Politics / Nigeria Airways Ex-workers Hail Buhari’s Re-election by Nairatrend: 3:29pm On Feb 27, 2019
Lagos – Ex-workers of Nigeria Airways Ltd. on Wednesday hailed the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Saturday’s Presidential Election.

The ex-workers of the defunct national carrier thanked Nigerians for re-electing the president who garnered 15.1 million votes to defeat his closest rival, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (Party) who polled 11.2 million votes.
The spokesperson for the ex-workers, Mr Lookman Animashaun told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that Buhari’s victory was well deserved.

Animashaun recalled that Nigeria Airways ex-workers and pensioners had on Feb. 8 staged a mega rally at the Lagos airport to declare their support for Buhari who approved N22.6 billion for part payment of their severance packages.

“We want to congratulate ourselves and all Nigerians for giving another opportunity to Buhari to come back as our president for the next four years.

“We thank the Almighty Allah for being gracious to him to achieve that feat.

“What we implore the president to do is to continue the good job, especially in his anti-corruption fight.

“He should make sure that he strengthens the institutions created to fight corruption like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC).’’

According to Animashaun, pensioners are very happy with the president, urging him to continue to put smiles on their faces by paying their pensions as at when due.

According to him, Buhari should also focus more on the economy in order to make life easier for Nigerians who have put their trust in him.

On the aviation sector, he said the re-election of Buhari had increased the chances of establishing a new national carrier like the defunct Nigeria Airways.

“I think the president should establish the new national carrier in this second term so that the airline can start operations and Nigerians will be happy.

“We want our children and younger ones to benefit from that legacy that Nigeria Airways left behind.

“Also, the president has promised to pay the outstanding entitlements of the Nigeria Airways ex-workers in the next few months and we are very optimistic about it.’’

NAN reports that the former national carrier was liquidated in 2004 by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s government without paying the workers their severance packages as stipulated in extant labour laws.

The workers were paid a fraction of their entitlements by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s regime in 2008 before Buhari approved the payment of N22.6 billion, out of their N45 billion entitlements. (NAN)

Politics / Joke Silva congratulates APC by Nairatrend: 9:21am On Feb 27, 2019
Veteran Nollywood actress, Joke Silva has congratulated President Buhari and leaders of the ruling party, APC, after winning the 2019 presidential election.

Sharing photos of President Buhari, VP Osinbajo, national chairman of APC Adams Oshiomole, and APC national leader Bola Tinubu, she wrote:

‘Congratulations. Well done. League of Extraordinary gentlemen. Now hit the ground running. Consolidate. 4years is a short time. Power needs to be sorted, without it we are going nowhere fast. Apapa port. soo much. God be with you, guide you, give you wisdom’.

President Muhammadu Buhari was earlier today declared the winner of the 2019 presidential election. The announcement was made by Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

President Muhammadu Buhari polled 15,191,847 votes from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the 36 states in the country to defeat his main Challenger Atiku Abubakar who got 11,262,978 votes

“That Muhammadu Buhari of the APC having satisfied and scored the highest number of votes is hereby declared winner and return elected,” Yakubu said.

While the announcement of results was still in progress, the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, called for a halt and rejected results earlier declared. However, their call was not heeded by the electoral body.

Sports / New Signing Brendan Rodgers Finally Reveals Why He Dumped Celtic For Leicester by Nairatrend: 9:05am On Feb 27, 2019
New Leicester City manager, Brendan Rodgers, has admitted he took Celtic “as far as I could”, after his appointment was confirmed on Tuesday.

The Northern Irishman has been named as Claude Puel’s successor, signing a contract until 2022 and will watch his new side take on Brighton later tonight.

Having won seven major trophies with Celtic, Rodgers felt there was little left to achieve in Scottish football and is thrilled to be back in the Premier League.

“It feels great, it’s obviously come very quickly and obviously, of course, over the last few days, but I know I’m joining a fantastic club that has grown so quickly over these last few years.

“I’m just delighted to be here. I think there was a number of reasons [why I joined]. I was certainly in no hurry to leave Celtic.

“Celtic is a club that’s a huge club worldwide, a renowned club, and I loved working with the players there.

