THE HOUR OF GLORY IS THE HOUR OF THE CROSS BY FR. BEN OGECHI AGBARA FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Biblical scholars generally divide the Gospel according to John into 2: The book of signs (1:19-12:50) and the book of glory (13:1-20:31). The former shows Jesus bringing different types of people to believe in him through his teaching and the signs he showed. In the latter Jesus begins to announce his exit which will necessarily be through the cross. However, this division of the book is more for academic convenience and exegesis, not really to separate the sign and the glory. From the wedding at Cana the Evangelist records that Jesus revealed his glory when he changed water into wine, which is the first or the alpha sign. The cross itself is also a sign, the omega sign. It's the climax of his signs and it is the fulness of his glory. He saved the world through the cross. So nearness to the cross is nearness to glory. We should not think that Jesus enjoyed the cross. No, he didn't. What Jesus enjoyed was the glory of God and the salvation of humanity. It was by being raised on the cross that he could draw all men and women to himself. Jesus invites us to accept the cross as a necessary condition for salvation. It is only only by dying that a grain of wheat bears fruit. We may not experience the cross exactly as Jesus did. Our cross may not be the rituals that we carry out during the lenten season or Holy Week. It may just be a little thing you have to do or forfeit for the glory of God and the good of humanity. Don't just be interested in the signs shown by Jesus. Be a part of it. The cross is the greatest or the omega sign. The new Covenant is sealed by the blood of Jesus on the cross. If you are a part of his cross then you are a part of his glory and a part of the new Covenant. Remember that the hour of glory is the hour of the cross. The hour of glory has come. Let us get involved. Don't forget to pray for a peaceful election in Nigeria and also to get involved in the process. Let the glory of God shine on us and on our land. Happy Sunday. God bless us. 1week after our thread on 'Landlord beats up UNIZIK Nnewi student' where we decried the state of the roads and insufficiency of classroom in the college. We got news that the old back gate have been replaced and the road contractor for the schools internal road have returned to site. We hope the CBN will return to site to complete the abandoned hostel project.

Students of College of health sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe university, Nnewi campus are currently awaiting the intervention of the school authority over a case involving a popular landlord nicknamed ‘Youngest Landlord’ and a student of the department of nursing science, Kosi Nwoye. It was reported that the said student was beaten by the landlord on Friday 28 February, 2015 after a dispute that ensued why the later was about to fetch water at the tap. According to an eye witness, after the dispute, the landlord went into his room and took his belt and ran into the student's room and started flogging and hitting her. It took the intervention of some other students to stop the battering of Kosi. The student, who is currently writing her semester exams is now experiencing terrible pains as a result of the inhumane and barbaric treatment she got on Friday. You may ask: Is the landlord remorseful? My answer is NO. He was said to have told the school security that he will give the girl her money and evict her out of the lodge for calling him an idiot and also promised another tenant called Mimi that she was next. The Student Union Government (SUG), has called on students not to take laws into their hands as due process will be followed to ensure that the landlord is brought to book. The Chief security Officer and the Sub Dean of student Affairs have been briefed about the issue and students are waiting for them to take necessary action to forestall any further harassment of students. ABOUT THE COLLEGE OF HEALTH SCIENCES UNIZIK College of health sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi campus is a relatively unknown branch of UNIZIK with a population of about 3000 students with 3 faculties and eight departments and just about 6 classrooms. Students lamented that this catastrophic shortage of classrooms make it difficult for students to receive lectures. Students even have to jump through window while hustling for a space in class while others who cannot struggle, receive lectures through the windows. A particular student also said 340 students were recently admitted into the college to study environmental health sciences without any classroom to accommodate that number. It was a common sight to see students studying under the few trees on the campus. The road inside the school were also said to have been abandoned by a certain contractor. The road leading to the college is also in a terrible state, sport facilities are dilapidated. We hope to get more information about the happenings in this college soon. |
