Crime / Boko Haram Kills Elderly Men Studying Qur’an by NaijaPoint: 8:32pm On Mar 05, 2015
Boko Haram militants have been amassing in the northeast Nigeria town of Gwoza, believed to be the group’s headquarters, killing residents who were unable to flee, a senator and witnesses said Thursday.

A female resident who fled Gwoza on Tuesday and requested anonymity said the insurgents rounded up elderly men who were studying the Koran outside the home of a local cleric.

The men were later executed in front of their wives, the witness told AFP from Yola, capital of neighbouring Adamawa state.

“The Boko Haram men brought out brand new guns from cartons, tested them and shot dead all the men who they forced to lie face down,” she said.

Some of these details were supported by area Senator Ali Ndume, who also confirmed the large build-up of insurgents in Gwoza.

“Boko Haram insurgents have in recent days been converging in Gwoza where they killed many male residents and chased women and children out of the town,” said Ndume.

The group’s leader Abubakar Shekau proclaimed Gwoza part of a caliphate and reclaiming the town that was captured last June would be a huge prize for Nigeria’s military.

Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger have since last month been waging an unprecedented joint offensive against the insurgents, claiming the recapture of several key towns and villages previously under Islamist control.

Ndume speculated that the Islamists were preparing to defend the symbolically important town before an expected military advance, possibly by Chadian troops who are operating in the area with Nigeria’s permission.

The motive for the rebel build-up in Gwoza could not be independently confirmed but witnesses said a large number of residents had also been killed in recent days.

The current population of Gwoza is hard to estimate.

Many people in the town on the Cameroon border fled amid the rebel takeover in June but many others — including those too old or sick to run — stayed behind.

There were also indications that Boko Haram tried to reassure people that it was safe to stay in the town and live under the so-called caliphate.

Experts say Chad’s well-trained army has offered a huge boost to Nigeria in recent weeks as both nations have boasted of major successes against the insurgents.

Chadian President Idriss Deby on Wednesday claimed he knew where Shekau was and called on him to surrender while vowing to “wipe out” the Islamists.

Nigeria is under intense pressure to show progress against Boko Haram ahead of March 28 elections, which had been slated for February but were postponed by six weeks to allow the military more time to pacify the northeast.

Technology Market / Get Iphone 6: The Hottest Phone by NaijaPoint: 9:22pm On Oct 18, 2014
Ever since Apple Computers launched apple Iphone 6, It has made millions of sales due to the features and value. Most of the features in Iphone 6 are yet to appear on many other phones.
iPhone 6
Bigger than bigger
iPhone 6 isn’t simply bigger — it’s better in every way. Larger, yet dramatically thinner. More powerful, but remarkably power efficient. With a smooth metal surface that seamlessly meets the new Retina HD display. It’s one continuous form where hardware and software function in perfect unison, creating a new generation of iPhone that’s better by any measure.
iphone 6
In creating iPhone 6, we scrutinized every element and material. That’s how we arrived at a smooth, continuous form. A thinner profile made possible by our thinnest display yet. And intuitively placed buttons. All made with beautiful anodized aluminum, stainless steel, and glass. It’s a thousand tiny details that add up to something big. Or in this case, two big things: iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
Checking out it's sleek beautiful design, Apples says.
An innovative seamless design.
The first thing you notice when you hold iPhone 6 is how great it feels in your hand. The cover glass curves down around the sides to meet the anodized aluminum enclosure in a remarkable, simplified design. There are no distinct edges. No gaps. Just a smooth, seamless bond of metal and glass that feels like one continuous surface.

Streamlined. Inside and out.
Designing a larger iPhone without making it feel bigger was no small task. It required challenging the idea of “big.” It called for narrowing when the natural inclination was to expand. It meant condensing powerful technologies and making chips smaller and batteries thinner, all while making them more capable. And it meant engineering our thinnest, most advanced Multi‑Touch display. All of which yields a dramatically thin design.

