2027: I remain NDC Lagos Guber candidate — Balogun

LAGOS — Governorship aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Lagos State, Naheem Balogun, has assured supporters that he remains confident of securing the party’s ticket for the 2027 governorship election, while urging calm over reports of internal disputes within the party.

Balogun gave the assurance on Tuesday while receiving party members and supporters shortly after returning from a brief trip to the United States.

He expressed appreciation for the turnout of supporters, describing their presence as a strong source of motivation.

The aspirant dismissed rumours suggesting that another candidate had emerged as the party’s flag bearer, insisting that he remains the recognised candidate of the party.

“I urge all our supporters not to be distracted by rumours and misinformation. You should remain calm, focused and steadfast. The mandate given to us by party members cannot be taken away through speculation and propaganda,” he said.

Balogun added that he would continue to engage stakeholders across Lagos State and ensure that key decisions are taken through consultation.

“I will continue to protect the interests of our supporters and the NDC faithful. I will not take any decision affecting our collective future without consulting stakeholders across Lagos State. This project belongs to the people, and together we will determine its direction,” he said.

He thanked party members across the state’s local government areas for their continued support, describing their commitment as the foundation of his political movement.

Balogun also reaffirmed his commitment to following due party processes in resolving any disputes arising from the governorship primary election.

In recent weeks, the NDC has experienced internal tensions over the outcome of its governorship primary, with competing claims and allegations causing divisions within the party.

The aspirant, however, urged members to remain united and avoid actions that could weaken the party ahead of future elections.

Lagos guber: NDC leaders reject move to overturn Balogun’s primary victory

Leaders of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Lagos State have rejected what they described as attempts to overturn the governorship primary victory of Naheem Balogun.

They insisted that the outcome of the party’s direct primary election remains valid and must be respected.

The party leaders also dismissed reports that the NDC had submitted name of another person as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election, describing such claims as false, misleading and capable of deepening divisions within the party.

Speaking through the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos for Naheem Movement, Sunday Efe Forgive, after a strategic meeting in Lagos, the leaders vowed to resist any move aimed at altering the result of the primary election that produced Balogun as the party’s flag bearer.

According to them, available evidence shows that Balogun’s name has already been uploaded to the portal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State.

The leaders argued that any attempt to replace a candidate produced through a direct primary process would amount to a disregard for the wishes of party members and could undermine the credibility of the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

They further warned that unless issues arising from the primary election are resolved through transparent engagement and strict adherence to the party’s constitutional provisions, the lingering controversy could weaken the NDC’s electoral prospects in Lagos State.

“The integrity of the NDC is at stake, and all stakeholders must act in a manner that preserves internal democracy and party unity,” the leaders added.

Meanwhile, some stakeholders within the party have raised concerns over the role allegedly played by a chieftain of the party in the preparation and submission of the Electoral Committee’s report.

They claimed that his involvement might have contributed to the controversy surrounding the nomination process.

Apparently, Dr. Naheem Balogun had submitted a formal complaint directly accusing John Ughulu, the National Director General of the OK Movement, of extortion.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the Lagos State gubernatorial candidate alleged that Mr. Ughulu demanded the sum of ₦10,000,000 from him.
