Business / The Owner Of Zara Briefly Surpassed Bill Gates As The Richest Person In The Worl by nairamaverick(m): 1:22pm On Oct 24, 2015
Amancio Ortega was on top of the world this morning.

The 79-year-old owner of Zara had moved from the second richest person in the world to the richest person in the world, surpassing Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who has a net worth of $79.2 billion; however, the victory was short-lived.

According to a report by Forbes, Ortega’s net worth went up to $80 billion as stock in his holding company Industria de Diseño Textil (Inditex) experienced a sudden surge in share prices. But by 10 a.m. EST, the stock went down and Ortega was back at the No. 2 spot.

Don’t feel too sorry for him, though. The man who founded Zara in 1975 still has a net worth of $78.6 billion, as well as an entire block in Miami. And judging by the current momentum of fast-fashion retailers, it’s likely he’ll surpass Gates again.

Health / Sierra Leone Discharges Last Ebola Patient by nairamaverick(m): 7:31am On Aug 26, 2015
Sierra Leone may be over its health woes as it has released its last known Ebola patient.
According to the World Health Organisation, 35-year-old Adama Sankoh was discharged from a treatment centre in the northern Bombali district on Monday morning.

The country has not reported a new infection for more than two weeks, according to the National Ebola Response Centre.

However, a small number of cases are still being reported in neighbouring Guinea.
The milestone comes 15 months after the outbreak was declared in Sierra Leone. Almost 4,000 people have died of Ebola in that country since then.

The country’s President Ernest Bai Koroma attended the celebrations at the clinic run by International Medical Corps.

The Medical Director at the facility, Vanessa Wolfman, expressed hope that this might be the end of EVD in the country.

She said, “Today is a day of hope. People hope this is the beginning of the end. We have fought for so long.”

But the celebrations are tempered with caution. The country still has 28 people in quarantine. They will continue to be monitored until the end of the week in case they develop symptoms.

The Director of the situation room of NERC, OB Sisay, said, “We might have hidden cases, so we have to continue to be vigilant, continue our surveillance, maintain our discipline of hand-washing and temperature checks, screening and avoid over-crowding.”

The outbreak won’t be declared over until 42 days after the last Ebola patient either dies or is discharged. That 42-day limit is twice the incubation period of the virus.

While there have been no new cases in Sierra Leone for the past 17 days, according to NERC, Guinea reported three new infections in the week up to 19th August.

Sisay said, “We are very worried about Guinea. We are fervently hoping that they will make the same progress as we have Guinea’s problem is our problem.”

The NERC said it would continue with heightened surveillance, and specific anti-Ebola safe burial practices, for three months after the outbreak is officially declared over.

Sports / Another Bad Day For Nigerian Athletes In Beijing by nairamaverick(m): 7:22am On Aug 26, 2015
• George, Odele crash, Okagbare begins 200m today
It was another bad day for Team Nigeria yesterday, as one of the nation’s medals hope at the on-going IAAF Athletics World Championship, Patience Okon George, failed to make it to the final in the women’s 400m at the Bird Nest Stadium in Beijing, China.

Also yesterday, Tega Odele failed to advance to the next round in the men 200m as he finished sixth in 20.49 seconds.

After the failure by Team Nigeria’s captain, Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor, in the 100m final on Monday, the hope for medal shifted to George in the 400m. But she also failed to rise to the occasion yesterday, placing fourth in her semifinal despite running a Personal Best time of 50.76 seconds.

She was beaten to the ticket by Great Britain’s Christine Ohuruogu, who was first in 50.16 seconds, Stephenie Ann Mcpherson of Jamaica (50.32 seconds) and Phillis Francis of USA (50.50 seconds). While the Nigerian recorded a personal best, Ohuruogu, Mcpherson and Francis ran their season’s best time.

Team Nigeria’s duo of Regina George and Tosin Adeloye had earlier crashed out of the 400m race in the heats.

Today, focus will be on Okagbare once again, as she attempts to make up for the failure in the 100m. Okagbare will compete in the 200m race early this morning at the Bird Nest Stadium.

She is in lane 4, heat 3, and will run alongside Maria Belim Pasaki of Greece, Jenebe Tarmoh (USA), Kimberly Hyacinthe (Canada) and Gloris Hooper of Italy.

Politics / Nigerians To Mark 500 Days Since Boko Haram Schoolgirl Abductions by nairamaverick(m): 7:15am On Aug 26, 2015
Abuja - Relatives of more than 200 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram said they would hold a youth march and candle-lit vigil on Thursday to mark 500 days since the abductions.

