Saudi Arabia has reportedly passed a law preventing spouses from illegally accessing each other’s mobile phones, adding it to the IT-ranked crimes.

According to Gulf Digital News, citing legal sources, if caught on spying on each other’s smartphones, husbands and wives will spend up to a year in prison, or will have to pay a fine not exceeding 500,000 Saudi riyals ($133,565), or even receive both forms of punishment.

Such penalties will be applied to partners who share or send the information that they have gained access to; if they access the phone without using the data, the spouses will receive a warning from the judge depending on the circumstances of the case and the damage caused to the person whose phone was snooped through.

Legal Advisor Abdul Aziz bin Batel told Al Arabiya that any crime committed using computers, smartphones and cameras shall be viewed as a cybercrime and will be punished accordingly.

"The article specifies that the punishments target those who commit information crimes, namely tapping, intercepting or sharing through the internet, without a justification or for threatening or extortion," Batel explained.

Saudi Arabia is not the only country where spying on your spouse’s phone is illegal; in 2016 an Arab expat woman living in the United Arab Emirates was fined and deported because she checked her husband’s phone without his permission, suspecting that he was having an affair. The woman had reportedly sent pictures, which could allegedly incriminate him for being unfaithful, from his cell to hers via the WhatsApp messenger. After she accused him of infidelity, he filed a complaint with the court accusing her of accessing his phone and sending information without his knowledge.

The Defence Headquarters, on Saturday, denied that troops withdrew a few days before the abduction of schoolgirls in Dapchi, Yobe State.

It explained that the troops were located just 30 kilometres from the school.

The Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. John Agim, in a text message to one of our correspondents, said there was no truth in the allegation that the military withdrew a few hours to the attack.

Agim said, “There is no truth in the allegation because the military has been in a location that is about 30 kilometres to the school.”

Efforts to get the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, Moshood Jimoh, did not succeed as he neither returned calls to his mobile nor responded to an SMS sent to him.

A national newspaper had reported on Saturday that the Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, said security men withdrew from Dapchi a few hours to the attack.

Gaidam stated this when the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, paid him a visit in Damaturu, the state capital.

The Boko Haram insurgents, who abducted the girls, were reported to have arrived at Dapchi at 7pm on Monday and left at 9pm.

FG plans to beef up security in schools

In the mean time, the Federal Government on Saturday said it planned to improve security system in schools to curb terror attacks.

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, listed limited budgetary allocation and the number of schools as problems that must be addressed before such a plan could be actualised.

The minister said, “The problem is that we have many schools spread all over the country and we have a very limited budget for the schools. But we are doing the best we can.

“There are plans to provide better security for the schools. We have a lot of things in the pipeline to do.”

Cut legislators’, ministers’ salary by half, Sanusi tells Buhari

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, the Emir of Kano, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari to review the salaries of members of the National Assembly and ministers, with a view to creating more jobs for Nigerian unemployed youths.

According to Guardian, he said this yesterday while urging political office holders to make sacrifices and salvage the country from its current economic downturn.

He argued that if the salary of each member of the National Assembly was divided into two, it would go a long way to provide more jobs for 70,400 jobless Nigerians at between N90, 000 and N92, 500 monthly salary.

Sanusi gave the charge through a statement addressed to President Buhari, while also lamenting that the salary of military personnel, who are defending the country was only N49, 000 with some of them lacking accommodation.

He said: “Where is the change? Change should start with the National Assembly. A senator receives N36million monthly. If this is divided into two, it comes to N18 million.

The second half of N18 million can be used to create jobs for 200 Nigerians, each earning N90, 000 monthly, When you multiply 200 people by 109 senators, this will give 21,800 Nigerians gainful employment.

In short, 200 Nigerians will be able to live a comfortable life on half a senator’s monthly salary.”

Further highlighting the disparity in the standard of living of public office holders, particularly the legislators, Sanusi argued that a member of the House of Representatives receives N25million monthly.

“Half of that amount is N12.5million, which is enough to employ 135 Nigerians with a monthly salary of N92, 500 each.

Jalingo – Barely seven hours after governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba state cried OUT that the state was going be attack in ten days, unknown gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen attack and killed four persons in Ngutsen village of Wurojam ward in Gasol local government area of Taraba state.

An eye witness spoke to Vanguard on phone said the attackers arrived the village at about 9 pm on Thursday.

A Pentecostal Pastor, Bernard Towoju, has urged an Igando Customary Court, Lagos to dissolve his marriage to his wife, Abosede, for allegedly using her private part to invoke curses on him.

Towoju, 53, said in his divorce petition on Monday that “I cannot continue to make love with a woman who always goes naked and swears for me with her private part”.

According to him, Abosede is stubborn, wayward and troublesome.

“She once came to my office to fight me and tore my clothes in the presence of my colleagues. We fight on daily basis and hurt each other a lot.

“We always land in the police station after our fight, in fact, we are regular customers at the station,’’ he said.

The petitioner accused his wife of threatening his life, adding that his wife always hit him with dangerous weapons whenever they quarrelled.

