We Will Transform Nigeria Police Into Modern, Professional Force - President Tinubu

* Declares April 7 national police day in Nigeria

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has identified complete overhaul of institutional mentality and memory of police officers as fundamental in his administration’s ongoing bid to transform the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) into a modern, professional and accountable institution.

This, he said, explains why since coming on board last year, his administration has initiated wide-ranging reforms to revitalize the nation’s police force.

The President who spoke on Monday night during the maiden edition of the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony at Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, stressed the need to engage men and women of the force in training and capacity-building to equip them with the expertise required to carry out the arduous task of modern policing.

President @officialABAT, who was represented at the event by Vice President @KashimSM, explained why the federal government approved the first week of April as police week and the last day of the week as National Police Day.

“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, in our tradition of honouring the Police Force in the life of this great nation, we have approved the adoption of the first week of April as Police Week. Furthermore, the last day of the week, the 7th of April, is hereby declared National Police Day in Nigeria.

“Tonight, I must remind you that we don’t see you as just the shields of the nation. We don’t see you as robots. This is why we are here. We are here to humanise you,” he declared.

Delivering the President’s speech titled, “Courage Under Fire: A Bouquet for Our Police Force,” VP Shettima said at a time in Nigeria’s history when the nation’s security architecture is being stretched beyond elastic limits, the citizens have been able to endure in the face of security threats as well as attacks on their lives and livelihoods due to the commitment of the police.

“Your exemplary valour doesn’t only represent the pinnacle of patriotism that binds us but also instils confidence that brighter days lie just beyond the horizon,” President @officialABAT added.

He noted that his administration had been unequivocal about its resolve to transform the Nigeria Police Force into “a modern, professional, and accountable institution that mirrors the aspirations and values” of the nation.

The President continued: “Our idea of a modern police force goes beyond superficial changes like repainting office buildings and residences or simply procuring firearms. True reform of our security doctrine and its architecture necessitates recognising the importance of administering justice and adhering to our ethical values to foster stability and order in the nation.

“The transformation we seek must transcend mere policy and infrastructure; it requires a fundamental overhaul of our institutional mentality and memory.”

President @officialABAT listed part of the comprehensive reforms by his administration to rejuvenate the police force to include investment in training and capacity-building.

He said this will ensure that police officers are equipped with the knowledge, skills, values, and expertise required to tackle the complex challenges of modern policing, assuring that the government will upgrade equipment and technology to enhance operational effectiveness and efficiency of the force.

“This includes acquiring fit-for-purpose equipment, weapons, ammunition, and armoured carriers to provide cover and protection for officers in combat situations. These endeavours will be supported by suitable measures to enhance the status of our officers and personnel both during their service and after retirement,” he further stated.

In his goodwill message, President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for recognising the hardwork, resilience and patriotism of the officers and men of the police force.

Expressing his delight and that of the National Assembly for celebrating the well-deserved officers of the force, the Senate President said the decision to celebrate the nation's unsung heroes will pave way for a new police force in the country.

“The leadership of the police understands the role of police force in a democratic dispensation. I commend the Inspector General of Police and I commend the police officers for the work of sacrifice and for maintaining peace and order in our communities.

“As we commend the good officers, let us weed out the bad ones among the police force,” Akpabio stated, adding that to whom much is given, much is expected.

Earlier in his welcome address, IGP Egbetokun applauded President Tinubu for his support to the force, as well as his administration efforts in ensuring the nation's security forces are up to thier game.

To the recipients of the awards and commendations, the IGP assured them that their "dedication, courage and selflessness are truly inspiring," adding that their contributions to the force will be remembered for many years to come.

On his part, Chairman of the Police Service Commission and former IGP, Mr Solomon Arase, advocated improved welfare package for men and women of the Nigeria Police Force, noting that emhanced wellbeing of the personnel would improve their overall performance in securing lives and property.

He commended the @officialABAT administration for the support so far given to the police force, even as he pledged the cooperation of the Police Service Commission for the transformation of the force.

Those who also delivered goodwill messages were Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf; Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam; Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; and former IGP, Chief Sunday Ehindero.

Other dignitaries present at the event include Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau; Minister of State, Police Affairs, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Abdulhamid Madori, and Chairman, House Committee on Police Affairs, Hon. Makki Yalleman.

Others are Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja; former IGP, Chief Mike Okiro; former IGP, Baba Usman Alkali, and the Emir of Kano, HRH Alhaji Ado Bayero, among others.

