. Before then, he was the pioneer VC of Kwara State University for 10 years, from 2009 to 2019.

Ugoh affirmed that only the Governing Council of the school has the right to appoint a substantive vice-chancellor.

He said the advertorial contravened relevant laws and accused the Nigerian government of contributing negatively to the smooth-running of the school and others, through its actions and inactions.

Politics / BREAKING! Opay, 3 Other Fintechs Pause Account Opening On CBN Order by NaijaphiliaBlog: 9:07am On Apr 30
Opay, Kuda Bank, Moniepoint, and Palmpay have all paused opening of new accounts, sequel a directive from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) during the week that ended 27 April 2024.

This follows the earlier blocking of 1,146 bank accounts involved in unauthorised forex dealings on Wednesday 24 April 2024 by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Analysis of the blocked accounts indicates that only 10% are with fintechs while 90% are commercial bank accounts.

An attempt by NaijaphiliaBlog on 30 April 2024 to open a new account with Opay, after downloading the App, returned the message in the screenshot below:

It was also not possible to open new accounts on any of the other affected fintech Apps.

However, we observed that customer deposits and other banking activities are running normally.

In recent months, fintechs have faced increasing scrutiny over their account opening processes. November 2023, the CBN implemented new Know-Your-Customer (KYC) rules for all financial institutions that seemed to target fintechs.

The current directive to pause account opening is linked to ongoing audit of KYC processes of the fintechs, according to one executive at one of the fintechs, who also described the pause as “temporary.”

Crime / ODD NEWS: Fuel Station Forces Customers To Buy Meat Pies Before Getting Petrol by NaijaphiliaBlog: 2:20pm On Apr 29
A TotalEnergies filling station located at Igando in Lagos State has allegedly been forcing its customers to buy meat pies before being allowed to buy fuel.

The odd piece of news came to light via a video that trended on Twitter during the weekend of 28 April 2024.

The viral video shows several customers with jerry cans and another buyer in an SUV waiting their turn to purchase fuel.

The recorder of the video could be heard complaining about the abnormal occurrence.

“I don’t understand what is happening at this Total filling station. How on earth will I be asked to buy meat pie before I buy fuel? What sort of rubbish is this? Is this place open for meat pie or for fuel?”

TotalEnergies Nigeria Plc could not be reached for comments/reaction as at the time of filing this story on Sunday 28 April.

Perhaps the station manager simply got fed up having to throw away his carefully-crafted delicious pies?

Anyway, watch the video in link below.

Agriculture / DID YOU KNOW? 60% Of The World’s Uncultivated Arable Land Is In Africa by NaijaphiliaBlog: 11:02pm On Apr 28
Data from the Food and Agriculture Organization shows that Africa has an estimated 60% of the world’s uncultivated land that is suitable for growing crops.

This means that African agribusiness has the potential to generate billions of dollars annually, if the right policies and investments are made.

Towards this end, some countries on the continent are beginning to focus on the agricultural value chain. For example, some of the largest fertilizer manufacturing plants in the world have been established in Nigeria and Morocco.

I need casual factory job in this location

Check out this thread:

Most big companies are frequently in need of casual workers but don't advertise it in newspapers or online.

Check the above thread for companies in your location of interest, then go there physically (or ask your friends/contacts in the area) to check.

The companies usually just paste notices of casual job openings outside their main gate.

Best of luck!
