We Need An Ambulance- Students of College of Health Sciences, Nnewi Cry Out

Approximately fourteen years after the ugly fire incident that left not less than nine medical students dead on the 9th of May, 2001 at the College of health sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi campus, the students still mourn and remember their departed colleagues.

Some lives could have been saved in the unfortunate incident according to the president, Students Association Government of the college, Comrade Jennifer Ikediugwu Jordan, if the school had a functional ambulance as the one available broke down on the road while conveying the victims to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi.

The students came out en masse on Friday, May 8 to commemorate the death of their fellow students. In his remarks, the chair of the occasion and Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Ebele Ugochukwu describing the incident as unfortunate advised the students on the need for better safety ethics in their hostels and homes so as to avert any reoccurrence of the sad incident.

In a sober reflection, an eye witness to the ill fated incident who simply identified herself as mama Ozi gave an account of what really transpired on the tragic day expressing disappointment on the fact that fourteen years later, the campus remains without a functional ambulance.

Delivering the memorial lecture at the event, Revd. Fr. Dr. Maurice Izunwa who spoke on selflessness as exhibited by one of the victims, Chinedu Chukwuneke who defied the fire in a bid to saving other persons trapped in the hostel during the inferno. He urged the students to emulate the late hero who showed an uncommon gallantry, laying his life for others.

Also speaking at the event, the Dean of Students Affairs of the university, Prof. Ken Nworgu described the memorial as a selfless venture stating that it's better remembered dead but effective than playing away one's time while alive. He added that the victims died for a course urging the students to keep steadfast with such kind of selfless commitment. He promised to take the request of an ambulance by the students to the school management.

Also addressing the students, the President Students Union Government of the institution, Comrade Noble Eyisi gave the reason for participating in the memorial as a way of lending support to the students in Nnewi campus stating that all the students of the university are one and as such should be seen and heard as one. Comrade Eyisi promised to carry the students along in his administration while expressing hopes that with a good synergy, the request for a new ambulance would be pursued vigorously.

While lamenting over the poor learning environment of the college, comrade Jordan said, "College of Health Sciences Nnamdi Azikiwe University Nnewi Campus has existed for so many years now, producing seasoned medical practitioners who have been saving lives all over the world but yet our own lives as students during these rigorous trainings have lost value in the eyes of our leaders! We have been terribly neglected for years. The entire students of this great College cry out with one voice. We need help
High points of the event were beautiful renditions and drama presentation by the students. There was also a procession to the monument to pay respects to the fallen heroes. Shortly after the procession, one of the students and M.C, Miss Millicent Ekwudo seized the opportunity to reverberate the abysmal state of the school's only functioning ambulance and to appeal to the school authority to heed our cry for help and come to their aid in providing that which is pertinent to sustaining and securing the life of students in the campus, a plea that was backed up by every single student present as they echoed " we need an ambulance".

ABOUT THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES, UNIZIK OKOFIA NNEWI
College of health sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi campus is a relatively unknown branch of UNIZIK with a population of about 3000 students with 3 faculties, eight departments and just about 8 classrooms. Students lamented that this catastrophic shortage of classrooms make it difficult for students to receive lectures. Students even have to jump through window while hustling for a space in class while others who cannot struggle, receive lectures through the windows. A particular student also said 340 students were recently admitted into the college to study environmental health sciences without any classroom to accommodate that number. It was a common sight to see students studying under the few trees on the campus. The road inside the school premises is been constructed at a very slow pace. The road leading to the college is also in a terrible state, sport facilities are dilapidated. We hope to get more information about the happenings in this college soon. Students also complained about the abandoned CBN hostel which is opposite the school gate, poor electricity supply.

Education / Tension In UNIZIK As SUG President Queries VC On Alleged Corruption by nairaarea: 4:42pm On May 12, 2015
By Vincent Ujumadu
Awka- TENSION is mounting at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka following a letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Joseph Ahaneku by the president of the Students Union Government, SUG, Mr. Noble Eyisi over some perceived anomalies in the institution.

As the students were circulating the letter in the campus,Tuesday, security operatives tried as much as they could to mop up the document, but it was late as most people in the university community had got copies of it.

In the letter, several allegations were leveled against the VC by the SUG, most of which bordering on corrupt tendencies.

For instance, the SUG alleged that for the first time, Year 1 students were asked to pay the sum of N7500 for what the school management called ‘Biometric Capturing fee’, adding that with about 6000 students admitted this session paying the amount, the sum of N45 million was collected and wondered what the money has been used for .

The students’ union president also demanded to know how the students union dues paid annually were utilized because, according to him, the students who are the sole owners of the money have been demanding to know how much is in the account.