Someone that doesn't know that the USSR didn't need to break any embargo because they could simply veto it.

CuntPeddler:
Your own statements sound funnier.... That Reagan and Gorbarachev had several meetings never meant they were friends. They were trying to prevent a doomsday warfare. Are u even aware that the USSR was sanctioned for supplying Iraq weapons? In fact it was that same sanction that bled and broke the USSR. And that’s the same thing the west are attempting to do now by placing various sanctions on Russia. I think I have to leave you right here. You’re entitled to your own opinion

I move
Hahahahahahaha

It was sanction on the Soviet Union for breaking sanctions on Iraq that bled and broke it.

🤣🤣🤣

You get the award for being the greatest comedian on Nairaland.

It wasn't Reagan's Star Wars programme, it wasn't the problems of collectivisation that led to the fall of the Soviet Union, it was sanction for breaking embargo on Iraq.

I am done with you.

Thank you for entertaining me.

CuntPeddler:
Oga no need for the long epistle you wrote here. I watched the gulf war too. Russia was in a Cold War and a bitter arms race with the US and a proxy was was a way they could flex their muscles. So there was no way they could supply moribund weapons to Iraq when they were in such an arms race with the US. It’s common sense

The fact they approached to assist Saddam is enough evidence to show u they wanted to to try out their latest weapons.
I very much doubt that you watched the Cold War, otherwise you would have known that Glosnost and Perestroika were in full force by 1989 and that there was no arms race between the Soviet Union and the United States after that.

Furthermore, you would have known that there was a UN arms embargo on Iraq from August 1990 and that the Soviet Union did not supply any arms to Iraq after that.

Are you even aware of the meetings between Ronnie and Gorby??

I wish you knew how funny your statements are.

So u want to tell me Gobarachev worked against the USSR even when the arms race and Cold War between the US and Soviet Union was still hot? Or Gobarachev practically produced the moribund weapons they supplied Saddam? Wow! Nairalanders sef

Whatever makes you happy! I move
Let me educate you.

Saddam did not run to Gorby. The Soviet Union had given old Scud missiles to Arab countries in the 1960s when America supported the Israelis and the Soviet Union supported the Arabs.

Irq had old Scud B missiles which were made in the 1960s. I watched the Iran-Iraq War, Iraq was already firing scud missiles at Iran way back in the 1980s. The Iranians had to get their own scuds from the Libyans.

The Iraqis modified Scud B missiles and that's what they fired at Israel in 1991. That's why the UD deployed Patriot Missile batteries to Israel.

Now go and find out how many variants of scud missiles the Soviets developed after the old Scud B from the 1960s.

I wish nairaland had a voice note I would have really educated you today. During the gulf war, the same Saddam you talk about ran to Dmitri Gobarachev when the mighty USSR was still in existence and yet the US defeated him in the deserts of Kuwait. You’re the one who’s a kid here because u know nothing about Russia and the West. You grew up reading the stupid comments of some people just as u have here.
Saddam ran to Gorby when Gorby and Ronnie were best friends! Hahahahahahaha

He's basically saying that they prevented Iranian missiles and drones from landing on Israel, but Russian missiles and drones are landing on Ukraine.

Volodymyr Zelensky @ZelenskyyUa

The entire world witnessed allied action in the skies above Israel and neighboring countries. It demonstrated how truly effective unity in defending against terror can be when it is based on sufficient political will.

Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Jordan acted together and with maximum efficiency.

Together, they prevented terror from prevailing. And they are working together, and in coordination with others, to prevent further escalation.

Israel is not a NATO member, so no action, such as triggering Article 5, was required. And no one was dragged into the war. They simply contributed to the protection of human life.

"Shaheds" in the skies above Ukraine sound identical to those over the Middle East. The impact of ballistic missiles, if they are not intercepted, is the same everywhere.

European skies could have received the same level of protection long ago if Ukraine had received similar full support from its partners in intercepting drones and missiles. Terror must be defeated completely and everywhere, not more in some places and less in others.

I thank everyone in the world, every leader and state, who truly assists us with air defense and missiles necessary to protect our skies, as well as training our pilots on F-16s. All of this already works and will continue to work to save lives.

However, we can now see how unity can work truly a hundred percent, and how almost a hundred percent of “Shaheds” and missiles can be intercepted. We will discuss it with our partners.
