On December 7th, 2025 several soldiers of the Benin Armed Forces led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri announced the overthrow of Beninese president Patrice Talon on national television, following an attack on Talon's residence in Cotonou and the residences of other top-ranking military officials.
The Beninoise Foreign Ministry sent a note verbal to the Nigerian Foreign Ministry, requesting for air support and then President Talon sent a direct request to President Tinubu for ground troops.
The Beninoise Republican Guards had already repelled the coupists, but the government felt that innocent civilians would have been negatively affected if Beninoise forces had fought directly with the coupists, so they activated Ecowas agreements and requested for air support from Nigeria and Cote D'Ivoire.
The coupists had retreated to a military base that had armoured vehicles, so Nigerian and Ivorian fighter jets attacked the armoured vehicles. Ivorian special forces also entered Benin to assist in dealing with the coupists.
naptu2: Sir Dauda Jawara was prime minister of Gambia from 1962 (before independence in 1965) till 1970 (Queen Elizabeth II was head of state). He became president of Gambia in 1970.
Sir Dauda Jawara was overthrown in a coup in 1994 and Lieutenant Yahya Jammeh (as he then was) became head of state.
Jammeh transitioned from being a military head of state to a civilian elected president in 1996. He kept changing the constitution to extend his tenure.
Jammeh lost the 2016 presidential election to Adama Barrow, but refused to leave office. Instead he sacked the electoral commission.
ECOWAS told Jammeh to leave office, but he refused.
President Buhari ordered Nigerian Navy warship, NNS Centenary, to Gambia and Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jets flew over Banjul. Senegalese soldiers also massed on the border, ready to invade Gambia and remove Jammeh.
Jammeh got the message and went into exile.
Gambians took to social media to mourn and thank President Buhari when they heard of his (Buhari's) death.
It was an exciting morning and I was trying to figure out what was happening. Many things were happening in different places at the same time and I was monitoring BBC World Service and Nigerian media to try and figure out what the hell was happening.
1) Nigeria ordered NNS Aradu to Equatorial Guinea to go and protect the country. It seems the order came from President Obasanjo himself.
2) There were rumours of a coup or attempted coup in Equatorial Guinea and some soldiers had been arrested.
3) Some people had been arrested in a Zimbabwean airport. It seemed like President Mugabe had been informed about it and he had called Presidents Obasanjo and Mbeki. The BBC said that Simon Mann was one of the people that were arrested.
4) Some other people had been arrested in South Africa.
5) There were rumours of an investigation in the UK, but nobody had been arrested.
How were all these things connected?
I'll tell you.
Equatorial Guinea was a poor country near Calabar. The country is actually split into 2 parts, Bioko, which is an island in the Atlantic Ocean (not far from Calabar and Cameroon) and Rio Muni, which is on the mainland and borders Cameroon and the Atlantic Ocean.
Back in the 1980s Nigerians often joked that the Nigerian Government should invade Equatorial Guinea and make it the 20th state. Equatorial Guinea was small, poor and there were many Nigerians in the country.
I told you about what happened in 1987. Nigerian military intelligence discovered that South Africans were working on a project in Equatorial Guinea and the government demanded that the Equato-Guineans should expel the South Africans. Admiral Aikhomu made a very strong statement and this inspired Vanguard Newspaper to write a fantastic fictional article about a war between Nigeria and South Africa. Anyway, Babangida sent General Ike Nwachukwu to talk to the Equato-Guineans and the South Africans were expelled.
Oil
Equatorial Guinea, which had been a small and poor country, discovered oil in 1999 or 2000 and it suddenly became rich. Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria signed an agreement on how they would divide the oil.
The issue in 2004.
Which brings us to the main issue.
A group of British businessmen, including Mark Thatcher, son of former British Prime Minister Baroness Margaret Thatcher, decided that they wanted Equatorial Guinea's oil money. They hired some mercenaries (led by Simon Mann) and planned to stage a coup in order to take over the country. They also bribed some Equato-Guinean soldiers to assist them.
Simon Mann was a former British soldier who created a mercenary company after retiring from service.