Boko Haram fighters stormed the Government Secondary School in the remote town of Chibok in Borno state on April 14 last year, seizing 276 girls who were preparing for end-of-year exams.

Fifty-seven escaped but nothing has been heard of the remaining 219 since May last year, when about 100 of them appeared in a Boko Haram video dressed in Muslim attire and reciting the Koran.

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has since said they have all converted to Islam and been "married off".

The Bring Back Our Girls campaign said Tuesday it would stage a "Chibok Girls Ambassador March" in the capital Abuja on the 500-day anniversary of the kidnappings, followed by a candle-lit procession.

"Since 498 days that they have been missing... we failed them and they were taken and the best thing is for us to have rescued them that very day. And up until now, 498 days after, we still haven't done that," campaign spokesperson Aisha Yesufu told AFP.
The mass abduction brought the brutality of the Islamist insurgency unprecedented worldwide attention and prompted a viral social media campaign demanding their release backed by personalities from US First Lady Michelle Obama to the actress Angelina Jolie.

Western powers, including the US, have offered logistical and military support to Nigeria's rescue effort, but there have been few signs of progress so far.

The military has said it knows where the girls are, but has ruled out a rescue effort because of the dangers to the girls' lives.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who came to power in May, has given his generals three months to crush the insurgency, blamed for killing more than 15 000 people and forcing some 1.5 million to flee their homes since 2009.

"It is important that we actually begin to see visible action that leads to information that will persuade us that the girls are being found," Oby Ezekwesili, a former education minister and also a spokeswoman for the campaign, said late on Monday.

"A lot of intelligence work has been said to be going on and so we are waiting with great anxiety especially considering that a three-month deadline has been given to the new security team to end Boko Haram."

Science/Technology / Xiaomi, The Apple Of China, Is Coming To Nigeria & Other Africa Countries by nairamaverick(m): 7:12am On Aug 24, 2015
Xiaomi isn’t just another Chinese mobile company, it is the most valuable mobile company in China commonly referred to as the Apple of China. It successfully took Apple’s place in China by producing well designed, quality Android devices and took the low end market from Samsung by bringing the price even lower than expected.

Xiaomi can be described as a successful mobile company and it came as no surprise when it announced it is venturing into the fastest growing mobile market in the world. For a company that fully understands the low-end market, it’s safe to assume the company it’s bound to succeed in Africa. Mobile technology enthusiasts have long anticipated this and as a matter of fact, it’s long overdue.

Yezz Mobile, an American company, which came into Nigeria about a couple of months ago failed to do a proper market survey as pointed out by TechRez in a recent article. Looking at Xiaomi’s success in China, however, it is obvious the company reduces profit margin on hardware and profits through software. This enables it to sell quality phones at very affordable prices and that has been key to its success.

The company plans to launch two smartphones in Africa come September: The Red Mi 2 (costing $160) and M4 ($320).

According to an article on Forbes, the phones will be distributed by Mobile In Africa and they are setting up online stores in 14 countries. This strategy is quite similar to how Xiaomi markets its products in China.

RJ van Spaandonk, president of Mobile in Africa said,

I think Xiaomi is currently the one of the most exciting mobile internet brands. It is very well suited to the needs and income levels of the emerging middle classes in Africa. There is a great need for mobile technology in Africa that is of top-notch quality but still affordable. What I found in Xiaomi is a company, and a business model, that can accommodate the needs of African consumers.
Coming to Africa, Xiaomi will have to compete with existing brands to gain relevance. In the first quarter of the year, it was reported that Samsung, Tecno and Apple were the three biggest players in the African mobile market accounting for 55% of all phones sold across Africa.

Infinix also is coming up strong, and with the launch of its first Android One phone which is the first in the whole of Africa, the game is getting even more interesting.

Mavin Records boss, Don Jazzy, has disclosed that he missed working with his former label mate and business partner, D’Banj.

The award-winning music producer said however, he has nothing to lose not working with the singer now.

“Yes and no, I am not losing anything. I have many artistes at hand right now. I’m a producer; my work is to look for artistes.

"If I want to sign more, I will. There is no doubt that he is a huge and successful entertainer, but then there is no glory in actually working with huge people. I like bringing up people," said Don Jazzy when asked if he misses his former Mo'Hits Records partner.

Don Jazzy blamed the media for blowing things out of proportion.

"I keep saying that, the problem you guys think we had was caused by both the press and our fans, because we were alright. D Banj is working, I am working, we can meet up. We can gist, laugh and whatever," he said.
