naptu2: I chose not to participate in this thread because I know that people that don't know anything will politicise it. But there's a reason for the thread.
Firstly, there's an important word in that headline and it is the word approved. This action was not initiated by Bola Tinubu, but it was approved by him.
I am certain that it was initiated by Shehu Dikko. Shehu Dikko is very experienced in sports administration, he brought improvements to our league when he was the CEO of the League Management Company, therefore he knows what I am about to tell you.
There are certain payments that the players should receive. Some of these payments should be made daily, others should be made after every match, etc.
However, the NFF usually makes these payments at the end of the tournament. This has often led to problems. There are times that the NFF only delivers promises rather than cash. They don't pay the players at all. There are times that they make half payments.
This has often led to serious problems at the end of tournaments. On one occasion the players refused to leave their hotel after winning WAFCON in South Africa. They hadn't been paid and they had a sit-in protest. President Obasanjo had to personally intervene to ensure that they were paid. They missed their flight due to the protest and he had to send the presidential jet to pick them up.
In 2016 the players went on a street protest to the National Assembly and the Aso Rock Villa because they hadn't been paid after WAFCON. The Chief of Staff to the President had to intervene before they were paid. The NFF victimised the coach and captain because of the protest.
In 2019 the players staged another sit-in at their hotel in France after the World Cup. They had been owed for a long time and the NFF wanted to pay only the players that were at the World Cup, but the players insisted that their colleagues that did not make the World Cup team, but were being owed, should also be paid. Once again the NFF victimised the captain, Desire Oparanozie and she was excluded from the team. The coach, Thomas Dernnerby, quit because the NFF ordered him not to select her.
So this announcement is designed to ensure that there is no repeat of that experience. The Government has paid the NFF and ordered it to pay all the players before the final game. It has made its action public so that the players, fans and other stakeholders will know and nobody can play games with the money.
However, there are rumours that the players are being owed some allowances from 2022 and there's no word about whether they have been paid. |

Nigeria are the second most successful team at Afrobasket (behind Senegal). D'Tigress have won the competition in 2003, 2005, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023. Senegal has won the competition 11 times (mainly in the 1970s, '80s and '90s), while Nigeria has won the competition 6 times.
Nigeria has won the last 4 editions of the tournament.
The 2025 edition holds from July 25th to August 3rd in Abidjan. |

QueenJazz: I had an interesting thought this morning.
What if our Super Falcons trained occasionally with the men (Super Eagles) so that they can push their physicality, stamina, mental resilience and endurance even further than it is now? How feasible is this approach?
I want to hear the pundits' thoughts on this? I understand what you mean and it already happens informally. It's been happening for a very long time. Asisat Oshoala usually trains (and plays football) with men any time she's in Lagos, Onome Ebi and Evelyn Akhator (Nigerian female national team basketballer) trained with Sikiru Alimi and Abu Azeez (Nigerian league male players) during Covid 19 and Michelle Alozie and Esther Okoronkwo played with men when they were in Lagos in December. I'll post videos later. |

I wonder how many goals Ifeanyi and Cynthia scored. I remember that there was a particular Nations Cup that Ifeanyi was basically our saviour. |

naijaseeker: But Desire joined the team in 2011 remember, straight out of the 2010 Falconets. So she would have scored in the 2012 edition no? She didn't score in 2012, but she scored 3 goals in 2010. Desire was the highest goal scorer in 2014, but Oshoala (who was in second place) had only one goal less than her. Desire was injured in the middle of the 2016 tournament and Oshoala scored 6 goals, while she scored 3. Oshoala scored 3 goals in 2018 while Desire scored 2. None of them scored in 2022 (Oshoala was injured at the beginning of the tournament) and Oshoala has a goal in 2025. |

naijaseeker: Suprised Oshoala has scored more than Desire. But how about Stella Mbachu? Who was the 9 during Perpetua's time, after Akide? Desire was the highest goal scorer in 2014 and Oshoala was second. Oshoala was the highest goal scorer in 2016, but Desire was injured for much of the tournament. Oshoala scored a hat-trick in 2018 and Desire scored 2 goals. I'd like to know the number of goals that Ifeanyi and Cynthia scored. |

Danielnino00: Alozie's goal... But to be honest,if not for the attempt by Deborah and Ihuezo, Dlamini likely would have saved it... Ihezuo and Deborah kind of obstructed her positioning for the ball.... It kind of reminded me of John Utaka's goal against Cameroon at the 2004 Nations Cup. Utaka and Osaze made runs when Kanu got the ball and the Cameroonians were confused about which run to track. The South African goalkeeper was confused about whether she should track the flight of the ball (powered by Alozie's shot) or whether Ihezuo or Deborah would redirect it. |