He went to South Africa and hired some South African mercenaries to take part in the coup. They flew to Zimbabwe to get more men and equipment and that's when Zimbabwean security discovered that they were armed. The mercenaries were arrested. The Zimbabweans discovered that it was part of a coup plot and Mugabe called Obasanjo and Mbeki.
President Obasanjo ordered the Nigerian Navy's flagship, NNS Aradu, to Equatorial Guinea to protect the island. Nigerian soldiers were also sent there.
Some of the mercenaries that were in South Africa were also arrested.
The Equato-Guineans also arrested the soldiers that were going to take part in the coup.
The mercenaries in Zimbabwe and South Africa were eventually extradited to Equatorial Guinea to stand trial. Simon Mann was jailed.
All of these happened in 2004.
Simon Mann gave an interview in which he claimed that senior British figures knew about the coup plot. The British media also conducted investigation that showed that MI6 and the CIA knew about the coup plot beforehand, but decided to do nothing.
Years later, Simon Mann was pardoned by the president of Equatorial Guinea (he had been ill) and set free.
Unfortunately I can't find my old post about Sao Tome, but let me tell you about my abiding memory.
There was a coup in Sao Tome and President Obasanjo gave the coupists a deadline to surrender. The coupists surrendered and my abiding memory is of Nigeria 001 flying into Sao Tome and Obasanjo coming down the steps while holding the hand of the Sao Tomean president (the Sao Tomean president had sought refuge in Nigeria).
Nigeria Urges Sao Tome and Principe Coup Leaders to Return Power to Civilians
2003-07-17
Nigeria is trying to convince the leaders of the military coup in neighboring Sao Tome and Principe to return power to civilians. The two countries share ownership of rich oil reserves in the Gulf of Guinea.
Rebel soldiers in Sao Tome and Principe say Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo spoke with their leader, Major Fernando Pereira, Thursday about arranging for the visit of a Nigerian envoy.
The coup took place early Wednesday as Sao Tome President Fradique de Menezes was in Nigeria attending an economic summit.
Mr. Obasanjo addressed the summit later on Wednesday and added his voice to mounting international condemnation of the coup.
"May I express our heartfelt support for the president of Sao Tome and Principe who is here with us." he said. "In his absence some members of the armed forces attempted to seize power. We condemn such act in the strongest term possible and we advise the military adventurers to call off this dangerous action and hand over power to the elected president."
Nigeria has also warned the coup leaders against harming any of its citizens. In the capital Sao Tome, most civilians returned to normal activities on Thursday.
The rebellious soldiers have also given assurances they will not harm senior government officials. They say they are holding the officials in an air conditioned room.
Machine gun wielding mutineers met no resistance Wednesday when they took over all key government buildings as well as the airport.
The mutineers say they acted to save the tiny island state from social and economic decline. They accused the current elected leadership of being elitist and corrupt.
Sao Tome and Principe is one of the world's poorest countries, but studies suggest it may have vast oil deposits in its territorial waters.
Many foreign oil companies have already expressed interest in developing several oil blocks jointly owned by Sao Tome and Nigeria. The start of international bidding has sharpened political rivalries.
Sao Tome's elected government has insisted it needs international help to protect its oil interests. It has even invited the United States to set up a naval base on the islands.

The Nigerian troops took the place of 600 British Marine Commandos who were called in to keep the peace following the Tanganyika Army mutiny in January.
President Nyerere inspected a Nigerian guard of honour and afterwards took the salute at a march past, led by the battalion's commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Yakubu Pam.
Accompanying Mr Nyerere were the Tanganyika vice president, Mr Rashidi Kawawa; the Tanganyika Minister for External Affairs and Defence, Mr Oscar Kambona; and the Nigerian High Commissioner, Mr N.A.Martin.

The union was influenced by Julius Nyerere's principle of Ujamaa, a key component of which stressed the need for "territorial nationalism." The country was re-named Tanzania within a year of the union.

Monday, September 21st 1964. Soundless footage of President Julius Nyerere of Tanganyika honouring the officers and men of the 3rd Battalion of the Nigerian Army at a farewell parade at State House in Dar-es-Salaam.
