Austin Orette, Delta South Senatorial Aspirant resigns from NDC


A prominent Nigerian-American medicine physician, Dr. Austin Orette, has officially resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

“I hereby tender my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) with immediate effect.”

Orette in a resignation letter dated May 28, 2026 said his decision followed careful reflection on his political future.

“The decision has become necessary due to personal reasons, failure of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) to conduct credible primaries and a deep reflection on my political journey and future direction.”

The letter routed through the secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) expressed gratitude to the leadership of NDC for the opportunity and support he enjoyed during his time in the party.

“I sincerely appreciate the opportunity given to me by the party to serve as an aspirant for the Delta South Senatorial District. I am grateful for the support, encouragement and relationships built during my time in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). I wish the NDC and all its leaders, members and supporters success in their endeavours for a greater Nigeria.”

Recall, Orette in May, 2026 vowed to expose the wrong doing of NDC national leadership in court.

NDC Dropped My Name After I Won Primary Because I'm Muslim, Nasarawa Reps Aspirant Alleges

A House of Representatives aspirant of the New Democratic Congress (NDC) in Nasarawa State, Zahradeen Ahmad Zangina, has accused the party leadership of removing his name from the list of candidates after he emerged victorious in the party's primary election, alleging he was sidelined because of his religion.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Zangina alleged that he won the NDC primary election for the Keffi/Karu/Kokona Federal Constituency but was later informed that his name had been removed from the party’s list of candidates in what he described as an act of religious discrimination.

He called on the leadership of the party, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organisations, religious leaders and the international community to intervene, insisting that the alleged action undermines internal democracy and violates the constitutional rights of Nigerian citizens.

“I wish to bring to the attention of Nigerians, members of the New Democratic Congress (NDC), civil society organizations, the media, and the international community what I consider a grave injustice and an alleged act of religious discrimination against my candidacy in the Keffi/Karu/Kokona Federal Constituency of Nasarawa State,” the statement read.

According to Zangina, he was initially notified by the Nasarawa State Chairman of the NDC, Dogo Shama, that he had emerged as the winner of the party’s primary election for the House of Representatives seat.

However, he said he was later shocked to discover that his name had allegedly been removed from the final list of candidates.

“Following the conduct of our party’s primary election, I was officially informed by the Chairman of the NDC in Nasarawa State, Dogo Shama, that I had emerged as the winner of the primary election for the House of Representatives ticket in my constituency,” he said.

“However, a few days later, I was shocked to learn that my name had allegedly been removed from the list of candidates.”

Zangina alleged that the North Central Vice Chairman of the party, Barnabas Ijisi Dankunama, informed him that the party leadership did not want a Muslim candidate representing the constituency because it intended to field only Christian candidates for House of Representatives positions in Nasarawa State.

“According to my account, the decision was communicated to me by the North Central Vice Chairman of the party, Barnabas Ijisi Dankunama. I further allege that during our discussions, he indicated that the party leadership did not want a Muslim candidate for the constituency because it intended to field only Christian candidates for House of Representatives seats in Nasarawa State,” the statement added.

The aspirant rejected what he described as religious discrimination, arguing that Nigeria’s Constitution guarantees equal rights and opportunities for all citizens irrespective of religion or ethnicity.

“I strongly reject any form of discrimination based on religion. Nigeria is a democratic nation whose Constitution guarantees equal rights and opportunities for every citizen regardless of religion, ethnicity, or background. Political parties should promote fairness, inclusion, and equal participation rather than religious exclusion,” he said.

Zangina further claimed that he possesses a video recording of one of his discussions with Dankunama, conducted in Hausa, which he believes supports his allegations.

“During my conversations with Mr. Barnabas Ijisi Dankunama, I was informed that my name would be removed despite my victory in the primary election. I have a video recording of one of our discussions, conducted in Hausa, which I believe supports my account of these events,” he stated.

According to him, he subsequently sought intervention from the National Chairman of the NDC, Cleopas Moses, who allegedly told him he could not reverse the decision and advised him to discuss the matter with the party leader.

He also said he met with the party leader, Saraki Dickson, who, after listening to his complaint, advised him to seek legal redress.

