That was part of the intrigues ahead of the 2007 elections.

The late Awujale spoke about it (he tonguelashed Obasanjo).

WAFU B: Flying Eagles brace for tough Elephants final test

23rd July 2025

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are gearing up for a fierce showdown against rampant Ivory Coast as both sides square off in the final of the WAFU B U20 Boys Cup today (Wednesday) at the Centre of Excellence in Prampram, Ghana, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

With the Ivorians enjoying a perfect run to the final, winning all four of their previous matches, the task before coach Aliyu Zubair’s men is clear; stop the Young Elephants or risk falling at the last hurdle.

Ivory Coast opened their campaign with a 2–1 victory over Burkina Faso, before seeing off Niger Republic and Togo with narrow wins of 1–0 and 2–0 respectively.

In Sunday’s semi-final, they showed grit to come from behind and knock out host nation Ghana 2–1.

For the Flying Eagles, the road to the final has not been without its own drama.

Mohammed Abdullahi rescued a point late on in their opener against Ghana, scoring in the 84th minute to force a 1–1 draw. Nigeria then stormed back from a goal down to dispatch Benin Republic 4–1, finishing top of their three-team Group A.

Their semi-final clash against Niger Republic ended goalless after 90 minutes, but Zubair’s boys held their nerve in a tense shootout, edging it 4–3 to book a place in Wednesday’s title decider.

The final will see WAFU B President, Ibrahim Gusau, in attendance alongside other dignitaries, as the region crowns its new youth champions.

For Zubair, it’s another opportunity to enhance his growing reputation.

The former Gombe United manager guided Nigeria to WAFU B glory in Togo last year, and followed up with qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup from the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

While Nigeria will look to the attacking duo of Mohammed Abdullahi and Ezekiel Kpangu for inspiration, the Ivorians boast firepower of their own in Abdoul Bamba and Ali Kone, both instrumental in their unbeaten run.

🤣 Kettykin, so why should anybody take you serious since you've now confirmed that your story that Lagos is dying, it'll be like Warri and that people are running away is not true?

How do people believe that your new claim of a civil war is not another lie?

🤣

If Nigeria is not restructured , Lagos and the struggle for the control of Lagos will birth a civil war
But weren't you the person that was preaching that Lagos is dying, that it would be like Warri and that nobody wants to stay in Lagos? How would the struggle for control of such a place birth a civil war?

Hope Uzodimma @Hope_Uzodimma1

In strengthening the unity in our diversity, our constitution must reflect our shared values and aspirations, not create loopholes for division. I made this clear while speaking at the South East, Center B, Public Hearing (Imo & Abia States) of the Review of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, held at the Eze Imo Palace Auditorium, Owerri.

Top on my address was the call for the creation of two additional States in the South East. This, I believe, is a matter of equity and a necessary step towards accelerating development in the region. I emphasized the strategic consideration of at least one new State falling within the oil-producing axis, to facilitate access to developmental resources and infrastructure.

I also advocated for a reinstatement of a vital democratic tradition, one practiced in our early Republics, whereby any Nigerian born in a State or who has lived there for over ten years, with good conduct, should be granted indigene status and its attendant benefits.

For lasting political balance, I proposed that the six geopolitical zones be constitutionally recognized in the zoning of the Presidency, replacing the current North - South arrangement. This will foster national inclusion and ease political tensions during presidential elections.

Finally, I emphasized the urgent need for State Policing to address localized security threats and better safeguard citizens. In my appeal to the National Assembly, I highlighted our commitment to the federation and our collective progress in unity.

EducationRe: The Difference Between Tai Solarin College Of Education And TASUED by naptu2(op): 8:21am On Jul 22, 2025
The controversy arose because people did not actually listen to what the governor said. What did he say?

The governor thanked President Tinubu for agreeing to take over TASUED (that is, the Federal Government took over the university from the Ogun State Government). He then thanked God that they were able to show appreciation to the Awujale while he was alive by renaming the Tai Solarin College of Education after him (that was done in 2021).

