16 die in Enugu auto crash
1st May 2024
By Johnson Idowu
No fewer than 14 male and two female adults lost their lives when their vehicle crashed into a fence and caught fire along the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka road late Tuesday.
The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe disclosed this in a statement shared on the X page of the command on Wednesday.
The accident, according to Ndukwe, occurred when an 18-seater bus with a Bauchi number plate DAS 215 XA crashed into the fence of Maduka University and went up in flames.
The impact of the crash and the intensity of the fire that occurred during the accident were said to have led to the death of 16 passengers while two others were rescued alive.
Ndukwe added that further investigation revealed that the vehicle was speeding before it lost control and rammed into the fence.
The statement read, “The Enugu State Police Command wishes to inform the public that a lone fatal motor accident occurred today, April 30, 2024, around 5:20 p.m., at Ekwegbe, along Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road, claiming the lives of yet-to-be-identified 14 males and two females who burned beyond recognition.
“The accident involves an 18-seater white-coloured Toyota Hummer bus with a Bauchi State commercial registration number DAS 215 XA and the inscription “Masha Allah”, said to have been driven at high speed, lost control, and plunged into the fence of Maduka University along the road.
“A preliminary investigation reveals that the vehicle unfortunately burst into flames burning beyond recognition, the 16 deceased individuals, who were taken to the hospital and confirmed dead. However, two other passengers were rescued alive and taken to the hospital for medical attention by police officers, soldiers and public-spirited citizens, who immediately responded to the incident.”
The PPRO stated that further investigation revealed that the vehicle which was also loaded with vegetables, food items, and the luggage of the passengers, was heading towards Nsukka from the Enugu axis of the road but the point of take-off and final destination of the vehicle was yet to be ascertained.
Ndukwe, however, urged members of the public to come forward with information that can help in identifying the victims.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, in the company of officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, has visited the scene to assess the situation and described the accident and the carnage therein as sad.
The CP further called on individuals that can help in identifying the victims or with information to trace the family members of the deceased to come forward with such information or call 08098880172 or 08086671202,” the statement concluded. https://punchng.com/16-die-in-enugu-auto-crash/ |

Peter Obi tweeted: Even though the cause of the accidents is yet unknown, it must not be unconnected with the bad conditions of roads and insecurities. So what were the causes of the accidents? 19 burnt to death in Kogi auto crash – FRSC
Mr Agwu, an assistant corps marshall, added that the Toyota bus was travelling from Kano and was on its lane when the Dangote truck driver travelling from Port Harcourt wrongfully overtook a vehicle and collided head-on with the bus.
By Agency Report April 28, 2024
At least 19 persons were burnt to death in an auto crash on Okene Bypass on the Okene-Lokoja Highway in Kogi on Sunday.
Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Jonas Agwu, stated in Abuja that the crash involved a Dangote Cement truck and a Toyota Hiace bus.
He stated that it took operatives of the FRSC, battling through the accompanying inferno, three hours to rescue two surviving victims of the crash.
Mr Agwu, an assistant corps marshal, added that the Toyota bus was travelling from Kano and was on its lane when the Dangote truck driver travelling from Port Harcourt wrongfully overtook a vehicle and collided head-on with the bus.
“The impact of the collision resulted in an inferno that burnt the victims to death.
“The crash, which was caused by route violation and wrongful overtaking, involved 22 male persons.
“Unfortunately, 19 persons out of the 22 victims were killed, while one was injured.
“The two victims who got rescued by FRSC operatives survived without injuries because they complied with traffic regulations on the compulsory use of seatbelts.
“Corpses retrieved from the crash were deposited at Okene General Hospital,’’ Mr Agwu stated.
Mr Agwu assured that the driver of the Dangote truck would be prosecuted by directives earlier issued by the Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali-Biu.
Mr Ali-Biu had in the past called on the judiciary, the leadership of transport unions and other relevant stakeholders to join hands with the FRSC to restore sanity to Nigerian roads through speedy and effective prosecution.

Politics › Peter Obi Comments About Road Accidents In Kogi And Enugu by naptu2(op): 6:23pm On May 01, 2024 |
Peter Obi @PeterObi I have just confirmed two very gory road accidents in Kogi and Enugu states respectively that claimed the lives of 35 persons. The Kogi incident happened on Sunday along Okene/Lokoja bye where 19 persons were roasted alive while the other occurred along Nsukka/Enugu Road in Enugu state on Tuesday claiming the lives of sixteen persons. The Enugu State Police Command and Kogi State Federal Road Service Corps, FRSC have confirmed the two accidents.
Even though the cause of the accidents is yet unknown, it must not be unconnected with the bad conditions of roads and insecurities.
This is why I continue to shout out that our meager resources should be channeled at priority areas of fixing our internal roads to make them passable before going for super highway projects, which will take the chunk of the resources meant for these essential areas.
My heart goes to the families of the deceased and the injured as I pray to God to give them the strength to bear the huge loss. My condolences also go to the governments and the people of Kogi and Enugu states. -PO
