Nigeria: Lagos State Governor Justifies Meeting of Southern Governors

Lagos, Nigeria — Host Lagos Governor Bola Tinubu has justified Tuesday's maiden meeting of governors of the 17 states in southern Nigeria, saying such a gathering was necessary to strengthen the country's fledgling democracy.
In an apparent reference to criticism of such gathering as sectional and divisive, he said it should actually be encouraged and supported.
naptu2: The first meeting of the southern governors in the 4th Republic was held in Lagos in October 2000. The Southern Governors Summit was used to coordinate the fight for resource control and more importantly, the fight against the onshore/offshore dichotomy. It was also used to demand for devolution of powers (state police, etc.).
Offshore/Onshore Dichotomy.
The 1999 constitution stated that a percentage of mineral revenue that was derived from a state should be given to that state. It also stated that the National Assembly should meet to determine what the percentage would be, but it must not be less than 13%.
The Federal Government led by President Olusegun Obasanjo paid the states 13% of the revenue derived from minerals in their states. This was because the National Assembly did not set any percentage, so the Federal Government simply used the percentage that was mentioned in the constitution.
However, there was a problem.
The Federal Government stated that any mineral (that is, crude oil) that was found in the ocean, off the continental shelf of a state, belonged to the Federal Government and it would not pay any derivation funds to any state for it.
The states argued that they must have a share of the revenue from such minerals, regardless of the fact that they are in the ocean.
The battle was waged in the National Assembly and in the courts. State governments sued the Federal Government. The state governors were meeting to coordinate their strategy, but then there was a division. A few northern state governments took the side of the Federal Government and so the Southern governors then decided to coordinate their strategy through the Southern Governors Forum.
Politics crept in ahead of the 2007 elections and the Southern Governors Forum did not meet between 2005 and 2017. Their wives continued to hold meetings, but the Southern Governors Forum did not meet.
Until recently, the host governor usually acted as chairman and spokesman of the forum.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested twelve (12) suspects in connection with circulating handbills and posters information on social media attributed to “OJE PARAPO OF OREGUN”.
The publication from this group was warning and restricting the general public from freedom of movement, expression, and dignity to human persons.
(2)The Command will not tolerate lawlessness in any part of the State, and the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has therefore directed the suspension of this festival, which is likely to lead to disturbance of public peace, safety, and public order in the State.
(3) This restriction suffices to make it clear that no group should take laws into their hands and prevent other Nigerians from movement around and throughout the State at will at any time. The Lagos State Police Command will continue to firmly protect the fundamental human rights of everyone in the State.
The Command further warns anyone planning unauthorized gatherings or activities that are capable of threatening public peace and safety to desist forthwith from such plans.
(4) With regard to the publication of the Oregun traditional Egungun festival, scheduled as seen in the handbills and posters for 27th and 28th November 2025. The Lagos State Police Command has assessed the level of fear and apprehension already generated among residents because of the publication of restrictions against the fundamental freedoms and rights of the people of the State and has hereby declared that the event must not hold. This is done to ensure public
No festival that can risk destabilising the peace or heightening tension in the State will be permitted under any circumstances.
(5) In similar circumstances at Mafoluku, Oshodi, within the Makinde Police Division, the Command acted promptly on 23rd November 2025 after similar publications were circulated to instigate disturbance of public order, safety, and other acts capable of disrupting public peace and protection of life and property.
Twelve (12) suspects were arrested and are currently under investigation. They will be prosecuted on completion of the investigation.
(6) The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State CP Olohundare Jimoh, categorically wishes to reaffirm that the Oje PARAPO of Oregun should desist forthwith from holding the Egungun Festival as the security for the festival can no longer be guaranteed.
Furthermore, the stress and fear already instilled in residents are unacceptable. He warns that the full weight of the law will be applied to anyone or group that attempts to undermine the peace, safety, or stability of Lagos State.
(7) The general public throughout the State is therefore advised to go about their lawful duties, obligations, and other responsibilities without any fear or apprehension. 1) A few days ago the DPO of Ogborikoko Division (a policewoman) went on an outreach to schools in the area.
During the outreach a student revealed that her father (that is, the student's father) was sleeping with her and her sisters. The father was later arrested and he confessed on video.
2) A man in the same community saw the video of the confession and went to report to the police that his baby mama was performing sexual acts on their 3-year old child.
3) Police arrested the baby mama, searched her and her belongings and found a video of the act.
4) The child was medically examined and it was discovered that she was no longer a virgin and she had a sexually transmitted infection.
5) Bright Edafe interrogated the baby mama in the video above and she confessed. She narrated what was in the video and confessed that she abused her daughter.
6) Bright asked her if she was a lesbian and she said yes.

