Christianity EtcArchbishop Of Lagos' Lenten Talk For Sunday, March 1st, 2026 by naptu2(op): 11:08am On Mar 01

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOdhXRU78Tg?feature=shared

Today, the 1st of March 2026, is second Sunday of Lent.

The theme for our reflection is from Eden's fall to Tabor's hope.

One of the greatest philosophers and theologians in the church's history, one whose thoughts have influenced Christian thoughts, St. Thomas Aquinas, described all of his
writings and all the insights he had had as straw. He had had a profound mystical experience while celebrating mass after which he stopped writing altogether because of the grandeur of the glory of the Lord that surpassed all that he ever wrote.

What did he see that made his illustrious work look insignificant that made his writing looked like chaff, that made him see worthlessness in material things? It was the same thing that the disciples saw on Mount Tabor that made Peter exclaim, "It is good for us to be here." They saw a glimpse of the grandeur and the glory of God.

The passage of the gospel that we read today, Matthew 17:1-9, we see the call by Jesus for Peter, James, and John to go with him to the top of Mount Tabor in order to witness His glory as God.

Obviously, the climb up that mountain was not easy. But in loving obedience, they responded to the call and they did not regret it.

As we also fast, pray, and do charity on our way to Easter, today's readings encourage us that even though it may not be easy and it may take self-discipline to follow the Lenten observances, a glimpse of the glory of the Lord awaits us as we bask in the joy and grace that Easter pulls out for us.

The transfiguration is a sign of the future glory that awaits those that follow Christ. It is a sign that at the end of all our pain and suffering, there is glad rejoicing. It is an encouragement for us to keep going forward. It is encouraging us to bear adversity with fortitude, to respond to God's call to righteousness, to follow Jesus and listen to his commands.

The whole of our life in this world is a journey towards heaven. It's a journey which is sometimes harsh and difficult because we have to struggle with the enemies both within and outside of ourselves. We have to swim against the current of the times and the flow of the waters of the world.

Quite a number of us suffer from fidelity to God, to the teachings of the Church, and the values of the Church as we make choices driven by faith not popular or acceptable to the world around us. The story of the transfiguration is God's way of strengthening us with the hope of heaven.

Our life in heaven will definitely be free from fears, worries, troubles, or shame. and we will be truly able to understand and repeat what Peter said after he had seen the glory of the
Lord. It is good for us to be here.

As we contemplate the apostles glimpse of glory, we should have the courage to continue to follow Jesus and listen to him. Today also, the experience of the apostles stand not only to encourage those who have responded to God's call, but also to those who are yet to respond.

For those who are yet to respond, what exactly is keeping you from doing so? Could it be any of the many worldly pleasures that are difficult to live off? Some material good or fear of the demands of following Jesus? Know that all these things lost meaning to the Apostles on the Mount Tabor so that they wanted to build tents and remain there.

Abraham heard God's call at 75 and he left father and family. God is calling you at this present age and time to leave undue comfort zone, sin, worldly attachments, fears and worries because the eyes of God are on those who fear him.

If like Abraham, we leave our comfort zone, if like Peter, James, and John, we allow Christ to lead us to the high mountain, we can be rest assured that we will be
embracing the covenant of God's blessings which he has prepared for those who do his will.

The call and the invitation are still open, and God eagerly awaits our response.

For those who have responded and maybe are in doubt or clouds of fear looms around, this is an encouragement. Maybe you are waiting to have that personal glimpse of the glory like the apostles had. But then every day at Mass, God reveals his glory. In the sacraments, at the confessional, God
reveals his glory. Try to remove irreverence and see God's glory in the Eucharist. We must not forget that the Jesus whom Peter, James, and John were with on Mount Tabor is the same Jesus they were with every day of their lives and he is the same Jesus that is daily on our sides.

He may not show himself to us in any special manifestation, but we must learn to find him in our everyday life.

And may God Almighty bless you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Most Reverend Doctor Alfred Adewale Martins, Catholic Archbishop of Lagos.

CP LAGOS LEADS POLICE PERSONNEL TO RESTORE NORMALCY AT OTO-IJANIKIN

…..Seven Suspects Arrested, One Locally Made Pistol With Two Live Cartridges Recovered From Them, Orders Massive Manhunt For Other Fleeing Suspects.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, personally led a joint team of Police operatives and Tactical Squads from the Command to clear the blockage and reopen the Lagos-Badagry Expressway at the Otto-Ijanikin axis to traffic and other road users. The expressway, which was blocked following a communal clash between the youths of Ijanikin and Otto, has since been reopened at about 09:00 am.