Other demands of the students include reasons behind the hike of the post-UME fee from N1000 to N2000 by the present management of the university, why the management objected to the food price of N150 per plate initiated by the SUG, why SUG officials were not paid allowances as obtainable in other tertiary institutions and why the VC initiates and carries out policies that directly affect the students without consulting them.

The letter said: “Our dear VC, the students are the bedrock of any university. We demand that you take us as your utmost priority. As this is a federal institution and in view of the trending change and zero corruption in Nigeria through our president –elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, we demand a transparent system and a complete students- oriented government.”

Family / My Honour To Womanhood By Fr. Jude Chukwuneke by nairaarea: 2:49pm On Apr 20, 2015
Women are amazingly strong creatures of God:

- with emotional strength

-physical strength

-mental strength

Women naturally love attention (they want people to have their back)
An average woman when there are stakes (when she is put in charge of something/something depends on her - project/family, they give their best.

Women are brought to the world to live for other people:

-as a child, she lives for her siblings,

-as a young girl/adult, she lives for her siblings, parents and 'boy friend' (looking out for them and making sure they are ok. Also supporting and encouraging them)

-as a mother/wife, she lives for her husband (changing her maiden name to bear his, at least in our culture). Sacrificing the shape/figure she worked so hard for, to bear him children and then living the rest of her life loving them, taking care of them and giving them the best.

THAT IS WHY I CONSIDER A 'GIRL CHILD' A BLESSING BECAUSE EVEN WHEN SHE MARRIES SHE THINKS MUM AND DAD AND SIBLINGS, OF COURSE, STILL NOT NEGLECTING HER OWN MARRIAGE (unlike men who most likely will be drawn to their nuclear family, may be because of the challenge of immediate responsibility especially financial).

Women are not only symbols of peace but of respect too. Even the bible upholds this fact - "he who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains Favour from the Lord' Prov. 18:22.

This implies that all men who are married have been favored by God.

Although today many unflattering things are said about women, but I think a woman is a product of what surrounds her or in fact of what you give her.

So, you give her love = you get love,

You give her respect = you get respect in return,

After all, you give her a house = she gives you a home,

You give her a sperm cell = and she gives you a complete being (a baby or babies as the case may be).

You give her ingredients = and she gives you a well prepared/made dish.

TRY IT!
WHATEVER YOU GIVE A WOMAN, SHE MULTIPLIES ITS VALUE.

womanhood is a calling indeed!

A woman's job doesn't end with her marriage to her husband.

Apart from focussing on the family she has a job/trade where she tries to support her husband from.
She comes back tired but still has a family to feed, so as tired as she may be, she starts job #2, ( this is actually the most important job).
Not even taking off her clothes, she goes straight to the kitchen till food is ready and serves it.
Then time to shower and rest (well may be not ...because her husband may need her attention beyond).
She gets up before everyone else the next morning to get the kids ready for school, prepares the meals for everyone even lunch packs because she thinks ahead. And she has to get ready for work herself.

WOMEN ARE SUPERHUMAN

Labour pains are like having so many bones crushed at the same time. I know you can't imagine how you can have your bones crushed at the same time AND YET SHE GOES THROUGH IT AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN EVEN WITH ALL THE TIRING STITCHES.

Even when kids are all grown up, she is busy praying and interceding for them more still, nursing and giving care for their children, grand children and sons and daughters in-law.

When troubles arise in the family, they are the binding factor for either dads and kids, sons, daughters and in-laws.
They are there at good times 'Omugo' and know how to catch fun combined with post natal responsibilities, and in times of sorrows, they cry harder because they feel the pain harder and also sooting the wounded with the proper balm (empathy).

When a group of children misbehave, other women step in/intervene being mums to every child.
Even when a woman dies in labour, another takes over and breast feeds her children/babies.
Again when a woman is put to bed and breast milk isn't forthcoming or impaired (however) another woman can improvise.
Women from puberty (some from extraordinary ages of 9, 10, 11, 12) start experiencing the pains of menstrating (menstrual cramps) which lasts a life time in different forms.

WE CAN GO ON AND ON, INDEED WOMEN ARE PRICELESS.

Today as we celebrate Mother's Sunday, I choose to dedicate this piece (MY HONOUR TO WOMANHOOD) to these classes of women:

-Women abused both or either by husbands and/or children.

-women abused by society, people and culture, exposing them to all forms of criminal assault.

-women that were never married.

-women from broken homes and of broken homes.

-women that were and are still not appreciated.

- women that never put to bed or conceived (have no child/children of their own)

-women that have died out of labour complications (in fact, those who died in labour), even women who have worked so hard and didn't live to reap the fruit of their labour.

-even women of Consecrated Life (nuns and other female Religious) who receive/get little or no care.

