Now that you're pregnant, it's more important than ever to take care of yourself both physically and emotionally. From check-ups at the clinic to planning your baby’s birth, the right antenatal care (ANC) will help you to have a safe and healthy pregnancy. Here’s what you need to know. What kind of antenatal care do I need? Antenatal care (ANC) is the healthcare and support you have while you’re pregnant. It will help to make sure you and your baby are well throughout your pregnancy. Getting ANC is the most important step you can take to having a healthy pregnancy. So as soon as you know you’re pregnant, start your ANC by contacting our friendly and supportive MSI providers. Your care will include regular check-ups, although these change as your pregnancy progresses. At the start you may have blood tests to check for any health issues that could affect your pregnancy or your baby. Later on, you’ll have your blood pressure measured every visit and you may be asked to do urine tests to check for signs of a pregnancy condition called pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia can cause serious problems for you and your baby if it isn’t monitored and treated. About halfway through your pregnancy you’ll be offered a scan to see how your baby is developing. Although the scan is done for medical reasons, it’s very exciting to see your baby for the first time. At your antenatal appointments you can ask your provider any questions you have. Write them down so you don’t forget. You can also speak with someone in confidence if you need extra support. Use this opportunity to get help if you’re experiencing domestic violence or emotional abuse. Which foods should I eat for a healthy pregnancy? The more varied your diet is, the more likely you are to get the nutrients you and your growing baby need. Try to eat some of these foods every day: Fruit and vegetables. Protein-rich foods (beans, pulses, fish, eggs, meat – but not liver - poultry and nuts) Starchy foods (potatoes, yams, bread and grains – wholegrains are healthier) Dairy foods (pasteurised milk, cheese and yogurt) Should I take a vitamin supplement? When you’re pregnant, there are some nutrients that are hard to get from food alone. So all pregnant women should take a folic acid tablet a day especially for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Folic acid is a vitamin that prevents a problem with your baby’s spine. You may also need extra vitamin D and iron to help your baby grow. Your MSI provider can give you more information about supplements. What’s not safe to eat in pregnancy? Some foods aren’t safe while you’re pregnant. They include: unpasteurised milks and cheeses raw or undercooked meat certain types of fish including shark, marlin and swordfish It’s not just what you’re eating but also how you store and prepare food that is important. During pregnancy your immune system doesn't work as well as usual, so you need to be extra careful about food hygiene. These tips will help you stay safe: Wash your hands before cooking and eating and keep your kitchen clean Use safe water Store raw food away from cooked food Cook food thoroughly, particularly poultry and meats Don’t leave cooked or fresh food out of the fridge for more than two hours Wash fruit and veg thoroughly, especially if you’re eating them raw Is it safe to exercise in pregnancy? Waiting for your period to arrive can be agonizing if you think you might be pregnant. Whether a positive pregnancy test would be good news or not, you’ll probably find yourself rushing to the loo at every real or imagined sign of your period, and on high alert for any symptoms of pregnancy. So if you’re wondering if it’s time to buy that pregnancy test, here are some of the early pregnancy signs to watch out for. What are the early signs of pregnancy? The most obvious sign of pregnancy is a missed period. But even before your period is due, it’s possible that you might notice some pregnancy symptoms. One of the earliest signs is a tingling or prickling sensation in your breasts, particularly around your nipples. Some women get this feeling when they have been pregnant for just one week. Other signs and symptoms of pregnancy to watch out for include: Changes to the way your breasts look and feel In the early weeks of pregnancy you may notice that your breasts look bigger. They might feel lumpy and tender to touch too. Your nipples can look more prominent and the ring of skin around your nipples, called the areola, might look plumper and darker. Veins in your breasts may start to look more prominent and noticeable as well. Nausea and vomiting You probably know this as morning sickness, but it can happen at any time of day. Nausea can start just a few weeks into your pregnancy and can last for several months. Foods and drinks that you used to enjoy may turn your stomach now and make you feel sick. Even just the smell of food cooking might be enough to make you queasy. You might start to salivate more and get a metallic taste in your mouth too. By Marie Stopes Nigeria If you’re worried you’ve caught a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI), you won’t be alone. STIs, which are also known as STDs (sexually transmitted diseases), are very common. Some STIs have symptoms: you might notice a change in your vaginal discharge, a rash, or an itch. A boil or warts in your vaginal area could also be a sign of an STI. But others have no symptoms at all. The good news is most STIs are treatable, especially if you detect them early. How will I know if I have an STI? The truth is, you might not. Lots of people don’t know they have an STI. That’s because some of the most common ones don’t give you symptoms, or the symptoms may take a while to show. So if you think you might have been at risk of catching an STI, the only way to be completely sure is to have a test. When women do get STI symptoms, they might include: Click on the link below to read more https://www.mariestopes.org.ng/help-advice/do-i-have-a-sexually-transmitted-infection/?currentPageId=13757&page=1&filterCategory=&filterDate=

