The group began as the Osmond Brothers and was originally a quartet. However, like the Jacksons, the second youngest brother, Donny, joined the group and became the lead singer. The group’s name changed to The Osmonds after Donny joined them.
The Osmonds was the only act from the family from the late 1960s into the early 1970s.
Marie Osmond launched her solo career in 1973 and she soon teamed up with her brother Donny to create the very famous act Donny & Marie. Donny & Marie became the most famous act of the family from the late 1970s into the early 1980s. This was helped in no small part by their very popular TV show, the Donny & Marie Show.
Both Donny and Marie also had successful solo careers. Donny sang rock music and Marie sang country music.
Jimmy Osmond was the youngest member of the family and he started his career by singing children’s songs. He was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the youngest person to have a number 1 song in the UK when his recording of “Long Haired Lover from Liverpool” got to the top of the charts. One of his songs was certified gold when he was only 5 years old and he became the first Osmond to have a gold record.
Jimmy often appeared on the Donny & Marie Show when he was older. He often made mischief and played pranks with his monsters and muppets. Sometimes, when the older people did not allow him to take the spotlight, his monsters and muppets would appear and crowd out the older people so that Jimmy would be the only one on the stage. He also often performed comedy skits or sang songs with the special guest. My abiding memory of Jimmy is with his muppets and monsters and that’s why I have not posted any videos of him, because I haven’t found any with his monsters until now. Here is a video of Jimmy performing on the Donny & Marie Show with one of his muppets. (Donnie & Marie also perform “She’s A Little Bit Country, He’s A Little Bit Rock N Roll” after Jimmy’s performance).
Jimmy also had a successful acting career when he became a teenager in the late 1970s and 1980s. He acted in several movies and one of them, The Great Brain, became a regular holiday and weekend movie on NTA2 Channel 5 in the early 1980s.
Jimmy also acted in TV series and he famously acted in the blockbuster TV series, “Fame”.
I have written about Fame on this thread before, but the series is so wonderful that I must write about it again.
Have you ever watched Project Fame? Well, you can easily understand Fame if you’ve watched Project Fame (I have a feeling that the basic idea for Project Fame was gotten from Fame). The movie and TV series are about a secondary school for the performing arts. It’s based in New York and the students learn how to play musical instruments, how to sing, how to dance (both classical and contemporary), etc.
My favourite characters were the characters from the movie and the beginning of the TV show (Leroy, Coco and Bruno) and of course my favourite teacher was Mr Shorovsky, but there were also many famous people that acted in the series.
Debbie Allen (who produced many very popular situation comedies in the 1980s, 90s and 2000s, like Different World and Cosby Show) was a teacher on the show and Janet Jackson and Jimmy Osmond were students. Jimmy was a student for one semester in the early part of the series, while Janet was a student years later. Fame was shown in the US from 1982-1987 and it was shown by Lagos Television from 1982-1989 and occasionally from 1989-1991. Here is one of Jimmy’s performances on the show.
(This clip begins with the world famous theme song, but it’s sung by the students rather than Irene Cara and then we go straight to Jimmy’s performance).
naptu2: Janet Jackson told CNN's Anderson Cooper that she didn't enjoy acting in Fame. She said that she was going through a lot of problems in her life when she acted in the show. She had gotten married to James DeBarge (El DeBarge's brother) at the age of 18 and nobody knew about it. Her husband was also using drugs at the time. She said that her co-stars on the show were nice, but that they were always teasing her. Sometimes she would come down for breakfast and her breakfast would be gone and sometimes they would smoke Indian Hemp outside her window and it would give her headaches.
The first video is of one of her performances on the show. It was a duet.
Did you watch Cadbury's Breakfast Television in the 1990s and 2000s? Do you remember a sitcom in which LL Cool J rented out part of his house to a woman who had two kids? Well, the person that played the part of the woman was Debbie Allen. Debbie Allen started out as a famous dancer, choreographer, singer and actress. She later became a very successful TV producer and she produced most of the episodes of A Different World. She has also acted in Grey's Anatomy and an uncountable number of other TV Shows.
Debbie Allen was the dance teacher at the school (she also choreographed most of the dance routines on the show) and the second video is of a dance lesson. One of the students got injured and Leroy suggested that Janet Jackson should take her place.
In my eyes, Project Fame began with. . . Irene Cara in 1980.
I'm gonna live forever! I'm gonna learn how to fly (High)! I feel it coming together. People will see me and cry (Fame)! I'm gonna make it to heaven! Light up the sky like a flame(Fame)! I'm gonna live forever! Baby, remember my name! (Remember, remember, remember, remember)
Every Saturday morning on LTV (later moved to 7:30pm on weekdays).
Do you also remember
What a feeling!
?
And that's how Project Fame started.
naptu2: I haven't been able to stop humming this song since I posted it here yesterday. Maybe this will help. From.
