People are posting all kinds of things on Nairaland and calling for military rule.

Isn't that funny?

Do they think that they would have been able to post the things that they are currently posting if we were under military rule? Do they know what would have happened to them?

Anyway, to many Nigerians the grass is always greener on the other side. Everything is always better than what they are going through. Military rule will always be better than democracy when they are in a democracy and democracy will be better than military rule when they are under military rule.

They can't see farther than today.

Akinremi twins.

Omolade (Kehinde) and Omotayo (Taiwo) Akinremi represented Nigeria in the 400m hurdles in the 1990s. One of them later joined the the US Air Force and competed for them at the World Military Games in the 2000s.

Where did those videos come from?

The issue of succession is one of the biggest problems of dictatorships. When will the tenure end? Who will take over afterwards? These questions are never fully answered and this always leads to a power struggle.

Felix Houphouet Boigny was president of the Ivory Coast from independence in 1960 till his death in 1993. I listened to him on the BBC when he ssid that he wasn't going to hand over to anyone because he was a chief in his village and by their tradition, a chief does not see his successor.

There was a power struggle between Allasane Ouattara and Henry Konan Bedie after Boigny died. Bedie won and was president till 1999 when there was a coup.

Basically, Ivory Coast suffered serious instability in the 2000s. There were 2 civil wars, presidents that lost elections but refused to accept the results, military rule, etc. Most of the videos that are being circulated are from that time.

In fact, some people are circulating the video of the arrest of Laurent Gbagbo and claiming that it was President Ouattara that was arrested.

There was no coup in the Ivory Coast, it's just a rumour that was manufactured by some people.

Biafran groups also spread the rumours.

That was my statememt.

Is this statement correct? Yes, it is a fact.

Anybody can use Google, Twitter, Facebook and other search engines and see that it is a fact.

Guyman02 and ChybuzzDD are wasting their time, I report facts and everybody can see that it's a fact.

All their stories are simply a waste of time. Nothing that they do will change facts.

ChybuzzDD:
You're still getting it wrong.

Their roles in announcing the news, as many bloggers do, are still different from those of the Pro-Russian groups which are both propagating and encouraging, if not sponsoring, the coup

One of the Biafran group was even calling on the West to sit up. How's that a problem to you?

Why didn't you pick on the Russian groups?

And for your brothers from the sw who have marshalled out as usual to spew their ha te, i didn't see any of the Biafrann group call for coup in Nigeria
You wrote falsehood and instead of admitting it you posted the crap above.

I created this thread and I wrote about the Russian groups that you mentioned.

I wrote that many Biafran groups also spread the rumour and what I wrote is true.

Everything I wrote is true and nothing that you wrote is true.

I deal with facts, not sentiments.

I won't read your post again because you deal in sentiments not facts.

ChybuzzDD made a very funny post.

I find it very funny and highly entertaining when people try to deny something that is easily verifiable. I included links in my last post, but the bot hid them.

I have now added screenshots in the original post. There are very many more, but Nairaland only allows me to post 4 screenshots.

Some rumour mongers claim that the president has been captured while others claim that he fled. There have also been claims that the chief of defence staff is dead.

All these claims are not true.

The people that are backing this campaign have been calling for coups in Nigeria, Ghana, the Ivory Coast and other West African countries. They have also been promoting the military dictatorships in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

The rumours are also being spread by some pro-Biafra groups.

Côte d’Ivoire’s Ouattara attends council of ministers meeting despite coup rumours

by Claire Mom
May 21, 2025 11:31 pm

President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire on Wednesday presided over a council of ministers meeting at the presidential palace in Abidjan, the Ivorian capital.

The Ivorian presidency confirmed Ouattara’s attendance in a statement issued, including pictures showing the president and cabinet members at the meeting.

Diversification of electricity sources and adequate housing for citizens were among the topics addressed at the meeting.

The high-level meeting took place amid growing coup reports on social media in Ivory Coast.

An X-user claimed that Ouattara may have been killed after military forces allegedly took over on Tuesday.

“Internet access in the country has been disrupted,” the user wrote.

The allegations were spread across multiple accounts via various social media platforms, including X, Facebook, TikTok, and mainstream media platforms.

On Facebook alone, some 9.7k users discussed the alleged coup, the platform’s metric showed as of Wednesday.

Lassina Doumbia, chief of army staff, was also rumoured to have been killed.

TheCable spoke to journalists in the French-speaking West African country to confirm the development. They debunked the reports.

“There is no coup in Côte d’Ivoire. The country is stable,” Christelle Kouamé, an Ivorian journalist living in Abidjan, said.

Kouamé is also a member of the executive council of the National Union of Journalists of Côte d’Ivoire and a member of the organisation of Investigative Journalists in Côte d’Ivoire.

“The president was also recently at the opening of the Africa CEO Forum. It was last week. There was even a council of ministers today. And President Ouattara was there,” she added.

“It is fake news. People do what they want with the internet. But it is thanks to the internet that I speak to you,” she said, debunking rumours of disrupted internet access.

Coup rumours have become increasingly common in West Africa, reflecting a region grappling with political instability, weakened democratic institutions, and growing public distrust in civilian governments.

In recent years, several countries—including Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Guinea—have experienced successful military takeovers, fuelling speculation and anxiety in neighbouring states about who might be next.

Ivory Coast’s coup rumours came as the country prepares to host the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) annual meetings next week.

A new president is expected to be elected, succeeding Akinwumi Adesina, who has served two terms.

Foreign AffairsThere Is No Coup In The Ivory Coast by naptu2(op):
In recent weeks there has been a campaign to promote military coups across West Africa. Some analysts believe that this social media campaign is being sponsored by Russia. The Russians have denied that they have anything to do with it.

Rumours of a coup in the Ivory Coast have been spread on social media in the past 2 days. Despite the fact that people living in Abidjan have said that there is no coup, the rumour mongers have posted videos of street battles in other places and claimed that they are videos of Abidjan. They also claim that President Alassane Outtara has fled, despite the fact that the president actually attended a cabinet meeting yesterday.

The rumours began in Ghana and spread to Nigeria.

Look at all these people that have no idea about Nigeria's security architecture!

Of course the DSS had nothing to do with it and you should know who was behind it!

Don't you know what happened in 1986?

What is the name of the domestic intelligence agency?

What is the name of the external intelligence agency?

What is the name of the defence counterpart?

Bashir Ahmad, OON @BashirAhmaad

Sahara Reporters are truly wicked, dangerous and irresponsible. They are fully aware that in this country, there is absolutely no consequence for deliberately misleading the public. In a shocking display of dishonesty, they went to Instagram, picked a random picture of an American citizen named Aaliyah, they changed her name to “Zainab Muhammad,” and concocted a completely false story claiming she was going to be charged in a court in Zamfara for renouncing Islam.

As usual, without any verification, the fake story spread like wildfire. Useless media blogs joined in, gleefully sharing it and it quickly turned into an excuse to insult Islam, Muslims and Arewa. Until when @AM_Saleeeem, @ishakaa and others called them out, and then the real lady, Aaliyah, also came forward to set the record straight, stating that she had never even been to Nigeria.

And what did Sahara Reporters do next? They quietly deleted the post. No clarification. No correction. No retraction. No apology. No accountability for the public deception they orchestrated. Nothing.

This is not journalism. This is calculated mischief, which is very dangerous and divisive.