Leo is just Godsent, the man of my dreams. The love I need to heal from my past relationship. He is dark, handsome and had this athletic body. A very ‘okay’ guy. Our hook-up was just natural, and it wasn’t long before we knew we liked each other. My kind of guy, a ladies’ man – hardworking, corporate, funny, and decent. The one guy to one chic sort of person. It was all pleasantness. His last relationship ended six months ago, and both of us seemed just ready for each other. When the sex began, it became even more exciting. Our chemistry aligned. I always stayed cautious of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). So, I insisted on condoms use in the first month. He did not object. I was relaxed and happy. He was just ‘over-faithful’, loved me and showed it. Sometimes, I would wonder if he could have an STI. He didn’t show any behavioural disposition and was just too healthy to have one. Being a medical professional (pharmacist), he certainly must have been protecting himself all his life. He doesn’t drink, smoke nor roll with bad friends. Subconsciously, we began skipping the use of condoms and occasionally even take it out at the heat of things. We knew our risks, but we had screened each other with our spiritual and laboratory eyes. For me, Leo must be clean. On my own, I would usually urinate and wash after sex. I relied on my calendar to calculate my safe periods and used ‘Backup” emergency contraceptive whenever I feel I could get pregnant. A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Marie Stopes International Organisation Nigeria (MSION) has reached seven million women with family planning services in 10 years in Nigeria. This was made known by the Country Director, Marie Stopes Nigeria, Effiom Nyong Effiom. He made this known in Abuja at a gala night on Thursday, October 31, 2019, to mark the organisation’s 10th anniversary in the country. With headquarters in London, MSION is part of the Marie Stopes International Global Partnership, a social enterprise which operates in more than 37 countries across the globe, providing contraception services. Its mission is to ensure that families and women have children by choice, not chance. Effiom said “MSION has grown in leaps and bounds, with more than 29 million family planning services delivered to 7,239,147 persons in Nigeria as a result of the organisation’s health system strengthening efforts in the public and private health sectors.” He added that the organisation, operating in 36 states of the Federation and the FCT, trained more than 6000 public healthcare providers and 750 private healthcare providers in Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) information and commodities. He added that the organisation operates a toll-free hotline contact centre to provide SRH information, counselling and referrals as part of its continuum care. “The contact numbers are 0800-00-22252 (toll-free ), 22252 (charges apply) and WhatsApp/SMS 0908-00-22252,” he said. The country director said that the anniversary was intended to mark critical milestones in providing Sexual and Reproductive Health, including family planning and child spacing to Nigeria’s high unmet need. His words: “we will use the anniversary to promote our unique services, products and brand. “Our mission is to ensure that families and women have children by choice, not chance. “Our vision is to create a world in which every birth is wanted. We believe in a world where every mother can enjoy a wanted and healthy pregnancy and childbirth; every child can survive beyond their fifth birthday. “Family planning is not all about population control, but the ability to make women to make better choices about their contraceptive right.” Effiom therefore, called on the media and well-informed Nigerians to help in educating women that children should be choice, not chance. “Our population is growing, women will want family planning services, if we are able to meet every woman that needs contraceptive commodities, we will be able to manage our growth, ” he said. The Country Director, Marie STopes Nigeria also called on government and international partners to invest more in the area of family planning services, noting that sex education was a right that must be afforded to every girl child. He explained that the role of mothers was very important as they are the first points of contact with children According to him, if parents do not play their part properly, the different media will give them the information. On her part, Sue Holland, Regional Director for West and Central Africa at Marie Stopes International, who said that family planning was the smallest programme in Nigeria, added that the organisation had done a lot in the country in the area of family planning services. She said more effort was needed for the programme to reach more women in the next 10 years. According to her, Marie Stopes Nigeria is an active participant in the Sexual and Reproductive Health sector in Nigeria, a key trusted implementing partner of the Federal and States Ministries of Health. Awards were also given to people who played important roles during the period of review.

Government has been called upon to create an enabling environment for more females to access contraception services in Nigeria. Dr Effiom Nyong Effiom, Country Director, Marie Stopes International made the call in Maiduguri on Thursday while speaking during the commemoration of World Contraception Day. According to Effiom, allowing more women access to contraceptives and family planning services will reduce the number of women dying at childbirth and girls dropping out of school. He said, “The usefulness of contraception to family planning, disease and population control is huge. So, governments need to free the barriers hindering access to contraception services and family planning for women. “We need to see fewer girls drop out of school, and a decrease in the number of women dying at childbirth. Contraception has the power to not just transform personal lives but that of the community. “Every woman has the right to choose her own future through family planning and if many women should have access to contraceptives, it will be of great help,” he said. Region said, his organization, Marie Stopes Nigeria would continue to provide information that would support women and young people in making informed decision about their reproductive health. The World Contraception Day is observed annually to draw global attention to contraception, especially young people’s need to access contraceptive and reproductive health information.

The Publicity Director of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State, Apeh Peter has revealed that Governor Samuel Ortom defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because he was under pressure to pay salary arrears to workers in the state. According to Apeh who made the revelation on Saturday, the leadership of the APC in Benue State gave Ortom an ultimatum to clear up all outstanding salaries before the 2019 polls, but the governor couldn't meet the deadline and decided to join the PDP where he would be accepted not minding the unpaid wages. His words: ''He couldn't stay because the pressure on him from the party leadership to ensure all salary arrears are cleared before the 2019 elections became tougher than he could handle. ''So he decided to choke into where nonpayment of salaries is celebrated. PDP.'' Recall that Ortom dumped the ruling party for PDP barely nine days after announcing that the leadership of the party gave him a red card. A middle aged girl got more than she bargained for on Sunday afternoon after she publicly came out to challenge the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom. The victim simply identified as Blessing Idoko reportedly stood up while the governor was addressing the congregation during his visit to the Redeemed Christin Church of God, Behind NUJ House, Makurdi, to ask what many believe to be a harmless question on why there has been untold hardship in the land since he came on board as the CEO of the food basket state. Miss Idoko was quoted by multiple sources as saying that the Governor has betrayed the trust and the mandate bestowed on him by the good people of Benue state. Angered by her unholy outburst, the visibly furious governor reportedly ordered his security aide to 'take care of the situation’. In what could be tagged as overlousness of one of his security aides, he bundled the lady while being assisted by others, threw her out of the church, while she was being beaten blue black by the aides.