The battalion, which was led by Lieutenant Colonel Yakubu Pam, had taken over the policing role undertaken by British Royal Marine commandos in April. The British commandos were called in by the Tanganyikan government after the Tanganyikan army mutinied in January. The Nigerian Army was given the role after an emergency meeting of the organisation of African Unity (OAU) in Dar-es-Salaam in February.
During the assignment, Lieutenant Colonel Pam oversaw policing as well as training duties. On September 1st, 1,100 recruits for the new Tanganyikan Army completed a three-month training programme. Those soldiers, together with troops of the 2nd battalion Tanganyikan Rifles were expected to more than make up for the loss of the 1st Battalion which was disbanded after the mutiny.
The intention was that the Nigerian soldiers would be replaced after six months by another contingent of African soldiers from either Algeria or Ethiopia, but the Tanzanian authorities decided that this was no longer necessary.
During the ceremony, President Nyerere presented Lt. Col. Pam with ivory horns and the colonel returned the favour by presenting the president with a shield.
The Government of Benin made two requests and the Government of Nigeria approved.
The constitution permits the president to deploy troops, but he must send a request to the Nationap Assembly within 7 days, which he has done and the National Assembly approved the request today.
REPORT OF PURPORTED SHOOTING OF WOMEN PROTESTERS BY ESCORT TO BRIGADE COMMANDER, ABSOLUTELY FALSE
The attention of Headquarters 23 Brigade Nigerian Army has been drawn to a baseless report by the Sahara Reporters and some other online media published on Monday 8 December, 2025. The said report levelled unfounded and false allegations against the Brigade and its Commander.
Contrary to this allegation, Headquarters 23 Brigade wishes to state that the report is bereft of truth and therefore entirely misleading. It is nothing short of an attempt to smear the image of the Brigade and its Commander and by extension the Nigerian Army.
It is necessary to inform the general public that neither the Brigade Commander nor his escorts was at the scene of the communal clash as the Brigade Commander was participating virtually in the Chief of Army Staff’s weekly operational brief at the time of the purported shooting by his escorts.
Headquarters 23 Brigade wishes to set the record straight that combined troops of 23 Brigade Garrison, Nigerian Police Force, NSCDC and DSS received information about the communal clashes between Bachama and Chobo tribes of Lamurde LGA of Adamawa State at about 0135 hours ( 1:30 AM) of Monday, 8 December 2025.
The communal clash was as a result of the unresolved land disputes and ethnic acrimony between Chobo and Bachama tribes. Troops moved swiftly to the affected communities to return normalcy to the affected areas of Tingno, Rigange, Tito, Waduku and Lamurde.
In the course of its operations, a militia armed group suspected of fighting for one of the warring communities- Chobo attacked the troops .The troops, being a professional, adaptable and combat ready force decisively engaged the militia armed men in the fire fight. During the exchange of fire, troops neutralized 3 of the gunmen and forced other members of the militia group to flee the general area. The troops were able to put the clashes under control.
The troops and other security agencies later exploited the withdrawal route of the militia group, where an additional 5 neutralized members of the armed men were discovered with a motorcycle. Furthermore, the troops received a distress call that a warring community had mobilized to attack Lamurde Local Government's Secretariat.
While moving to secure the Secretariat, some women blocked the road to deny troops passage to the Secretariat while armed men suspected to be fighting for Bachama extraction fired indiscriminately within the community. Troops then created a passage and proceeded to the Local Government Secretariat ( LGS) to secure the area. At this point, no woman was shot or injured. Otherwise, troops would not have been allowed to find any passage through the crowd.
The troops were able to secure the Secretariat from the assailant. While stationed at the Local Government Lodge (LGL), 2 corpses of women were brought to the Lodge by the people of the community and alleged that they were killed by own troops.
Without equivocation, the casualties were caused by the unprofessional handling of automatic weapons by the local militias who are not proficiently trained to handle such automatic weapons.
Notwithstanding, the Brigade deeply sympathizes with the family of the slain women and urges the warring communities to embrace peace to avoid unnecessary loss of lives and destruction of properties.
The Brigade remains resolute and committed to the discharge of its constitutional duties in aid of civil authorities and will continue to apply due diligence as it conducts its operational engagements to ensure peace and stability in its Area of Responsibility.