-even women who are terminally sick and incapacitated.

-to my priceless mum, sisters, sisters in-law, and every other woman.

PRAYER

I pray life treats you kind and that you have all you dream of, I wish you joy and happiness and above all things I wish you love. Amen!

May the Blessed Virgin - the Mother of God be your model and lead you to actualize the dignity of womanhood with all its joy. Amen!

Let us all with more joy and enthusiasm say Happy Mothers' Sunday our priceless ladies, women and Mothers for we all have women in our live.

Health / First Surrogate In-vitro Fertilization (ivf) Baby In South East Nigeria by nairaarea: 7:45am On Apr 06, 2015
On Friday the 3rd of April 2015 in LIFE SPECIALIST HOSPITAL LTD Nnewi Anambra State a major medical breakthrough occured. The South East of Nigeria took delivery of its FIRST SURROGATE IN-VITRO FERTILIZATION (IVF) BABY. this feat was achieved by a doctor who had achieved so much in this area over the past few years, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu. Facebook doctors spoke with him but before you read the interview, what is IN-VITRO FERTILIZATION egg INTRACYTOPLASMIC SPERM INJECTION (ICSI)

IN-VITRO FERTILIZATION (IVF) is a series of complex procedures and the most effective form of assisted reproductive technology (ART) used in the treatment of fertility and some genetic problems. It has offered hope and put smiles on the faces of couples who for reason or the other have not been able to achieve pregnancy and have a child of their own. fertility-image

IVF entails collecting/ harvesting mature eggs from the ovaries and fertilizing them in the laboratory using the sperm. When the egg and sperm fuse and form the embryo, it is then transferred to the uterus for implantation and growth into a baby (the so called test tube baby). The eggs and sperm can come from known or unknown donors, fused and transferred to a recipient (mother) who will then carry it to term and own the baby. Sometimes, a man whose partner can not carry a pregnancy but can produce eggs, can have the eggs harvested, fertilized by the partner’s sperm and transferred to another woman’s womb (surrogate mother), who will carry it to term, deliver the baby and hand it to the parents. One cycle of IVF can take about two weeks and can be time consuming, expensive, minimally invasive but it is worth the try. It can also produce twins or triplets (multiple pregnancy) of desired sexes. You are a candidate of IVF if you have the following:

a) Damaged or blocked fallopian tubes

b) Ovarian failure

c) Malignant diseases of the uterus or other parts of the reproductive system

d) Tubal removal or sterilization

e) Unexplained infertility

INTERVIEW WITH PROFESSOR JOSEPH IKECHEBELU

Anambra state is proud to record the birth of the first surrogate baby girl, born on friday the 3rd of April 2015 at 6.35am at the #fertilitycentre of LIFE SPECIALIST HOSPITAL Nnewi in Anambra state.

In an interview with the Medical director and owner of the hospital, PROF2Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, (a professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) of the highly esteemed Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, he told us that choosing fertility (which is a branch of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) to him, is like a calling from God. Hear him….

Facebook doctors (FBD): Good evening Prof

Prof: Good evening, you are welcome. Please sit down

FBD: Thank you. We are members of the team of Facebook doctors, an online health magazine or blog. We logged on to facebook yesterday and saw you in a picture with a newborn baby who you described as the first surrogate child from IVF in your clinic, so we decided to come and find out more about it and the IVF. Prof how did you get into IVF/fertility and why did you choose this area?

Prof: (laughs) Let me say that I actually chose fertility as a calling. Some people may have it as a place where they like to be but as for me, it is like a directive from God to move into fertility and help people achieve their life ambition of becoming pregnant and having a baby.

FBD: You must be very good at it because we have heard reports and when we got here we were like “is this the humble place where these things happen?”

Prof: (laughs heartily)

FBD: It is something to celebrate really but what exactly is in-vitro fertilization?

Prof: IVF is a special reproductive technique for achieving a pregnancy where you harvest the egg from the woman and sperm from the partner and fuse the two in the laboratory, when the embryo is formed, you put it back in the womb to grow. In-vitro means outside the body, so it is a fertilization that is taking place outside the body but you have to return it into the womb for it to start growing.

FBD: And now we have a surrogate baby, that means somebody else carried the baby? PROF AND BABY Prof Ikechebelu and the new surrogate baby

Prof: (nods) Beautiful! In surrogacy as it is called, for one reason or the other the womb of the woman can not carry the pregnancy but she still has ovaries and can generate her own eggs. So in this particular woman we had, she has an absent uterus, a kind of malformation she was born with. But she has her ovaries and eggs, so all we did was harvest her eggs and the husband’s sperm, fertilize it in the laboratory. When it formed an embryo, we transferred it into a 3rd party, the surrogate mother.