Everything within reach.
By creating iPhone 6 and iOS 8 together, we optimized the software to enhance the physical design. iOS swipe gestures were designed to be more fluid across the seamless form, making it easy to navigate iPhone with one hand. With new features like Reachability you can interact with the larger screen in different ways, too. Simply double touch the Home button and the entire screen shifts down closer to your thumb. And to easily navigate Safari or Mail, swipe left to right across the screen to go backward, or swipe right to left to go forward. With the new continuous surface of iPhone, all your gestures now feel smoother than ever.
We also thought about how you use your iPhone every day and redesigned the buttons to make it even easier to use. Elongated volume buttons are integrated into the thinner profile, outlined to make them effortless to find by touch. And the Sleep/Wake button has a new home on the side of the device to put it comfortably within reach. The result is an experience that’s even more intuitive.

iphone 6
The elements of beautiful design.
To create a larger iPhone that’s extraordinarily light, we pioneered new display technologies. We carefully selected every material. Each detail was meticulously designed, engineered, and crafted until iPhone had an incredibly thin, continuous form. From the anodized aluminum and stainless steel to the curve of the polished glass, iPhone 6 is worth its weight in gold, silver, and space gray.

The camera that changed photos now does the same for video.
More people take more photos with iPhone than with any other camera. And now the iSight camera has a new sensor with Focus Pixels and new video features, like 1080p HD at 60 fps, slo-mo at 240 fps, and time-lapse video mode. So you’ll have more reasons to capture more moments on video, too. Learn more about Cameras

Faster wireless. Far and wide.
iPhone 6 has faster LTE download speeds,* and it supports more LTE bands than any other smartphone so you can roam in more places. And when connected to Wi-Fi, you’ll get up to 3x faster speeds. Learn more about Connectivity

Retina HD display Not just a bigger display. A better display.

The size of the new, higher-resolution Retina HD displays on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus may be the first thing you notice. But what you experience is so much more. With innovations that deliver higher contrast, dual‑domain pixels for more accurate color at wider viewing angles, and an improved polarizer, these are the thinnest, most advanced Multi‑Touch displays we’ve ever made.

Security. Right at your fingertip.
The breakthrough Touch ID technology lets you securely access your iPhone with the perfect password: your fingerprint. You can also use it to approve purchases from iTunes, iBooks, and the App Store without having to enter your password. Learn more about Touch ID

Celebrities / Davido And Other Africa Music Big Names Make AFRIMA 2014 Nominees Listscreen by NaijaPoint: 6:57am On Sep 27, 2014
Davido and other Africa music big names make AFRIMA 2014 nominees listscreen again
The five regions of Africa gave an impressive account of their respective music industry as the 2014 Nominees’ List of the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, was unveiled on September 23, 2014 during a world press conference held at Protea Hotel Leadway, Maryland Estate, Lagos, Nigeria.

Present for the AFRIMA Panel of Jurors at the unveiling event was jury member Mr. Oscar Kidjo, a seasoned music producer, representing West Africa (Benin Republic).

Also representing the International Committee of AFRIMA were: Executive Producer/President, Mike Dada; Director Brand Communication & Sponsorship, MatlouTsotetsi; Chairman, International Media Committee, Steve Ayorinde and Co-Producer/Country Director, Nigeria, Kingsley James. Other attendees included African music industry personalities, heads of partner corporate organisations and music industry stakeholders.

Although popular names in the continental music industry showed up on the highly-anticipated Nominees’ List of the awards project that is rewarding excellence by budding and established music professionals as well as journalists, the nominations of a generous number of emerging African artistes in many award categories threw more excitement into the unveiling event witnessed by local and international press as well as critical stakeholders in the music industry.