Zangina added that he later approached the party’s vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to explain the situation and seek intervention, but said the matter remains unresolved.

He warned that allowing the alleged action to stand would erode confidence in the country’s electoral process.

“I believe that if these actions are allowed to stand, they will undermine internal democracy and public confidence in the electoral process. Every aspirant deserves to be judged on merit and the outcome of a transparent primary election, not on religious identity,” he said.

The aspirant called on the NDC leadership to review the matter and restore what he described as the mandate freely given to him during the primary election.

“I therefore call on the leadership of the New Democratic Congress to immediately review this matter and ensure that justice is done. I also appeal to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organizations, religious leaders, and all Nigerians who believe in justice and equal opportunity to closely monitor this issue and encourage a fair resolution,” he added.

He also claimed to be in possession of what he described as the authentic list of candidates from the party’s primary election, which allegedly contained his name before what he termed a subsequent manipulation.

Osun Account Freezing: EFCC Hasn’t Acted Illegally – Falana

Femi Falani, a senior lawyer, also warned against suggesting that anti-corruption agencies should suspend investigations because elections are approaching.


Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, has defended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), saying the anti-graft agency acted within its legal powers by freezing the Osun State Government’s account.

Falana, who appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, said the commission did not act unlawfully, stressing that the President himself acknowledged the legality of the EFCC’s action while expressing concerns only about its timing.

“As far as the law is concerned, the EFCC has not acted illegally. As a matter of fact, that came out in the statement of the President, that whereas, ‘I’m not questioning your mandate and the exercise of your powers; however, I’m embarrassed,'” Falana said.

According to him, the EFCC is empowered by law to freeze the accounts of the Federal Government, state governments or local governments where necessary, provided it approaches the court “in not more than 72 hours”.

“Under the law, the EFCC has the power to freeze the account of the Federal Government or of any state or local government in Nigeria and, in not more than 72 hours, has to go to court,” he added.

The senior lawyer also warned against suggesting that anti-corruption agencies should suspend investigations because elections are approaching.

“We must be very careful that we don’t give the dangerous impression that when elections are 10, 20 or 30 days away, the anti-graft agency must turn the other eye. If funds are being moved to the tune of billions of naira, it cannot ignore such transactions simply because elections are coming,” he said.

On President Bola Tinubu’s intervention, Falana said the issue of timing could have been handled administratively through the Attorney-General of the Federation.

“The embarrassment alluded to by the President would have been handled by the Attorney-General of the Federation. The President would have advised the Attorney-General, ‘I am disturbed by the development in Osun State; please take over the case,” the SAN suggested.

The controversy began on Wednesday when Governor Ademola Adeleke accused the EFCC of freezing one of the state’s accounts and described the action as politically motivated, coming days before the Osun governorship election.

The EFCC, however, said it froze the account after detecting suspicious movement of public funds into several corporate entities, insisting it acted in line with its statutory duty to protect public resources.

On Thursday, President Tinubu directed the commission to immediately approach the court to vacate the freezing order, saying although the EFCC acted within its mandate, the timing of the action was “inauspicious” and could create the impression of federal interference in the forthcoming governorship election.

Governor Adeleke has since filed a ₦2 billion suit against the EFCC.

In line with the directive of Mr. Governor @jidesanwoolu to rid the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway of all forms of infractions, environmental pollution, illegal motor parks, roadside trading, and market displays on highway setbacks and pedestrian walkways, enforcement operations uncovered a disturbing act of vandalism beneath the newly constructed bridge linking Festac Town to Alakija.

Investigations revealed that suspected hoodlums had deliberately vandalised critical structural components of the bridge by removing iron rods, steel reinforcements, cables, and other supporting materials essential to the integrity of the infrastructure. This criminal act poses a serious threat to public safety and undermines the government’s investment in critical infrastructure.

Following this discovery, a joint midnight enforcement operation involving officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force was conducted at the location. The operation led to the arrest of 27 suspected hoodlums, who will be prosecuted in accordance with the extant laws of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Government remains committed to protecting public infrastructure and will continue to take decisive action against individuals or groups engaged in acts of vandalism, environmental infractions, and other criminal activities that threaten the safety and wellbeing of residents.
