Yampotatocarrot:
With the amount of wastes generated at Ile-epo market alone, I believe Lagos can achieve it if they really want to, I never add Oko-filling mountain of waste to it

I remember my roommate when I was in first year at UNN, his project was on generating cooking gas from sugarcane waste ... They successfully carried it out... I wonder why Lagos had not thought of such for a while

Take Ile-epo for example, the electricity generated from the waste can be supplied to the immediate vicinity at a cost, generating revenue for government, income for the private company that'll be in charge, jobs for people and less land and air pollution in the area

I love the fact the LASG is looking into it... Let's not over rely on only one source for electricity (just this morning, I was watching YouTube videos on some local governments in Ogun State whose lights are being supplied by something called a solar minigrid)
You hit the nail on the head. What's important to me is that we shouldn't rely only on one source of energy.

Instead of having a situation in which the gases pollute the environment or contribute to global warming, instead of a situation in which they cause fires and instead of a situation in which they produce unpleasant smells and make nearby residents uncomfortable,

The government plans to harness the gas an use it to power public transport and generate electricity for Lagosians.

LAMATA

Waste to Wealth: Lagos embarks on Study tour to Sweden

In a bid to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve sustainability in the transport sector, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (LAMATA) is exploring Biogas as a potential fuel source.

A delegation led by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources Dr. Omobolaji Gaji, Managing Director of LAMATA, Engr. Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, and the Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Mr. Olumuyiwa Gbodegesin, recently embarked on a four-day study tour to Linköping, Sweden from the 22nd-26th of April, 2024.

The goal of the visit was to gain firsthand knowledge about Sweden's biogas infrastructure and technology.

Biogas is a renewable fuel produced from the decomposition of organic waste and Lagos generates about 15,000 tons of waste daily, half of which is organic material.

LAMATA is looking at ways to convert this waste into a clean and sustainable fuel source.

The delegation visited the Biogas Solutions Research Centre (BSRC) at Linköping University, a facility that coordinates research on biogas production and distribution in Sweden. They also visited a biogas station and the depot for Linköping's public transport system, where buses are powered by a combination of biogas, biodiesel and electricity.

LAMATA's exploration of biogas aligns with Lagos state’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

By adopting biogas as a fuel for transportation and environmental cleaning vehicles, LAMATA & LAWMA hopes to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Lagos.

Other members of the delegation include, SSA to the Governor on Environment, Miss. Tari Taylaur, Technical Adviser Corporate and investment planning LAMATA, Engr. Osa Konyeha, Head of Bus Service, Dr. Kemi Amure, MD, Teejay Motors, Mr Alhaji Adekunle, MD TSL consult, Dr James Spencer, CEO Transport Service limited, Mr Ayodeji wright and head of Scania West Africa, Mr Francois Lechat.

Olusosun dump undergoes capping to stop smoke, fire

May 8, 2018

The 47-hectres Olusosun dump in Lagos is undergoing capping to stop emission of poisonous smoke and fire outbreak at the facility, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

NAN correspondent who visited the dump yesterday reports that work is in full gear as earthmoving equipment are seen overlaying with sand while loaders are pouring laterite on the surface.

Speaking on the project, Dr Iyabo Phillips, Director of Environmental Services, Lagos State Ministry of Environment, said the capping would last for a month.

Phillips said the site was been covered with 250 truckloads of laterite every day to ensure that the resurfacing area was completed within a month.

She said drainage had been constructed around the dump for easy access to the dumpsite to prevent erosion.

“We are aware of the impact of the fume on people around, so we had to pull down the fence down in order to control the fume coming out. To ensure that lives and properties are protected, all the inhabitants of the area, especially asthmatic patients, have been asked to vacate to enable us quench the fume. The volume of the fume has been reduced,” Phillips said.

Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) General Manager Mr Segun Adeniji, said the capping was undertaken by the state government to drastically reduce fire and smoke from the landfill site.

Adeniji said government was aware of health hazard of smoke on the people and was making serious effort to stop it immediately.

“We are assuring the people living in this area that within a couple of weeks, this will be a thing of the past. The entire plan is total remediation of the place so the state government can turn it to a recreation park for people to relax,” he said.

LAWMA Assistant General Manager, Operations Essien Nseabia, said there were two types of landfill fire – the surface fire and the deep-seated fire.

Nseabia said when the surface fire continued for a period of time, it would extend underground.

“When methane gas mixes with oxygen, it becomes volatile and burns seriously.

“So in attempts to quench the fire, the first thing you do is try to exclude the oxygen from the burning fume, so as to reduce the flammability power of the methane gas.

“When the wind blows on the dumpsite, there is intrusion and that intrusion takes oxygen into the vent of the waste. So the more oxygen enters the waste, the more the burning capacity of the fire.

“So the first thing to do is what is called capping. Capping is taking laterite to block that vent, by covering the dump.

“Laterite is reddish in colour and that red colour is as a result of iron (II), then that iron in the laterite absorbs oxygen from underneath of the deep-seated fire and get oxidized to iron (II) oxide. So when the laterite forms that, it blocks the oxygen and the fire stops. Every day we have estimated 250 trips of laterite, at times we go beyond that, we can go below that depending on the atmosphere,” he said.

Fire guts Olusosun dump, burns Lagos buses

By Taiwo Ojoye
15th March 2018

A wildfire broke out on Wednesday at the Olusosun dump, in the Ojota area of Lagos State, consuming some vehicles, as residents panicked over possible health hazards of the smoke.

While the cause of the fire had yet to be definitely ascertained, The PUNCH learnt that officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and Parks and Gardens, were battling to put out the fire which stopped vehicular movement.

Our correspondent gathered that many residents, motorists and commuters in the area were held in traffic as thick smoke billowed into the sky from the landfill.