Among the well-known African music names on the nominees list are: Mafikizolo (South Africa) 6 nominations, Davido (Nigeria) 6 nominations, Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania) 2 nominations, AmrDiab (Egypt) 2 nominations, Zahara (South Africa) 3 nominations, Angelique Kidjo (Benin Republic) 2 nominations, FallyIpupa (DRC) 1 nomination, Sakordie (Ghana) 1 nomination, Tiwa Savage (Nigeria) 2 nominations, Uhuru (South Africa) 5 nominations and Mi Casa (South Africa) 4 nominations. Leading the budding music acts on AFRIMA Nominees’ List is: TemiDollFace (Nigeria) 4 nominations, others are Wiyaala (Ghana) 3 nominations; Patoranking (Nigeria) 2 nominations; Davina Green (Zimbabwe) 1 nomination and Noura Mint Seymale (Mauritania) 2 nominations, among others.

Heavyweight African music producer, Don Jazzy (Nigeria) made the Africa Producer of the Year category for the song ‘Eminado’ alongside top contenders: Robbie Malinga&Mojela Thebe (South Africa) for ‘Impilo’; Oskido and Shizzi (Nigeria) for ‘Tchelete’; Mikky Me (Nigeria) ‘Down’ and Del’B (Nigeria) for ‘Pull Over’.

Giving details into the criteria by which the nominees list emerged, MatlouTsotetsi explained that the jury panel adhered strictly to the entry submission requirements while being guided by AFRIMA’s core values of FACE IT –Fairness, Authenticity, Creativity, Excellence, Integrity and Transparency.

“The adjudication panel of jurors consisting of experienced names in the continental and global music industry were in Lagos in July to evaluate the submitted works.

The entries which made the laid down criteria and qualified on merit were shortlisted based on their scores and this was sent to our Kenya-based auditors who then tabulated these scores. The result is what we are presenting today”, Ms.Tsotetsi stated.

While 30 of the 33 award categories will be open for voting by the public and AFRIMA Academy of Voters, Mike Dada revealed that recipients of the AFRIMA Legend Award and the Africa Entertainment/Music Journalist Award will be decided by the International Committee of AFRIMA and announced at the main awards ceremony on Sunday, November 9, 2014.

Mike Dada said further that the AFRIMA voting online platform will open on Tuesday, September 30 for the five-week voting process, while encouraging the public, fans and followers of African music to visit the AFRIMA website, www.afrima.org , to view the nominees in the 30 categories of the award and vote for their favourite artiste (s).

For the 2014 edition, the award project opened entries on May 15 and closed the submission of entries on July 21 in the process receiving a staggering total of 2,025 works for assessment submitted by African music industry artistes, professionals and journalists.

Celebrities / Nneka, The Pretty Serpent by NaijaPoint: 6:46am On Sep 27, 2014
Nneka, the Pretty Serpent,
Twenty two years after it ruled the silver screen in the 90s, “Nneka the Pretty Serpent,’ one of the most influential home videos in Nigeria, is set to hit the screen again.

Also, hitting the screen is the epic film, “Battle of Musanga”, which has been produced since 20 years ago, but was yet to hit the market for reasons best known to the producer, ‘Beyond Vows” among others.

Notable film maker and businessman, Igwe gabosky Okoye who is embaking on this laudable project said, has commenced the process of reproducing the evergreen Nollywood movies to sustain the legacy.

The films made waves in the 90s, and later went into oblivion when the ovation was still very loud.

While it was in vogue,‘Nneka the Pretty Serpent’served as a career Launchpad for the likes of Ndidi Obi, Eucharia Anunobi, Ngozi Ezeonu and Rita Nzelu, Sam Loco and Kanayo O.KanayIt was directed by veteran director, Zeb Ejiro and featured cameo appearances by actors late James Iroha, Claude Eke and singer Nelly Uchendu. ‘Nneka the Pretty Serpent’ tells the story of a mermaid disguised as human

Accoding to Gabsoky, “Reproducing these films is in line with the ideals of my organisation-G-Media. We will be marketing contemporary Nigerian movies as well as classics; those movies that heralded Nollywood which included; “Battle of Musanga’, Nneka, the Pretty Serpent, Fatal Desire, Living in Bondage, Evil Passion and Circle of Doom. Some of these films, I still have them in my shelve. I will be meeting with the producers with the aim of reproducing them.