Headquarters 23 Brigade urges the general public to kindly disregard the malicious report.

I wonder how many people will notice that there is no real difference between what the Nigerian Air Force said and what the Burkinabe authorities said.
The Burkinabes did not say that anybody was arrested, that was added by others. What they said was that a Nigerian plane violated their airspace and they were taking measures to protect the airspace.
The Nigerian Air Force said that the plane was forced to land due to an emergency and based on international aviation rules it landed at the nearest airfield.
The Benue Buffaloes’ players and officials suffered a harrowing ordeal last Friday when they were ambushed on their way back from the Handball Premier League 2025.
According to a statement from the federation, the team was robbed of all their belongings and abducted by armed men. Thankfully, they were later rescued through the swift intervention of Nigerian Army troops.
naptu2: How do the limousines of heads of state travel from one city to the other?
I have written about this many times since 2008, but I think it's time to write about it again.
A president is about to travel. He goes to the airport in a motorcade, steps out of a limousine and into the plane and it takes off.
The presidential plane lands in another city, maybe in another country or it could even be on another continent. He steps out of the plane, greets his hosts, is introduced to dignitaries and then he steps into the same limousine that took him to the airport in his own country. How did the limousine get there so fast? Is it magic? Is it juju? How did they do it?
I'll tell you how.
There are many ways in which this feat is achieved and I'm going to tell you all of them (with pictures attached).
1) CVU
The Conference Visitors Unit (CVU) was set up by a law that was enacted by the administration of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. The main purpose of CVU was to prepare Nigeria to host international conferences and events like the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, OAU Summit and ECOWAS summits. CVU basically provided the logistics for international events that were hosted by Nigeria.
CVU booked hotels for visiting dignitaries. In conjunction with the Foreign Ministry, they sometimes provided interpreters for international events. They also helped to organise local events like constituent assemblies and the provided logistics to support the National Assembly in the immediate aftermath of military rule.
However, what CVU was most well known for was its cars.
The law that was made by Tafawa Balewa's Government stipulated that any vehicle that belonged to the Federal Government, but which was not attached to any ministry, department or agency must be kept with the CVU.
I can probably tell you about every car that was at the headquarters of CVU from the late 1970s till the early 1990s (and even beyond).
There were a lot of green W116 Mercedes Benz S Class cars at CVU in the late 1970s (during the Murtala/Obasanjo/Yar'Adua era). These were replaced with black W126 S Class cars during the Shagari era.
There were very many of those W126 S Class cars at CVU during the 1980s. The Shagari Administration bought mainly Mercedes Benz 500SEL and Mercedes Benz 280SEL models and the Babangida Administration added Mercedes Benz 560SEL models.
There were also a lot of Mercedes Benz W201 (190E) and W124 Mercedes Benz (V Booth) cars there.
There was a Mercedes Benz W123 stretch limousine there as well. It had 3 rows of seats, but it had only 4 doors. There also used to be lots of regular W123 sedans, but these were replaced by the W124s during the Babangida era.
Most of those gigantic Mercedes Benz buses that were imported from Brazil for FESTAC '77 were also kept at CVU. They were used to convey delegates to conferences, but when there were no conferences, they were used as staff buses, to convey CVU staff to and from work. Those buses were very noisy and you could hear them all across the neighbourhood.
There were also smaller and quieter air conditioned Mercedes Benz buses, which I believe were used for an Ecowas or OAU summit. They were also used as staff buses.
There were many silver and black Peugeot 504 and 505 cars at CVU and a lone blue Peugeot 505 Evolution.
There were also utility vehicles like tow trucks and tankers at CVU.
Nigeria hosted the OAU Summit in Abuja in 1991 and many 6-door W124 Mercedes Benz limousines were bought to convey visiting presidents around Abuja. Some of those limousines were brought to Lagos and kept at CVU after the summit.
The Abdulsalam Abubakar Administration bought several W140 stretch limousines and salon cars and he ordered that they should be distributed across the various CVU depots.
That's the point. CVU had its headquarters in Lagos, but it also had depots in Kano and Enugu. The headquarters was moved to Abuja in the 1990s. This meant that CVU could provide identical limousines and luxury cars for a dignitary's use, no matter where the dignitary was in Nigeria.