The gridlock was said to have affected the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Tollgate, Seven-Up and the state secretariat areas.

The Director of the state fire service, Rasak Fadipe, said the agency was alerted to the fire around 4pm, adding that it immediately deployed four water trucks in the scene.

Fadipe, who said the firefighters were having a tough time fighting the flames due to the high wind velocity, said the damage caused by the fire could only be determined after it had been put out.

He said, “We have LASEMA and Parks and Gardens’ officials complementing our effort. We have also asked Julius Berger to bring in their water trucks because we need constant supply of water.

“The affected place is the Olusosun dump. The fire covered the entire area and it is threatening the LAGbus compound, where a lot of vehicles are parked. The LAGbus yard shares a fence with the dump. Some of the buses lined up around the fence have already been affected. But we have also tried to curtail the fire from getting to the petrol dispensing pump.

“The fire is still raging (9pm) and there is a high wind velocity which is aiding the spread. The fire is erupting from the back of the fence, which is not yet accessible. We don’t know the cause of the fire, but sometimes there can be chemical reactions from the dump which may have caused it.”

Our correspondent learnt that some trucks and stores around the area were also burnt by the fire.

The Cleaner Lagos Initiative, in a statement on the incident, urged residents not to panic, adding that the fire was being handled.

“It is necessary to clarify that the fire at Olusosun dump wasn’t deliberately set by the Lagos State Government or any individual. It broke out as a result of the pockets of unstable gases caused by indiscriminate dumping and further compounded by dry weather,” it said.

Climate Change: Olusosun dumpsite has natural capacity to instigate fire, stakeholders warn

By Gabriel Olawale
November 22, 2018

LAGOS— STAKEHOLDERS, Thursday, urged the Lagos State government to beam its searchlight on the Olusosun dumpsite as a way of converting waste to wealth in the state.

They also said the recurrent fire explosion at the site was an indication of methane capable of addressing electricity challenges in the state.

Speaking during a media climate change programme organised by Climate Change Action Movement, General Manager, Triple ‘E’ Systems Association Limited, Lawrence Ibhafidon said: “When I hear people saying someone set Olusosun on fire, I usually laughed and try to educate them because many people don’t understand the physics that took place.

“One of the primary sources of methane is decay from waste. When such decay occurs, what you have is methane. For Olusosun, which has been there for several years, it means we now have build-up of gas called methane.

“In developed countries, that is what they naturally called waste to wealth. They line it in such a way that after some years they would have generated enough methane and generate electricity that can be used to illuminate and run appliances in the house.

“So, as regards recurrent fire at Olusosun dumpsite, what happened is that when you have a build up of methane, once in a while, it will definitely find its way to the surface and once it interacts with air, it instigates fire.”

Co-Founder, Climate Change Action Movement, Prosper Egeonu said: “We aim to educate communities on how to reduce causes of global warming. We intend to engage 20 council areas of Lagos State and carry out clean up exercise in these communities and educate them on how to manage waste.”

Fire regularly breaks out at the Olusosun Landfill, the biggest rubbish dump in Lagos. This often threatens the lives of scavengers and properties near the dump.

One of the causes of the regular fire at the dump is the methane gas that is generated by rotting rubbish. Any little spark or hot weather can cause fire at the dump. The Lagos State Government has often had to close the dump and warn scavengers not to go near it.

The bio-methane will also be used to generate electricity.

Dutch Government commits €120 million to back Lagos waste-to-energy project with Dutch company

The Lagos State Government has revealed a €120 million commitment from the Netherlands government to back its ongoing waste-to-energy project with the Harvest Waste Consortium, a Dutch company.

This was disclosed by Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, during a recent executive couch interview with Nairametrics, where he provided updates on various partnerships the Lagos State Government has established with foreign private sector entities in waste management.

Wahab explained that the project, aimed at converting a portion of Lagos’ waste into electricity, will be implemented at the decommissioned Epe landfill, with Harvest Waste processing 2,500 to 3,000 tons daily from the 13,000 to 14,000 tons of waste generated in Lagos.

He further noted that the company only requires an assurance of this waste supply to generate power, a feasible goal given the city’s daily waste generation figures.

“The waste-to-energy project with the Dutch company Harvest Waste is backed by the Dutch government to the tune of about €120 million, and we have designated the decommissioned Epe landfill for this purpose,” the statement read in part.

It added, “We are going to guarantee them 2,500 to 3,000 tons of waste daily from the 13,000 to 14,000 tons generated in Lagos.”

The commissioner further disclosed that Harvest Waste has completed the feasibility studies for the project and has assured the Lagos State Government of its full commitment to making the venture a success

Wahab further disclosed that the Lagos State Government is actively decommissioning several landfills to make space for new waste management projects with foreign private companies, including the Jospong Group and Closing the Loop.

The Jospong Group, an Accra-based waste-to-wealth company, is focused on processing waste collected by PSP operators into valuable products like compost fertilizers and recycled plastic bins. He mentioned that all meetings have been held, and the numbers are promising.

The equipment has been commissioned, and operations are expected to begin in six to seven months. The company has already set up an office in Alausa, Lagos, employing Nigerians to manage operations.

The commissioner also highlighted the partnership with Closing the Loop, a Dutch company, which will manage electronic waste in Lagos. Wahab revealed that Closing the Loop plans to establish a local facility to process electronic waste, reducing the need for exportation and repurposing materials within the state.

He noted that major dumpsites, such as Olusosun and Solous 1, 2, and 3, are in advanced stages of decommissioning, with new landfills being provided to support these projects.

Once these partnerships are fully operational, the government expects only 3% to 4% of the waste generated in Lagos to end up in landfills, in line with the state’s goal of turning waste into valuable resources and promoting sustainability.