Thanks for the update. I personally used to think that it was the college of education that was upgraded to the university
The college of education was upgraded into a university.

However, the Ogun State Government wanted it to be both a university and a college of education. The National Commission for Colleges of Education refused because it didn't want the college of education to be subordinate to a university.

So it was split in two in 2008.

This created confusion because there was a university and a college of education with the same name.

In 2021 the Ogun State Government changed the name of the college of education to Sikiru Adetona College of Education. As I said, it was changed when the Awujale was alive.

tete7000:
The grievance people have is "why erase someone's name to put another person's name?" Why not maintain status quo and get another institution to rename?
By the way I am personally not bothered about what bears whose name, I don't know what that does to someone who is already dead, rottening in the grave.

I just read the story from the source and this is journalistic incompetence. I am not a journalist and I know the vast majority of Facebook pages posturing as official pages of these players are fake. I've had to warn many of us here that stories from Facebook particularly without a credible source are most likely fake.

How does a reputable media platform like This day quote a "Facebook post" without even cross-checking her other social media platform to start or reaching out directly to the player?

Just yesterday, I posted what I felt appeared to be an apparent retirement post by Onome Ebi, and like naptu pointed out, I had earlier seen her Twitter post (which I know to be personally controlled by her) but didn't think it was good enough to make conclusions. It wasn't until I saw her Instagram post which was more exhaustive that I decided to post about it and even then, I wasn't definitive with my conclusions since se didn't expressly use the word. How a journalist could be so incompetent is concerning.
There was also a similar issue with Ashleigh Plumptre just before the tournament began. She had to issue a disclaimer and point out that those Facebook and Instagram pages do not belong to her.

People don't read.

One person is asking if those that named Tai Solarin College of Education did not know that there was already an institution with that name.

Which came first, the university or the college?

Anyway, the controversy is exactly the reason that I didn't complain. Having 2 institutions with very similar names would confuse people, so I understand why the college was renamed.

Asisat has been thinking of retiring before this tournament.

She made an Instagram story sometime ago when something happened. She said that the stress was making her consider whether she should do what was on her mind immediately. She indicated that she was thinking of retiring and she was wondering whether she should just do it immediately.

In fact, at that time I got the impression that she was thinking of retiring from football completely, not just the national team.

Abiodun Renames Tai Solarin University Of Education In Honour Of Awujale

EducationThe Difference Between Tai Solarin College Of Education And TASUED by naptu2(op):
I wrote this yesterday.

The current outrage.

I was about to complain, then I remembered that there were two. Many people are complaining right now, but I'm willing to bet that they don't know that there are two.

Two what?

The Ogun State College of Education was established in 1978. Its name was changed to Tai Solarin College of Education (TASCE) in 1994 after the death of the great educationist.

Governor Dapo Abiodun renamed it again and it is now known as the Sikiru Adetona College of Science and Technology, in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebu.

That's why some people are up in arms. Dr Tai Solarin was an atheist and his religion was education. His dream was for every Nigerian child to be able to get top quality education. Critics say that Dr Solarin's name is being erased and that he did more for education in Nigeria than Oba Adetona.

But wait a minute, I said that I was about to complain, but I didn't anymore. Why?

That's because the Ogun State Government established the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in 2005. It is a separate institution and it still bears that name. The university was taken over by the Federal Government early this year.

Basically there were 2 higher educational institutions in Ogun State that were named after Tai Solarin and one of them has been named after Oba Sikiru Adetona.

Are they the same?

1) This is Tai Solarin University of Education.

https://tasued.edu.ng/

2) This is the former Tai Solarin College of Education, now known as Sikiru Adetona College of Education.

https://tasce.edu.ng/site/about/

Note: As the governor said, the college was renamed while the Awujale was still alive.

Garba Shehu @GarShehu

After a state burial like no other, the renaming of the University of Maiduguri after the late President Muhammadu Buhari is an honour well deserved.

Heartening to see this happening in our lifetime in Nigeria. My personal view.