It could provide vehicles from Lagos for any event in the South-West, it could provide vehicles from Kano for any event in the North, it could provide vehicles from Enugu for any event in the East and it could provide vehicles from Abuja for any event in the Middle Belt.
Therefore, you could see the President arrive Lagos Airport in a particular car and then see him depart Kano Airport in an identical car.
But this doesn't explain everything. President Olusegun Obasanjo felt that the Federal Government was spending too much money and so his government sold a lot of things that the Federal Government owned, in order to save money. Those things included a lot of CVU assets.
A lot of CVU cars were sold by that government. The former CVU Headquarters in Lagos was handed over to the EFCC and the EFCC now uses it to store cars that it has seized from criminals. The CVU depots in Kano and Enugu were also sold and only the CVU Headquarters in Abuja still remains.
So, how come we still see the magic of the President using one car in one city and still using the same car in another city?
2) Transport planes:
In a lot of cases, most of the vehicles in the VIP's motorcade are transported from city to city by transport planes.
Air forces all over the world have transport planes that they use to carry trucks, armoured vehicles and other goods to the war zones. These transport planes can also carry the vehicles in the VIPs motorcade.
American, Russian and Chinese heads of state always fly in their limousines and other motorcade vehicles whenever they are travelling out of their capitals. In fact, the Americans take this practice to a totally crazy level.
The Americans transport their president's helicopters and other associated aircraft by transport planes to wherever he is going.
The pictures below are of the motorcade of the former chief of Air Staff of Nigeria, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. The vehicles are being loaded aboard a Hercules C130 transport plane.
In the next post you can see the US president's limousine being loaded onto a C5 Galaxy transport plane.
The limousines of the British monarch are also loaded onto C17 Globemaster transport planes.
(All these planes begin with the letter C because they were made by American companies and the American Air Force's naming system dictates that the names of transport planes begin with C).
3) Royal yacht:
Lastly, a limousine could be transported by the Royal Yacht.
The Royal Yacht Britannia was ordered during the reign of King George VI. However, he died before it was completed and it was his daughter, Queen Elizabeth II that used it. The Royal Yacht was often sailed to the places that the Queen would visit and she often hosted the head of state that she was visiting to dinner onboard the ship.
I got the chance to get a good view of the yacht in 1990 when it was moored at Marina in Lagos for the visit of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.
There is a garage on the yacht and one of the Queen's Rolls Royce limousines could be put in that garage for her use when she gets to her destination. Of course, as I've previously told you, she usually has 2 identical state cars and so you might see her leave the UK in one car and then see her leave the airport at her destination in an identical car.
The Queen used the Royal Yacht Britannia from 1953 till 1997.
naptu2: The Hercules C130 is in the news, so this gives me an opportunity to tell the C130 story. I often told this story in the 2000s and early 2010s.
I am writing this from memory, so forgive me for any errors.
For many years the Hercules C130 was the main transport plane for the US Air Force. In fact, if I remember correctly, it holds the world record as the plane that has been in service with its original primary owner. It has been used by the US Air Force for over 50 years.
You might remember that when I was writing about the Super Tucano, I told you that the US Air Force has a system for categorising its planes and this involves the use of letters. It goes like this:
So the Hercules C130 is a cargo or transport aircraft.
The reason that the C130 is so popular and has lasted so long is because of its versatility. It can be used to carry military vehicles (the Nigerian Air Force used a C130 to carry the NTA's OB van to Liberia for the inauguration of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in the 2000s), it can carry troops (the C130 was once used to carry journalists to Super Eagles matches back when the presidential jet was used to carry Super Eagles players) and it can also be used to carry supplies like food, fuel and medicine.
In fact, in the 1970s, the US Air Force modified the C130, by putting a howitzer in it and it became a ground attack aircraft known as the AC130. (You might remember that I told you, when I was writing about the Super Tucano, that propeller planes are good for counter insurgency [COIN] operations because they have a longer loiter time).
In Sudan, C130s were used as bombers during the war in the 2000s. Dumb bombs were simply dropped from the ramp of the C130 and the government did not care who the bombs hit.