“I had to run away from the house I built 10 years ago to rent an apartment for safety.

“She chased me with cutlass, bottles and sticks; our neighbours can testify to that.

“I am afraid, I cannot sleep under the same roof with her with my two eyes closed,” he said.

He begged the court to dissolve the marriage that the love he once had for her had faded and he could no longer tolerate her ill-nature and troubles.

The respondent, Abosede, a fashion designer, accused her husband of calling her a witch.

“He said everywhere he went for a solution to his problems, they always tell him that I am behind his predicament.

“My hands are clean; I know nothing about his woes.

“Towoju abandoned me and the children 10 years ago, I have been taking care of the children,” the 46-year-old woman added.

The mother of four urged the court not to grant her husband’s request for the dissolution of the marriage, saying “I still love him”.

In his judgment, the court President, Mr Akin Akinniyi, said the petitioner was adamant despite all mediation from the court and family.

“Since the petitioner insisted on divorce after several interventions, the court has no choice than to dissolve the union in spite of the fact that the wife still claims she loves her husband.

“The court pronounced the marriage between Pastor Bernard Towoju and Mrs Abosede Towoju dissolved today, both parties henceforth ceased to be husband and wife.

“Both are free to go their separate ways without any hindrances and molestation,” Akinniyi ruled.

A UN peacekeeping mission base in Congo has repelled an attack by insurgents of the Allied Democratic Forces, according to radio station Okapi, which is linked to peacekeepers.

The UN spokesperson has reported that fourteen UN peacekeepers had been killed and more than forty wounded in the attack on the peacekeeper’s base in the North Kivu province, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Deputy UN spokesman Farhan Haq said that the deadly attack also claimed lives of at least five Congolese soldiers.

Under-Secretary-General for the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix wrote on Twitter that he was “outraged” by the attack.

A 22-year-old man, Jamiu Habeeb, who allegedly stole 10 shirts worth N8000 from a trader, Mohammed Isah, was on Friday in Lagos granted a N50,000 bail.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr M.A. Etti, who gave the ruling at an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, ordered the accused to provide one surety as part of the bail conditions.

Etti said the surety must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

The accused, who entered a ‘not guilty’ plea, is facing two charges of conspiracy and stealing.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused, who resides at the Ajegunle area of Apapa, Lagos, committed the offences on Nov. 21, at Ijora Market, Apapa, Lagos.

The Nigeria Police Force have dismissed allegations of torture and crimes levelled against the the special anti-robbery squad (SARS).

SARS was established by the Nigeria police to fight violent crimes.

On Saturday, Some Nigerians took to the social media to condemn the “careless” regard for human lives which they say is evident in operations of SARS operatives.

While calling for the proscription of the squad, they accused SARS of maltreating and torturing innocent citizens at will.

But the police said such accusations should be dismissed by Nigerians.

Speaking to TheCable on Sunday, Jimoh Moshood, police spokesman, said SARS has lived up to its duty of curbing violent crimes and so, calls for its proscription should be “totally condemned”.

“As we speak, SARS is doing fantastically well across the country in reducing incidents of robbery to the barest minimum… they are doing very, very well,” Moshood said.

“There has not been any specific violation of human rights against any SARS personnel. So anybody that is spreading such a rumour is not doing the nation any good.

“SARS has no excesses and when there is any, we do investigate.

“The call for SARS to be scrapped should be condemned by all well-meaning Nigerians. Anybody calling for their proscription is not doing the nation any good and such people should be suspected as having something to hide.”

Moshood urges Nigerians with complaints against any police officer – “whether SARS or any other personnel” – to channel their complaints through established channels.

“Accessibility (to the police in cases of complaints) is very possible, he said, adding: “We do not take any infraction or violation of human right of any Nigerian likely. You know that so many police officers have been dismissed and even charged to court.”

“So, Nigerians should not give in to insinuations from people that just come to the social media and start spreading falsehood. Such people spreading such information may likely be armed robbers themselves.

“There is laid down rules for police procedures and any police officer that go beyond boundary to do something outrageous which is against the law is apprehended.”

The 92-meter-long prototype aircraft dubbed the Flying Bum cost around 100 million euros to get into the air before it crashed this Saturday during its second flight.
Its manufacturer, Hybrid Air Vehicles, had carried out test flights on Friday, but the next day the prototype had malfunctioned.

Roads have been reportedly blocked due to fears of helium gas and fuel leaks. A woman was also injured during the crash that took place close to the aircraft hangars in Cardington, Bedfordshire.

Councilor Paul Smith said, “Sad news for Airship fans, The Airlander has broken free from its mast this morning and has deflated. It's currently in a field next to the Cardington sheds, the wreckage looks quite bad at the moment but we await confirmation apparently trees ripped the skin open,” Daily Mail reported.

Previously it was reported that the company hoped the Airlander would be used for luxury commercial flights over the world's greatest sights from 2019. It can carry up to 60 passengers and 10 tons of cargo.

Earlier this year hundreds of people had gathered to witness the prototype preparing to take off in Cardington Airfield, but the Airlander’s mooring lines got tangled with power lines.