Fame (The movie) - 1980 Fame (The song) - 1980 Fame (The tv series) - 1982-1987 (1983-1990 on Lagos Television).
Let's join Leroy, Coco (Irene Cara), Cleo (Janet Jackson) all the students and their teachers, Lydia the dance teacher (Debbie Allen [Good Times, Roots, Cosby Show, Different World, etc), Mr Shorofsky the music teacher, etc at the New York High School For The Performing Arts.
The American singer and actress was best known for her title track in the 1980 film Fame, as well as co-writing and singing the smash hit Flashdance... What a Feeling, for which she won an Oscar and a Grammy.
She later starred in films opposite Clint Eastwood and Tatum O'Neal.
Cara's publicist, who announced her death, said she died at home in Florida but the cause is "currently unknown".
Born in 1959 in the Bronx, New York City, Cara was the youngest of five children and started her career on Spanish-language TV. Her father was Puerto Rican and her mother, Cuban-American.
Having recorded music as a child, both in Spanish and English, she went on to appear in a number of on-and-off Broadway musicals.
But it was in 1980 that Cara shot to fame when she bagged the role of Coco Hernandez - and sung Fame's title track.
Her performance earned her a Best Actress nomination at the 1981 Golden Globe Awards.
Cara later co-wrote and sang the vocals for Flashdance… What A Feeling, from the 1983 blockbuster Flashdance, and won a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance as well as an Academy Award for Best Original Song.
naptu2: Since that guy doesn't want to play, I am going to post my answers here.
As I said, there are many prominent politicians that have defected to the Labour Party since Peter Obi moved there. Some of them have moved to the Labour Party because they are part of Peter Obi's structure, some moved because, although they are not part of Peter Obi's structure, they believe in his message, some moved to the Labour Party because they see an opportunity to build structures in a smaller party (something that they could not do in their previous parties) and some have moved because they lost out in the politics of their previous parties.
I will begin with the people that I mentioned in my previous posts. These are people that are part of Peter Obi's structure.
Oseloka Obaze worked as a diplomat in the Nigerian Foreign Service from 1982 till 1991. He then worked for the United Nations from 1991 till 2012. He was appointed secretary to the Anambra State Government by Governor Peter Obi in 2012. He was the PDP candidate in the Anambra governorship elections in 2017 and Peter Obi campaigned heavily for him.
Valentine Ozigbo is a former banker who was made CEO of Transcorp Hotels PLC and then CEO of the Transcorp Group. He was the PDP candidate in the 2021 Anambra governorship elections and Peter Obi campaigned heavily for him.
Valentine Obienyem is a lawyer and a journalist who has served as special assistant to many ministers and heads of government agencies. He was special assistant on new media to Governor Peter Obi
These others are not part of Peter Obi's structure, but they have defected to the Labour Party.
Dr Doyin Okupe: was a House of Representatives candidate of the NPN in 1983. He was the national publicity secretary of the NRC in the early 1990s. He was a media assistant to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan. He was an Ogun State governorship aspirant on the platform of the PDP. In fact, he was a presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP until a few months ago when he defected to the Labour Party and became the director general of Peter Obi's campaign organisation.
The guy asked for 5 people that have defected to the Labour Party and who have also previously won elections. Here they are.
Victor Umeh was a member of the PDP at the beginning of the 4th Republic, but he left the PDP in 2001 to take up positions in the APGA. He held various positions in APGA and rose to become the national chairman of the party. He was national chairman of APGA when Peter Obi became governor of Anambra State. In fact, it was during his tenure that the party had two governors, Peter Obi of Anambra and Rochas Okorocha of Imo. He was also a member of the 2014 National Conference.
He left the chairmanship of APGA in 2015 and in 2018 he was elected and sworn in as the senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District.
Victor Umeh is currently the Labour Party candidate in the 2023 Anambra Central senatorial election.
Tony Nwoye is a medical doctor who was Anambra State chairman of the PDP. He was elected into the Federal House of Representatives to represent Anambra East/West constituency in 2011. He was the PDP candidate in the 2013 Anambra governorship election and was also the APC candidate in the 2017 Anambra governorship election.
Dr Tony Nwoye is currently the Labour Party candidate in the 2023 Anambra North senatorial election.
Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi was once a member of APGA and the PDP. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2015 to represent Owerri Municipal/Owerri North/Owerri West Federal Constituency. He was elected to the Senate in 2019 to represent Imo East Senatorial District. He is currently the Labour Party candidate in the 2023 Imo East senatorial election.
Daniel Nanbol is the member of the Plateau State House of Assembly representing Langtang North Central district. He has also defected to the Labour Party.
George Ozodinobi Ibezimako was elected to represent Njikoka/Anaocha/Dunukofia Federal Constituency in the Federal House of Representatives on the platform of APGA in 2003. He was an aspirant for the same position on the platform of the PDP just a few months ago. He resigned from the PDP and defected to the Labour Party and is currently the Labour Party candidate in the 2023 election for the same post.