That’s why I started by reproducing my own works; Battle of Musanga, Nneka, The Pretty Serpent, Beyond the Vows. I will not limit myself to Gabosky’s Productions. I will go beyond that to create the difference in the industry. I want to tell the story that movies are supposed to sell for eternity, and not for a while”.

Gabosky said, he preserved the films, adding that the films went through audio-visual corrector in order to make them meet the standard of today. ‘It’s same production but they films are clearer now than before. Nneka (played by Ndidi Obi) whose mission on earth was to go after married men. She would use her supernatural powers to hypnotize any man she fancied and eventually destroy them.

Although shot in Igbo language and subtitled in English, the movie still gained a lot of attention in the other parts of the country, especially in the South West. Gabosky recently launched his distribution network, G-Media to check the excesses of piratesand reurn.

Health / Ebola Victims In African Village 'rise From The Dead' Causing Panic And Fear Amo by NaijaPoint: 6:40am On Sep 27, 2014
Ebola victims in African village 'rise from the dead' causing panic and fear among locals
Panic is spreading in an African village that Ebola patients are rising from the dead. This is a file picture of an Ebola victim
Panic is spreading across an African community after reports that two Ebola victims have risen from the dead.
The victims, both females in their 40s and 60s, died of the deadly virus in separate communities in Nimba County, Liberia.
But according to reports in a local newspaper, the pair have reportedly been resurrected and are now walking among the living, causing panic and fear among locals.
The New Dawn Nimba County said the late Dorris Quoi of Hope Village Community and the second victim identified as Ma Kebeh, in her late 60s, were about to be taken for burial when they rose from the dead.

Ma Kebeh had been indoors for two nights without food and medication before her alleged death.
Nimba County has recently reported unusual news of Ebola cases, including one about a native doctor from the county, who claimed that he could cure infected victims, dying of the virus himself last week.
Since the Ebola outbreak in Nimba County, this is the first incident of dead victims resurrecting, the paper said.
The Ebola outbreak has already killed around 2,800 people in five West African countries this year while an estimated 5,800 people have been infected with the virus, which has no known cure.
America’s respected Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has predicted there could be up to 1.4million cases of deadly Ebola by the end of January.

The CDC, which successfully treated two US doctors infected with the disease, released the worrying report based on assumptions that cases have been dramatically under reported.
The Centre’s scientists believe there may be as many as 21,000 reported and unreported cases in just Liberia and Sierra Leone alone by the end of this month.
The World Health Organisation has already warned the number of people infected with the Ebola could reach 20,000 by the beginning of November if steps to contain the outbreak are not accelerated.

Politics / Ebola Hits The Economy by NaijaPoint: 2:20am On Aug 31, 2014
By Udeme Clement - Vanguard

There is no doubt that the outbreak of the Ebola disease, which started in Guinea , as a major health hazard, now has serious economic implications in the entire West African sub-region. The sectors most affected include aviation, export sub-sector, industries dominated by large scale buying and selling of goods, open markets for second-hand clothes and other places within the affected countries.

Experts are of the opinion that the epidemic has already slashed economic growth in the sub-region by over 4 per cent and may result to increase in the prices of commodities and food shortages in some affected countries, if not quickly addressed.
Visit to open markets in Lagos:
When Sunday Vanguard visited Katangua, one of the largest markets for second-hand clothes business at Abule-Egba, area of Lagos, some dealers were seen in small groups lamenting about slow pace of business in the market due to the disease. Mrs. Hellen Idiong, fondly called Madam cash, a dealer who spoke with our correspondent said, “You can see that everywhere is scanty. Our customers are not coming out like before. Most people are still afraid of buying second-hand clothes because of this Ebola virus.”