FBD: How did you get the 3rd party?

Prof: The 3rd party is usually a person who is willing for a fee to give the service. All they need to do is write an agreement and carry the pregnancy, deliver and hand it over to the couple because the genetic material is from the couple. This is where you want to have a baby of your own…because when we talk about the levels of parenting or what makes a child your own, the genetic material must come from you. All you lack is the suitable environment to grow the embryo and that’s what is ‘hired’…we hired a womb to carry the pregnancy.

FBD: But in hiring a womb to carry the pregnancy, does it not affect the baby..I mean the environment where the embryo grows?

Prof: No! Usually once there is fertilization and the embryo is formed, every genetic material it needs to grow is there, all you need is the environment. It is just like taking a newborn baby whose mother died after childbirth and give it to a foster parent for them to bring him up.

FBD: That brings me to ethics and genetic engineering and mutation. What is your take on this?

Prof: Genetic engineering…yes, it’s in progress now and they are even talking about cloning, These are all new technologies and fal louts of IVF.

FBD: Is it right or wrong? What do you think about it?

Prof: Mmmm…aah..The question whether it is right or wrong is relative. Why I said that is this; If it is used for the purpose of advancing knowledge and science, it is right. But if it is used negatively to kill or produce a technology that destroys life, then it is wrong. BABY1 The New Surrogate Baby

FBD: How far has IVF gone in helping those in the conditions you mentioned?

Prof: That’s a very good question. I will say that IVF is a God-given procedure and has helped so many couples who for one reason or the other cannot have a child. Some people because their fallopian tubes are blocked, they live a life of condemnation, some people because of a surgery they did that destroyed some parts of their reproductive system, it is not a fault of theirs. Some men whose spermatic cord are mistakingly tied for instance, during herniorrhaphy but still have sperm in their testes, are some of those cases that IVF has provided an answer to. The sperm or eggs in these cases can be harvested and used to achieve pregnancy and the couples will be satisfied. Remember that marriage in an African setting is for child bearing. No matter how much love they confess to each other other, once a child is not there, the love vanishes. (general laughter).

FBD: So sir, what are the dangers associated with IVF?

Prof: The dangers are minimal I will say but the one we really know of is hyperstimulation syndrome. During the process of trying to get the eggs, if you overstimulate the ovaries, they can develop hyperstimulation syndrome and if it is severe, can lead to death. But every doctor who is using this technology knows how to avoid that, using proper precautions. Once the syndrome is not there, you can do IVF as many times as it is possible.

FBD: How far has IVF spread in Nigeria? Is it something we have cottoned on to?

Prof: IVF is all over the country and has come to stay, the challenge is that it is still very expensive. In developed countries, people have health insurance and can take care of about 6 cycles of IVF, but in Nigeria, people pay from their pockets. PROF1 Professor Joseph Ikechebelu MD Life Specialist Hospital Nnewi

FBD: Why is it so?

Prof: Because our health insurance scheme is still very young, so they start by covering those basic ailments that affect more people- the masses. Fertility affects just about 2-3% of the general population.

FBD: What is your advice to people out there who have fertility problems?

Prof: Well my advice is if you want to have a child of your own when natural conception is impossible, IVF provides a solution to that so once you can afford the money, go for it.

FBD: Are you also advising people all over the country who need IVF to come down to Nnewi?

Prof: There are many fertility centres all over the country where IVF is done, but if you feel that what we are doing is good enough for you and you have faith, why not? I always tell people to have some faith in whatever they do. This is science but we still need to have some faith.

FBD: I was going to ask what it is with doctors and faith because everywhere you go, you hear them saying something like In God we trust….We treat but God heals…

Prof: (smiles) Yes, faith is important because we still have some limitations in IVF. There are some certain areas that are not within our control for instance, the preparation, harvesting of the eggs and the fertilization can be controlled, we can put it in the incubator, we can even do intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) where we can select a single sperm cell and inject it into an egg…yes we can do all that but once the embryo is formed, check it, select it and put it inside the womb, at that stage of what we call embryo-endometrial cross stuck, from there, we have no other control and that is where we apply faith to get it to implant. We however, know that there are things that can be done to increase the rate of implantation but they are still under research. That is also the stage where most IVF procedures fail.

FBD: Alright prof, thanks for granting us an audience, we are most grateful.

Prof: Thank you.

FBD: uhm…, we also wish to talk to the surrogate mother and the biological mother of the baby, is it possible?

Prof: Oh well, it is possible and i have spoken to them earlier about it but high level of confidentiality should be maintained in this case…you understand?…

FBD: Oh yes sir, we do. Thank you once again.

Prof: You are welcome.