The other time in Ogorikoko, we paraded a man who was having sexual intercourse with three of his daughters who were mostly underage.
Now in. . . it's unfortunate because about few weeks. . . a few days later, we got another disturbing report where the father of a 3-year-old child, who had the baby with a lady he is not yet married to, came to the station and reported that he came across a video where the mother of his daughter was having sexual intimacy with the 3-year-old daughter that is a mother practicing lesbianism with her own daughter.
We are bringing this to you so that we understand the societal vices and how to come together collectively to tackle it.

On the strength of that information, the DPO Ogorikoko, CSP Tami Agbede Isokumo swiftly mobilized men and arrested the mother and investigation has unraveled that indeed the allegations are true because there is a video evidence. Not only did she sexually molest her own child, she took it, she had it on record.

NIGERIAN MILITARY NOT RECRUITING BOKO HARAM EX FIGHTERS
The Defence Headquarters has been notified of false information peddled in some online media, insinuating that deradicalized Boko Haram ex- fighters are being absorbed into the Nigerian military.
One of such insinuations is contained in a trending video footage published by Roots TV, where one Balhatu Musa Ezekiel claimed the Nigeria Army had recruited de-redicalized Boko Haram Ex-fighters into the Army and was therefore recycling insurgency.
The Defence Headquarters wishes to unambiguously state that Balhatu's claims are not only bereft of truth, but laced with mediocrity emanating from poorly researched and uninformed position. Contrary to his claims, no Boko Haram ex- fighter has been recruited into the Nigerian military and no such plan is in the offing. The de-radicalization, rehabilitation and reintegration program is a Federal Government program conducted under the auspices of Operation Safe Corridor as a non- kinetic operation.
Nigeria's De-radicalization model is a very effective one, targeted at low risk combatants and has become a classical example in the Lake Chad Basin Region and West Africa. Over 250 repentant insurgents who willingly abandoned their struggle and surrendered to federal troops have been de-radicalized, rehabilitated and re-integrated into the society by their respective state governments in conjunction with traditional and religious institutions. Nigeria's De-radicalization model is therefore not new in the global community, as such model exists in Algeria, Colombia, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, where persons involved in violent extremism have been de-radicalized and rehabilitated. This process is therefore an internationally acceptable practice now.
So far in Nigeria, the de-radicalized ex-fighters are doing well in their respective communities, as no adverse report has been recorded against the de-radicalized repentant ex fighters by Operation Safe Corridor's monitoring unit.
There has not been report of molestation or harassment of any sort against them by members of the communities, where they are resettled. As a matter of verifiable fact, the reintegrated ex- fighters are doing well in their various endeavours and are positively impacting on their respective communities. It is also expedient to state, that the Federal Government of Nigeria has continued to prosecute BHT/ISWAP suspects in courts of competent jurisdiction and over 500 terrorists have so far been convicted.
Meanwhile, the next round of prosecution of another batch of terrorism suspects is due to commence shortly. Members of the public are therefore enjoined to please discountenance the misinformation and misguided views peddled by Balhatu Musa Ezekiel, as it constitutes outright aberration of extant recruitment procedures and practice of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. The Defence Headquarters reiterates its commitment to ensuring a well motivated, trained and equipped Armed Forces that is professionally responsive to national security commitments.