Another dealer, who gave his name as Mr. Samuel Junior, seen with hand-glove while arranging clothes in the market said, “This Ebola is a serious problem and the outbreak is very dangerous not only for people coming to buy but for some of us selling the clothes, because there is no way the materials will not touch our skin. That is why I am trying to protect myself with hand-glove. I will also advise people to wash these clothes with soup and disinfectants before wearing them.

Initially, I used to open a whole bale of clothes almost at every market day, but now I cannot even finish selling one bale in a week. Since I started business in Katangua in 2008, when a bale of second-hand clothes was sold for between N19,000 and N20,000, up till now that a bale goes for almost N40.000 and above depending on individual bargaining power, I have never experienced this kind of thing.”

He went on, “To me, Katangua is the biggest market in Lagos. People from different parts of Lagos come here to shop for used clothes, shoes, bags and even curtains. This is because second-hand materials are durable. Some people even come here to buy in bulk and for retail in other smaller markets. I have customers who sell in their shops at Yaba, Oshodi and Orile. They usually come here to buy in large quantity to resell.”

On the implication of doing business with second-hand clothes, which are categorised under contra-band items in government’s import prohibition list, he said, well, you can call it contra-band or prohibited goods, but this is a big business here. If not for this Ebola virus that is scaring people, we would not even have time to talk because of human traffic in the market. Goods coming into Katangua are imported from China, Dubai, Europe as well as other Asian countries, and are brought in through Republic of Benin. We have over 10,000 dealers in this market and different unions regulating the activities of traders under Hausa, Igbo and other associations. You can see that everyone is affected by this epidemic. So, our appeal is for government to prevent the spread of this Ebola virus, because it is affecting our business negatively aside from the effect on health”.

Aviation
During a visit to the local and international airports in Lagos, it was observed that screening and surveillance for comprehensive health checks were carried out by health experts for air travellers.

The aviation sector is experiencing revenue losses, Mohammed Tukur, Aviation expert in Nigeria.

He said, “Low turn out of passengers as well as flights cancellation is the major effect on the sector, which is why I believe that aviation is the worst hit since the outbreak of this disease. Apart from loss of revenue arising from slow pace of business activities by different airlines, passengers are also suffering. For instance, we are experiencing frequent cancellation of flights to different countries in the region. The situation is so frustrating because sometimes you see passengers who have made necessary arrangements to travel being turned back at the airport because of flights cancellation.

“The Ebola outbreak took everyone unaware that is why there is panic everywhere in the country. Since Ebola virus was discovered in 1976 near the Ebola River, which is where we know today as the Democratic Republic of Congo, this is the first time we are experiencing a major outbreak in the sub-region, but government is doing it best to tackle the epidemic.”

Responding to question on recent complaints from local airline operators about loss of revenue to foreign airlines, He said, ‘We are advising local operators to go into partnership with foreign airlines that have the financial capacity to operate within and outside Nigeria. For instance, currently only ARIK is flying to New York and other countries while other local airlines are operating only within Nigeria. So, we have to support ARIK.”

Effect on aviation sector/food shortages:

Another aviation expert, who spoke with Sunday Vanguard, at the international airport under anonymity, said, “The situation is more worrisome in the Aviation sector and if not well addressed, may pave the way for food shortages in some affected countries within the region. At present, some airlines are still cancelling flights to countries within the sub-region for fear of Ebola, not withstanding the control measures put in place to prevent the spread.

For instance, about 216 out of 590 monthly flights scheduled for Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea had been cancelled. Look at what is happening in Kenya. Though Ebola virus has not even been detected in Kenya, Korean Airlines early August suspended flights to and from Kenya, saying the decision was to prevent the spread of the virus.”

He went on, “The management of Air France has not out-rightly suspended flights to the sub-region, but they saying passengers from Guinea, Freetown in Sierra Leone and Nigeria must have their temperature taken before boarding the aircraft. This is not only limited to Air France, other airlines are also doing the same thing.