“We were on a journey of great success over these last years but when the opportunity came to talk to Leicester and I was able to analyse it, it allowed me to think that I’d probably achieved and taken the club maybe at Celtic as far as I could at this moment.

“The opportunity to speak with Leicester and find out their ambitions and where we can grow the Club and the training facility. Of course, the big attraction for me is working with the players.

“It’s a young squad, a very dynamic squad, it’s got huge potential and you’ve got some of the players with good experience also. There was a number of factors in being here and, like I say, I’m absolutely delighted,” Rodgers told the club’s official website.

Business / Oil price rises as uncertainty over Nigeria elections, Venezuela tension mounts by Nairatrend: 7:15am On Feb 27, 2019
AS Nigeria’s stock market turn positive with significant capital gains ahead of official conclusion of the general elections, oil prices, yesterday shot up, apparently over uncertainty over the outcome of the election’s as well as the political tension in Venezuela. Also the pressure on oil price appears to be coming from a positive sentiment over United States–China talks.

International Brent crude oil futures were at $67.28 a barrel, up 16 cents, or 0.24 percent, from their last close, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at $57.39 per barrel, up 13 cents, or 0.23 percent, from their last price.

“Risk appetite across global markets should improve as President Trump extends the deadline of trade talks with China,” Harry Tchilinguirian, global oil strategist at BNP Paribas in London, said.

“Supply risk is ever present with Venezuelan tensions brewing a notch higher, the National Oil Corporation in Libya refusing to start production at the El Sharara field,” he added, while also citing uncertainty over elections in top African oil exporter, Nigeria. U.S. sanctions on Iranian and Venezuelan crude plus involuntary curbs in Nigeria and Libya are lending support to efforts to balance the market and support prices, efforts led by member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and non-OPEC producers such as Russia. Further brightening the global economic picture, U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday signalled a potentially bruising trade war with China could be averted.

Trump tweeted he would postpone a March 01, 2019 deadline for higher tariffs on Chinese goods and looked forward to a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping when a Sino-American deal was sealed.

Goldman Sachs analysts said that “the near-term outlook for oil is modestly bullish over the next two to three months”, but added that the outlook for later in 2019 was weaker due to a surge in U.S. exports and an “an increasingly uncertain economic, policy and geopolitical backdrop”.

Meanwhile, Trump resumed his attacks on the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, saying the world is too fragile to handle a price hike and urging the cartel to “relax and take it easy.” Trump’s war of words with the OPEC punctuated big price swings in 2018, as he pressured the group to keep the taps open to help consumers. The president’s intervention follows a price rally of about 25 percent this year due to production cuts from OPEC and its allies, diminishing fears about the economic impact of the US-China trade war and Washington’s imposition of sanctions on Venezuelan oil shipments.

“We might see a less aggressive stance on supply cuts from the Saudis, this might stop them from cutting deeper,” said Giovanni Staunovo, an analyst at UBS Group AG in Zurich.

“But I still think Saudi Arabia has the incentive to see higher oil prices, and deliver the cuts agreed in December, when OPEC and its partners agreed to remove 1.2 million barrels a day’’, he added.

NOPEC risk

The risk to OPEC comes in the form of the so-called ‘No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels Act’, or NOPEC, an act resurrected by US lawmakers that proposes making the organization subject to the Sherman antitrust law, used more than a century ago to break up the oil empire of John Rockefeller. Congressional support for the bill intensified last year as oil prices neared a four-year high, and Trump publicly blamed OPEC for high pump prices in the US In the past, the White House has opposed the NOPEC legislation – both George W Bush and Barack Obama threatened to use their veto.

OPEC’s concern now is that Trump may break with his predecessors, and angering him by not going “easy,” as he requested in his tweet, raises the stakes. Trump, before becoming president, didn’t just support the NOPEC bill, he was a cheerleader for it. “We can start by suing OPEC for violating antitrust laws,” he wrote in his 2011 book “Time to Get Tough: Making America #1 Again.”

Whether by coincidence or design, Trump’s latest tweet comes on the eve of International Petroleum Week, which opens in London on Tuesday. The annual event gathers the who’s who of the oil market and industry for several days of conferences, deal-making and cocktail parties.