The C130 also has an advantage over jet planes. Unlike most jet planes, it can take off from a very short runway and it can even take off from grass or dirt runways. This makes it very good for rescuing people in very difficult conditions. A C130 has even landed on an aircraft carrier! (If I remember correctly, this is in the Guinness Book of Records as the biggest and heaviest plane to land on an aircraft carrier).
But now let's come to the subject of this post.
The US Air Force has wanted to replace the C130 for a long time, but it has not been able to. Why? Because of "constituency project".
You see jet planes have been made that can almost do what the C130 does. I have told you many times about the C17 Globemaster and the C5 Galaxy. These are cargo planes that are jet planes. And if you want the C130s ability to land and take off in difficult places, you've got the V-22 Osprey, which is a tiltrotor aircraft (helicopter-plane).
But you see, the C130 is made in factories in certain places in the United States and it provides jobs for residents of those places and taxes for the local and state governments in those places. The senators and members of the House of Representatives from those places do not want the C130 programme to end. The money for aircraft and other military equipment comes from Congress and those senators and representatives always take action in Congress to ensure that the C130 programme keeps going on.
In fact, they are talking about making a "Super C130"!

SAFE PRECAUTIONARY LANDING OF NAF C-130 AIRCRAFT IN BURKINA FASO
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) wishes to clarify reports regarding the diversion of a NAF C-130 aircraft during its ferry mission to Portugal on 8 December 2025. Following takeoff from Lagos, the crew observed a technical concern which necessitated a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, the nearest airfield, in accordance with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols. NAF crew is safe and have received cordial treatment from the host authorities.
Plans are ongoing to resume the mission as scheduled. The Nigerian Air Force appreciates the support received during this period and assures the public that NAF remains professionally committed to strict compliance with operational procedures and safety standards, ensuring the protection of its personnel while fulfilling its constitutional mandate.

Pilgrims pay the Federal Government, through the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) for their pilgrimage.
The government's role (through the National Hajj Commission and the National Christian Pilgrimage Commission) is to receive money from pilgrims and help them organise the pilgrimage. The government helps the pilgrims to negotiate with airlines and get a good deal (discounts, etc), but the airfare is paid by the pilgrims. The government provides consular services to ensure that the registered pilgrims can enter the Holy Lands and that they are safe there, etc. but the cost of the pilgrimage is borne by the pilgrims.
The National Hajj Commission has set a deadline of December 5th for pilgrims to pay for the pilgrimage, but the Kebbi State Government says that some of its citizens will not be able to pay by that date and so it is giving them a loan, that is, it will pay on their behalf and then they can repay the state government later.
This has sparked a debate among northerners on social media.
Bashir El-Rufai BashirElRufai
The Kebbi State Government just approved 10,000,000,000 (10BN) solely for the sponsorship & assistance for Hajj Pilgrimage activities.
Again, and we wonder why these guys think we are a very stu pid set of citizens in the North.
The intending pilgrims will do better to perform one of the Hajj rituals - STONING THE DEVIL, by Stoning the person deceiving them with the Hajj loan who qualifies as the " BIGGER DEVIL"
They just deploy religious sentiment to hoodwink se nile people, the same people who can't afford to eat are given loans to go for pilgrimage. This is simply da ftly.
This is in a state where ravaging poverty is @75%, with over 2 million out of school children, dilapidated Hospitals and schools, poor township and feeder roads, lacking clean drinking water, unpaid gratuities, youth unemployment, children learning on the floor, no drugs, collapsed primary health centers etc etc.
Same country people collect loans to gamble and build failed businesses. NAHCON has closed collections of fees, so many intending pilgrims have made deposits and would lose d chance of going to hajj, Gov. wades and gives a loan which will b paid back by pilgrims. What’s d issue?
Hajj is not a necessity. Almighty Allah put a fundamental clause to it as well. IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT AND IN GOOD HEALTH. You are making a mockery of Islam this way. Millions of children will go hungry in the same state with nowhere to sleep, and we think this is the way?
The issue is how is Hajj a better priority to children's education who without it can end up being bandits tomorrow. How important is Hajj compare to jobs those funds can create to liberate idle youth from being used by the devils workshop. Haba Hon. Where is this coming from?.