Eniitankorede: Give me five names that have won elections in the past among those people? Many of them are small political appointees. That’s why they are featherweight.
That's very easy to do. I can even name more than 5, but there's one condition. I am not a fan of going round in circles. Promise that you will not shift the goalpost if I name 5.
Your condition is that I should name 5 people that defected to the Labour Party that have won elections before. You are not going to add any other conditions when I name the 5 and you are not going to try and divert the discussion to some other topic. Is that a deal?
Eniitankorede: You have struggled to produce the names of few featherweights as defectors. I am even surprised you made attempts at all. Your fellow sojourners believed there are no defectors because Peter Obi no dey give shishi. These defectors you mentioned, if they were not given shishi, what was there motivation? If they believed Obi would win, why aren’t notable politicians joining the bandwagon? There’s no way you will argue your way out of this. Peter Obi and LP are bad market, like the leprous fingers of a leper. That’s the main reason for avoiding LP. Because every politician wants to be in a winning party, not party of fantasy and hooliganism that has no hope of winning election.
Hahahahahahahahaha
I didn't struggle anything. These are people that are well known and it is well known that they have defected to the Labour Party. That makes your claim that nobody has defected to the Labour Party false. C'est fini. The rest of your post is just political nonsense (who the heck are "my fellow sojourners and where are they sojourning? What the hell does "giving shishi" have to do with the fact that the premise of your title is false? ).
Eniitankorede: This is the question on the minds of many people and myself. Even in southeast we never hear of any notable politicians defecting to or supporting Labour Party and Obi. They are treating Obi like a leper. Why is that so? Are they afraid or what? Can anyone explain why Labour Party is being treated like a leper.
Let's start with your headline. You wrote, "Why Is No One Defecting To Labour Party"? The fact of the matter is that people are defecting to the Labour Party.
Now, you know that people are defecting to the Labour Party, that's why you qualified the statement in the body of your post. You then wrote, "Even in southeast we never hear of any notable politicians defecting to or supporting Labour Party and Obi". What is your definition of "notable politicians".
There are many variations of this theme (which has gone viral in the past few months), but it is not really true. I believe that it is a ploy to make it seem as if nobody is supporting Peter Obi, because it is quite easy to mention people that have defected to the Labour Party in order to support Peter Obi.
I wrote this in October.
naptu2: Some people claim that people who worked with Bola Tinubu (when he was a governor) are in his campaign team and people who worked with Atiku Abubakar (when he was vice president) are in his campaign team, but that people who worked with Peter Obi are no where to be found.
I am shocked that some supporters of Peter Obi are accepting this argument, despite the fact that it is totally false.
Yes, the argument is totally false and I will begin by explaining why it appears to be true, despite the fact that it is completely false.
Both Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu have had structures in the Federal Government, while Peter Obi has never really had structures in the Federal Government. Atiku was the vice president from 1999 till 2007 and therefore he was able to nominate members of his structure into positions within the Federal Government.
Bola Tinubu was one of the two main people that formed the APC and the APC has had control of the Federal Government since 2015. Therefore, he has been able to nominate members of his structure into the Federal Government.
The result of this is that members of Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu's structures are more famous than the members of Peter Obi's structure. Therefore, people who are not well informed will not know the members of Peter Obi's structure.
Oseloka Obaze was secretary to the Anambra State Government when Peter Obi was governor and he is one of the key players in Obi's presidential campaign team. How can you say that people who worked with Peter Obi are not in his campaign team? Chief Obaze was also the PDP governorship candidate in the 2017 Anambra Governorship Election and Peter Obi campaigned heavily for him.
Valentine Obienyem was special assistant on media and publicity to Governor Peter Obi and today he is a key member of Mr Obi's presidential campaign team.
Peter Obi also heavily campaigned for Valentine Ozigbo, the governorship candidate of the PDP in the 2021 Anambra Governorship election and Mr Ozigbo dumped the PDP and moved over to the Labour Party in order to support Mr Obi.
There are also many other people who have been part of Peter Obi's structure for many years and who are presently working for his election as president of Nigeria. It's just that they are not as well known as the people in Atiku Abubakar and Bola Tinubu's structures.
In addition to the people listed above, I can also include:
Dr Doyin Okupe: was a House of Representatives candidate of the NPN in 1983. He was the national publicity secretary of the NRC in the early 1990s. He was a media assistant to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan. He was an Ogun State governorship aspirant on the platform of the PDP. In fact, he was a presidential aspirant on the platform of the PDP until a few months ago when he defected to the Labour Party and became the director general of Peter Obi's campaign organisation.
Victor Umeh was the former national chairman of APGA. He also defected to the Labour Party. He is also a former senator.
Professor Pat Utomi is also a member of the Labour Party and in fact, he is a member of Peter Obi's campaign team.
Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi, a current senator from Imo State, defected to the Labour Party from the PDP.
There have been members of state houses of assembly and other politicians that have defected to the Labour Party.