The expressway, which was blocked for some hours today following a communal clash between youths of Ijanikin and Otto, has now been reopened to traffic, and normalcy has been fully restored in the affected communities with members of the public going about their lawful businesses and activities peacefully.

During the clash between the two youth groups, one Akinyemi Omo Akin, was suspected to have been shot and died in the hospital. The Commissioner of Police has directed a full-scale investigation of the incident, to be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti. Massive deployment of Police personnel is on the ground to sustain the peace and forestall any further breakdown of law and order.

From preliminary investigation, it is incorrect and untrue that the deceased died from a stray bullet from the Police. Before Police intervention and arrival at the scene, there were calls and information to the Police from members of the public that the two sides brought in cultists that were shooting and engaging themselves in a gun duel. The victim must have been shot during the shootout.

Meanwhile, seven (7) suspects from both sides have been arrested and are in Police custody in connection with the clash, and they have made voluntary statements indicating the various criminal roles they played in the clash.

One locally made pistol and two (2) live cartridges were recovered from one of the suspects. Furthermore, detachments of Police Tactical Squads and Anti-Riot Policemen are currently combing the affected communities and surrounding bushes to apprehend the other fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.

The Lagos State Police Command hereby warns all troublemakers and their sponsors that the Command will not tolerate any act that can lead to the breach of the existing peace anywhere in the State. The full weight of the law will be applied to those arrested. Parents and guardians are hereby enjoined to prevail on their children and wards to desist forthwith from any act that threatens the safety of lives and property in the State.

CP Olohundare Jimoh encourages all the people of the State to go about their lawful businesses and other engagements without fear or apprehension. He urges members of the public to promptly report any suspicious persons or activities capable of threatening public peace and security through the Command’s emergency lines: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, 08039344870, and 09168630929.

I created this post on April 21st, 2020.

I usually begin by telling the story, but I'm going to do it differently this time because I've seen some very funny posts.

Let's deal with some of the ignorance here. Some people are saying that the A29 Super Tucano is not used for warfare or that it's just a reconnaissance plane, while some very funny people are saying that we should buy F14, F15 or F16 planes (to fight against Boko Haram? grin), So let's answer the question, what is the Super Tucano used for.

The Super Tucano has the prefix A. What are A planes used for? Some people want us to buy F planes. What are F planes used for?

These are the meanings of the prefixes on US military planes.

A: Attack
C: Cargo (i.e., transport)
D: Drone (i.e., drone control)
E: Electronic warfare
F: Fighter
H: Help aircraft (i.e., search and rescue)
K: Kerosene Carrier (i.e., tanker)
L: Equipped for cold weather operations
M: Multi-mission (i.e., Special Operations)
O: Observation
P: Maritime patrol
Q: Unmanned aerial vehicle
R: Reconnaissance
S: Surface warfare
T: Trainer
U: Utility
V: VIP transport
W: Weather reconnaissance
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1962_United_States_Tri-Service_aircraft_designation_system

The A simply means (Ground) Attack aircraft. They are used to provide close air support to soldiers on the ground and to attack enemy soldiers on the ground. These planes are particularly useful in guerrilla warfare and counter-insurgency operations, like the kind of warfare that the Nigerian military is fighting in the North-East.

The F planes are fighters and interceptors. They are primarily used to fight against other military aircraft. Pray tell, what war planes do Boko Haram have that you want to buy F planes to fight against Boko Haram?

The Nigerian Army has often complained that they need close air support and that it often takes the Nigerian Air Force too long to respond with close air support when they require it. The A29 Super Tucano is meant to solve this problem.

Furthermore, the Nigerian Air Force has complained that the Chengdu F7 (an F plane) is too fast and that it's not good for counter-insurgency operations, yet you want to buy another F plane to fight Boko Haram?

UzorIyke:
You're correct but he's also correct that Iran is sponsoring about 90% world terrorism, almost all gets link to Iran, even in Nigeria all these terrorists organisations one or two must be sponsoring by them, we have Lukarawa, Iswap, ISIS, Boko haram, and many others, Iranian hands must be in one or two especially this ISIS.
Research the difference between Shia and Sunni Islam.
